It is significant to investigate the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation mechanism during the carbon capture process; nevertheless, CaCO3 precipitation is not clearly understood yet. Understanding the carbonation mechanism at the atomic level can contribute to the mineralization capture and utilization of carbon dioxide, as well as the development of new cementitious materials with high-performance. There are many factors, such as temperature and CO2 concentration, that can influence the carbonation reaction. In order to achieve better carbonation efficiency, the reaction conditions of carbonation should be fully verified. Therefore, based on molecular dynamics simulations, this paper investigates the atomic-scale mechanism of carbonation. We investigate the effect of carbonation factors, including temperature and concentration, on the kinetics of carbonation (polymerization rate and activation energy), the early nucleation of calcium carbonate, etc. Then, we analyze the local stresses of atoms to reveal the driving force of early stage carbonate nucleation and the reasons for the evolution of polymerization rate and activation energy. Results show that the higher the calcium concentration or temperature, the higher the polymerization rate of calcium carbonate. Agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and is vulnerable to climate change. Regenerative agriculture, which focuses on increasing soil carbon, has been recognized as a potential climate solution. A recent study found that seven regenerative practices, including planting cover crops and using non-chemical fertilizers, all increased carbon sequestration. However, the study also highlights that regenerative agriculture has other benefits beyond carbon sequestration, and the focus should not solely be on carbon credits. Contemporary resource management is doubly burdened by high rates of organic material disposal in landfills, generating potent greenhouse gases (GHG), and globally degraded soils, which threaten future food security. Expansion of composting can provide a resilient alternative, by avoiding landfill GHG emissions, returning valuable nutrients to the soil to ensure continued agricultural production, and sequestering carbon while supporting local communities. Recognizing this opportunity, California has set ambitious organics diversion targets in the Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Law (SB1383) which will require significant increases (5 to 8 million tonnes per year) in organic material processing capacity. This paper develops a spatial optimization model to consider how to handle this flow of additional material while achieving myriad social and ecological benefits through compost production. We consider community-based and on-farm facilities alongside centralized, large-scale infrastructure to explore decentralized and diversified alternative futures of composting infrastructure in the state of California. We find using a diversity of facilities would provide opportunity for cost savings while achieving significant emissions reductions of approximately 3.4 ± 1 MMT CO2e and demonstrate that it is possible to incorporate community protection into compost infrastructure planning while meeting economic and environmental objectives.

Tropical rainforests of Latin America (LATAM) are one of the world's largest carbon sinks, with substantial future carbon sequestration potential and contributing a major proportion of the global supply of forest carbon credits. LATAM is poised to contribute predominantly towards high-quality forest carbon offset projects designed to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, halt biodiversity loss, and provide equitable conservation benefits to people. Thus, carbon markets, including compliance carbon markets and voluntary carbon markets continue to expand in LATAM. However, the extent of the growth and status of forest carbon markets, pricing initiatives, stakeholders, amongst others, are yet to be explored and extensively reviewed for the entire LATAM region. Against this backdrop, we reviewed a total of 299 articles, including peer-reviewed and non-scientific gray literature sources, from January 2010 to March 2023. Herein, based on the extensive literature review, we present the results and provide perspectives classified into five categories: (i) the status and recent trends of forest carbon markets (ii) the interested parties and their role in the forest carbon markets, (iii) the measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) approaches and role of remote sensing, (iv) the challenges, and (v) the benefits, opportunities, future directions and recommendations to enhance forest carbon markets in LATAM. Despite the substantial challenges, better governance structures for forest carbon markets can increase the number, quality and integrity of projects and support the carbon sequestration capacity of the rainforests of LATAM. Due to the complex and extensive nature of forest carbon projects in LATAM, emerging technologies like remote sensing can enable scale and reduce technical barriers to MRV, if properly benchmarked. The future directions and recommendations provided are intended to improve upon the existing infrastructure and governance mechanisms, and encourage further participation from the public and private sectors in forest carbon markets in LATAM.

Microbial community dynamics on sinking particles control the amount of carbon that reaches the deep ocean and the length of time that carbon is stored, with potentially profound impacts on Earths climate. A mechanistic understanding of the controls on sinking particle distributions has been hindered by limited depth- and time-resolved sampling and methods that cannot distinguish individual particles. Here, we analyze microbial communities on nearly 400 individual sinking particles in conjunction with more conventional composite particle samples to determine how particle colonization and community assembly might control carbon sequestration in the deep ocean. We observed community succession with corresponding changes in microbial metabolic potential on the larger sinking particles transporting a significant fraction of carbon to the deep sea. Microbial community richness decreased as particles aged and sank; however, richness increased with particle size and the attenuation of carbon export. This suggests that the theory of island biogeography applies to sinking marine particles. Changes in POC flux attenuation with time and microbial community composition with depth were reproduced in a mechanistic ecosystem model that reflected a range of POC labilities and microbial growth rates. Our results highlight microbial community dynamics and processes on individual sinking particles, the isolation of which is necessary to improve mechanistic models of ocean carbon uptake.

The iron and steel-making industries have garnered significant attention in research related to low-carbon transitions and the reuse of steel slag. This industry is known for its high carbon emissions and the substantial amount of steel slag it generates. To address these challenges, a waste heat recovery process route has been developed for molten steel slag, which integrates CO 2 capture and fixation as well as efficient utilization of steel slag. This process involves the use of lime kiln flue gas from the steel plant as the gas quenching agent, thereby mitigating carbon emissions and facilitating carbonation conversion of steel slag while simultaneously recovering waste heat. The established carbonation model of steel slag reveals that the insufficient diffusion of CO 2 gas molecules within the product layer is the underlying mechanism hindering the carbonation performance of steel slag. This finding forms the basis for enhancing the carbonation performance of steel slag. The results of Aspen Plus simulation indicate that 1 t of steel slag (with a carbonation conversion rate of 15.169 %) can fix 55.19 kg of CO 2 , process 6.08 kmol of flue gas (with a carbon capture rate of 92.733 %), and recover 2.04 GJ of heat, 0.43 GJ of exergy, and 0.68 MWh of operating cost. These findings contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient solutions for steel slag management, with potential applications in the steel production industry and other relevant fields. Metal smelting and combustion of solid fuels produce significant quantities of waste slag, leading to issues such as land occupation and environmental pollution. Understanding and controlling the microscale crystallization phenomena of these slags during thermal treatment is crucial for transforming waste slags into materials suitable for carbon capture or glass ceramics. Previous research has primarily focused on macroscopic crystallization behaviors, significantly advancing the utilization of waste slags in cement clinker production. However, macroscopic results are inadequate for precisely controlling the microscale crystallization behaviors of waste slags. Here, we employed the single hot thermocouple technique to visually explore crystal growth modes, shapes, sizes, numbers, and translational rates of the crystal growth front in a representative blast furnace slag under various isothermal temperatures. The results revealed that crystals exhibited five modes as the isothermal temperature gradually increased, including equiaxed, equiaxed & columnar, columnar, columnar & planar, and planar. Moreover, the translational rate of the crystal growth front increased from 0.011 μm·s−1 to 43.7 μm·s−1 with an increase in the isothermal temperature. Simultaneously, the number of crystals decreased from around 104 to 100 μm−2. The fast developing world is in search of measures to control the accumulation of unused by‐products and waste materials generated during the production of useful commodities. Accordingly, wastes from agro‐industrial sectors can form raw materials for the production of various resources that are extensively used in many areas such as gas sorption and energy production. In the present work, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), the vesicant liquid present in the outer shell of cashew seed, forms the source material for the synthesis of porous organic polymers for carbon dioxide capture. Herein, novel types of hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are synthesized via a simple Friedel–Crafts reaction with CNSL as the starting material. Polymerization of natural CNSL with dimethoxymethane/bis‐(chloromethyl)‐biphenyl as external crosslinker provides products in quantitative yield. One of the synthesized HCP is tuned to attain the required high porosity by carbonization at elevated temperatures using an activator. Thus, activated carbon material prepared at 700°C is found to have a high surface area of 880 m2/g with a good carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of 14.72 wt%. The pursuit of high efficacy C−C coupling during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction remains a tremendous challenge owing to the high energy barrier of CO2 activation and insufficient coverage of the desired intermediates on catalytic sites. Inspired by the concept of capture‐coupled CO2 activation, we fabricated quinone‐grafted carbon nanofibers via an in situ oxidative carbonylation strategy. The quinone functionality of carbon nanofibers promotes the capture of CO2 followed by activation. At a current density of 400 mA cm−2, the Faradaic efficiency of ethylene reached 62.9 %, and a partial current density of 295 mA cm−2 was achieved on the quinone‐rich carbon nanofibers. The results of in situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations indicated that the remarkable selectivity enhancement in ethylene originates from the quinone structure, rather than the electronic properties of Cu particles. The interaction of quinone with CO2 increases the local *CO coverage and simultaneously hinders the co‐adsorption of *H on Cu sites, which greatly reduces the energy barrier for C−C coupling and restrains subsequent *CO protonation. The modulation strategy involving specific oxygenated structure, as an independent degree of freedom, guides the design of functionalized carbon materials for tailoring the selectivity of desired products during the CO2 capture and reduction. The electrification of chemical processes holds promise for a sustainable and climate-neutral chemical industry. This study explores pathways for electrifying syngas production, targeting its utilization in low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch (LT-FT) technology with a hydrocarbon production capacity of 222 kton/yr. Three electrified scenarios are juxtaposed against a reference case of autothermal reforming of biomethane. In the first two scenarios, H 2 is produced via water electrolysis, with CO obtained either through CO 2 electrolysis (Electrolysis case) or electrified reverse water-gas shift (E-rWGS case). The third scenario leverages captured CO 2 and biomethane for electrified combined steam and dry reforming of methane (CSDRM case), exhibiting the lowest net emissions of 0.50 ton CO2 /ton product. All electrified scenarios achieve net negative emissions under the EU's 2030 target of 40% overall renewable energy production. A detailed techno-economic analysis reveals significant feasibility challenges with the Electrolysis, E-rWGS, and CSDRM cases exhibiting a Levelized Cost Of Production (LCOP) of $501, $457, and $251 per barrel (bbl) of Fischer-Tropsch crude, respectively. Future projections suggest considerable capital cost reductions for electrolyzers, potentially rendering the Electrolysis case feasible, particularly under extremely low electricity prices of 3.3 $/MWh. Careful consideration of green electricity and CO 2 utilization scenarios is vital for implementing CO 2 -negative technologies effectively. Hydrogen power and electric vehicle rollout are among the global mitigation efforts for net-zero emission targets. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) is a promising embodiment of these two climate-neutral levers. Nevertheless, insufficient investigation of the life cycle of hydrogen production pathways and supply-demand mismatching jeopardize the optimal implementation of HFCV. A novel integrated framework combining life cycle greenhouse gas assessment and intra-regional supply-demand optimization method is developed to (1) evaluate the emissions performance for six typical HFCV hydrogen production pathways and (2) map out the optimal intra-regional hydrogen supply-demand allocation based on the trade-off between resource flow and geographical proximity. As one of the world's largest HFCV producers and consumers, China is chosen as the case study. The life cycle emissions assessment reveals that the Natural Gas Steam Methane Reforming (NG_SMR) pathway emits the most greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (i.e., 0.215 g CO 2 -eq/kJ H 2) while the Clean Energy_Water Electrolysis (CE_WE) pathway emits the least GHG emissions (i.e., 0.02 g CO 2 -eq/kJ H 2), stretching a 10-times emission difference. For intra-regional supply-demand optimization, provinces like Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Shandong act as the main suppliers (>50% of the total hydrogen source in China) to provinces like Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Sichuan, suggesting a north-to-south (N-S) regional hydrogen transmission. A sensitivity analysis is conducted based on the variation in production efficiency among different hydrogen production technologies in the HFCV value chain. The results inferred that the Coal Gasification & Carbon Capture and Storage (C l G & CCS) and CE_WE pathways are insensitive to efficiency improvement. In the scenario analysis, the outcome suggested urgently phasing out grey hydrogen pathways and accelerating the transition of grey-to-green hydrogen production pathways with the buffering of blue hydrogen pathways between 2015 and 2040 for the net-zero emission ambition by 2060. This study enlightens the decision-makers to endorse green hydrogen production for HFCV while securing hydrogen energy security. Blue hydrogen (H 2) serves as a pivotal initial step towards emissions reduction and a seamless transition to green hydrogen by providing a cleaner alternative to grey hydrogen. Blue H 2 can be obtained through diverse pathways (i.e. , distinct processes and stages) within the hydrogen supply network (HSN), resulting in varying greenhouse gas emission levels. This paper uses the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to compare 18 different blue HSN pathways. Blue hydrogen is produced from three different processes (i.e. , Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), Partial Oxidation of Methane (POM), and Auto-Thermal Reforming (ATR)) that are coupled with carbon capture unit (CCU). Moreover, it can be conditioned to different states or carriers (i.e. , liquefied H 2 , compressed H 2 , ammonia, and methanol), stored using various methods, transported by different means according to its state, and reconditioned to its original state at end-users. The LCA results indicate that the NH 3 pathway has the least environmental impact measuring just 2.12 kgCO 2equ / kgH 2 compared to the other 18 blue HSN pathways. This pathway involves producing hydrogen from ATR process coupled with CCS, and eventually delivering as ammonia to consumers. Additionally, the blue H 2 results of this paper are compared to the green H 2 results discussed in the previous paper. The comparison highlights that integrating renewable energy in the form concentrated photovoltaic collectors produces the lowest emissions compared to all pathways. The United States' focus on decarbonization has spawned interest among policymakers in deploying water electrolysis technology for clean hydrogen production. However, water electrolyzers also raise concerns regarding their substantial use of carbon-intensive materials. Here, we conduct a comprehensive life-cycle analysis (LCA) of three prominent water electrolyzer technologies to investigate the environmental implications of their manufacturing and life cycles under different energy sources. All electrolyzer technologies employing low-carbon energy (nuclear, solar, or wind) exhibit life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 0.3–2.4 kg-CO 2-eq /kg-H 2. This is significantly lower than the corresponding GHG emissions for hydrogen production via both conventional steam methane reforming and alternative autothermal reforming with carbon capture and storage (by > 50%). The scale at which New Zealand is currently storing and sequestering blue carbon, and could create additional blue carbon via restoration, has been unclear. Here, we calculate a preliminary estimate for the current extent of three key blue carbon ecosystems (saltmarshes, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows), their carbon stocks and their carbon sequestration rates using the best available data to provide a preliminary estimate of blue carbon in New Zealand. We also use local examples to explore opportunities to create additional blue carbon. Based on the available literature, we estimate the current extent of New Zealand's blue carbon ecosystems to be 76,152 ha, which is 1.0% of the area of terrestrial native forests. Our preliminary estimate of New Zealand's blue carbon stock is 2.66–3.76 Mt of carbon, with a current carbon sequestration rate of 0.12 (0.05–0.26) Mt/CO2/yr, which is equivalent to 0.16% of New Zealand's 2021 gross emissions. Restoration of saltmarshes could enhance their carbon sink capacity, mangrove forests are naturally expanding and seagrass meadow restoration techniques at scale are still in development. Siliceous diatoms are one of the most prominent actors in the oceans, and they account for approximately 40% of the primary production and particulate organic carbon export flux. It is believed that changes in carbon flux caused by variations in diatom distribution can lead to significant climate shifts. Although the fundamental pathways of diatom-driven carbon sequestration have long been established, there are no reports of CaCO3 precipitation induced by marine diatom species. This manuscript introduces novel details regarding the enhancement of aragonite precipitation during photosynthesis in Skeletonema costatum in both artificial and natural seawater. Through direct measurements of cell surfaces via a pH microelectrode and zeta potential analyzer, it was determined that the diatom-mediated promotion of CaCO3 precipitation is achieved through the creation of specific microenvironments with concentrated [CO32−] and [Ca2+] and/or the dehydrating effect of adsorbed Ca2+. Based on this mechanism, it is highly plausible that diatom-mediated calcification could occur in the oceans, an assertion that was supported by the significant deviation of total alkalinity (TA) from the conservative TA-salinity mixing line during a Skeletonema costatum bloom in the East China Sea and other similar occurrences. The newly discovered calcification pathway establishes a link between particulate inorganic and organic carbon flux and thus helps in the reassessment of marine carbon export fluxes and CO2 sequestration efficiency. Economic development and industrialization are usually associated with severe environmental pollution. Differently, China's poverty alleviation programs did not compromise its environment for the sake of economic development. China has lifted hundreds of poverty-stricken counties out of absolute poverty following the implementation of various poverty alleviation policies. We take a staggered difference-in-difference approach within a quasi-experiment to examine the effects of "poverty hat" removal on air pollution. Using panel data of poverty-stricken counties in China for the period 2013–2018, we identify the causal effects on PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 concentration reduction. Our results suggest that removing the poverty hat prompted the counties to reduce their air pollution. Biochar is recognized for its potential in mitigating climate change, especially through carbon sequestration and soil improvement. To this end, it is important to use all co-products from pyrolysis in a sustainable and economically viable way. In this study, the conversion of sugarcane bagasse at varying pyrolysis temperatures was investigated using 1H NMR spectroscopy and Chenomx for liquid fraction analysis. The yield of biochar decreased significantly from 45.3 to 3.5% with a temperature increase of 300 to 1000 °C. The morphological analysis revealed that biochar produced at lower temperatures (300 °C and 400 °C) showed tubular and spongy structures, whereas at higher temperatures (600 °C and 800 °C), the structures morphed into holes and thinned further, ultimately degrading further at 1000 °C. All samples of biochar showed characteristics promising for soil improvement and carbon sequestration (O/C < 0.4). The analysis of liquid fractions revealed that biomethanol reached its highest concentration of 19.28 mM at 800 °C, which coincided with the highest production of acetic and lactic acids. Additionally, the highest concentration of acetone was observed at 600 °C. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing pyrolysis conditions for enhanced yields of biochar and platform compounds, as well as the potential of the NMR and Chenomx in bioenergy research. Due to the demand for carbon neutrality, concrete carbonation has been reconsidered as an interesting topic because of its potential for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Concrete carbonation can significantly modify the chemical and microstructure properties of concrete and thus will have important effects on chloride diffusion. This paper presents a chloride diffusion model in which the concrete cover is divided into three different zones, each with their own defined porosity and chloride binding isotherm. The first is the fully carbonated concrete near the surface, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of fully carbonated concrete. The second is the uncarbonated concrete near the reinforcement, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of normal concrete. The third is the transition zone between the fully carbonated and uncarbonated concretes, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be assumed to vary continuously from the carbonated concrete to uncarbonated concrete. To validate the present model, a comparison of the present model with published experimental results is provided, which demonstrates the importance of considering different zones in the chloride diffusion model when the concrete has a carbonated layer near the surface. Industrial exhaust gases and gas fields are two significant sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that contribute to the rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. Among the various emission reduction systems, the CCSU (Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization) system has garnered extensive attention and research. This research aims to obtain the superstructure network sequentially in the CCSU system using GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System). A mathematical approach was developed to optimize the amount of CO2 stored and utilized by varying the time difference (dt) between the source and sink from 0 to 10 years. After calculating the economic potential (EP), it was found that the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system for both sources has a negative impact. In contrast, the CCSU system enhances the economic potential (EP) by generating a positive value. This is possible as the captured CO2 can be sold to the utilization sink, thereby creating a revenue stream. The EP for CO2 reduction from gas fields is greater than that from the industry, 21.68 × 106 USD compared to 12.50 × 106 USD at dt min10 years. For the marine industry biofouling has a negative reputation. On ship hulls, the accumulation of these unwanted plants and animals can lead to increased drag, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Offshore platforms are also subject to biofouling which can result in corrosion and hydrodynamic loading, thus shortening their lifespan. While the harmful impacts of biofouling are commonly reported throughout the literature, biofouling can also benefit both aquatic and human populations. Common biofouling organisms act as natural filtration systems, thus improving water quality. Many of the same flora and fauna serve as a food source, and structures could be designed to lessen the impacts of fouling on hydrodynamic forces. In addition, microfouling species commonly found in biofilms have the potential to be harnessed as biofuel sources and can be a component of the carbon cycle. The following review discusses the benefits of biofouling and why ecological engineering initiatives may aid in ecosystem restoration versus the use of antifouling techniques for preventative growth. Carbon sequestration in terrestrial vegetation can't be underestimated in terms of offsetting CO2 emissions from energy consumption. However, it is not clear to what extent terrestrial vegetation can offset energy-related CO2 emissions, and how effective it is to achieve regional carbon neutrality through vegetation carbon sinks. To clarify the offsetting effect of vegetation carbon sink on energy carbon emissions and support the promotion of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality, we selected the Yangtze River basin (YRB) as the research area, and explored the spatial distribution and service coverage of vegetation-energy carbon balance (VECB) in the basin at the grid scale. We also analyzed the ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance within the basin, and estimated spatial distribution of energy carbon emissions by using nighttime light images and panel data model. Spatial distribution of vegetation carbon sequestration was calculated by using net primary productivity (NPP) and the Intelligent Urban Ecosystem Management System (IUEMS). Finally, the ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance was quantified by introducing gas diffusion coefficient. Results showed that, on the whole, energy carbon emissions in YRB are distributed along the main Yangtze River and its main tributaries. Vegetation carbon sink in YRB mainly circulates around the Sichuan Basin and aggregates in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. From 2000 to 2019, VECB in 58% of the basin increased. In 85% of the basin, CO2 generated by energy consumption can be completely offset by vegetation carbon sinks alone. In 2000, 2010 and 2019, the average offset ratio of vegetation to energy carbon emissions in the carbon imbalance region was 51.8%, 40.5% and 39.7%, respectively. The ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance in YRB decreased gradually from 2000 to 2019. The second‐law analysis evaluates the irreversibilities of a process. Systematic study of the relationship between thermodynamic efficiency and process modifications enhances process synthesis. The Allam cycle is an oxy‐fuel combustion cycle with nearly complete carbon capture that offers greater efficiency than current electricity generating systems. This study applies lost work analysis to the original Allam cycle and three modifications to obtain the distribution of irreversibilities and the effects of different configurations among potential process improvements for more sustainable power generation. The major inefficiencies are from the combustors and heat exchangers. We also examine the economic profitability of the alternatives. The largest equipment costs are for the turbines, compressors, and recuperators. We find that improving efficiency leads to less economic return; a configuration with partial compression has the highest efficiency, while the original Allam cycle has the highest profitability. Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology for decarbonization through the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. In many DAC processes, the regeneration energy used to restore the capture capacity of sorbents accounts for a significant fraction of the energy required by the whole process. Here we report an effective and scalable sorbent regeneration method for liquid DAC solvents based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) heating with AC magnetic fields. MNPs can be directly heated to provide uniform and rapid volumetric heating, as we demonstrate by promoting the release of captured CO2 from an aqueous solution of potassium sarcosinate. Our results showed that 90% of the solvent can be regenerated within 7.5 min of heating through proposed technique. The MNPs and solvent are found to be stable during the regeneration process and the MNPs showed long‐term stability in the CO2‐saturated solvent. Cyclic experiments showed that the nanoparticles can be reused for multiple cycles without performance deterioration. The process is operated in a noncontact mode through electromagnetic waves, making it an adoptable approach for existing carbon capture systems. Ionic liquid (IL) can not only serve as solvents to reduce carbon capture energy consumption, but also may activate the CO2 absorption of amine solutions. Here, the absorption mechanism and kinetic modeling of IL‐activated single and mixed amines were studied in wetted wall column. N‐(2‐aminoethyl) ethanolamine (AEEA) and N,N‐diethylethanolamine (DEEA) were used as representatives to evaluate the IL activation effects on primary and tertiary amines. It was found that IL activated the reaction process of primary amine, but had no activation effect on tertiary amine. The activation energy of AEEA‐IL‐CO2 was 22.2 kJ/mol, which was 21.0% lower than AEEA‐CO2. Kinetic modeling of IL‐activated AEEA and mixed amines was established. Besides, the density functional theory calculations showed that IL can form hydrogen bonding and other interactions with AEEA and CO2 to activate the absorption reaction, which can reduce 29.3% activation energy during the zwitterion formation stage. Direct air capture (DAC) is a negative emission technology for removing CO2 from the atmosphere to maintain the CO2 level within a reasonable range so as to address greenhouse effects. In this study, the operational optimization of lab‐scale DAC has been investigated using a crossflow air‐liquid contactor loaded with a three dimensionally printed Gyroid packing structure and a potassium sarcosinate solvent. The effects of various parameters, including feed air flow rate, liquid solvent flow rate, contactor geometry, and ambient temperature, are examined. The results demonstrate that the Gyroid packing design achieves comparable CO2 capture performance to conventional packed beds but with a significantly lower pressure drop of up to 77.8%, suggesting its potential as an efficient and cost‐effective solution for gas–liquid contactors in DAC. Additionally, the study explores the climate impact on CO2 capture performance and finds that as the air temperature increases from 35 to 95°F at a fixed relative humidity of 80%, the CO2 capture rate increased from 23.2% to 46.8% with better stability. The research highlights the importance of optimizing contactor design and operational conditions to improve the CO2 capture rate and feasibility of DAC systems as a negative emission technology for addressing greenhouse effects. This study contributes to the literature examining public acceptance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the US. The examination of factors that shape public support for CCS projects provides policymakers with insights to address public concerns, balance CCS development with public sentiments, and make informed decisions about optimal locations and timing. Based on a nationally representative survey on 1850 respondents, the study finds that in the US, there is very low familiarity (6.4%) regarding CCS technology and some limited opposition (11.5%) to increased CCS development. Regression results suggest that support for increased CCS projects in the US is influenced by perceptions of technical and social risks (leakage and community danger, respectively) but not cost of living risks, perceptions of environmental and economic benefits, familiarity with the technology, confidence in government regulations, and a desire for the US to lead in CCS. We fail to find the 'Not-in-My-Backyard' effect, and individuals supporting the development of more CCS in their states also support it at a national level. This paper analyzed farmers' willingness to accept (WTA) payment and uncertainties toward carbon market through a 2021 U.S. Midwest farmer survey. The findings showed that farmer carbon supply was elastic at intermediate prices ($20–50/Mg), but inelastic at low ($10–20/Mg) and high ($50–70/Mg) price levels. While perceived co‐benefits play significant roles in promoting participation at low‐price levels, variables such as age, education, farm size, and soil quality are more likely to influence producers' choices at intermediate‐ and high‐price levels. We use a panel smooth transition regression model to investigate the influence of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) rental rates on land enrollment under different crop price regimes. We employ a flexible estimation technique, allowing the CRP rental rate incentives to vary with crop prices, and construct a Hausman‐type instrumental variable to address endogeneity. Simulations are conducted to assess the impact of varying crop prices on CRP acreage and its associated environmental effects. Results reveal a nonlinear relationship between rental rates and enrollment, with the impact diminishing as crop prices increase. A 10% rise in CRP rental rates corresponds to a 5.1% expansion in enrollment, reducing to 4.2% when crop prices reach a specific threshold. High crop prices lead to fewer acres enrolled, decreased carbon sequestration, increased phosphorus and nitrogen runoff, and increased sediment loss. Our findings highlight the importance of considering price fluctuations in conservation planning as it has significant implications for environmental conservation policies and programs. Prairie cropping systems face several challenges, including high input costs and climate change. Research to address these challenges has focused on above-ground agronomic parameters while completely ignoring the role roots play below ground. The objectives of this review study are to (i) synthesize past root studies carried out in the Canadian Prairies, (ii) provide a context for prairie root research, and (iii) identify gaps for future research. This review reports that root architectural traits of major crops have been assessed under field and greenhouse conditions in soil, artificial media, and a mixture of both soil and media, mostly under natural/well-watered and drought conditions. Several root traits have been compared for major crops grown with respect to moisture levels and nutrient uptake. A dearth of research exists on the complex relationship between root traits, soil microbiome, nutrient uptake, carbon sequestration, and photosynthetic efficiency. No studies were found relating root traits, fertilizer placement, and nitrogen and water use efficiencies, carbon sequestration, soil microbiome dynamics, and common root diseases. This review also reports that more research and funding are needed to exploit the benefits that root research will bring to further sustainability goals and ensure food security in the Canadian Prairies. Cement industry, due to the decomposition of CaCO 3 and the production of clinker, emits large amounts of CO 2 into the atmosphere. This anthropogenic gas can be captured and through its synthesis with green hydrogen, methanol and finally synthetic fuels are achieved. By using e-fuel, Europe's climate neutrality objectives could be achieved. However, the energy transition still lacks a clear roadmap, and decisions are strongly affected by the geopolitical situation, the energy demand and the economy. Therefore, different scenarios are analysed to assess the influence of key factors on the overall economic viability of the process: 1) A business-as-usual scenario, EU perspectives 2) allowing e-fuels and 3) improving H 2 production processes. The technical feasibility of the production of synthetic fuels is verified. The most optimistic projections indicate future production costs of synthetic fuels will be lower than those of fossil fuels. This is directly related to the cost of green hydrogen production. The urgency of addressing climate change, energy security, and ecological concerns has driven the global shift towards renewable energy systems. In this transformative era, green hydrogen emerges as a pivotal energy resource, promising substantial reductions in global emissions. Methods like water electrolysis, biomass gasification, and methane reforming with carbon capture and storage offer pathways to synthesize hydrogen without greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, hydrogen accounts for approximately 4% of global energy generation, with projections suggesting this could increase to 10% by 2030 and 20% by 2050. Integrating nuclear energy into hydrogen production presents a low-carbon option, promoting reliability and meeting growing demand across sectors. For instance, incorporating nuclear energy could reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional methods. Categorizing hydrogen production into colors based on emissions provides a framework for understanding their environmental and socio-economic profiles. Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils is crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of global climate change and enhancing soil fertility. Among various crops, tea plantations show significant promise in adopting carbon sequestration practices. Consequently, the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu was purposefully selected for the study, involving 120 tea growers chosen using the snowball sampling method. A theoretical framework was developed to assess the factors influencing tea grower’s adoption of carbon sequestration practices. Partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyse the gathered data. The results demonstrated that factors such as ‘knowledge’, ‘attitude’, ‘innovativeness’, ‘perceived benefits’ and ‘perceived need’ had a significant and positive influence on tea grower’s adoption of carbon sequestration practices. In contrast, ‘social influence’ had no significant effect, underscoring the importance of increasing awareness, providing financial incentives, establishing pricing structures, and implementing government policies related to soil carbon sequestration. Enhanced weathering of terrestrial rock material is a promising method for the removal of anthropogenic CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. Herein, we demonstrate that an ameliorated mining waste product can be effectively weathered in the soil environment when used as a soil amendment in conjunction with the cultivation of fast-growing willows (Salix matsudana Koidz. χ S. alba L. "Austree") in a pot study environment. Utilizing this locally sourced amendment minimizes emissions associated with grinding and transportation of enhanced weathering materials. Results showed that the willows were able to tolerate the relatively high metal concentrations of this amendment and sequester inorganic carbon (C) through the production of bicarbonate in soil solution. During the period of peak plant growth (10 weeks after planting), alkalinity measurements of soil solution from pots with willows and the addition of 25% by mass mine waste product indicated an additional 10 mg of inorganic C sequestration per liter of leached soil solution compared to unamended soils with willows. This represents 4.5 times the inorganic C sequestration rate of unamended soils. The addition of ameliorated mining waste also increased the pH of the soil solution by up to two units (pH of 6 in control vs. pH of 8 with the addition of 25% by mass mineral amendment). In addition to inorganic C sequestration, weathering of the ameliorated mining waste product may also provide base cations (such as calcium and magnesium) which could improve soil fertility. These results are encouraging for future investigation of ameliorated mine waste rock to sequester carbon and enhance the production of willows grown for ecosystem services and phytotechnologies. Peaty sediments in coastal wetlands play an important role in the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide and its belowground storage. Sediment cores are used to quantify organic matter (OM) density, estimated by multiplying the bulk density of a core segment by its OM fraction. This method can be imprecise, as repeated samples often differ widely. Recent studies have shown that sediment bulk density and OM fraction are not independent but tightly related by a function called the ideal-mixing model. Thus, the bulk density of the sediment can be directly estimated from its OM fraction. Statistical theory and simulations demonstrate that the high variance in the product estimation of OM density is the result of error propagation in the product of two functionally related variables with independent errors. Estimating OM density in wetland sediments using the ideal-mixing model is more precise than the traditionally used product estimate, especially in highly organic sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global research on the geological particularities of coal‐accumulating environments and the enrichment patterns of coalbed methane (CBM) is still relatively weak. This paper studies the geological characteristics and coal accumulation patterns of Carboniferous‐Permian coal‐bearing seams in the southern Qinshui Basin. The results show that the coal‐bearing strata in the basin represent the offshore marine and continental intercalated coal seam sediments developed. The southern part of the basin is dominated by lacustrine facies, and the delta front sub‐facies is locally developed. The characteristics of coal accumulation environment in the southern Qinshui Basin are characterized by basement properties, fault networks and coal‐bearing sedimentary facies, which collectively control the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the coal‐rich belt. The differences in coal accumulation environment in the southern basin affect the tectonic evolution, the thickness of the coal seam roof and floor and the hydrogeological conditions of the coal‐rich area, which further control the CBM enrichment in the Taiyuan‐Shanxi Formation. The aim of this study is to explore the factors of CBM enrichment and gas control mode, so as to enrich and improve the theory and method of CBM exploration, which will also help identify the appropriate underground geological structure environment for carbon sequestration (CCS), reduce greenhouse gas emissions and effectively respond to the challenge of global warming. This review comprehensively evaluates the integration of solar-powered electrolytic hydrogen (H 2) production and captured carbon dioxide (CO 2) management for clean fuel production, considering all potential steps from H 2 production methods to CO 2 capture and separation processes. It is expected that the near future will cover CO 2 -capturing technologies integrated with solar-based H 2 production at a commercially viable level, and over 5 billion tons of CO 2 are expected to be utilized potentially for clean fuel production worldwide in 2050 to achieve carbon-neutral levels. The H 2 production out of hydrocarbon-based processes using fossil fuels emits greenhouse gas emissions of 17-38 kg CO 2 /kg H 2. On the other hand,. renewable energy based green hydrogen production emits less than 2 kg CO 2 /kg H 2 which makes it really clean and appealing for implementation. In addition, capturing CO2 and using for synthesizing alternative fuels with green hydrogen will help generate clean fuels for smart cities. In this regard, the most sustainable and promising CO 2 capturing method is post-combustion with an adsorption-separation-desorption processes using monoethanolamine adsorbent with high CO 2 removal efficiencies from flue gases. Consequently, this review article provides perspectives on the potential of integrating CO 2 -capturing technologies and renewable energy-based H 2 production systems for clean production to create sustainable cities and communities. Hydrogen is a promising solution for the decarbonisation of several hard-to-abate end uses, which are mainly in the industrial and transport sectors. The development of an extensive hydrogen delivery infrastructure is essential to effectively activate and deploy a hydrogen economy, connecting production, storage, and demand. This work adopts a mixed-integer linear programming model to study the cost-optimal design of a future hydrogen infrastructure in presence of cross-sectoral hydrogen uses, taking into account spatial and temporal variations, multiple production technologies, and optimised multi-mode transport and storage. The model is applied to a case study in the region of Sicily in Italy, aiming to assess the infrastructural needs to supply the regional demand from transport and industrial sectors and to transfer hydrogen imported from North Africa towards Europe, thus accounting for the region's role as transit point. The analysis integrates multiple production technologies (electrolysis supplied by wind and solar energy, steam reforming with carbon capture) and transport options (compressed hydrogen trucks, liquid hydrogen trucks, pipelines). Results show that the average cost of hydrogen delivered to demand points decreases from 3.75 €/kg H2 to 3.49 €/kg H2 when shifting from mobility-only to cross-sectoral end uses, indicating that the integrated supply chain exploits more efficiently the infrastructural investments. Although pipeline transport emerges as the dominant modality, delivery via compressed hydrogen trucks and liquid hydrogen trucks remains relevant even in scenarios characterised by large hydrogen flows as resulting from cross-sectoral demand, demonstrating that the system competitiveness is maximised through multi-mode integration. Climate and land‐use change pose unprecedented threats to ecosystems, economies, and communities worldwide. To help mitigate the climate crisis, restoration is a rapidly growing industry used to offset carbon emissions. The most common approach is to plant fast‐growing monocultures with the aim of sequestering as much carbon as possible in the shortest time. However, there has been little economic analysis of planting options that explicitly address short and long‐term ecological risks such as fire, disease, and environmental change. Here we develop a method for quantifying ecological risks from fire to sequestration investments and show how these risks can be factored into an analysis of long‐term financial returns relative to opportunity costs. In the case study presented, we find that the apparent advantage of fast‐growing monoculture plantations is likely to be outweighed by the long‐term fire risks to the carbon stored in them. Our analytical framework provides a widely applicable approach to comparing planting options against each other and other land uses, considering key uncertainties. With climate change already manifesting through extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and shifting wildlife populations, our framework can be used to make informed decisions about the best solutions to increase carbon sequestration, reduce ecological risks, and reduce climate impacts with greater certainty. Against the backdrop of urbanization and its environmental impacts, this study expands urban metabolism research by integrating knowledge from the ecosystem service (ES) concept. A framework was put forward to capitalize on ES knowledge in metabolic studies and material flow analysis in particular while supporting dynamic analysis of ES supply and demand flows through factors such as pressure, state, and drivers. This framework is tested in the city of Lima, Peru, to evaluate six ESs and express their contribution in a standard economy‐wide material flow analysis of the city. Moreover, simulations were deployed to forecast spatiotemporal variations of resource flows and emissions until the year 2050. Findings indicate a gap between the city's ES demand and the availability of its local natural resources. Demand exceeds local supply ES flows in Lima, with the exception of surface water provision and cane‐mats for construction materials, representing 141% and 128% of the total supply, respectively. However, they are projected to reduce by the year 2050: 19% and 22% respectively. Carbon sequestration supply represents 0.01% of the total demand (carbon emissions). Peri‐urban agriculture production represents 4.3% of the total food consumption. Our findings offer a new perspective on the role of nature in cities and highlight the need to implement urban sustainability policies that can help overcome metabolic deficiencies while prioritizing resource efficiency, decarbonization, and conservation/generation of green infrastructure in the city. Carbon dioxide is a key gas to monitor at volcanoes because its concentration and isotopic signature can indicate changes to magma supply and degassing behavior prior to eruptions, yet carbon isotopic fluctuations at volcanic summits are not well constrained. Here we present δ13C results measured from plume samples collected at Stromboli volcano, Italy, by Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). We found contrasting volcanic δ13C signatures in 2018 during quiescence (−0.36 ± 0.59‰) versus 10 days before the 3 July 2019 paroxysm (−5.01 ± 0.56‰). Prior to the eruption, an influx of CO2‐rich magma began degassing at deep levels (∼100 MPa) in an open‐system fashion, causing strong isotopic fractionation and maintaining high CO2/St ratios in the gas. This influx occurred between 10 days and several months prior to the event, meaning that isotopic changes in the gas could be detected weeks to months before unrest. Plain Language Summary: Volcanoes produce gases which change composition depending on how active the volcano is. One of these gases, carbon dioxide, is known to change in proportion to other gases before an eruption occurs, but little is known about how the isotopes of carbon change leading up to an eruption. Using drones to reach the gaseous plume of Stromboli volcano, Italy, we have captured carbon dioxide both during an inactive phase in 2018 and during the lead‐up to a highly explosive eruption called a paroxysm in 2019. There is a stark difference in the carbon isotopes measured 10 days before the 3 July 2019 paroxysm as opposed to those measured in 2018. This is caused by the arrival of CO2‐rich magma which progressively degassed, leading to lighter carbon isotopes in the residual magma over time. This process could have started anywhere from 10 days to several months before the paroxysm. This provides a warning signal which can be detected weeks to months before an active period begins. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is considered as a future key technology to provide baseload electricity, heat, pulp, paper, and biofuels, while also enabling atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Sweden seeks to lead the way in bringing this technology up to scale, introducing a EUR 3.6 billion reverse auction scheme to facilitate market entry of companies producing BECCS. We explore instrument design preferences among politicians, regulators, and prospective BECCS operators to identify trade-offs and explore feasible policy design. Based on 35 interviews with experts in the latent BECCS sector in Sweden, we identify under which circumstances prospective operators would be willing to place bids and discuss how actor preferences both align with and challenge auction theory. The analysis concludes that at least four dilemmas need attention. These concerns how to: (1) balance the state's demand for BECCS to be implemented already in 2030 against the prospective BECCS operators' fear of the winner's curse, i.e., a fear of bidding for a contract that turns out to be too costly to implement; (2) allocate contracts at the margin of the auctioneer's demand for BECCS without driving up costs; (3) design compliance mechanism to achieve effectiveness without undermining efficiency, and; 4) integrate the auction with the voluntary carbon market—if at all—in a manner that safeguards the environmental integrity of the auctions. Direct air capture (DAC) is a sustainable technology to alleviate the greenhouse effect and a reliable pathway to acquire inexhaustible CO2 for the production of costly chemicals and energy products. Current DAC technologies with amine‐related sorbents rely on chemisorption, while they consume intensive energy for CO2 release and sorbent regeneration by heating. Developing new DAC processes with weak, reversible adsorption can substantially reduce the regeneration energies. Herein, the design of CO2 breathing paper (CBP) is demonstrated toward spontaneous CO2 extraction from ambient air and solar‐driven regeneration. The CBP is fabricated by coupling 2‐ethyl‐4‐methylimidazole to carbon nanotube paper on the basis of density functional theory calculations. At ambient conditions, CBP spontaneously captures atmospheric CO2 with a capacity of 0.14–1.75 mmol g–1 at 0–35 °C through non‐covalent electrostatic interaction. Upon exposure to sunlight, all adsorbed CO2 can be released and converted to concentrated gas for storage. Attractively, the efficiency of solar‐driven CO2 release is much higher than the traditional temperature‐swing method owing to the IR sensitivity of CO2. Besides the reversibility, the mild conditions also ensure the durability of CBP. These findings suggest that the CBP is a promising candidate for cost‐effective DAC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research developed a novel composite of MOF-NH2 and graphene oxide (GO) for enhanced CO2 capture. Employing the response surface methodology-central composite design (RSM-CCD) for experiments design, various MOF-NH2/GO samples with GO loadings from 0 to 30 wt% were synthesized. The results of SEM, XRD, EDS, and BET analysis revealed that the materials maintained their MOF crystal structure, confirmed by X-ray diffraction, and exhibited unique texture, high porosity, and oxygen-enriched surface chemistry. The influence of temperature (25–65 °C) and pressure (1–9 bar) on CO2 adsorption capacity was assessed using a volumetric adsorption system. Optimum conditions were obtained at weight percent of 22.6 wt% GO, temperature of 25 °C, and pressure of 9 bar with maximum adsorption capacity of 303.61 mg/g. The incorporation of amino groups enhanced the CO2 adsorption capacity. Isotherm and kinetic analyses indicated that Freundlich and Fractional-order models best described CO2 adsorption behavior. Thermodynamic analysis showed the process was exothermic, spontaneous, and physical, with enthalpy changes of − 16.905 kJ/mol, entropy changes of − 0.030 kJ/mol K, and Gibs changes energy of − 7.904 kJ/mol. Mass transfer diffusion coefficients increased with higher GO loadings. Regenerability tests demonstrated high performance and resilience, with only a 5.79% decrease in efficiency after fifteen cycles. The massive emission of carbon dioxide produces the greenhouse effect and poses a threat to the survival of modern civilization. The search for new carbon management strategies has been at the forefront of scientific research over the past few decades. Integrated carbon dioxide capture and utilization (ICCU), which aims to capture CO2 and convert it in situ into high value‐added products or fuels, is considered to be more attractive and innovative than alternative strategies. This paper introduces the adsorption capacity and characteristics of solid sorbents at different operating temperatures. On this basis, the recent research on ICCU technology combined with methanation, reverse water−gas shift reaction, dry reforming of alkanes and dehydrogenation of alkanes over novel dual‐function materials is presented, and the development direction and future prospects of ICCU are discussed. Commercial scale decarbonization through carbon capture and storage may likely involve many CO2 storage projects located in close proximity. The close proximity could raise concerns over caprock integrity associated with reservoir pressure buildup and interference among adjacent projects. Commercial-scale injection will also require large prospective CO2 storage resource and high injectivity in the targeted storage formations. To accommodate the need for both large resource and high injectivity, project operators could consider injecting CO2 into a stacked sequence of formations. This analysis investigates the benefits of injecting CO2 into a vertically stacked sequence of saline formations, over injecting the same amount of CO2 into a single saline formation, in addressing these challenges. Our analysis shows that injecting into the stacked sequence mitigates the extent of pressure buildup among the stacked formations, while still achieving the same or greater target CO2 storage volumes. Among cases modeled, the resulting pressure buildup front is most reduced when each storage site distributes injection volumes over several wells, each of which injects a portion of the total CO2 mass across the stacked sequence. This favorable case not only results in the smallest CO2 aerial footprint, but also shows the largest reduction in the pressure buildup at the top of perforation at the injection wells (upwards of approximately 46% compared to the single-formation storage), the result of which is crucial to maintain caprock integrity.
