The chemical industry plays a crucial role in strengthening the manufacturing sector of China, and chemical industrial parks are key platforms for new industrialization. Chemical industrial parks encounter numerous challenges in mitigating pollution and carbon emissions, encompassing issues such as a low resource-utilization rate, deficient recycling practices, substantial costs associated with end-of-pipe pollution control, and escalated safety and environmental risks. This study investigates collaborative pathways for pollution reduction and carbon mitigation within chemical industrial parks. According to the characteristics and research progress of carbon emissions and pollution generation, the implications of carbon reduction synergies are analyzed. A comprehensive analytical framework is established for general industrial processes, covering material metabolic processes in enterprise production, symbiotic metabolism in industrial parks, and material metabolism in park infrastructure. Moreover, specific technical pathways for pollution reduction and carbon mitigation are proposed: (1) establishing a comprehensive inventory of carbon and pollutant emissions; (2) integrating and optimizing the technological and industrial structures of chemical industrial parks through the development of green production technologies, symbiotic upgrades in infrastructure, enhanced inter-enterprise cooperation, coordinated efforts in pollution reduction,carbon mitigation, and safety production, and optimization of product-industry-space structures; and (3) conducting a cost-benefit analysis of pollution reduction and carbon mitigation technology pathways through a life cycle assessment. Employing the Hangzhou Bay Shangyu Economic and Technological Development Zone as a case study, an empirical analysis of pollution reduction and carbon mitigation technology pathways is undertaken. Furthermore, recommendations are made from three perspectives: improving precision measurement systems to strengthen material flow management in chemical industrial parks, reinforcing symbiotic links through systems engineering to empower pollution reduction and carbon mitigation, and stimulating systemic efficiency reforms for the green and high-quality development of chemical industrial parks.

The provisions of industrial water pollution prevention and control have been well implemented since the newly revised Law of the People’s Republic of China on Prevention and Control of Water Pollution was issued on January 1, 2018. The national policies and facility construction related to industrial water pollution prevention and control have achieved significant progress. National departments and provinces have issued over 60 related policies and regulations. Outdated production facilities were eliminated to actively promote cleaner production, and over 1400 centralized sewage treatment facilities were constructed in industrial agglomeration areas. However, investigation and evaluation indicate that the progress in the implementation of some legal provisions and the control of industrial water pollution is slow. Moreover, the implementation of provisions between regions and industries is imbalanced, excessive discharge of pollution occurs, and the regulatory capacity to support new national/local emission standards is insufficient. We suggest that entire-process control should be conducted over industrial water pollution while focusing on cleaner production, and drainage indicators should be optimized to further promote environmental information disclosure.

As a national key protection and restoration project, ecological restoration of Baiyangdian Wetland has an important significance for environmental management. As the research area in Zaozhadian wetland, the purification effect of warm season and cold season aquatic plants was studied under different overflying water qualities. It provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the ecological environment restoration and management of wetlands. The results showed that the warm season and cold season aquatic plants all played important roles on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal and maintained the stable water environmental from the nutrient release from soil. The warm season plant-mixed Myriophyllum spicatum and Ceratophyllum demersum and the cold season plant-Potamogeton crispus L. can be reasonably configurated for the wetland restoration.

Adult salivary stem/progenitor cells (SSPC) have an intrinsic property to self-renew in order to maintain tissue architecture and homeostasis. Adult salivary glands have been documented to harbor SSPC, which have been shown to play a vital role in the regeneration of the glandular structures postradiation damage. We have previously demonstrated that activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase 3A1 (ALDH3A1) after radiation reduced aldehyde accumulation in SSPC, leading to less apoptosis and improved salivary function. We subsequently found that sustained pharmacological ALDH3A1 activation is critical to enhance regeneration of murine submandibular gland after radiation damage. Further investigation shows that ALDH3A1 function is crucial for SSPC self-renewal and survival even in the absence of radiation stress. Salivary glands from Aldh3a1 -/- mice have fewer acinar structures than wildtype mice. ALDH3A1 deletion or pharmacological inhibition in SSPC leads to a decrease in mitochondrial DNA copy number, lower expression of mitochondrial specific genes and proteins, structural abnormalities, lower membrane potential, and reduced cellular respiration. Loss or inhibition of ALDH3A1 also elevates ROS levels, depletes glutathione pool, and accumulates ALDH3A1 substrate 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE, a lipid peroxidation product), leading to decreased survival of murine SSPC that can be rescued by treatment with 4-HNE specific carbonyl scavengers. Our data indicate that ALDH3A1 activity protects mitochondrial function and is important for the regeneration activity of SSPC. This knowledge will help to guide our translational strategy of applying ALDH3A1 activators in the clinic to prevent radiation-related hyposalivation in head and neck cancer patients.
