17. Performing post-Britishness : a quest for independence in the contemporary literature of England

Abstract

Since the eighteenth century, the distinctness of the nations of the UK has largely been overshadowed by top-down gestures aiming to unify British identity in everyday-life discourse. Due to the impact of devolution, the debates surrounding the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, and the 2016 EU referendum, the political conflicts between state and nation have been further exposed. Compared with the other three nations, England, in the eyes of many commentators, should be the last to whine about invisibility within an Anglo-British framework. But the fact that an over-stretched England has also led to the absence of the nation can no longer be ignored. An increasing interest in the discovery of England since the 1990s suggests a political and cultural need for renegotiating the boundary between Englishness and Britishness. Nevertheless, many attempts to pinpoint an English identity in the contemporary literature have relapsed into a reconstruction of British conceptions of the nation. In response to the (re-)canonisation of British imaginations, this thesis aims to show that a turn to 'post-Britishness' as a reading method suggests not only a desire for the return of England in a range of literature, but also a warning of the risk of expanding the ideas of England into some renewed British ideals. Reading novels by authors including Ian McEwan, Graham Swift, Gillian Slovo, Alecky Blythe, J.G. Ballard, and Tom McCarthy, this research analyses methods pointing towards breaks from idealised imaginations of England. Contextualised in a literary space that canonises a return to imaginary past, post-British critique of this kind can reveal absurdities of using British narratives to conceptualise an English community. By studying the biopoliticalness of British ideals, this thesis argues that a moment of Englishness starting from locating an independent England unavoidably sparks a reconsideration of the organicist strategies of Britishness, and their registration in contemporary literatures. A post-British reading of these literary texts shows that the continuity of an originary (narrative) structure is the major source of the political violence of Britishness. Instead of optimistically assuming a messianic, once-for-all break from such a structure, this thesis argues that awareness of its organicist logic is crucial for understanding the systematic absorption and disciplining of English characters inside British narrative.

32. Enhancing the Permselectivity of Thin-Film Composite Membranes Interlayered with MoS2 Nanosheets via Precise Thickness Control

Abstract

The demand for highly permeable and selective thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes, which are essential for seawater and brackish water softening and resource recovery, is growing rapidly. However, improving and tuning membrane permeability and selectivity simultaneously remains highly challenging owing to the lack of thickness control in polyamide films. In this study, we fabricated high-performance interlayered TFC membrane through classical interfacial polymerization on a MoS2-coated polyethersulfone substrate. Due to the enhanced confinement effect on the interface degassing and the improved adsorption of the amine monomer by the MoS2 interlayer, the MoS2-interlayered TFC membrane exhibited enhanced roughness and crosslinking. Compared to the control TFC membrane, MoS2-interlayered TFC membranes have a thinner polyamide layer, with thickness ranging from to 85 nm, that can be tuned by altering the MoS2 interlayer thickness. A multilayer permeation model was developed to delineate and analyze the transport resistance and permeability of the MoS2-interlayer and polyamide film through the regression of experimental data. The optimized MoS2-interlayered TFC membrane (0.3-inter) had a 96.8% Na2SO4 rejection combined with an excellent permeability of 15.9 L m-2 38 h-1 bar-1 39 (LMH/bar), approximately 2.4 times that of the control membrane (6.6 LMH/bar). Abstract

Accurate and efficient molecular recognition plays a crucial role in the fields of molecular detection and diagnostics. Conventional trial‐and‐error‐based molecular recognition approaches have always been challenged in distinguishing minimal differences between targets and non‐targets, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of oligonucleotides. To address these challenges, here, a novel concept of dynamic addressing analysis is proposed. In this concept, by dissecting the regions of the target and creating a corresponding recognizer, it is possible to eliminate the inaccuracy and inefficiency of recognition. To achieve this concept, a Dynamic Addressing Molecular Robot (DAMR), a DNA‐based dynamic addressing device is developed which is capable of dynamically locating targets. DAMR is designed to first bind to the conserved region of the target while addressing the specific region dynamically until accurate recognition is achieved. DAMR has provided an approach for analyzing low‐resolution targets and has been used for analyzing SNP of miR‐196a2 in both cell and serum samples, which has opened new avenues for effective and efficient molecular recognition. Abstract

Intraperitoneal dissemination is the main method of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) metastasis, which is related to poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a novel class of endogenous RNAs with covalently closed loop structures that are implicated in the regulation of tumor development. In this study, hsa_circ_0001546 is downregulated in EOC primary and metastatic tissues vs. control tissues and this phenotype has a favorable effect on EOC OS and DFS. hsa_circ_0001546 can directly bind with 14‐3‐3 proteins to act as a chaperone molecule and has a limited positive effect on 14‐3‐3 protein stability. This complex recruits CAMK2D to induce the Ser324 phosphorylation of Tau proteins, changing the phosphorylation status of Tau bound to 14‐3‐3 and ultimately forming the hsa_circ_0001546/14‐3‐3/CAMK2D/Tau complex. The existence of this complex stimulates the production of Tau aggregation, which then induces the accumulation of lipid peroxides (LPOs) and causes LPO‐dependent ferroptosis. In vivo, treatment with ferrostatin‐1 and TRx0237 rescued the inhibitory effect of hsa_circ_0001546 on EOC cell spreading. Therefore, based on this results, ferroptosis caused by Tau aggregation occurs in EOC cells, which is not only in Alzheimer's disease‐ or Parkinson's disease‐related cells and this kind of ferroptosis driven by the hsa_circ_0001546/14‐3‐3/CAMK2D/Tau complex is LPO‐dependent rather than GPX4‐dependent is hypothesized.
