Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The inclusive 2H(3He,t) reaction has been studied at 2 GeV for energy transfers up to 500 MeV and scattering angles from 0.25 up to 4 degrees. Data are well reproduced by a model based on a coupled-channel approach for describing the NN and N Delta systems. The effect of final state interaction is important in the low energy part of the spectra. In the delta region, the cross-section is very sensitive to the effects of Delta-N interaction and Delta N - NN process. The latter has also a large influence well below the pion threshold. The calculation underestimates the experimental cross-section between the quasi-elastic and the delta peaks; this is possibly due to projectile excitation or purely mesonic exchange currents., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in EPJA

Two-particle correlations have been measured for identified π- from central 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions and fitted radii of about 7 fm in all dimensions have been obtained. A multi-dimensional study of the radii as a function of kT is presented, including a full correction for the resolution effects of the apparatus. The cross term R2out-long of the standard fit in the Longitudinally CoMoving System (LCMS) and the vL parameter of the generalised Yano-Koonin fit are compatible with 0, suggesting that the source undergoes a boost invariant expansion. The shapes of the correlation functions in Qinv and Qspace = √Q2x + Q2y + Q2z have been analyzed in detail. They are not Gaussian but better represented by exponentials. As a consequence fitting Gaussians to these correlation functions may produce different radii depending on the acceptance of the experimental setup used for the measurement.

A pilot series of 10 [[micro]meter] to 15 [[micro]meter] thin silicon detectors has been made for the [Delta]E-E telescopes in the CHICSi detector system. This system will operate at the CELSIUS heavy ion storage ring in Uppsala, Sweden. [Delta]E-E telescopes provide isotope identification and energy determination of fragments from nuclear collisions. The thin detectors are made as p-i-n diodes in thin etched membranes in 280 [[micro]meter] thick silicon wafers. The membranes are made with anisotropic etching using 25 w% tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. The etch speed of this solution is very uniform across a wafer. As a result detectors with uniform thickness can be produced. The etch depth varies with less than [+ or -] 0.3 [[micro]meter] over a wafer and the surface microroughness is in the range from 2 to 4 nm. Each detector has a 10.0 mm x 10.0 mm active area on a 10.2 mm x 10.2 mm membrane surrounded by a 1.1 mm wide supporting frame. The detectors have leakage currents in the active area of approximately 0.5 nA at 20 V. The breakdown voltage of the detectors is above 100 V. Evaluation experiments with telescopes consisting of a thin detector in combination with a thick detector have shown excellent isotope separation capabilities. Mass separation of 6Li and 7Li is clearly observable.

According to national data, older adults view more television than any other age group. However, further research is needed about how older adults respond to programming. In particular, this study focused on the attitudes of older viewers toward pharmaceutical direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA). Prior research has shown DTCA increases consumers’ demand for drugs, but less research has addressed how older consumers perceive such advertising. Researchers surveyed 293 older adults who attended Senior Centers throughout New Orleans about their television viewing and response to direct-to-consumer drug advertising. The sample was predominantly female (96%) and African American (87%) with a mean age of 76 years. The primary motivations selected for viewing television were to watch a favorite show, to be entertained, or learn information; older adults did not often endorse reasons of boredom, escapism, or relaxation. A majority of the sample (62%) perceived commercials as an interruption or annoying, and indicated they were uninfluenced by advertising (74%). When asked about direct-to-consumer advertising, 54 percent disapproved of such advertising, but 50% reported attending to such commercials when aired. Some older adults reported that advertisements on medicines could provide valuable information (46%), but also perceived the ads as confusing (57%) or alarming (61%). After viewing DTCA, older adults most often reported speaking to a doctor (46%) or seeking information (27%) about a drug, but some reported that they decreased (11%), increased (3%) or stopped (3%) taking medicine. The results provide additional information about how direct-to-consumer advertising is perceived by older adults and affects compliance behavior.

Results on transverse mass spectra of neutral pions measured at central rapidity are presented for impact parameter selected 158$\cdot A$ GeV Pb + Pb, and Pb + Nb collisions. The distributions cover the range $0.5 \mathrm{GeV}/c^{2} \le m_{T} - m_{0} \le 4 \mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$. The change of the spectral shape with centrality is studied in detail. In going from peripheral to medium central collisions there is a nuclear enhancement increasing with transverse mass similar to the well known Cronin effect, while for very central collisions this enhancement appears to be weaker than expected., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, revised version accepted for publication in EUR.PHYS.J. The multiplicity of inclusive photons has been measured on an event-by-event basis for 158 AGeV Pb induced reactions on Ni, Nb, and Pb targets. The systematics of the pseudorapidity densities at midrapidity (rho_max) and the width of the pseudorapidity distributions have been studied for varying centralities for these collisions. A power law fit to the photon yield as a function of the number of participating nucleons gives a value of 1.13+-0.03 for the exponent. The mean transverse momentum, , of photons determined from the ratio of the measured electromagnetic transverse energy and photon multiplicity, remains almost constant with increasing rho_max. Results are compared with model predictions., Comment: 16 pages including 4 figures

Charged particles and photons have been measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a common ($\eta$ - $\phi$)-phase space region in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The measured distributions have been analyzed %using the sliding window method in order to quantify the frequency with which phase space regions of varying sizes have either small or large neutral pion fraction. The measured results are compared with VENUS model simulated events and with mixed events. Events with both large and small charged-neutral fluctuations are observed to occur more frequently than expected statistically, as deduced from mixed events, or as predicted by model simulations, with the difference becoming more prominent with decreasing size of the $\Delta\eta$ - $\Delta\phi$ region., Comment: six pages, six figures

Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.4 GeV at midrapidity (2.3 less than or similar to eta(lab)less than or similar to 3.0) over the range 0.7 less than or similar to p(T)less than or similar to 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi(0) spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N(part)less than or similar to 300), the yield of pi(0)'s with p(T)greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N(coll)), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N(part)greater than or similar to 350, the pi(0) yield is suppressed.

Accidental injury resulting from falling is the leading cause of death in the elderly population. In fact, 11 % of the nation's annual injury deaths occur in this age group. A significant number of accidental deaths occur in resident institutions. A short-term risk index was constructed and validated for the purpose of predicting the risk of a fall in an elderly institutionalized population. The risk index was developed from expert insights, using Bayesian inference. A group of experts identified major risk factors that influence the chance of a fall and provided estimates of the impacts of the identified risk factors. Identification of risk factors, elicitation of experts' insights, construction of the subjective risk index, and validation of the index are discussed. Key words: Bayesian inference; risk index; falling; elderly. (Med Decis Making 1990;10:195-200)

Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.4 GeV at mid-rapidity 2.3 < eta_lab < 3.0 over the range 0.7< p_T < 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi0 spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N_part < 300) the yield of pi0's with p_T > 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N_part > 350 the pi0 yield is suppressed., 5 pages, 4 figures

The azimuthal distributions of photons and charged particles with respect to the event plane are investigated as a function of centrality in Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at 158 (.) A GeV/c in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The anisotropy of the azimuthal distributions is characterized using a Fourier analysis. For both the photon and charged particle distributions the first two Fourier coefficients are observed to decrease with increasing centrality. The observed anisotropies of the photon distributions compare well with the expectations from the charged particle measurements for all centralities.

The manuscript has undergone a major revision. The unwanted correlations were enhanced in the random subdivision method used in the earlier version. The present version uses the more established method of division into subevents separated in rapidity to minimise short range correlations. The observed results for charged particles are in agreement with results from the other experiments. The observed anisotropy in photons is explained using flow results of pions and the correlations arising due to the decay of the neutral pions

Two-particle correlations of direct photons were measured in central 208Pb+208Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The invariant interferometric radii were extracted for 100K(T)300 MeV/c and compared to radii extracted from charged pion correlations. The yield of soft direct photons, K(T)300 MeV/c, was extracted from the correlation strength and compared to theoretical calculations.

Results on the study of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in 158A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions are presented for varying centralities. The charged versus neutral particle multiplicity correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal sizes are analyzed by two different methods. Various types of mixed events are constructed to probe fluctuations arising from different sources. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and from mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in both the charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions. However, no correlated charged-neutral fluctuations, a possible signature of formation of disoriented chiral condensates, are observed. An upper limit on the production of disoriented chiral condensates is set.

Several hadronic observables have been studied in central 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions using data measured by the WA98 experiment at CERN: single pi(-) and K- production, as well as two- and three-pion interferometry. The Wiedemann-Heinz hydrodynamical model has been fitted to the pion spectrum, giving an estimate of the temperature and transverse flow velocity. Bose-Einstein correlations between two identified pi(-) have been analyzed as a function of k(T), using two different parametrizations. The results indicate that the source does not have a strictly boost invariant expansion or spend time in a long-lived intermediate phase. A comparison between data and a hydrodynamical based simulation shows very good agreement for the radii parameters as a function of k(T). The pion phase-space density at freeze-out has been measured, and agrees well with the Tomasik-Heinz model. A large pion chemical potential close to the condensation limit of m(pi) seems to be excluded. The three-pion Bose-Einstein interferometry shows a substantial contribution of the genuine three-pion correlation, but not quite as large as expected for a fully chaotic and symmetric source.

Nuclear Physics - Abstract
Results on the study of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produce 158A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions are presented for four different centrality classes. The charged versus neutral particle multiplicity correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal size are analyzed by two different methods. Various types of mixed events are constructed to probe fluctuations arising from different sources. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and from mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of non-statistical fluctuations in both the charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions which decrease with decrease in centrality. However, no correlated charged-neutral fluctuations, a possible signature of formation of disoriented chiral condensates, are observed. An upper limit on the production of disoriented chiral condensates has been set. Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons, and the total transverse energy in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are studied for a wide range of centralities. For narrow centrality bins the multiplicity and transverse energy distributions are found to be near perfect Gaussians. The effect of detector acceptance on the multiplicity fluctuations has been studied and demonstrated to follow statistical considerations. The centrality dependence of the charged particle multiplicity fluctuations in the measured data has been found to agree reasonably well with those obtained from a participant model. However, for photons the multiplicity fluctuations have been found to be lower compared to those obtained from a participant model. The multiplicity and transverse energy fluctuations have also been compared to those obtained from the VENUS event generator.

Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors. Results are also presented on the event-by-event study of correlations between the multiplicity of charged particles and photons to search for DCC-like signals., Comment: Talk presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, France

A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield or upper limit of direct photons as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 < p_T < 4 GeV/c is presented. A significant direct photon excess is observed at p_T > 1.5 GeV/c in central collisions. The results are compared to proton-induced results and to theoretical predictions. Implications for the dynamics of high-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed. A measurement of direct photon production in Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 1.5 GeV/c. The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis;of quark-gluon-plasma formation.

Transverse energy, charged particle pseudorapidity distributions and photon transverse momentum spectra have been studied as a function of the number of participants (N_{part}) and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_{coll}) in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions over a wide impact parameter range. A scaling of the transverse energy pseudorapidity density at midrapidity as N_{part}^{1.08 \pm 0.06} and N_{coll}^{0.83 \pm 0.05} is observed. For the charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity we find a scaling as N_{part}^{1.07 \pm 0.04} and N_{coll}^{0.82 \pm 0.03}. This faster than linear scaling with N_{part} indicates a violation of the naive Wounded Nucleon Model., 13 pages, 16 figures, submitted to European Physical Journal C (revised results for scaling exponents)

The Delta(++)-resonance production in central 158 A GeV Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at the CERN SPS has been studied. The Delta(++) production was estimated from the invariant mass spectrum of p pi(+)-pairs by subtracting a mixed event background. The measured Delta(++) abundance is compared with the results from other experiments at lower energies, and with a model calculation assuming thermal and chemical equilibrium. A measurement of direct photon production in 208Pb + 208Pb collisions at 158 A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 < p_T < 4 GeV/c. A significant direct photon signal, compared to statistical and systematical errors, is seen at p_T > 1.5 GeV/c. The results constitute the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions which could be significant for diagnosis of quark gluon plasma formation.
