To assess psychosocial quality of life in school-age children of divorced parents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the pediatric outpatient clinic of a community hospital. Children 5 to 12 years old from married families and divorced families were included. Child quality of life was assessed through maternal reports using a Child Health Questionnaire - Parent Form 50. A multiple linear regression model was constructed including clinically relevant variables significant on univariate analysis (beta coefficient and 95%CI). RESULTS: Three hundred and thirty families were invited to participate and 313 completed the questionnaire. Univariate analysis showed that quality of life was significantly associated with parental separation, child sex, time spent with the father, standard of living, and maternal education. In a multiple linear regression model, quality of life scores decreased in boys -4.5 (-6.8 to -2.3) and increased for time spent with the father 0.09 (0.01 to 0.2). In divorced families, multiple linear regression showed that quality of life scores increased when parents had separated by mutual agreement 6.1 (2.7 to 9.4), when the mother had university level education 5.9 (1.7 to 10.1) and for each year elapsed since separation 0.6 (0.2 to 1.1), whereas scores decreased in boys -5.4 (-9.5 to -1.3) and for each one-year increment of maternal age -0.4 (-0.7 to -0.05). CONCLUSION: Childrens psychosocial quality of life was affected by divorce. The Child Health Questionnaire can be useful to detect a decline in the psychosocial quality of life.

Research is important during university education. The objective was to describe the teaching of an exercise in clinical research and its perception by students. Medical students conducted a research work in groups coordinated by a tutor. We evaluated the importance the students gave to research learning and we assessed the satisfaction of having participated in the activity in a scale from 1 to 10. Eighty-one students developed 14 research exercises, 44.4% reported having received training in research methodology before and 11.1% had participated in some research study. They assigned a score of 8 out of 10 to the importance of research and 9 out of 10 to the satisfaction of having participated in the activity. The aspects of the exercise in clinical research perceived as positive were that it favoured teamwork and helped students to understand how to conduct a research study.

In the last year there was happened a series of adolescent deaths in the province of Salta that might be related to a dangerous game known as "the choking game". It has been practiced over many years in different countries around the world and consists of provoking brain hypoxia for some seconds by different techniques to obtain an instant of ecstasy and pleasure. We consider relevant that health providers know about this practice and so be able to recognize through signs and symptoms when an adolescent might be playing this game.

Consultation to complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) in the pediatric population is becoming more frequent. To assess the prevalence of the consultations, the communication with their doctors and the characteristics of patients and families who consult CAM.A transversal study was done. All healthy children age 4 to 17 who attended with a responsible adult to the emergency unit were included. The sample was taken in a consecutive non randomized way.Two hundred and eighty carers of the children were invited to participate in the study and 246 completed the survey. All of the patients had their basic needs satisfied and a health insurance. The medium age of the children was 9.2 and the one of the carers 39.6 years. In 72% of the visits the carer was the mother and in 24% the father. Some CAM was known by 84.5% and 13% had consulted in some opportunity. Homeopathy was the most known (76%) and consulted (8.8%). 96.7% of the children that used a CAM continued their clinical follow-up with their pediatrician but 42% of the carers did not tell this to the pediatrician. The carers of the patients who consulted CAM said that more time was given in the visit (42%), the symptoms for which their consulted got better (78.5%) and they found an answer to their child's health problem (87%).From surveyed people, 84.5% knew about CAM and 13% of the children had consulted at some moment. Homeopathy was the most known (76%) and the most consulted (8.8%). Almost all of the children that consulted a CAM continued their clinical follow-up with their pediatrician but 42% didn't tell them about their consultation.
