The analogy between electromagnetism and gravitation was achieved by linearizing the tensorial gravitational equations of general relativity and converting them into a vector form corresponding to Maxwell's electromagnetic equations. On this basis, we use the equivalence with viscoelasticity (SH waves) and propose a theory of gravitational waves. We add a damping term to the differential equations, which is equivalent to Ohm's law in electromagnetism and Maxwell's viscosity in viscoelasticity, to describe the attenuation of the waves. A plane-wave analysis gives the phase velocity, the energy velocity, the quality factor and the attenuation factor of the field as well as the energy balance. To obtain these properties, we use the analogy with viscoelasticity; the properties of electromagnetic and gravitational waves are similar to those of shear waves. The presence of attenuation means that the transient field is generally a composition of inhomogeneous (non-uniform) plane waves, where the propagation and attenuation vectors do not point in the same direction and the phase velocity vector and the energy flux (energy velocity) are not collinear. The polarization of cross-plane field is linear and perpendicular to the propagation-attenuation plane, while the polarization of the field within the plane is elliptical. Transient wave fields in the space-time domain are analyzed with the Green function (in homogeneous media) and with a grid method (in heterogeneous media) based on the Fourier method for calculating the spatial derivatives and a Runge-Kutta scheme of order 4 for the time stepping. In the examples, wave propagation at the Sun-Earth and Earth-Moon distances using quadrupole sources is considered in comparison to viscoelastic waves. We analyze the management of the Italian pandemic during the five identified waves. We considered the following problems: (i) The composition of the CTS ("Scientific Technical Committee"), which was composed entirely of doctors, mainly virologists, without mathematical epidemiologists, statisticians, physicists, etc. In fact, a pandemic has a behavior described by mathematical, stochastic and probabilistic criteria; (ii) Political interference in security measures and media propaganda; (iii) The initial stages of the vaccination campaign, ignoring the age factor, and (iv) The persistence of the pandemic due to the population unvaccinated (anti-vax or "no-vax"), which amounts to about six to seven million people, including 10% of anti-vax doctors.

We simulate the effects of diagenesis, cementation and compaction on the elastic properties of shales and sandstones with four different petro-elastical theories and a basin-evolution model, based on constant heating and sedimentation rates. We consider shales composed of clay minerals, mainly smectite and illite, depending on the burial depth, and the pore space is assumed to be saturated with water at hydrostatic conditions. Diagenesis in shale (smectite/illite transformation here) as a function of depth is described by a 5th-order kinetic equation, based on an Arrhenius reaction rate. On the other hand, quartz cementation in sandstones is based on a model that estimates the volume of precipitated quartz cement and the resulting porosity loss from the temperature history, using an equation relating the precipitation rate to temperature. Effective pressure effects (additional compaction) are accounted for by using Athy equation and the Hertz-Mindlin model. The petro-elastic models yield similar seismic velocities, despite the different level of complexity and physics approaches, with increasing density and seismic velocities as a function of depth. The methodology provides a simple procedure to obtain the velocity of shales and sandstones versus temperature and pressure due to the diagenesis-cementation-compaction process.

A pandemic caused by a new coronavirus has spread worldwide, affecting Argentina. We implement an SEIR model to analyze the disease evolution in Buenos Aires and neighbouring cities. The model parameters are calibrated using the number of casualties officially reported. Since infinite solutions honour the data, we show different cases. In all of them the reproduction ratio $R_0$ decreases after early lockdown, but then raises, probably due to an increase in contagion in highly populated slums. Therefore it is mandatory to reverse this growing trend in $R_0$ by applying control strategies to avoid a high number of infectious and dead individuals. An epidemic disease caused by a new coronavirus has spread in Northern Italy with a strong contagion rate. We implement an SEIR model to compute the infected population and number of casualties of this epidemic. The example may ideally regard the situation in the Italian Region of Lombardy, where the epidemic started on February 25. We calibrate the model with the number of dead individuals to date (May 5, 2020) and constraint the parameters on the basis of values reported in the literature. The peak occurs at day 37 (March 31) approximately, when there is a rapid decrease, with a reproduction ratio R0 = 3 initially, 1.36 at day 22 and 0.8 after day 35, indicating different degrees of lockdown. The predicted death toll is approximately 15600 casualties, with 2.7 million infected individuals at the end of the epidemic. The incubation period providing a better fit of the dead individuals is 4.25 days and the infection period is 4 days, with a fatality rate of 0.00144/day [values based on the reported (official) number of casualties]. The infection fatality rate (IFR) is 0.57 %, and 2.36 % if twice the reported number of casualties is assumed. However, these rates depend on the initially exposed individuals. If approximately nine times more individuals are exposed, there are three times more infected people at the end of the epidemic and IFR = 0.47 %. If we relax these constraints and use a wider range of lower and upper bounds for the incubation and infection periods, we observe that a higher incubation period (13 versus 4.25 days) gives the same IFR (0.6 versus 0.57 %), but nine times more exposed individuals in the first case. Therefore, a precise determination of the fatality rate is subject to the knowledge of the characteristics of the epidemic.
