1. Testing SUSY models of lepton flavor violation at a photon collider

Abstract

The loop level lepton flavor violating signals $\gamma \gamma \to \ell \ell' (\ell=e,\mu,\tau, \ell \neq \ell^\prime)$ are studied in a scenario of low-energy, R-parity conserving, supersymmetric seesaw mechanism within the context of a high energy photon collider. Lepton flavor violation is due to off diagonal elements in the left s-lepton mass matrix induced by renormalization group equations. The average slepton masses ${\widetilde{m}}$ and the off diagonal matrix elements $\Delta m$ are treated as model independent free phenomenological parameters in order to discover regions in the parameter space where the signal cross section may be observable. At the energies of the $\gamma \gamma$ option of the future high-energy linear collider the signal has a potentially large standard model background, and therefore particular attention is paid to the study of kinematical cuts in order to reduce the latter at an acceptable level. We find, for the ($e\tau$) channel, non-negligible fractions of the parameter space ($\delta_{LL}=\Delta m^2/\widetilde{m}^2 \gtrsim 10^{-1}$) where the statistical significance ($SS$) is $SS \gtrsim 3$., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, Revtex4

Abstract

We consider inelastic QED processes, the cross sections of which do not drop with increasing energy. Such reactions have the form of two-jet processes with the exchange of a virtual photon in the t-channel. We consider them in the region of small scattering angles m/E <= theta << 1, which yield the dominant contribution to their cross sections. A new effective method is presented to calculate the corresponding helicity amplitudes. Its basic idea consists in replacing spinor structures for real and weakly virtual intermediate leptons by simple transition vertices for real leptons. Abstract

As continuation of our previous paper we further develop our new method for calculating helicity amplitudes of jet-like QED processes described by tree diagrams, applying it to lepton pair production. This method consists in replacing spinor structures for real and weakly virtual intermediate leptons by simple transition vertices. New vertices are introduced for the pair production case, and previous bremsstrahlung vertices are generalized to include virtual photons inside the considered jet. We present a diagrammatic approach that allows to write down in an efficient way the leading helicity amplitudes, at tree level. The obtained compact amplitudes are particularly suitable for numerical calculations in jet-like kinematics. Abstract

Such reactions have the form of two-jet processes with the exchange of a virtual photon in the t-channel. We consider them in the region of small scattering angles $m/E \lesssim \theta \ll 1$, which yields the dominant contribution to their total cross sections. A new effective method is presented and applied to QED processes with emission of real photons to calculate the helicity amplitudes of these processes. Its basic idea is similar to the well-known equivalent-lepton method. Compact analytical expressions for those amplitudes up to $e^8$ are derived omitting only terms of the order of $m^2/E^2, \theta^2$, $\theta m/E$ and higher order. The helicity amplitudes are presented in a compact form in which large compensating terms are already cancelled. 6. Signal of heavy Majorana neutrinos at hadron colliders

Abstract

The lepton number violating signal of like-sign-dileptons (LSD), p p \to \ell^\pm\ell^\pm + 2 jets, is investigated within a model of mixing in the neutrino sector assuming the existence of heavy Majorana neutrino states with a left--handed coupling to the light leptons. The LSD signal receives contributions both from the resonant production of a heavy Majorana neutrino (N) and from the exchange of a virtual N in the WW fusion mechanisms. These two possibilities are discussed in detail and compared. Helicity amplitudes are given pointing out differences with calculations previously reported by other authors. The signal cross--sections are computed at the energy of the LHC collider (sqrt{S}=14 TeV) at CERN and within the existing experimental limits on the mixing couplings, including those coming from neutrinoless double beta decay. Abstract

This paper deals with the production of orthodimuonium (OM) ($\mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ atom in triplet state) in collisions of high-energy electrons with nuclei or atoms. This reaction was previously studied by Holvik and Olsen [Phys. Rev. D 35, 2124 (1987)] on the basis of a bremsstrahlung mechanism where OM is produced by only one virtual photon. In the present paper we consider a competing three-photon mechanism where the production of OM results from the collision of a photon generated by the electron with two photons emitted by the nucleus. We derive the corresponding spectrum and production rate of OM and show that the three-photon mechanism is the dominant one for heavy atom target., Comment: Revtex style, 10 pages, 5 postscript figures

9. Production of Like Sign Di-Leptons in p-p Collisions Through Composite Majorana Neutrinos

Abstract

The production of Like-Sign-Di-leptons (LSD), in the high energy lepton number violating ($\Delta L = +2$) reaction, p p --> 2jets + l+l+ (l=e,\mu,\tau) of interest for the experiments to be performed at the forthcoming Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is investigated in detail, taking up a composite model scenario in which the exchanged virtual composite neutrino is assumed to be a Majorana particle that couples to the light leptons via the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge bosons through a magnetic type coupling ($\sigma_{\mu\nu}$). An helicity projection method is used to evaluate exactly the tree-level amplitudes of the contributing parton subprocesses ($2\to 4$), which allows to take into account all exchange diagrams and occurring interferences. Numerical estimates of the corresponding signal cross-section that implement kinematical cuts needed to suppress the Standard Model background, are presented which show that in some regions of the parameter space the total number of LSD events is well above the background. Assuming non-observation of the LSD signal it is found that LHC would exclude a composite Majorana neutrino up to 850 GeV (if one requires 10 events for discovery). The sensitivity of LHC experiments to the parameter space is then compared to that of the next generation of neutrinoless double beta decay ($\beta\beta_{0\nu}$) experiment, GENIUS, and it is shown that they will provide constraints of the same order of magnitude and will play a complementary role., Comment: Revtex style, 31 pages, 8 postscript figures. We present predictions for the exclusive photoproduction of $\Phi$-meson on Proton at large tranfer, where we use a quark-diquark structure model for the proton. Extrapolation from our results to lower tranfers is comparable in magnitude with available data in that range. This may support the diquark model in its ability to provide, for that process, an appropriate link between diffractive physics at low transfer and the standard semi-perturbative approach of hard exclusive processes at very large tranfer, where the proton recovers its three-quark structure., Comment: 24 pages, RevTex, 3 Figures.ps

Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei are considered as sources of neutrinos, with neutrino energies extending up to 10^{18} eV. It is expected that these highly energetic cosmic neutrinos will be detected by the neutrino telescopes, presently under construction. The detection process is very sensitive to the total muon neutrino cross-section. We examine how the total cross section changes at high energies, by the single production of excited fermions (excited muon and muon-neutrino). 12. Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with Composite Neutrinos

Abstract

We study in detail the contribution of heavy composite Majorana neutrinos to neutrino-less double beta decay. Our analysis confirms the result of a previous estimate by two of the authors. Excited neutrinos couple to the electroweak gauge bosons through a magnetic type effective Lagrangian. The relevant nuclear matrix element is related to matrix elements available in the literature and current bounds on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay are converted into bounds on the compositeness scale and/or the heavy neutrino mass. Using the general helicity formula for $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ collisions, we are showing that it should be possible to determine a number of independent ``structure functions'', i.e. linear combinations of elements of the two-photon helicity tensor, through azimuthal correlations in two-body or quasi two-body reactions induced by the photon-photon interaction, provided certain experimental conditions are satisfied. Abstract

Inclusive J/ψ production in photon-photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction γγ → J/ψ + X is seen. The number of observed N(J/ψ → μ+μ-) events is 36 ± 7 for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb-1, yielding a cross-section of σ(J/ψ + X) = 45 ± 9(stat) ± 17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of γγprocesses in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74 ± 22)% of the observed J/ψ events are due to 'resolved' photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Neutral Higgs bosons of the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) were searched for in the data collected in 1999 by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 191.6 and 201.7 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 228 pb(-1). These analyses, in combination with our results at lower energies, set 95% confidence level lower mass bounds on the Standard Model Higgs boson (107.3 GeV/c(2)) and on the lightest neutral scalar (85.9 GeV/c(2)) and neutral pseudoscalar (86.5 GeV/c(2)) Higgs bosons in representative scans of the MSSM parameter space. An extended scan of the MSSM parameter space was also performed to test the robustness of these limits.

Abstract

Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202 GeV. A phenomenological analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, alpha_s is extracted from the mean values and shapes. In an alternative approach, renormalisation group invariance (RGI) is used as an explicit constraint, leading to a consistent description of mean values without the need for sizeable power corrections. The QCD beta-function is precisely measured using this approach. From the DELPHI data on Thrust, including data from low energy experiments, one finds beta_0 = 7.86 +/- 0.32 for the one loop coefficient of the beta-function or, assuming QCD, n_f = 4.75 +/- 0.44 for the number of active flavours. These values agree well with the QCD expectation of beta_0=7.67 and n_f=5. A direct measurement of the full logarithmic energy slope excludes light gluinos with a mass below 5 GeV., Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures, Accepted by Eur. Phys. J. C

Abstract

Searches for resonant ~nu production in e+e collisions under the assumption that R-parity is not conserved and that the dominant R-parity violating coupling is lambda121 or lambda131 used data recorded by DELPHI in 1997 to 2000 at centre-of-mass energies of 183 to 208 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model was obs erved. Upper limits are given for the lambda121 and lamdba131 couplings as a function of the sneutrino mass and total width. The limits are especially stringent for sneutrino masses equal to the centre-of-mass energies with the highest integrated luminosities recorded. Abstract

Inclusive J/ψ production in photon-photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction γγ → J/ψ + X is seen. The number of observed N(J/ψ → μ+μ-) events is 36 ± 7 for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb-1, yielding a cross-section of σ(J/ψ + X) = 45 ± 9(stat) ± 17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of γγprocesses in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74 ± 22)% of the observed J/ψ events are due to 'resolved' photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Observation is made of rapidity-alignment of K +K - and pp pairs which results from their asymmetric orientation in rapidity, with respect to the direction from primary quark to antiquark. The K +K - and pp data are consistent with predictions from the fragmentation string model. However, the pp data strongly disagree with the conventional implementation of the cluster model. The non-perturbative process of 'gluon splitting to diquarks' has to be incorporated into the cluster model for it to agree with the data. Local conservation of p T between particles nearby in rapidity (i.e., p T compensation) is analysed with respect to the thrust direction for π +π -, K +K -, and pp pairs. In this case, the string model provides fair agreement with the data. The cluster model is incompatible with the data for all three particle pairs. The model with its central premiss of isotropically-decaying clusters predicts a PT correlation not seen in the data. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons was performed in the high energy data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP II at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 202 GeV. The three different final states, τvτv, cs̄c̄s and cs̄τv were considered. New methods were applied to reject wrong hadronic jet pairings and for the tau identification, where a discriminator based on tau polarisation and polar angles was used. No excess of data compared to the expected Standard Model processes was observed and the existence of a charged Higgs boson with mass lower than 71.5 GeV/c2 is excluded at the 95% confidence level. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Technicolor represents a viable alternative to the Higgs mechanism for generating gauge boson masses. Searches for technicolor particles ρT and πT have been performed in the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP at ceritre-of-mass energies between 192 and 208 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 452 pb-1. Good agreement is observed with the SM expectation in all channels studied. This is translated into an excluded region in the (MπT, MρT) plane. The ρT production is excluded for all 90 < MρT < 206.7 GeV/c2. Assuming a point-like interaction of the πT with gauge bosons, an absolute lower limit on the charged πT mass at 95% CL is set at 79.8 GeV/c2, independently of other parameters of the technicolor model.

This reaction was previously studied by Holvik and Olsen [Phys. Rev. D 35, 2124 (1987)] on the basis of a bremsstrahlung mechanism where OM is produced by only one virtual photon. In the present paper we consider a competing three-photon mechanism where the production of OM results from the collision of a photon generated by the electron with two photons emitted by the nucleus.
