A estética do sorriso é ponto chave na odontologia atual e tem sido cada vez mais almejada. Nesse sentido, é necessário que o cirurgião-dentista esteja cada vez mais engajado com os conhecimentos e técnicas necessários para obtenção da estética. O presente estudo teve como objetivo apresentar o manejo de alterações de cor do substrato dental em duas situações clínicas distintas. No primeiro caso clínico, foi restabelecida a estética do dente 21 por meio da instalação de pino de fibra de vidro e confecção de coroa total de dissilicato de lítio. No segundo caso clínico foi realizado um preparo conservador no dente 12 e confeccionada faceta laminada em dissilicato de lítio. Independente dos tipos de preparo realizados no remanescente dental encontrado em cada um dos casos, foi possível manejar a cor escurecida apresentada pelo substrato e dessa forma recuperar a estética e a função em ambos.

Objective: To measure the thickness of five different brands of gingival retraction cords and verify whether there would be a relationship among the sizes and their numbers and a coherent increasing from the thinnest to the largest thickness. Material and Methods: the following cords were evaluated: Gengiret(G), Retraflex(RF), Retractor(RT), Ultrapack(UP), and Pro Retract(PR). Pieces of the cords were placed beside a metallic ruler and photographed standardly regarding to the distance and light. The measurements of the thickness were performed through imaging software (Adobe Photoshop CS6 - Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA, USA). The obtained data were submitted to statistical analysis (one-way ANOVA and post hoc Sheffé test (p = 0.05)). Results: The number and the thickness of the cords mismatched for most of the brands evaluated. Two brands (UP and PR) showed a thickness increasing that mismatched the size increasing between the thinnest and largest cord. Conclusion: The number assigned to the cords by the manufactures did not correspond to a standard thickness, so that the dentist must observe the risk of using cords from different brands during gingival retraction procedures during techniques requiring more than one retraction cord.

Background Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are an occupational health problem that demands a high cost and may also reduce the quality of life and productivity of the dentists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of MSD and its association with self-reported joint damage in dentists from Sao Paulo (Brazil). Methods This was a cross-sectional study performed from two self-administered questionnaires - the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and the other containing demographic and occupational data - in 6072 dentists. Between April and May 2014, 5885 questionnaires were distributed via e-mail through Sao Paulo Regional Board of Dentistry (CRO-SP) and 187 in Congress and public offices. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between explanatory variables (sex, age, level of education, duration of practice in years, number of patients seen per day, previous receipt of information about ergonomics, physical activity, and the presence of joint damage) and MSD. Results Two hundred eighty-six valid questionnaires were returned. The prevalence of MSD was 63.6% (N.=182). Multivariable logistic regression showed that only the factor of self-reported joint damage has a significant association with MSD (OR 0.001; 95% CI: 0.000-0.007). Concerning the self-reported joint damage (60.1%), the carpal tunnel syndrome was the most frequent (13.2%). Conclusions The prevalence of MSD in dentists from Sao Paulo is high, and carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common self-reported joint damage.

This study evaluated the influence of specimen dimensions and storage medium and temperature on the flexural properties of one dental resin composite. The material utilized throughout the study was Clearfil AP-X. Eighty specimens were built with dimensions of either 10×2×2 mm or 25×2×2 mm, stored dry or in distilled water, at 25 or 37oC, for 24 h. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to verify the influence of light curing type on retention force of direct technique and direct-indirect technique. Materials and Methods: Fourth bovine single root teeth with 12mm of length were used in this study. The roots were endodontically treated and randomly divided in four groups according to the light curing unit and technique used: group 1(direct technique, halogen lamp), group 2(direct technique, LED), group 3(direct-indirect technique, halogen lamp), group 4(direct-indirect technique, lamp). The retention force was determined sing a Universal Testing Machine (Instron). All data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test. After the test, the failure was examined and classified according to the fracture place: post/ resin; resin/dentin; mix. Results: Group 3 (246,05N ± 29,51) and 4(241,60N ± 28,95)4 (95,18N) did not show statistically difference but presented higher retention force than group 1 (142,30N ± 25,60) and 2 (178,56N ± 25,67). Most of fracture occurred in interface between dentin/resin. Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that adhesive cementation technique influenced in the retention of glass fiber post.

This in vitro research verified the possibility of eliminating staining caused by coffee and red wine in five composite resins, after being submitted to thermal cycling. Thirty-six specimens were prepared and immersed in water at 37°C for 24 hours. After polishing, specimen color was measured in a spectrophotometer Cintra 10 UV (Visible Spectrometer, GBC, Braeside, VIC, Australia). All specimens were submitted to thermal cycling at temperatures of 5 and 55°C with a dwell time of 1 minute, for 1,000 cycles in a 75% ethanol/water solution. After thermal cycling, the specimens were immersed in water at 37°C until 7 days had elapsed from the time the specimens were prepared. All specimens were then taken to the spectrophotometer for color measurement. The specimens were divided into three groups (N = 12): distilled water (control), coffee, and red wine. For the staining process to occur on only one surface, all the sides, except one, of the surfaces were isolated with white wax. The specimens were immersed in one of the solutions at 37°C for 14 days. The specimens were dried and taken to the spectrophotometer for color measurement. After this, the specimens were submitted to 20 µm wear three times, and the color was measured after each one of the wear procedures. Calculation of the color difference was made using CIEDE2000 formula. According to the methodology used in this research, it was concluded that the staining caused by coffee and red wine was superficial and one wear of 20 µm was sufficient to remove the discoloration.

This study evaluated the fracture strength of teeth restored with bonded ceramic inlays and overlays compared to sound teeth. Thirty sound human maxillary premolars were assigned to 3 groups: 1- sound/unprepared (control); 2- inlays and 3- overlays. The inlay cavity design was Class II MOD preparation with an occlusal width of 1/2 of the intercuspal distance. The overlay cavity design was similar to that of the inlay group, except for buccal and palatal cusp coverage The inlay and overlay groups were restored with feldspathic porcelain bonded with adhesive cement. The specimens were subjected to a compressive load until fracture. Data were analyzed statistically by the Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance level. The fracture strength means (KN) were: Sound/unprepared group = 1.17, Inlay group= 1.17, and Overlay group = 1.14. There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) among the groups. For inlays and overlays, the predominant fracture mode involved fragments of one cusp (70% of simple fractures). The fracture strength of teeth restored with inlay and overlay ceramics with cusp coverage was similar to that of intact teeth. Este estudo avaliou a resistência à fratura de dentes restaurados com inlays e overlays de cerâmicas comparadas a dentes íntegros. Trinta pré-molares humanos íntegros foram divididos em 3 grupos: 1-Dentes sem preparo cavitário (controle), 2-Inlays e 3-Overlays. O preparo para as inlays apresentava uma cavidade de Classe II MOD tendo caixa oclusal com largura de metade da distância intercuspídica. O preparo para as overlays era semelhante ao das inlays; porém com cobertura das cúspides vestibular e palatina. Os grupos 2 e 3 foram restaurados com porcelanas feldspáticas fixadas com cimento resinoso. As amostras foram submetidas à compressão até a fratura. Os valores médios de fratura (KN) foram: grupo 1 = 1,17, grupo 2 = 1,17 e grupo 3 = 1,14. O teste de Kruskal-Wallis não revelou diferença estatisticamente significante entre os 3 grupos (p>0,05). Para as inlays e overlays, a predominância das fraturas envolveu fragmentos de uma das cúspides (70% de fraturas simples). Concluiu-se que os dentes restaurados com inlays e overlays apresentaram resistência da cúspide comparável aos dentes intactos.

The aim of this study was to assess the relation between the surface hardness of seven different commercial brands of resin composites (Charisma, Fill Magic, Master Fill, Natural Look, Opallis, Tetric Ceram, and Z250) and the different degrees of translucence (translucid, enamel and dentin). Vickers microhardness testing revealed significant differences among the groups. Z250 was the commercial brand that showed the best performance in the hardness test. When comparing the three groups assessed within the same brand, only Master Fill and Fill Magic presented statistically significant differences among all of the different translucencies. Natural Look was the only one that showed no significant difference among any of the three groups. Charisma, Opallis, Tetric Ceram and Z250 showed significant differences among some of the tested groups. Based on the results found in this study, it was not possible to establish a relation between translucence and the microhardness of the resin composites assessed. Depending on the material assessed, however, translucence variation did affect the microhardness values of the resin composites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the physical assessment of different light-curing units from 55 dental offices on the irradiance and composite microhardness top/bottom ratio, and the influence of the radiometers for LED or QTH light sources on irradiance measurement. The irradiance of each light-curing unit was evaluated with two radiometers, either for LED or QTH light. A questionnaire regarding the type of source (LED or QTH), time of use, date of last maintenance and light-curing performance assessment applied. The physical assessments were evaluated regarding damage or debris on the light tip. For each light-curing unit, three composite specimens were made (diameter = 7 mm; thickness = 2 mm) with polymerizing time of 20 s, in order to perform the microhardness (Knoop) test. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test (α = 0.01). There was wide variation in irradiance (0-1000 mW/cm(2)). Approximately 50 % of the light-curing units presented radiation lower than 300 mW/cm(2); 10 % of light-curing units, especially those with LED source, presented values higher than 800 mW/cm(2), and 43 % of light-curing units worked with adequate irradiance between 301 and 800 mW/cm(2). In almost 60 % of cases, no maintenance of light-curing units was performed in a period of 3 to 10 years. The age of the light-curing units and the use of inadequate tips interfered negatively in irradiance. The data emphasize the importance of periodic maintenance of light-polymerizing, light-curing units.

This investigation compared, by quantitative analysis, the surface roughness of dental porcelain submitted to three different treatments (glaze, trimming and polishing), utilizing a surface profiling instrument. The parameters Ra (median roughness), Rz (median of the maximum profile heights of five sample lengths), Rpm (median of the maximum profile heights related to the median line of five sample lengths), Pc (peak count per centimeter) and Rpm/Rz (proportional parameter) were evaluated. In addition, the correlation between Ra and the other parameters was analyzed. Based on the results obtained, it was seen that the Ra parameter did not present any correlation with the other parameters in some of the situations evaluated. This demonstrates that complementation of the measurement with other parameters is always necessary, providing a better evaluation of the functional properties of a surface.

Os autores avaliaram cinco diferentes aparelhos fotopolimerizadores, com a intenção de analisar a irradiação por eles emitida. Utilizando-se de um método composto por espectrofotômetro, monocromador e uma óptica adequada, analisaram a transmitância dos filtros, as características da fonte de radiação de luz (lâmpada) e o desempenho das ponteiras. Concluíram que os aparelhos emitem energia na faixa de comprimento de onda adequada, de 350 nm a 530 nm, e que a concentração maior de energia ocorre na faixa de 430 nm a 470 nm.The authors have studied five different visible light-curing devices to verify the irradiance they are able to emit. Using optical instruments like a spectrophotometer and a monochromator, the authors have analyzed the transmittance of the filters, the characteristics of the light radiation source (lamp) and the performance of the ends. They have concluded that the visible light-curing devices analyzed emitted energy in a proper wavelenght, that is, between 350 and 530 nm, with the highest concentration in the range of 430 to 470 nm.

A característica de superfície representa um fator importante na previsibilidade do comportamento dos materiais cerâmicos quanto ao desgaste. A rugosidade superficial de duas cerâmicas (Duceram Plus e Duceragold) foi avaliada através de dois métodos - análise quantitativa e qualitativa - após diferentes tratamentos. Foram confeccionados 36 corpos de prova de prova para a análise ao rugosímetro, e 24 corpos de prova para a análise ao MEV. Os resultados destas análises demonstraram o comportamento distinto entre os diferentes tratamentos. A análise com o rugosímetro demonstrou que a ação dos polidores EDENTA foi a mais efetiva para devolver lisura à superfície após a realização de desgaste com instrumento abrasivo diamantado rotatório. Todas as técnicas de polimento acarretaram em valores de rugosidade menores que os observados nos espécimes que foram submetidos apenas os “glaze". Entre as cerâmicas avaliadas, a Duceragold apresentou valores médios de rugosidade inferiores aos observados na porcelana Duceram Plus na maioria dos tratamentos pesquisados. Pela análise ao MEV não foi possível distinguir diferenças entre as cerâmicas ou entre os corpos de prova polidos ou submetidos apenas ao “glaze". The surface characteristic of ceramic material is an important factor to predict its wear behavior. The surface roughness of two ceramics (Duceram Plus e Duceragold) was evaluated trough qualitative and quantitative methods after different treatments. 36 specimens were fabricated for the analysis utilizing a surface profiling instrument, and 24 for the SEM analysis. The results determined different behavior between the two ceramics evaluated due the treatment executed. The analysis utilizing a surface profiling instrument showed that the treatment using the EDENTA polishers was the most effective technique to provide the smoothest surface after trimming. All polishing techniques resulted in better surface properties when compared to the treatment glaze. The Duceragold ceramic presented lower roughness values in most treatments executed when compared to Duceram Plus. The perception trough the SEM analysis of significant differences between treatments or between the two ceramics was not achievable.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis based on clinical trials that evaluated the main outcomes of glass-ceramic and feldspathic porcelain laminate veneers. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was carried out in Cochrane and PubMed databases. From the selected studies, the survival rates for porcelain and glassceramic veneers were extracted, as were complication rates of clinical outcomes: debonding, fracture/chipping, secondary caries, endodontic problems, severe marginal discoloration, and influence of incisal coverage and enamel/dentin preparation. The Cochran Q test and the I2 statistic were used to evaluate heterogeneity. Results: Out of the 899 articles initially identified, 13 were included for analysis. Metaregression analysis showed that the types of ceramics and follow-up periods had no influence on failure rate. The estimated overall cumulative survival rate was 89% (95% CI: 84% to 94%) in a median follow-up period of 9 years. The estimated survival for glass-ceramic was 94% (95% CI: 87% to 100%), and for feldspathic porcelain veneers, 87% (95% CI: 82% to 93%). The meta-analysis showed rates for the following events: debonding: 2% (95% CI: 1% to 4%); fracture/chipping: 4% (95% CI: 3% to 6%); secondary caries: 1% (95% CI: 0% to 3%); severe marginal discoloration: 2% (95% CI: 1% to 10%); endodontic problems: 2% (95% CI: 1% to 3%); and incisal coverage odds ratio: 1.25 (95% CI: 0.33 to 4.73). It was not possible to perform meta-analysis of the influence of enamel/dentin preparation on failure rates. Conclusion: Glass-ceramic and porcelain laminate veneers have high survival rates. Fracture/ chipping was the most frequent complication, providing evidence that ceramic veneers are a safe treatment option that preserve tooth structure.

Elementos dentais endodonticamente tratados geralmente necessitam de retentores intrarradiculares para prover retenção e suporte ao processo restaurador. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a eficiência na distribuição de tensões de diferentes modelos de retentores intrarradiculares, através do método dos elementos finitos. Um modelo tridimensional de elementos finitos foi desenvolvido para representar um incisivo central superior endodonticamente tratado e restaurado com uma coroa total cerâmica, e quatro tipos diferentes de pinos pré-fabricados (dois convencionais, e dois modelos customizados) foram inseridos sob esse modelo e comparados quanto à distribuição das tensões às quais foram submetidos. Os quatro pinos diferem em formato e material de composição. O primeiro é um pino pré-fabricado metálico customizado referente à uma patente, com porção coronária anatômica (com curvaturas e formatos semelhantes à coroa anatômica) e flange rosqueável. O segundo pino pré-fabricado é semelhante em formato ao primeiro pino, mas será composto por fibra de vidro. O terceiro é um pino metálico pré-fabricado convencional, sem presença de flange. O quarto pino é semelhante ao terceiro pino em formato, mas será composto por fibra de vidro. Foi aplicada sobre os modelos uma mesma força estática média de 100 N com uma angulação de 135 graus ao longo eixo do dente no centro da face palatina do modelo, com o objetivo de simular a carga mastigatória e obter a distribuição das tensões. A avaliação apresentou os resultados considerando os critérios de Von Mises e tensões máximas principais. Os resultados mostraram que os pinos metálicos customizados resultaram em menores tensões à dentina e à estrutura coronária quando comparados aos pinos convencionais, e que ambos os pinos metálicos apresentaram menores tensões à estrutura coronária se comparados aos pinos em fibra de vidro. Em relação à estrutura dentinária, os pinos metálicos e os pinos em fibra de vidro apresentaram resultados semelhantes quanto à distribuição de tensões. Os modelos em fibra de vidro apresentaram resultados semelhantes em ambas as avaliações. Conclui-se que os modelos customizados foram superiores aos convencionais quando compostos pela liga metálica, mas semelhantes quando compostos por fibra de vidro. Endodontically treated teeth commonly require a post to provide retention and support to the restorative process. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of the distribution stresses of different models of posts through the finite element method. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed to represent an endodontically treated maxillary central incisor restored with a ceramic crown, and four different types of prefabricated posts (two conventional and two customized models) have been inserted in that model and compared regarding the distribution of the stresses to which they were subjected. The four posts differ in size and material composition. The first is a custom metal prefabricated post relating to a patent, with anatomical coronal portion (with curvatures and format similar to the anatomical crown) and threaded flange. The second prefabricated post is similar in format to the first post, but is composed of fiberglass. The third is a conventional prefabricated metal post without the flange. The fourth post is similar to the third in format, but is composed of fiberglass. It was applied on the models the same average static occlusal force of 100N with an angle of 135 degrees to the tooth long axis in the palatal surface of the crown, with an objective of simulate the masticatory load and obtain the stress distribution. The evaluation presented the results considering the Von Mises and Maximum principal stress criteria. The results showed that the customized metal posts resulted in lower stresses to dentin and coronal tooth structure when compared to conventional posts, and both metallic posts had lower stresses in the coronal portion structure compared to glass fiber posts. Regarding the dentinal structure, metal posts and fiberglass posts showed similar results of stresses. The fiberglass models showed similar results in both evaluations. We conclude that the custom models were superior to conventional posts when composed by metal, but similar when composed of fiberglass.

Diante da grande preocupação atual por sorrisos que também embelezem um rosto, a escolha por materiais estéticos impulsiona pesquisas, que tem como objetivo não só melhorar a qualidade, mas, facilitar o uso desses materiais pelos profissionais. Assim, a proposta desse trabalho foi avaliar a influência da ciclagem mecânica na resistência de união de uma resina composta associada a um sistema adesivo convencional e um autocondicionante à dentina humana hígida por meio de teste de microtração. Para o estudo, foram utilizados 40 terceiros molares humanos hígidos, nos quais as faces oclusais foram lixadas até a obtenção de uma superfície plana com exposição do tecido dentinário. Os dentes foram divididos, aleatoriamente, em quatro grupos (n=10) de acordo com o sistema adesivo utilizado e a realização ou não da ciclagem mecânica: G1 Sistema adesivo Adper Single Bond 2 sem ciclagem mecânica (SB); G2 Sistema adesivo Clearfil SE Bond sem ciclagem mecânica (CF); G3 - Sistema adesivo Adper Single Bond 2 com ciclagem mecânica (SBC); G4 - Sistema adesivo Clearfil SE Bond sem ciclagem mecânica (CFC). Blocos de resina composta foram confeccionados nas superfícies dentinárias após aplicação do sistema adesivo correspondente. Após esse passo, os espécimes dos grupos 3 e 4 passaram por ciclagem mecânica enquanto o restante ficou armazenado em água destilada, mantidos em estufa à 37ºC até o momento do recorte dos espécimes para o teste de microtração. Os corpos de prova foram seccionados em planos perpendiculares à área de união para obtenção de espécimes com área de secção transversal aproximada de 1,0 mm², que foram tracionados, em máquina de ensaios universal, a velocidade de 0,5mm/min. Os resultados de resistência de união foram analisados usando o teste estatístico análise de variância e os modos de fratura foram avaliados em lupa estereoscópica (25X). O estudo da propagação da luz nas porcelanas é importante para entender seu comportamento óptico frente a situações clínicas como fotoativação de cimentos resinosos e sua resposta estética, quando observada sobre diferentes fundos. Este trabalho estudou a influência da espessura, cor, opacidade e marca comercial das porcelanas feldspáticas na propagação da luz visível, através da teoria de KubelkaMunk (KM), nos intervalos de comprimento de onda de 410500nm e de 410700nm. Foram confeccionados discos de 12,5mm por 1 mm de espessura de porcelana feldspática de duas opacidades, corpo (B) e corpo opaco (BO), das marcas Vintage Halo (HALO), Noritake Super Porcelain EX3 (NORI) e IPS dSIGN (IPS), nas cores A1, A35 e B3 (n=7). Os discos foram polidos através de uma série de lixas abrasivas até a granulação 600 e acondicionados individualmente em ambiente seco. Os discos tiveram suas curvas espectrais de refletância obtidos em contato óptico, sobre fundo branco e preto, através do uso de um espectrofotômetro com esfera de integração acoplada, no intervalo de comprimento de onda de 410700nm. As curvas de refletância foram inseridas na teoria KM, para obtenção e análise quantitativa e qualitativa das propriedades ópticas de cada material. As análises qualitativas envolveram a observação do comportamento espectral das curvas de espalhamento, absorção, espessura infinita e reflexão para todos aos materiais em função do comprimento de onda. As análises quantitativas envolveram a obtenção das espessuras ópticas estimadas em extinções crescentes de 50% (X50), 90% (X90), 95% (X95) e infinita 99.9% (X99.9), para o intervalo de comprimento de onda de 410500nm e a obtenção da espessura óptica infinita 99.9% (X) e dos Parâmetros de Translucidez (TP), estimados nas espessuras de 0.5mm (TP0.5), 1.25mm (TP1.25) e 2.00mm (TP2.00), para o intervalo de comprimento de onda de 410700nm. Os Parâmetros de Translucidez foram utilizados para avaliar o efeito de mascaramento da porcelana sobre os fundos utilizados. Os resultados mostraram que todos os fatores (cor, opacidade e marca comercial) exerceram influência para atenuar a propagação da luz através dos espécimes. De maneira geral, a maior atenuação de luz esteve ligada à porcelanas de corpo opaco e mais saturadas (cor A35 e B3). Em relação à marca comercial a porcelana IPS, atenuou de maneira geral mais luz nas cores A35 e B3 em relação às mesmas cores das marcas HALO e NORI nas espessuras ópticas estudadas. Os valores de espessura óptica infinita (espessura onde a energia transmitida é praticamente zero), para ambos os intervalos de comprimento de onda, para todos os materiais, superaram os limites de espessura clínica indicados pela literatura. Isto implicou que, no caso do intervalo de 410 a 500nm, a energia transmitida pode girar de 20 a 5% para as porcelanas de corpo, e de 10 a 5%, para as de corpo opaco e, no caso do mascaramento, as porcelanas serão mais influenciadas por fundos que apresentarem resposta colorimétrica acentuada nas regiões alaranjadas e avermelhadas do espectro visível. As análises qualitativas mostraram que para todos os materiais e espessuras a luz será preferencialmente atenuada no início do espectro, intervalo de 410 a 500nm e menos atenuada em direção ao final do espectro visível. Os resultados também mostraram que com o aumento da espessura, a atenuação aumentou, e que a relação entre espessura e atenuação é não linear. The study of light propagation through porcelains is important to understand its optical behavior in front of clinical situations such as the photoactivation of luting cements and their esthetic responses, when observed against different backgrounds. This research studies the influence of thickness, shade, opacity, and commercial brands of feldspatic porcelains on the propagation of visible light through the Kubelka Munk Theory for the wavelength intervals of 410500nm and 410700nm. Discs with 12,5mm in diameter and thickness of 1mm were prepared with feldspatic porcelain in two opacities, body (B) and opaque body (BO), three commercial brands; Vintage Halo (HALO), Noritake Super Porcelain EX3 (NORI), and IPS dSIGN (IPS), and three shades, A1, A35, and B3 (n=7). The discs were polished with a series of waterproof sandpapers down to a #600 grade sandpaper, and individually stored in a dry environment. The spectral reflectance curves were acquired from the disks on optical contact, against white and black backgrounds, with a spectrometer with a diffuse reflectance attachment (an attached integration sphere), in the wavelength interval of 410700nm. The reflectance spectra were inserted in the KM theory to quantitatively and qualitatively obtain and analyze the optical properties of each material. The qualitative analyses were obtained from the observation of the spectral behavior of scattering, absorption, infinite optical thickness, and reflection spectra for all materials as a function of the wavelength. The quantitative analyses involved obtaining the predicted optical thicknesses in extinctions with increments of 50% (X50), 90% (X90), 95% (X95) and infinite 99.9% (X99.9), for the wavelength interval of 410500nm and the obtaining of the infinite optical thickness 99.9% (X) and the translucency parameter (TP) estimated as 0.5mm (TP0.5), 1.25mm (TP1.25) e 2.00mm (TP2.00) thicknesses, for the wavelength interval of 410700nm. The Translucency parameters were used to evaluate the porcelain masking effect against the tested backgrounds. The results showed that all factors (Shade, Opacity, and Commercial Brand) exerted influence to attenuate the light propagation through the specimens. In general, a higher light attenuation was linked to porcelains exhibiting more saturated shades (A35, and B3) and body opaque types. The commercial brand IPS porcelain shades A35 and B3, generally attenuated more light than the same shades of HALO and NORI for the studied optical thicknesses. The infinite optical thicknesses values (thicknesses where the transmitted light is close to zero) is above the clinical thickness reported in the literature for all materials and both wavelength intervals. This fact implied that regarding the 410500nm interval, the body porcelain could transmit from 20 to 5% of the energy, while the opaque body transmits from 10 to 5%. The masking effect of the porcelains will be increasingly translucid against the background with increased colorimetric response on the Red Orange regions of the visible spectra. The qualitative analysis showed that for all materials and thicknesses, the light will preferably be attenuated in the beginning of the spectra, on the 410500nm interval e and will be less attenuated towards the ending of the visible spectra. The results also showed that the attenuation increased with the increase of the thickness, and the relationship between thickness and attenuation is nonlinear.

Nesta pesquisa in vitro verificou-se a possibilidade de remoção do manchamento causado por café ou vinho tinto em cinco resinas compostas disponíveis comercialmente, após serem submetidas ao processo de envelhecimento. Trinta e seis espécimes de cada resina composta foram confeccionados em uma matriz de teflon, com 10 mm de diâmetro e 1,5 mm de espessura. Os espécimes foram mantidos em água destilada a 37ºC por 24 horas e, em seguida, polidos com irrigação na politriz (Ecomet Buehler USA) nas duas superfícies, com lixa de carbureto de silício com granulação de número 600, até atingirem a espessura de 1,3 ±0,01 mm. Após o polimento, a cor dos espécimes foi aferida com espectrofotômetro Cintra 10 UV (Visible Spectrometer, GBC, Austrália). Todos os espécimes foram submetidos à ciclagem térmica com temperaturas de 5 e 55ºC, com tempo de imersão de 1 minuto, por 1000 ciclos em solução de 75% álcool-água. Após a ciclagem térmica, os espécimes foram mantidos imersos em água destilada a 37ºC até completar o período de 7 dias da confecção das amostras. Após esse período, todos os espécimes foram levados ao espectrofotômetro para leitura da cor. Os espécimes foram divididos em três grupos, cada um com n=12, de acordo com as soluções em que foram imersos: água destilada (controle), café e vinho tinto. Para que o processo de manchamento acontecesse em uma única superfície do espécime, uma das faces e a superfície lateral do espécime foram isoladas com cera branca. Os espécimes foram imersos nas diferentes soluções e mantidos a 37ºC por 14 dias. Após o período de manchamento, a cera foi removida e a superfície submetida ao manchamento passou por escovação com escova elétrica (Escova Elétrica Braun Oral-B Procter & Gamble do Brasil S.A., Manaus, Brasil) por 30 segundos com pressão leve. Os espécimes foram secos com papel absorvente e novamente levados ao espectrofotômetro para medição da cor. Em seguida, os espécimes foram submetidos a três desgastes de 20 m e a cor foi aferida após cada um dos desgastes. O cálculo da diferença de cor foi realizado através da fórmula CIEDE2000. De acordo com a metodologia utilizada neste estudo, concluiuse que o manchamento provocado por café e vinho tinto nos compósitos avaliados foi superficial e um desgaste de 20 m foi suficiente para remoção de tal manchamento. This in vitro research verified the possible elimination of staining caused by coffee and red wine in five commercial composite resins, after being submitted to thermal cycling. Thirty six specimens were prepared in a teflon mold with 10 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick. The specimens were immersed in water at 37ºC for 24 h and polished (Ecomet Buehler - USA) in both surfaces with a # 600 grit silicon carbide paper until achieve 1.3 ±0.01 mm thickness. After polishing, specimens color was measured in a spectrophotometer Cintra 10 UV (Visible Spectrometer, GBC, Austrália). All specimens were submitted to thermal cycling with temperatures of 5 and 55ºC with a dwell time of 1 minute, for 1000 cycles in a 75% ethanol/water solution. After thermal cycling the specimens were immersed in water at 37ºC until complete 7 days from the preparation of the specimens. All the specimens were then taken into spectrophotometer for measuring the color. The specimens were divided into 3 groups (n=12): distilled water (control), coffee and red wine. For the purpose of the staining process to occur in only one surface, all the side and one of the surfaces were isolated with white wax. The specimens were immersed in one of the solutions at 37ºC for 14 days. After the staining period, the wax was removed and the specimens were brushed with electric toothbrush (Braun Oral-B, Procter & Gamble do Brasil S.A., Manaus, Brasil) for 30 seconds with a slight pressure. The specimens were dry with a tissue paper and were taken to spectrophotometer for measuring the color. Following, the specimens were submitted to three wears of 20 m and the color was measured after each one of the wears. The calculation of the color difference was made through CIEDE2000 formula. According to the methodology used in this research, it was concluded that the staining caused by coffee and red wine was superficial and one wear of 20 m was enough for removing the discoloration.

Nesta pesquisa in vitro verificou-se a possível correlação do manchamento superficial de resinas compostas com grau de conversão, rugosidade, sorção e solubilidade. Foram testados cinco compósitos: Charisma Opal, Filtek P90, GrandioSO, IPS Empress Direct e NDurance; todos da cor A2. Foram confeccionados 40 espécimes de cada material. Dez espécimes foram destinados aos testes de sorção e solubilidade, que foram divididos em dois grupos (n=5): Grupo 1 (com desidratação prévia) e Grupo 2 (sem desidratação prévia). Trinta espécimes foram destinados aos testes de grau de conversão, rugosidade e manchamento superficial; que foram divididos em dois grupos: Imediato e 24 horas. No grupo Imediato, a leitura do espectro para o cálculo do grau de conversão e a leitura da cor inicial (baseline) foram realizadas imediatamente após a confecção dos espécimes, que foram imersos nas bebidas corantes na sequência. No grupo 24 horas, os espécimes foram mantidos em água destilada a 37oC por 24 h. A leitura do espetro final para o cálculo do grau de conversão e a leitura da cor inicial (baseline) foram realizadas 24 h após a confecção dos espécimes, que só então foram imersos nas bebidas corantes. O polimento e a leitura da rugosidade foram realizados após a leitura do espectro e antes da imersão nas bebidas. Os espécimes foram divididos em três grupos (n=5): água destilada (controle), café e vinho tinto. A amostra foi mantida imersa nas bebidas por 7 dias, com temperatura em 37oC. A leitura da cor final foi realizada após esse período, em ambos os grupos. A diferença de cor foi calcula a partir da fórmula CIEDE2000. A análise estatística foi realizada e o teste de Pearson foi aplicado para a análise da correlação das propriedades testadas. De acordo com a metodologia utilizada neste estudo, não foi possível estabelecer correlação entre manchamento dos compósitos resinosos com grau de conversão, rugosidade superficial, sorção e solubilidade; não foi encontrada diferença no manchamento do grupo que foi submetido imediatamente às bebidas corantes com o grupo que foi submetido ao manchamento após 24 horas da sua confecção; o vinho tinto causou maior alteração de cor do que o café; e o comportamento dos compósitos na presença das bebidas corantes não foi semelhante. Além disso, não houve diferença significativa nas duas metodologias usadas para o teste de sorção e solubilidade. This in vitro research verified the possible correlation of superficial staining of resin composites with degree of conversion, roughness, sorption and solubility. Five composites were tested: Charisma Opal, Filtek P90, GrandioSO, IPS Empress Direct and NDurance; shade A2. Forty specimens of each material were prepared. Ten specimens were reserved for sorption/solubility tests and were divided into 2 groups (n=5): Group 1 (with previous dehydration) and Group 2 (without previous dehydration). Thirty specimens were reserved for degree of conversion, roughness and staining tests; which were divided into 2 groups: Immediate and 24 hours. In Immediate group, degree of conversion and initial color measurement (baseline) were calculated immediately after sample preparation, which was immersed in coloring beverages. In 24 hours group, specimens were maintained in distilled water at 37oC for 24 h. Initial color measurement (baseline) and degree of conversion were calculated 24 h after sample preparation. Polishing and roughness measurement were made before the immersion of specimens in beverages. Sample was divided into 3 groups (n=5): distilled water (control), coffee and red wine. The specimens were maintained immersed for staining during 7 days at 37oC. Final color measurement was made after this period, in both groups. Color difference was calculated based on CIEDE2000 formula. Statistical analysis was performed and Pearson test was applied to analyze correlation between the properties tested. According to the methodology used in this research, it was not possible to establish correlation between composite staining and degree of conversion, roughness, sorption and solubility; it was not found any difference between Immediate and 24 hours groups; staining caused by red wine were more intense than coffee; the composites behavior in staining was not similar. Despite of this result, there was no significant difference between the sorption/solubility methods tested.

O bruxismo, uma desordem funcional dentária complexa e destrutiva, é representado por duas entidades que possuem diferentes patogêneses, o Bruxismo diurno ou de vigília (BD), e o Bruxismo do Sono (BS). Este estudo objetivou avaliar as características clínicas apresentadas por indivíduos bruxômanos, comparando-os a não bruxômanos. De um universo de 85 indivíduos foram formados um grupo de bruxômanos, e outro de não bruxômanos (grupo controle), utilizando um questionário de auto-relato para o diagnóstico do bruxismo. Ao exame clínico foram observaddas a ocorrência de diferentes fatores referidos na literatura. Nos resultados, após Análise de Variância com medidas repetidas (ANOVA), foi observado que entre o grupo controle e o grupo de bruxômanos, não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes para a presença de interferência oclusal em protrusiva; lateralidade direita/esquerda; presença de guia de incisivos; presença de guia de caninos bilateral; desvio de linha média; mobilidade dental; recessão gengival; mordida aberta anterior; mordida cruzada anterior; mordida cruzada posterior unilateral; sobremordida; sobressaliência; salto condilar; clicks/estalos na ATM (nos questionários de auto-relato e no exame clínico); ruídos na ATM; limitação da abertura bucal; assimetria facial e para outros hábitos bucais (onicofagia, morder lábios, morder objetos). Entre o grupo controle e o grupo de bruxômanos, houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes para a dor musculatura face; estresse funcional dental; guia de canino unilateral; ausência de guias de caninos; presença de facetas de desgaste; fratura de dentes e/ou restaurações; presença de abfração; hipertonia do músculo masseter. No questionário de qualidade de vida, proposto pela OMS, The WHOQOL Group (1998), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) versão simplificada em português, o cansaço foi o único quesito que apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante, no que diferenciou o grupo de bruxômanos do de não bruxômanos. Bruxism, a functional disorder and destructive dental complex, is represented by two entities that have different pathogenesis, as the Diurnal Bruxism (DB), and Sleep Bruxism (SB). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics displayed by bruxists, comparing them to non bruxists. From a universe of 85 individuals were selected a group of bruxists, and other non bruxists (control group), using a self-report questionnaire for the diagnosis of bruxism. On clinical examination were observaddas the occurrence of different factors reported in the literature. In the results, after Analysis of Variance with repeated measures (ANOVA), was observed between the control group and the bruxists group, there were no statistically significant differences in occlusal interference in protrusive; laterality right / left; guide incisors; canines bilateral guide; midline deviation; tooth mobility; gingival recession; anterior open bite; anterior crossbite; unilateral crossbite; overbite; overjet; jump condylar; clicks / TMJ clicking (on self-report questionnaires and clinical examination); TMJ sounds; limited mouth opening; facial asymmetry and other oral habits (onychophagia, biting lips, biting objects). Between the control group and the group of bruxists, statistically significant differences were observed for pain face muscles; functional dental stress; guide unilateral canine; absence of canine guides; presence of wear facets; broken teeth and / or restorations; presence of abfraction; masseter hypertony; lingual indentations and line Alba. In quality of life questionnaire, proposed by OMS, The WHOQOL Group, 1998, Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) simplified version in Portuguese, the factor fatigue was the only that showed statistically significant difference distinguishing the bruxists group of the group of non bruxists.

A presente pesquisa in vitro teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de alterações superficiais em três resinas compostas disponíveis comercialmente quando submetidas a tratamentos de polimento e jato de bicarbonato. As alterações foram quantificadas através de análises rugosimétricas e qualificadas através de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Foram testadas três resinas compostas:nanoparticulada Z350 (3M ESPE, Saint Paul- MN, EUA), microhíbrida Z250 (3M ESPE, Saint Paul- MN, EUA) emicroparticulada Durafill (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). Para cada resina foram confeccionados quinze corpos de prova com o auxílio de uma matriz aço inox com 7mm de diâmetro e 3 mm de espessura em dois incrementos e fotoativadas seguindo as orientações do fabricante. Os corpos de prova foram mantidos em água destilada a 37°C por 24 horas. Em seguida foram sub divididos em três grupos de acordo com protocolos de acabamento e polimento sendo avaliados o polimento com pontas Enhance® + PoGo (Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany), pontas Astropol (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Lienchtenstein) e discos Sof Lex Pop On (3M ESPE, Saint Paul- MN, EUA). Todos os espécimes foram submetidos à ciclagem térmica de 5 a 55 °C com tempo de imersão 1 minuto por 1000 ciclos. Após a ciclagem os espécimes foram submetidos a jato de bicarbonato (equipamento Ortusonic Ortus, Campo Mourão, PR, Brasil) por 30 segundos. A rugosidade de superfície foi avaliada com o auxílio de uma aparelho rugosímetro ( Mitutoyo SJ- 201P Mitutoyo Tokyo, Japão) em três momentos, sendo a primeira leitura, baseline, realizada após 24hs da confecção dos corpos de prova. A segunda, após o polimento dos corpos de prova e a terceira, após a profilaxia com jato de bicarbonato. A rugosidade foi medida em cinco locais diferentes em cada espécime. Os resultados foram analisados levando em consideração a rugosidade média (Ra), em micrômetros (m). Posteriormente foram realizadas análises ao microscópio eletrônico de varredura. De acordo com a metodologia empregada, conclui-se que a resina que apresentou maior rugosidade de superfície foi a microparticulada (Durafill), as menores rugosidades foram observadas nas resinas compostas nanoparticulada (Z350) e microhibrida (Z250). Os discos Sof Lex Pop On e as pontas Enhance e PoGo produziram superfícies mais lisas do que o sistema de polimento com as pontas Astropol, tais resultados podem ser confirmados com a análise em Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (M.E.V). This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of surface changes in three commercially available resin composites when subjected to polishing treatments and bicarbonate jet. The changes were quantified through roughness analysis and qualified by scanning electron microscopy. We tested three composites: nanoparticulated Z350 (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), microhybrid Z250 (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) e microparticuladed Durafill (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). For each resin were prepared fifteen test specimens with the aid of a stainless steel matrix with 7mm diameter and 3 mm thick and photoactivated in two increments following the manufacturer\'s instructions. The specimens were kept in water at 37 ° C for 24 hours. Then were divided into three groups according to protocols being evaluated finishing and polishing polishing tips with Enhance ® + PoGo (Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany), tips Astropol (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Lienchtenstein) and Sof Lex Pop On disks (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA). All specimens were subjected to thermal cycling 5-55 ° C with a soak time of 1 minute per 1000 cycles. After cycling the specimens underwent bicarbonate jet (Ortusonic Ortus equipment, Campo Mourao, Parana, Brazil) for 30 seconds. The surface roughness was evaluated with the aid of a machine rugosimeter (Mitutoyo Mitutoyo SJ-201P Tokyo, Japan) in three stages, with the first reading, baseline, performed 24 hours after the making of the specimens. The second, after polishing the samples and the third, after prophylaxis with bicarbonate jet. The roughness was measured at five different locations on each specimen. The results were analyzed taking into account the average roughness (Ra) in micrometers (mm). Later analyzes were performed by scanning electron microscope. According to the methodology, it is concluded that the resin with the highest surface roughness was microparticulated (Durafill), the lowest roughness was observed in nanoparticled composites (Z350) and microhybrid (Z250). The Sof Lex Pop On disks and tips Enhance and PoGo produced smoother surfaces than polishing system with tips Astropol, these results can be confirmed with the analysis in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

As lesões cervicais não cariosas (LCNCs) são caracterizadas pela perda de estrutura dental no terço cervical dos dentes, que se origina a partir de mecanismos não relacionados com o processo de cárie. Este trabalho buscou investigar a correlação das LCNCs (severidade e acometimento), com os seguintes fatores: idade, sexo, dieta, hábitos parafuncionais, hábitos de higiene dental, distúrbios gástricos e aspectos oclusais. Foram estudados cinquenta pacientes (36 mulheres e 14 homens), com idades entre 20 e 62 anos (média de 40.9 anos). A avaliação consistiu na aplicação de questionários e exame clínico intraoral. Um índice de desgaste dental foi utilizado para classificação da severidade das LCNCs e do desgaste da borda incisal/face oclusal. Os resultados mostraram que os primeiros pré-molares (20,5%), segundos pré-molares (19,5%), caninos (14%), primeiros molares (13,9%) e segundos molares (11,6%) foram os dentes mais acometidos pelas LCNCs. Foi constatada correlação positiva entre idade e o percentual de dentes acometidos, ou seja, quanto maior a idade do paciente, maior foi o percentual de dentes acometidos com LCNC (p=0,003). Foi constatado que os pacientes com ingestão diária de alimentos e bebidas ácidas apresentaram relação significante com a severidade das LCNCs (p=0,038) e também apresentaram maior percentual de dentes acometidos pelas LCNCs (p=0,014). Não foi verificada relação significante entre as LCNCs (severidade e percentual de dentes acometidos) com o sexo dos pacientes, número de escovações diárias, apertamento dental, bruxismo, distúrbios gástricos, força durante a escovação e tipo de cerdas da escova. Quanto aos aspectos relacionados à oclusão, foi observada pequena correlação (r=0,079) entre o desgaste cervical e o desgaste da borda incisal/face oclusal. Em nenhum caso foi observada diferença estatística significante da severidade das LCNCs entre dentes que participam ou não do movimento de lateralidade. Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) are characterized by loss of tooth structure in the cervical area, and originated by mechanisms unrelated to dental caries process. This study investigated the correlation of NCCL (severity and involvement) with the following factors: age, gender, diet, parafunctional habits, dental hygiene, gastric disorders and occlusal aspects. Fifty patients (36 female and 14 male) aged between 20 and 62 years (mean age of 40.9 years) were evaluated. The evaluation consisted of questionnaires and intraoral clinical examination. A Tooth Wear Index was used to classify the severity of NCCL and wear of the incisal/ occlusal surface. Results indicate that first premolars (20,5%), second premolars (19,5%), canine (14%), first molars (13,9%) and second molars (11,6%) were the teeth most affected by NCCL. There was correlation between the age of patients and the percentage of teeth affected, meaning that the older the patient, the higher the percentage of teeth affected with NCCL (p=0,003). Patients with daily intake of acidic foods and beverages presented a significant relationship with the severity of NCCL (p=0,038) and also a higher percentage of teeth affected by NCCL (p=0,014). There was no significant relationship between NCCL (severity and percentage of affected teeth) and gender of patients, number of daily brushings, teeth clenching, bruxism, gastric disorders, force applied during toothbrushing and characteristics of the toothbrushes. There was a small correlation (r=0,079) between NCCL and the wear of incisal/occlusal surface. Regarding the severity of NCCL, no significant statistical differences were observed between the teeth involved or not in the lateral excursive movement.

Objetivo: Este estudo se propõe a verificar a influência do adesivo, material de preenchimento e hibridização da dentina na força de retenção de pinos intra-radiculares na técnica direta indireta e comparar o teste de tração de push out com o pull out. Métodos: 60 raízes de dentes bovinos com comprimento de 12 mm foram tratadas endodonticamente e divididas aleatoriamente em 6 grupos (n=10): grupo 1 (técnica direta-indireta, adesivo fotopolimerizável, cimento resinoso, teste de pull out); grupo 2 (idem ao grupo 1 porém o cimento resinoso foi substituído pela resina composta); grupo 3 (idem ao grupo anterior porém o adesivo fotopolimerizável foi substituído pelo químico); grupo 4 (idem ao anterior porém o teste utilizado foi o de push out); grupo 5 (idem ao grupo anterior porém o adesivo utilizado foi o auto condicionante); e grupo 6 (idem ao grupo anterior porém a dentina foi pré hibridizada). Este estudo avaliou a influência de três iluminantes e da diferença na rugosidade superficial de réplicas de dentes artificias na percepção da diferença de cor entre profissionais da Odontologia e verificou se houve variação na opinião de 20 profissionais uma semana após a primeira avaliação. O único critério de exclusão dos participantes foi a deficiência na visão cromática, avaliada através da versão simplificada do teste de Ishihara. Dos 117 profissionais entrevistados, 6 (5,1%) homens e 11 (9,4%) mulheres foram excluídos do estudo, pois identificaram incorretamente 1 ou mais pranchas da versão simplificada do teste de Ishihara. Neste estudo foram utilizados 4 pares de réplicas de dentes artificiais, sendo que cada par foi confeccionado em resina composta nas cores A1, A3, B1 ou B2, porém uma réplica apresentava superfície lisa e a outra, superfície rugosa. Todas as avaliações foram realizadas em cabine de luz sob os iluminantes D65, A e F2. Para cada iluminante, os participantes foram questionados se havia diferença de cor entre as réplicas. Após uma semana, todo o experimento foi repetido por 20 profissionais selecionados aleatoriamente. A análise dos resultados sugeriu que os iluminantes e a diferença na textura superficial influenciaram a percepção da diferença cor entre as réplicas e que após uma semana houve variação na opinião dos observadores. This study evaluated the influence of three different illuminants and the difference on surface roughness of artificial teeth replica on the color difference perception among dental professionals and if there were variations on 20 professionals opinion 1 week after the first evaluation. The color vision deficiency was the only exclusion criteria used and a screening for color defective vision was conducted by using the simplified version of Ishihara test. Among the 117 professionals interviewed, 6 (5.1%) men and 11 (9.4%) women who missed 1 or more plates did not take part in this study. The test was composed by 4 pairs of artificial composite resin teeth replicas was confectioned with the same color A1, A3, B1 or B2, but the surface of one replica was smooth and the surface of the other one was rough. All the evaluations were conducted in light booth with D65, A and F2 illuminants. In each illuminant the participants were asked if there were color difference between the replicas. After one week, all the experiment was repeated by 20 participants randomly selected. The analysis of the results suggested that the illuminant and the difference on surface texture influenced the difference color perception between the replicas and reaffirm that the professionals opinion varied after one week of the first evaluation.

Dentro do aspecto estético atual, a harmonia entre a cor do elemento dental e dos materiais restauradores é um dos quesitos mais relevantes e de maior dificuldade técnica. A utilização de aparelhos para a seleção de cor pelo método digital propõese a diminuir o aspecto subjetivo do processo de visão das cores, minimizando dessa forma possíveis falhas do processo. Este estudo simulou três situações clínicas em peças protéticas cerâmicas na forma de três tratamentos de superfície, um desgaste com ponta de carboneto de silício, um glazeamento a frio e um overglaze em forno para porcelana. Em seguida avaliou-se a interferência dos tratamentos na cor de duas marcas comerciais de porcelana, com e sem a presença de saliva, através do método objetivo de seleção de cor, com auxílio de um espectrofotômetro digital intraoral. Concluiu-se que não houve alteração de cor perceptível ao olho humano de nenhum material sob os tratamentos superficiais realizados, porém, entretanto nota-se uma mudança maior da cor para o tratamento overglaze em relação aos demais tratamentos; a diferença de cor causada pela presença de saliva na porcelana Noritake e os valores encontrados para a porcelana Duceram foram valores perceptíveis ao olho humano treinado em seleção de cor; o tratamento overglaze na porcelana Duceram foi o que maior E promoveu, chegando próximo ao limite aceitável; na presença de saliva os valores de E todos aumentaram para a porcelana Noritake e diminuíram para a porcelana Duceram, indicando que as diferentes composições dos materiais alteram seu comportamento; a diferença entre as medidas com e sem saliva para a porcelana Noritake é mais evidente do que para Duceram; o aparelho é falho em algumas interpretações, mas é aceitável para o uso clínico de tomada de cor; o aparelho não é indicado para tomada de cor em estudos científicos; as análises dos dados L*a*b* não são condizentes com as leituras de cor pelas escalas Vita Classical e 3D Master. Considering the current aesthetic aspect, the harmony between the color of the tooth and dental restorative materials is one of the issues of greatest importance and technical difficulty. The use of apparatus for the selection of color by digital method proposes to reduce the subjective aspect of the vision of colors, thus minimizing possible failures of the process. This study simulated clinical situations in three prosthetic ceramic pieces in the form of three surface treatments, a scattering using silicon carbide bur, a cold glaze and an overglaze in ceramic oven. Then we evaluate the interference of the treatments on the color of the two porcelains, with and without the presence of saliva using the objective method of color matching, with the aid of a digital intraoral spectrophotometer. It was concluded that there was no change in color perceptible to the human eye of any material on the surface treatments carried out, however, there is a greater change in color for the treatment overglaze when compared to other treatments; the difference in color caused by the presence of saliva in the Noritake and the values found for all treatments in Duceram were visible to the human eye trained on color selection; the treatment overglaze on porcelain Duceram caused the highest E , reaching the acceptable limit; in the presence of saliva values of E increased for Noritake and decreased for Duceram, indicating that the different compositions of materials can alter their behavior; the difference between measurements with and without saliva for Noritake porcelain is more evident than for Duceram; the device is deficient in some interpretations, but is acceptable for the clinical use of color matching; the equipment is not indicated for color matching in scientific studies; the analysis of the data La*b* are not consistent with the readings of the color tabs Vita Classical and 3D Master.

Este estudo comparou a percepção da diferença de cor entre profissionais da Odontologia e a influência de cada coordenada na percepção da diferença de cor. O critério de exclusão dos participantes foi a deficiência na visão cromática que foi avaliada através da versão simplificada do teste de Ishihara. Dois homens identificaram incorretamente 1 ou mais pranchas e foram excluídos do estudo. Participaram desta pesquisa 51 pessoas: 20 alunos do último ano de graduação, 20 clínicos gerais e 11 professores. Todas avaliações foram realizadas sob iluminante D65 e em cabine de luz. Neste experimento foram utilizados 1 cartão padrão e 3 conjuntos de cartões. Cada conjunto de cartões foi composto por 1 cartão que apresenta os mesmos valores de L*, a* e b* que o cartão padrão e 6 cartões que apresentavam variações em apenas uma das coordenadas. Solicitamos aos participantes que selecionassem: 1 cartão que não apresentasse diferença de cor em relação ao cartão padrão, 1 cartão cuja diferença de cor em relação ao cartão padrão seria aceitável e 1 cartão cuja diferença de cor seria inaceitável. A análise dos resultados sugere que não houve diferença na percepção da diferença de cor entre homens e mulheres e entre alunos de graduação, clínicos gerais e professores em qualquer dos grupos. This study investigated the perception of color difference among distinct group of dental personnel and the influence of each color coordinate on the perception of color difference. The color vision deficiency was the only exclusion criteria used. Screening for color defective vision was conducted using the simplified version of Ishihara test. Two men who missed 1 or more plates did not take part in this study. Fifty one subjects took part in this experiment: 20 final year dental students, 20 dental practitioners and 11 teachers. All visual assessments were conducted with D65 illumination of visual observation booth. Test was composed of 1 standard card and 3 sets of cards. Each set consisted of 1 card that did not differ from standard card and 6 cards that differed from the standard card in only one coordinate L*, a* or b*. The subjects were asked to select: 1 card that matched to the standard card; 1 card that color difference from the standard card would be acceptable; and 1 card that color difference from the standard card would be unacceptable. The analysis of percentis suggests that within the limitations of this study: there were no significant difference in color difference perception between men and women or between dental students, dental practitioners and teachers.
