8. The impact of market orientation on small firm performance: a configurational approach

Abstract

Purpose: In this study, the authors examine the influence of market orientation on small firms' performance. The authors theorize that the association between market orientation and small firm performance provides an incomplete picture in a competitive environment. The application of configuration approach which involves simultaneous consideration of market orientation, strategic flexibility and competition intensity is crucial to examine driver of firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: The sample of the research study consists of 272 small firms from an emerging economy, India. Ordinary least squares regression has been used to investigate the hypothesized relationships. Findings: The authors noted that the three-way interaction between market orientation, strategic flexibility and competition intensity elucidates variance in small firm performance over and above a contingency model and a direct relationship. Research limitations/implications: The findings contribute to the existing literature by exhibiting the effect of market orientation on firm performance. The configuration model suggests that small firms can outperform competitors in a lower competitive environment if they have high market orientation and high strategic flexibility investment. To leverage market opportunities and achieve better firm performance, small firms’ owners should analyze the usefulness of current capabilities in a changing competitive environment concurrently and align market orientation to those conditions. Originality/value: The strategic management and marketing literature suggests that relationship between market orientation and performance is ambiguous. The findings offer insights to managers regarding the appropriate use of strategic flexibility in leveraging the benefits of market orientation in a highly competitive environment. Abstract

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable linear polyesters mainly produced by bacterial fermentation. These materials are biocompatible, non‐toxic, and have a low environmental impact, making them an excellent alternative to fossil‐based plastics in food packaging. Despite their promising characteristics, PHAs have several disadvantages, such as brittleness, slow nucleation process, thermal instability and consequently poor processability. In this article, poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hexanoate) (PHBHx), a copolymer belonging to the class of PHAs, was blended with polybutylene succinate‐co‐adipate (PBSA) and other process additives in order to improve its properties and realize a hot food container compostable in a domestic environment. The material in the pellet form was produced by reactive extrusion with a corotating twin‐screw extruder. The compound was then processed by cast extrusion and the resulting film was thermoformed into a rectangular container. All the semi‐finished products were characterized thermo‐mechanically and with chemical–physical tests, demonstrating good processability, thermal resistance of 100°C, complete impermeability to oxygen, transmission of light radiation less than 30% and high toughness (<5 kJ/m2). Abstract

The aim of this paper is to illustrate the phenomenon of corporate universities from the perspective of the evaluation of their performance. Corporate universities have a hybrid nature that can be referred to both as a business unit and as a higher education institution. Having reviewed the literature on corporate universities and performance evaluation of these kind of entities, we present the results of a survey on Italian corporate universities. Results shows that an appropriate framework for the evaluation of corporate university performance need to distinguish among the different types of corporate universities that are actually in place according to their mission and degree of openness to the external environment.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: An impaired HBsAg-secretion can increase HBV oncogenic-properties. Here, we investigate genetic-determinants in HBsAg correlated with HBV-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and their impact on HBsAg-secretion and cell-proliferation. METHODS: This study included 128 chronically HBV-infected patients: 23 with HCC (73.9% D; 26.1% A HBV-genotype), and 105 without cirrhosis/HCC (72.4% D, 27.6% A) as reference-group. The impact of mutations on HBsAg-secretion was assessed by measuring the ratio [secreted/intracellular HBsAg] until day 5 post-transfection. The impact of mutations on cell-cycle advancement was assessed by flow-cytometry. RESULTS: Two HBsAg mutations significantly correlated with HCC: P203Q (17.4% [4/23] in HCC vs 1.0% [1/105] in non-HCC, P=0.004); S210R (34.8% [8/23] in HCC vs 3.8% [4/105] in non-HCC, P <0.001); P203Q+S210R (17.4% [4/23] in HCC vs 0% [0/110] in non-HCC, P=0.001). Both mutations reside in trans-membrane C-terminal domain critical for HBsAg-secretion. In in-vitro experiments, P203Q, S210R and P203Q+S210R significantly reduced the ratio [secreted/intracellular HBsAg] compared to wt at each time-point analysed (P <0.05), supporting an impaired HBsAg-secretion. Furthermore, P203Q and P203Q+S210R increased the percentage of cells in S-phase compared to wt, indicating cell-cycle progression (P203Q:26±13%; P203Q+S210R:29±14%; wt:18%±9, P <0.01. Additionally, S210R increased the percentage of cells in G2/M-phase (26±8% for wt versus 33±6% for S210R, P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Specific mutations in HBsAg C-terminus significantly correlate with HBV-induced HCC. They hamper HBsAg-secretion and are associated with increased cellular proliferation, supporting their involvement in HCC-development. The identification of viral genetic markers associated with HCC is critical to identify patients at higher HCC-risk that may deserve intensive liver monitoring, and/or early anti-HBV therapy.

Abstract

Clinical Image: A 35-year-old ex-smoker varnisher man presented at our attention for a few days history of left thoracic pain, low-grade fever, asthenia, swelling of both parotid glands and dry eyes. Once excluded cardiac diseases, we performed physical examination which only revealed enlargement of both parotid glands (this was also confirmed from ultrasonography of the parotid glands; (Figure 1) and bloodshot eyes (with uveitis, as stated by the Ophthalmologist). The chest radiograph (Figure 2) showed the presence of bilateral hilar lyphoadenopathy. We so performed computed tomography of the thorax which confirmed the presence of lymphoadenopathy in paratracheal, subcarinal and hylar station associated with bilateral interstitial tickening of lung parenchyma (Figure 3). We performed bronchoscopy with transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) (using a histologic 19 G needle) in subcarinal station (station number 7 according to IASCL lymph node map) and in right interlobar station (station R11). Pathological tissue demostrated the presence of non-caseating granulomas without necrosis (Figure 4). He was given a diagnosis of Heerfordt’s syndrome, a rare form of sarcoidosis (present only in 6% of the cases of sarcoidosis) charactherized by the presence of enlargement of the parotid gland associated with major symptoms as uveitis, facial paralysis (absent in our case) or fever [1,2]. He was started on 50 mg of prednisone daily, and at follow-up 15 days later, he was completely asymphtomatic (and the swelling and bloodshot eyes resolved).
