As the signatories of this manifesto, we denounce the attention economy as inhumane and a threat to our sociopolitical and ecological well-being. We endorse policymakers' efforts to address the negative consequences of the attention economy's technology, but add that these approaches are often limited in their criticism of the systemic context of human attention. Starting from Buddhist philosophy, we advocate a broader approach: an ecology of attending, that centers on conceptualizing, designing, and using attention (1) in an embedded way and (2) focused on the alleviating of suffering. With 'embedded' we mean that attention is not a neutral, isolated mechanism but a meaning-engendering part of an 'ecology' of bodily, sociotechnical and moral frameworks. With 'focused on the alleviation of suffering' we explicitly move away from the (often implicit) conception of attention as a tool for gratifying desires., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer an efficient, inexpensive alternative to current photovoltaic technologies, with the potential for manufacture via high-throughput coating methods. However, challenges for commercial-scale solution-processing of metal-halide perovskites include the use of harmful solvents, the expense of maintaining controlled atmospheric conditions, and the inherent instabilities of PSCs under operation. Here, we address these challenges by introducing a high volatility, low toxicity, biorenewable solvent system to fabricate a range of 2D perovskites, which highly effective precursor phases for subsequent transformation to alpha-formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3), fully processed under ambient conditions. PSCs utilising our FAPbI3 reproducibly show remarkable stability under illumination and elevated temperature (ISOS-L-2) and "damp heat" (ISOS-D-3) stressing, surpassing other state-of-the-art perovskite compositions. We determine that this enhancement is a consequence of the 2D precursor phase crystallisation route, which simultaneously avoids retention of residual low-volatility solvents (such as DMF and DMSO) and reduces the rate of degradation of FA+ in the material. Our findings highlight both the critical role of the initial crystallisation process in determining the operational stability of perovskite materials, and that neat FA+-based perovskites can be competitively stable despite the inherent metastability of the alpha-phase.

Oscillatory complex networks in the metastable regime have been used to study the emergence of integrated and segregated activity in the brain, which are hypothesised to be fundamental for cognition. Yet, the parameters and the underlying mechanisms necessary to achieve the metastable regime are hard to identify, often relying on maximising the correlation with empirical functional connectivity dynamics. Here, we propose and show that the brain's hierarchically modular mesoscale structure alone can give rise to robust metastable dynamics and (metastable) chimera states in the presence of phase frustration. We construct unweighted $3$-layer hierarchical networks of identical Kuramoto-Sakaguchi oscillators, parameterized by the average degree of the network and a structural parameter determining the ratio of connections between and within blocks in the upper two layers. Together, these parameters affect the characteristic timescales of the system. Away from the critical synchronization point, we detect the emergence of metastable states in the lowest hierarchical layer coexisting with chimera and metastable states in the upper layers. Using the Laplacian renormalization group flow approach, we uncover two distinct pathways towards achieving the metastable regimes detected in these distinct layers. In the upper layers, we show how the symmetry-breaking states depend on the slow eigenmodes of the system. In the lowest layer instead, metastable dynamics can be achieved as the separation of timescales between layers reaches a critical threshold. Our results show an explicit relationship between metastability, chimera states, and the eigenmodes of the system, bridging the gap between harmonic based studies of empirical data and oscillatory models.

The local gravitational instability of rotating discs is believed to be an important mechanism in different astrophysical processes, including the formation of gas and stellar clumps in galaxies. We aim to study in three dimensions the local gravitational instability of two-component thick discs. We take as starting point a recently proposed analytic three-dimensional (3D) instability criterion for discs with non-negligible thickness which takes the form $Q_{\rm 3D}<1$, where $Q_{\rm 3D}$ is a 3D version of the classical 2D Toomre $Q$ parameter for razor-thin discs. Here we extend the 3D stability analysis to two-component discs, considering first the influence on $Q_{\rm 3D}$ of a second unresponsive component, and then the case in which both components are responsive. We present the application to two-component discs with isothermal vertical distributions, which can represent, for instance, galactic discs with both stellar and gaseous components. Finally, we relax the assumption of vertical isothermal distribution, by studying one-component self-gravitating discs with polytropic vertical distributions for a range of values of the polytropic index corresponding to convectively stable configurations. We find that $Q_{\rm 3D}<1$, where $Q_{\rm 3D}$ can be computed from observationally inferred quantities, is a robust indicator of local gravitational instability, depending only weakly on the presence of a second component and on the vertical gradient of temperature or velocity dispersion. The halide perovskite CsPbBr$_3$ belongs to the Cs-Pb-Br material system, which features two additional thermodynamically stable ternary phases, Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$ and CsPb$_2$Br$_5$. The coexistence of these phases and their reportedly similar photoluminescence have resulted in a debate on the nature of the emission in these systems. Here, we combine optical and microscopic characterization with an effective mass, correlated electron-hole model of excitons in confined systems, to investigate the emission properties of the ternary phases in the Cs-Pb-Br system. We find that all Cs-Pb-Br phases exhibit green emission and the non-perovskite phases exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields orders of magnitude larger than CsPbBr$_3$. In particular, we measure blue- and red-shifted emission for the Cs- and Pb-rich phases, respectively, stemming from embedded CsPbBr$_3$ nanocrystals. Our model reveals that the difference in emission shift is caused by the combined effects of nanocrystal size and different band mismatch. Furthermore, we demonstrate the importance of including the dielectric mismatch in the calculation of the emission energy for Cs-Pb-Br composites. Our results explain the reportedly limited blue shift in CsPbBr$_3$@Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$ composites and rationalize some of its differences with CsPb$_2$Br$_5$.

Perovskite semiconductors have demonstrated outstanding external luminescence quantum yields, enabling high power conversion efficiencies (PCE). However, the precise conditions to advance to an efficiency regime above monocrystalline silicon cells are not well understood. Here, we establish a simulation model that well describes efficient p-i-n type perovskite solar cells and a range of different experiments. We then study important device and material parameters and we find that an efficiency regime of 30% can be unlocked by optimizing the built-in potential across the perovskite layer by using either highly doped (10^19 cm-3), thick transport layers (TLs) or ultrathin undoped TLs, e.g. self-assembled monolayers. Importantly, we only consider parameters that have been already demonstrated in recent literature, that is a bulk lifetime of 10 us, interfacial recombination velocities of 10 cm/s, a perovskite bandgap of 1.5 eV and an EQE of 95%. A maximum efficiency of 31% is predicted for a bandgap of 1.4 eV. Finally, we demonstrate that the relatively high mobile ion density does not represent a significant barrier to reach this efficiency regime. Thus, the results of this paper promise continuous PCE improvements until perovskites may become the most efficient single-junction solar cell technology in the near future.

The incorporation of even small amounts of strontium (Sr) into lead-based quadruple cation hybrid perovskite solar cells results in a systematic increase of the open circuit voltage (Voc) in pin-type perovskite solar cells. We demonstrate via transient and absolute photoluminescence (PL) experiments how the incorporation of Sr significantly reduces the non-radiative recombination losses in the neat perovskite layer and specifically at the perovskite/C60 interface. We show that Sr segregates at the perovskite surface, where it induces important changes of morphology and energetics. Notably, the Sr-enriched surface exhibits a wider band gap and a more n-type character, accompanied with significantly stronger surface band bending. As a result, we observe a significant increase of the quasi-Fermi level splitting in the neat perovskite by reduced surface recombination and more importantly, a strong reduction of losses attributed to non-radiative recombination at the interface to the C60 electron-transporting layer. The resulting solar cells exhibited a Voc of 1.18 V, which could be further improved to nearly 1.23 V through addition of a thin polymer interlayer, bringing the non-radiative voltage loss to only 110 meV. Our work shows that simply adding a small amount of Sr to the precursor solutions induces a beneficial surface modification in the perovskite, without requiring any post treatment, resulting in high efficiency solar cells with power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 20.3%. Charge transport layers (CTLs) are key components of diffusion controlled perovskite solar cells, however, they can induce additional non-radiative recombination pathways which limit the open circuit voltage (V_OC) of the cell. In order to realize the full thermodynamic potential of the perovskite absorber, both the electron and hole transport layer (ETL/HTL) need to be as selective as possible. By measuring the quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS) of perovskite/CTL heterojunctions, we quantify the non-radiative interfacial recombination current for a wide range of commonly used CTLs, including various hole-transporting polymers, spiro-OMeTAD, metal oxides and fullerenes. We find that all studied CTLs limit the V_OC by inducing an additional non-radiative recombination current that is significantly larger than the loss in the neat perovskite and that the least-selective interface sets the upper limit for the V_OC of the device. The results also show that the V_OC equals the internal QFLS in the absorber layer of (pin, nip) cells with selective CTLs and power conversion efficiencies of up to 21.4%. However, in case of less selective CTLs, the V_OC is substantially lower than the QFLS which indicates additional losses at the contacts and/or interfaces. The findings are corroborated by rigorous device simulations which outline several important considerations to maximize the V_OC. This work shows that the real challenge to supress non-radiative recombination losses in perovskite cells on their way to the radiative limit lies in the suppression of carrier recombination at the perovskite/CTL interfaces., Comment: Update of Figure 3 and Figure S9 and new Figure S10 added
