3. Psychosocial and Educational Vulnerability of Overweight Children from Urban Schools.

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a pervasive health issue, with multifaceted implications for developmental trajectory. Participants included 5,573 K-5 students enrolled in a high-poverty urban public-school setting. Through an informal yet holistic assessment process, students identified as exhibiting overweight issues were compared to peers not designated as overweight across several relevant categories. Overweight students were more likely to be from lower socioeconomic backgrounds; have a high association with special education service needs; represent a more intensive overall risk level as perceived by student support staff; and mostly exhibit decreased performance in report card grades, standardized test scores, and academic engagement. Results confirm previously documented disparities in school functioning and consideration for at-risk status; this is especially relevant in an underserved context, in which regular access to services may be limited. Therefore, reliance on initial screening measures becomes necessary as a preventative mechanism to better assist children in need and to facilitate intervention planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a prevalent health condition, the effects of which extend to mental health, social relationships, educational performance, and long-term physical health conditions. The present study focused on an optimized student support intervention that functions in predominantly high-poverty urban locations, which recognizes students as possessing unique constellations of protective and risk factors. Participants included 5,573 K-5 students that support staff identified as being overweight through a holistic, collaborative assessment process, and evaluated how these students differed from peers not perceived as overweight. Findings indicated statistically significant differences across the groups, in terms of demographic characteristics, strengths and risks recognized (in academic, social-emotional/behavioral, family, and health/medical domains), school-related academic and thriving performance scores, and the moderating effects of specific psychosocial and familial strengths and risks on those educational areas. This study underscores the importance of considering both strengths- and risks-based assessment and intervention approaches – as well as the utility of initial identification of students – particularly in low-income, underserved environments. Abstract

Objective: We leveraged common genetic variation underlying ADHD, educational attainment (EA) and cognition (COG) to understand the nature of the Behavior Rating Inventory for Executive Functions (BRIEF) and its relationship to academic functioning. Method: Participants were 991 youth, ages 7 to 17, consecutively referred for neuropsychiatric evaluation. Polygenic scores (PGS) for ADHD, EA, and COG were related to the BRIEF using regression analyses. Structural equation models were used to examine the associations between the PGS, BRIEF and academic outcomes (math, reading, and special education services [EDPLAN]). Results: After modeling the PGS together, only the EA and ADHD PGS significantly associated with the BRIEF. The BRIEF partially mediated the relationships between EA PGS with math and EDPLAN and fully mediated the relationship between ADHD PGS and EDPLAN. Conclusion: Genetic data extend evidence that the BRIEF measures a construct relevant to educational success that differs from what is indexed by cognitive testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a pervasive health issue in the United States. Research has demonstrated that various correlates are associated with the onset and maintenance of overweight status, including physical health conditions, psychological well-being, interpersonal relationships, family functioning, and educational attainment. Policymakers and educators have agreed that elementary and secondary schools are crucial settings for the promotion of healthy development and ameliorating obesity. Therefore, comprehensive school-based interventions that collaborate with community agencies are being implemented to improve the achievement and well-being of at-risk students. The present study focused on City Connects, an optimized student support intervention grounded in relational developmental systems theory that functions in predominantly high-poverty urban locations. City Connects recognizes students as possessing unique constellations of protective and risk factors (i.e., strengths and needs), and an integral aspect of the intervention is that it connects students to tailored services to enhance strengths and address needs. The endeavor of the present study was to examine K-5 students that City Connects identified as manifesting with overweight issues via a holistic, collaborative assessment process, and how these students differed from peers not designated as overweight. Findings indicated statistically significant differences across the groups, in terms of demographic characteristics, overall level of perceived risk, strengths and needs recognized, school-related academic and thriving outcomes, and the influence of specific psychosocial and familial strengths and needs on those school outcomes. Specifically, students presenting with overweight concerns were more likely to be from lower socioeconomic backgrounds; have a high association with special education service needs; represent a more intensive overall risk level; manifest a diverse array of strengths and needs across academic, social-emotional/behavioral, family, and health/medical domains; and mostly exhibit poorer school performance. The effects of certain strengths and needs moderated school performance differences in several instances. Implications for theory, policy, and practice are discussed, with recommendations for future research.
