Abstract

We investigate the emission of single photons from CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods which are optically trapped in the focus of a deep parabolic mirror. Thanks to this mirror, we are able to image almost the full 4$\pi$ emission pattern of nanometer-sized elementary dipoles and verify the alignment of the rods within the optical trap. From the motional dynamics of the emitters in the trap we infer that the single-photon emission occurs from clusters comprising several emitters. We demonstrate the optical trapping of rod-shaped quantum emitters in a configuration suitable for efficiently coupling an ensemble of linear dipoles with the electromagnetic field in free space., Comment: updated version after review, including supplementary material as appendix

Abstract

The blinking dynamics of colloidal core-shell CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods is studied in detail at the single particle level. Analyzing the autocorrelation function of the fluorescence intensity, we demonstrate that these nanoemitters are characterized by a short value of the mean duration of bright periods (ten to a few hundreds of microseconds). The comparison of the results obtained for samples with different geometries shows that not only the shell thickness is crucial but also the shape of the dot- in-rods. Increasing the shell aspect ratio results in shorter bright periods suggesting that surface traps impact the stability of the fluorescence intensity.

We study nonclassical features of multiphoton light emitted by clusters of single-photon emitters. As signatures of nonclassicality, we use violation of inequalities for normalized correlation functions of different orders or the probabilities of multiphoton detection. Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) is a dye hazardous pollutant widely used in several industrial processes that represents a relevant source of water pollution. Thus, the research of new systems to avoid their environmental dispersion represents an important goal. In this work, an efficient and sustainable nanocomposite material based on green gold nanoparticles for MB water remediation was developed. Starting from the reducing and stabilizing properties of some compounds naturally present in Lambrusco winery waste (grape marc) extracts, green gold nanoparticles (GM-AuNPs) were synthesized and deposited on a supporting membrane to create an easy and stable system for water MB decontamination. GM-AuNPs, with a specific plasmonic band at 535 nm, and the modified membrane were first characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the presence of two breeds of crystalline shapes, triangular platelets and round-shaped penta-twinned nanoparticles, respectively. The crystalline nature of GM-AuNPs was also confirmed from XRD analysis. The photocatalytic performance of the modified membrane was evaluated under natural sunlight radiation, obtaining a complete disappearance of MB (100%) in 116 min. The photocatalytic process was described from a pseudo-first-order kinetic with a rate constant (k) equal to 0.044 ± 0.010 min−1. The modified membrane demonstrated high stability since it was reused up to 20 cycles, without any treatment for 3 months, maintaining the same performance. The GM-AuNPs-based membrane was also tested with other water pollutants (methyl orange, 4-nitrophenol, and rhodamine B), revealing a high selectivity towards MB. Finally, the photocatalytic performance of GM-AuNPs-based membrane was also evaluated in real samples by using tap and pond water spiked with MB, obtaining a removal % of 99.6 ± 1.2% and 98.8 ± 1.9%, respectively. Abstract

Optical dipole-traps are used in various scientific fields, including classical optics, quantum optics and biophysics. Here, we propose and implement a dipole-trap for nanoparticles that is based on focusing from the full solid angle with a deep parabolic mirror. The key aspect is the generation of a linear-dipole mode which is predicted to provide a tight trapping potential. We demonstrate the trapping of rod-shaped nanoparticles and validate the trapping frequencies to be on the order of the expected ones. The described realization of an optical trap is applicable for various other kinds of solid-state targets. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of optical dipole-traps which simultaneously provide high trap stiffness and allow for efficient interaction of light and matter in free space., Comment: revised version accepted for publication

Abstract

Personalised medicine and the identification of predictors of the efficacy of specific drugs represent the ultimate goal for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in order to break the current therapeutic ceiling. JAK inhibitors are a new class of advanced therapies, orally administered, showing a good profile of efficacy and safety in both randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and real-world studies. Unfortunately, to date, it is not possible to draw the ideal profile of a patient maximally benefiting from this class of drugs to guide clinicians' therapeutic choices. Baseline clinical activities and inflammatory biomarkers, as well as their early variation after treatment initiation, emerged as the main predictors of efficacy from post hoc analyses of RCTs with tofacitinib. Similar findings were also observed in the real-life studies including mainly patients with a history of pluri-refractoriness to biological therapies. At last, a few new biomarkers have been explored, even though they have not been validated in large cohorts. This paper provides a review of the current knowledge on clinical variables and biomarkers predicting response to JAK inhibitors in UC.

Abstract

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition, involving primarily the bowel, characterized by a typical remitting–relapsing pattern. Despite endoscopy representing the reference standard for the diagnosis and assessment of disease activity, radiological imaging has a key role, providing information about mural and extra-visceral involvement. Methods: Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging are the most frequently used radiological techniques in clinical practice for both the diagnosis and staging of CD involving the small bowel in non-urgent settings. The contribution of imaging in the management of CD is reported on by answering the following practical questions: (1) What is the best technique for the assessment of small bowel CD? (2) Is imaging a good option to assess colonic disease? (3) Which disease pattern is present: inflammatory, fibrotic or fistulizing? (4) Is it possible to identify the presence of strictures and to discriminate inflammatory from fibrotic ones? (5) How does imaging help in defining disease extension and localization? (6) Can imaging assess disease activity? (7) Is it possible to evaluate post-operative recurrence? Results: Imaging is suitable for assessing disease activity, extension and characterizing disease patterns. CT and MRI can both answer the abovementioned questions, but MRI has a greater sensitivity and specificity for assessing disease activity and does not use ionizing radiation. Conclusions: Radiologists are essential healthcare professionals to be involved in multidisciplinary teams for the management of CD patients to obtain the necessary answers for clinically relevant questions. Abstract

The aim of this systematic review is to report the normal cortical development of different fetal cerebral fissures on ultrasound, describe associated anomalies in fetuses with cortical malformations, and evaluate the quality of published charts of cortical fissures. The inclusion criteria were studies reporting development, anomalies, and reference charts of fetal cortical structures on ultrasound. The outcomes observed were the timing of the appearance of different cortical fissures according to different gestational age windows, associated central nervous system (CNS) and extra-CNS anomalies detected at ultrasound in fetuses with cortical malformation, and rate of fetuses with isolated anomaly. Furthermore, we performed a critical evaluation of the published reference charts for cortical development on ultrasound. Random-effect meta-analyses of proportions were used to combine the data. Twenty-seven studies (6875 fetuses) were included. Sylvian fissure was visualized on ultrasound in 97.69% (95% CI 92.0–100) of cases at 18–19, 98.17% (95% CI 94.8–99.8) at 20–21, 98.94% (95% CI 97.0–99.9) at 22–23, and in all cases from 24 weeks of gestation. Parieto-occipital fissure was visualized in 81.56% (95% CI 48.4–99.3) of cases at 18–19, 96.59% (95% CI 83.2–99.8) at 20–21, 96.85% (95% CI 88.8–100) at 22–23, and in all cases from 24 weeks of gestation, while the corresponding figures for calcarine fissure were 37.27% (95% CI 0.5–89.6), 80.42% (95% CI 50.2–98.2), 89.18% (95% CI 74.0–98.2), and 96.02% (95% CI 96.9–100). Malformations of cortical development were diagnosed as an isolated finding at ultrasound in 6.21% (95% CI 2.9–10.9) of cases, while they were associated with additional CNS anomalies in 93.79% (95% CI 89.1–97.2) of cases. These findings highlight the need for large studies specifically looking at the timing of the appearance of the different brain sulci. Standardized algorithms for prenatal assessment of fetuses at high risk of malformations of cortical development are also warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We prove experimentally, upon polarization analysis performed on a large statistic of single nanoemitters, that high quality core/shell CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods behave as linear dipoles. Moreover, the dipole in-plane and out-of-plane orientations could be assessed. We demonstrate in particular that, contrary to expectations, the emitting dipole is not aligned with the elongated axis of the dot-in-rod. Besides, the polarimetric measurements prove that the excitation transition cannot be approximated by a single linear dipole, contrary to the emission transition. Finally, we highlight that non-radiative channels of charge carrier recombination do not affect the dipolar nature of the radiative transitions.

We deposit droplets of nanorods dispersed in solvents on substrate surfaces and let the solvent evaporate. We find that strong contact line pinning leads to dense nanorod deposition inside coffee stain fringes, where we observe large-scale lateral ordering of the nanorods with the long axis of the rods oriented parallel to the contact line. Abstract

To investigate the role of fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting associated anomalies in fetuses with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and normal neurosonography.This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort study of patients examined between 2012 and 2021 in 11 referral fetal medicine centers in Italy. Inclusion criteria were fetuses with congenital CMV infection diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction analysis of amniotic fluid, pregnancies that underwent detailed multiplanar ultrasound assessment of the fetal brain as recommended by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, maternal age ≥ 18 years, normal fetal karyotype and MRI performed within 3 weeks after the last ultrasound examination. The primary outcome was the rate of central nervous system (CNS) anomalies detected exclusively on MRI and confirmed after birth or autopsy in fetuses with a prenatal diagnosis of congenital CMV infection and normal neurosonography at diagnosis. Additional CNS anomalies were classified into anomalies of the ventricular and the periventricular zone, intracranial calcifications in the basal ganglia or germinal matrix, destructive encephalopathy in the white matter, malformations of cortical development, midline anomalies, posterior fossa anomalies and complex brain anomalies. We evaluated the relationship between the incidence of structural CNS malformations diagnosed exclusively on fetal MRI and a number of maternal and gestational characteristics. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify and adjust for potential independent predictors of the MRI diagnosis of fetal anomalies.The analysis included 95 fetuses with a prenatal diagnosis of congenital CMV infection and normal neurosonography referred for prenatal MRI. The rate of structural anomalies detected exclusively at fetal MRI was 10.5% (10/95). When considering the type of anomaly, malformations of cortical development were detected on MRI in 40.0% (4/10) of fetuses, destructive encephalopathy in 20.0% (2/10), intracranial calcifications in the germinal matrix in 10.0% (1/10) and complex CNS anomalies in 30.0% (3/10). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, only CMV viral load in the amniotic fluid, expressed as a continuous variable (odds ratio (OR), 1.16 (95% CI, 1.02-1.21); P = 0.02) or categorical variable ( 100 000 copies/mL) (OR, 12.0 (95% CI, 1.2-124.7); P = 0.04), was independently associated with the likelihood of detecting fetal anomalies on MRI. Associated anomalies were detected exclusively at birth and missed by both prenatal neurosonography and fetal MRI in 3.8% (3/80) of fetuses with congenital CMV infection.Fetal brain MRI can detect additional anomalies in a significant proportion of fetuses with congenital CMV infection and negative neurosonography. Viral load in the amniotic fluid was an independent predictor of the risk of associated anomalies in these fetuses. The findings of this study support a longitudinal evaluation using fetal MRI in congenital CMV infection, even in cases with negative neurosonography at diagnosis. © 2022 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
