Abstract

The family of finite subsets $s$ of the natural numbers such that $|s|=1+\min s$ is known as the Schreier barrier in combinatorics and Banach Space theory, and as the family of exactly $\omega$-large sets in Logic. We formulate and prove the generalizations of Friedman's Free Set and Thin Set theorems and of Rainbow Ramsey's theorem to colorings of the Schreier barrier. We analyze the strength of these theorems from the point of view of Computability Theory and Reverse Mathematics. Surprisingly, the exactly $\omega$-large counterparts of the Thin Set and Free Set theorems can code $\emptyset^{(\omega)}$, while the exactly $\omega$-large Rainbow Ramsey theorem does not code the halting set., Comment: 32 pages

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) radioguided salvage pelvic lymph node dissection (S-PLND) has emerged as a feasible treatment option for prostate cancer recurrence following initial surgery. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and short-term outcomes of PSMA radioguided S-PLND. METHODS: From a prospective trial of 99mTc-PSMA-I&S followed by PSMA radioguided robotic surgery, we evaluated patients treated for node-only recurrence following radical therapy. The primary outcome was serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response 3 mo after surgery. KEY FINDINGS AND LIMITATIONS: Among 14 patients (enrolled from June 2021 to June 2023), the median age was 65 yr. One patient had undergone primary whole gland ultrasound ablation, while the rest received prior prostatectomy. The median (interquartile range) time from primary treatment to PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) was 4.1 (2.9-8.3) yr, and 21 total pelvic targets were noted on PSMA PET: one in eight patients (67%), two in five patients (29%), and three in one patient (7%). Targets were successfully detected intraoperatively and removed in 13/14 (93%) patients. Cancer was noted on histopathology in 90% (19/21) of PSMA PET targets, 94% (17/18) of single-photon emission computed tomography targets, and 82% (14/17) of gamma probe targets. Abstract

PURPOSE: Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) is an emerging theranostic target that is highly expressed on cancer-associated fibroblasts and on certain tumor cells including sarcoma. We investigated the anti-tumor efficacy of [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 as monotherapy or in combination with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in immunocompetent murine models of sarcoma sensitive or resistant to ICB. METHODS: [68Ga]Ga- and [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 were tested in subcutaneous FAP+ FSA fibrosarcoma bearing C3H/Sed/Kam mice. The efficacy of up to three cycles of 60 kBq [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 was evaluated as monotherapy and in combination with an anti-PD-1 antibody. Efficacy of [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 and/or ICB was further compared in FAP-overexpressing FSA (FSA-F) tumors that were sensitive to ICB or rendered ICB-resistant by tumor-induction in the presence of Abatacept. RESULTS: [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 was well tolerated up to 3 × 60 kBq but had minimal effect on FSA tumor growth. The combination of three cycles [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 and ICB resulted in growth delay in 55% of mice (6/11) and partial tumor regression in 18% (2/11) of mice. In FSA-F tumors with FAP overexpression, both [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 and ICB were effective without additional benefits from the combination. In locally immunosuppressed and ICB resistant FAP-F tumors, however, [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 restored responsiveness to ICB, resulting in significant tumor regression and tumor-free survival of 56% of mice in the combination group up to 60 days post treatment. CONCLUSION: [225Ac]Ac-FAPI-46 efficacy is correlated with tumoral FAP expression levels and can restore responsiveness to PD-1 ICB. These data illustrate that careful patient selection based on target expression and rationally designed combination therapies are critically important to maximize the therapeutic impact of FAP-targeting radioligands.

Abstract

PPG-based Blood Pressure (BP) estimation is a challenging biosignal processing task for low-power devices such as wearables. State-of-the-art Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) trained for this task implement either a PPG-to-BP signal-to-signal reconstruction or a scalar BP value regression and have been shown to outperform classic methods on the largest and most complex public datasets. However, these models often require excessive parameter storage or computational effort for wearable deployment, exceeding the available memory or incurring too high latency and energy consumption. In this work, we describe a fully-automated DNN design pipeline, encompassing HW-aware Neural Architecture Search (NAS) and Quantization, thanks to which we derive accurate yet lightweight models, that can be deployed on an ultra-low-power multicore System-on-Chip (SoC), GAP8. Starting from both regression and signal-to-signal state-of-the-art models on four public datasets, we obtain optimized versions that achieve up to 4.99% lower error or 73.36% lower size at iso-error. Noteworthy, while the most accurate SoA network on the largest dataset can not fit the GAP8 memory, all our optimized models can; our most accurate DNN consumes as little as 0.37 mJ while reaching the lowest MAE of 8.08 on Diastolic BP estimation.

Abstract

Aim of the present manuscript is to provide an overview of all possible methods and light source typologies used by the different research groups for obtaining the energetic nano-materials’ photo-ignition, showing the latest progress related to such phenomenon employing, also, alternative radiation sources to the common Xe lamp. In fact, the employment of a different source typology can open new usage prospects respect to those enabled by the Xe lamp, mainly due to its technological limitations. Therefore, several studies are faced to test light sources, such as lasers and LEDs, for igniting the nano-energetic materials (as CNTs mixed with metallic catalyzers, Al / CuO nano-particles, etc); these nano-materials are usefully employed for starting, in volumetric and controlled way, the combustion of air-fuel mixtures inside internal combustion engines, leading to significant benefits to the combustion process also in terms of efficiency, reliability, and emissions of pollutants. Several research works are presented in literature concerning the ignition of liquid / gaseous fuels, without nano-particles, employing laser sources (i.e laser-based plugs in place of the common spark plugs); therefore, an innovative solution is proposed that employs multi-point laser-plugs for inducing the ignition of nano-materials dispersed into the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder, so further improving the combustion of the fuel in an internal combustion engine.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to characterize hemodynamic changes during trans-vascular stimulation of the renal nerve and their dependence on stimulation parameters. We employed a stimulation catheter inserted in the right renal artery under fluoroscopic guidance, in pigs. Systolic, diastolic and pulse blood pressure and heart rate were recorded during stimulations delivered at different intravascular sites along the renal artery or while varying stimulation parameters (amplitude, frequency, and pulse width). Blood pressure changes during stimulation displayed a pattern more complex than previously described in literature, with a series of negative and positive peaks over the first two minutes, followed by a steady state elevation during the remainder of the stimulation. Pulse pressure and heart rate only showed transient responses, then they returned to baseline values despite constant stimulation. Abstract

Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Abstract

A well-ordering principle is a principle of the form: If $X$ is well-ordered then $F(X)$ is well-ordered, where $F$ is some natural operator transforming linear orders into linear orders. Many important subsystems of Second-order Arithmetic of interest in Reverse Mathematics are known to be equivalent to well-ordering principles. We give a unified treatment for proving lower bounds on the logical strength of various Ramsey-theoretic principles relations using characterizations of the corresponding formal systems in terms of well-ordering principles. Our implications (over $RCA_0$) from combinatorial theorems to $ACA_0$ and $ACA_0^+$ also establish uniform computable reductions of the corresponding well-ordering principles to the corresponding Ramsey-type theorems.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Leveraging the Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP) Lupus Nephritis (LN) dataset, we evaluated longitudinal patterns, rates, and predictors of response to standard-of-care therapy in patients with lupus nephritis. METHODS: Patients from US academic medical centers with class III, IV, and/or V LN and a baseline urine protein/creatinine (UPCR) ratio ≥ 1.0 (n = 180) were eligible for this analysis. Complete response (CR) required the following: (1) UPCR  50% reduction in UPCR; (2) normal serum creatinine or, if abnormal, ≤ 125% of baseline; and (3) prednisone dose ≤ 15 mg/day. RESULTS: Response rates to the standard of care at week 52 were CR = 22.2%; PR = 21.7%; non-responder (NR) = 41.7%, and not determined (ND) = 14.4%. Only 8/180 (4.4%) patients had a week 12 CR sustained through week 52. Eighteen (10%) patients attained a week 12 PR or CR and sustained their responses through week 52 and 47 (26.1%) patients achieved sustained PR or CR at weeks 26 and 52. Week 52 CR or PR attainment was associated with baseline UPCR > 3 (ORadj = 3.71 [95%CI = 1.34-10.24]; p = 0.012), > 25% decrease in UPCR from baseline to week 12 (ORadj = 2.61 [95%CI = 1.07-6.41]; p = 0.036), lower chronicity index (ORadj = 1.33 per unit decrease [95%CI = 1.10-1.62]; p = 0.003), and positive anti-dsDNA antibody (ORadj = 2.61 [95%CI = 0.93-7.33]; p = 0.069). CONCLUSIONS: CR and PR rates at week 52 were consistent with the standard-of-care response rates observed in prospective registrational LN trials. Low sustained response rates underscore the need for more efficacious therapies and highlight how critically important it is to understand the molecular pathways associated with response and non-response.

Abstract

Abstract Background Immune cell metabolism governs the outcome of immune responses and contributes to the development of autoimmunity by controlling lymphocyte pathogenic potential. In this study, we evaluated the metabolic profile of myelin-specific murine encephalitogenic T cells, to identify novel therapeutic targets for autoimmune neuroinflammation. Methods We performed metabolomics analysis on actively-proliferating encephalitogenic T cells to study their overall metabolic profile in comparison to resting T cells. Metabolomics, phosphoproteomics, in vitro functional assays, and in vivo studies in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS), were then implemented to evaluate the effect of metabolic targeting on autoreactive T cell pathogenicity. Finally, we confirmed the translational potential of our targeting approach in human pro-inflammatory T helper cell subsets and in T cells from MS patients. Results We found that autoreactive encephalitogenic T cells display an altered coenzyme A (CoA) synthesis pathway, compared to resting T cells. CoA fueling with the CoA precursor pantethine (PTTH) affected essential immune-related processes of myelin-specific T cells, such as cell proliferation, cytokine production, and cell adhesion, both in vitro and in vivo. Accordingly, pre-clinical treatment with PTTH before disease onset inhibited the development of EAE by limiting T cell pro-inflammatory potential in vivo. Importantly, PTTH also significantly ameliorated the disease course when administered after disease onset in a therapeutic setting. Finally, PTTH reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine production by human T helper 1 (Th1) and Th17 cells and by T cells from MS patients, confirming its translational potential. Conclusion Our data demonstrate that CoA fueling with PTTH in pro-inflammatory and autoreactive T cells may represent a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of autoimmune neuroinflammation.

35. Effect of hydrogen addition in diesel/natural gas dual-fuel combustion with late injection

Abstract

In a previous work, the effectiveness of late pilot injection on improving combustion behaviour – in terms of fuel conversion efficiency and pollutant emission levels – in a diesel/natural gas dual-fuel engine was assessed. Then, an additional set of experiments was performed, aiming at speeding up the combustion process possibly without penalizing NOx levels. Therefore, hydrogen was added to natural gas in a percentage equal to 10%. Results show that hydrogen addition has a significant effect on the combustion development specially during the early stage of combustion: ignition delay is shortened and combustion centre is advanced, while the combustion duration increases when pilot injection timing is set to conventional values, while remains basically unchanged for late timings. Fuel conversion efficiency is only slightly penalized when hydrogen is added. Moreover, it was confirmed that, in general, combustion strategy with late pilot injection timing does not penalize fuel conversion efficiency; indeed, in some cases, it actually increases. Concerning regulated emission levels, it is again proven that late pilot injection does not penalize pollutant production: the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide reduce as pilot injection is delayed, probably due to the higher temperatures reached into the cylinder during most part of the expansion stroke. Moreover, adding hydrogen always reduces their levels. Concerning NOx, they are drastically reduced delaying pilot injection; as expected, hydrogen addition promotes NOx formation, but the increase, evident with conventional pilot injection timings, becomes marginal with late injection strategy. Therefore, combustion strategy performance with late pilot injection in dual-fuel diesel/natural gas combustion conditions can be further improved with 10% hydrogen addition to natural gas.

Abstract

Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Abstract

The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Abstract

This study experimentally investigates the temperature distribution and behavior of a 48V Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) battery pack during two charge-discharge cycles using 25 thermocouples. Results indicate that better convective heat transfer occurs at the external surfaces of the pack, while middle cells reach maximum temperatures. Differences are also observed in the behavior of the three modules. The discharge cycle shows a temperature rise of 5.8{\deg}C with a pack temperature gradient increasing from 1.3{\deg}C to 2.7{\deg}C. The study highlights the importance of assessing the thermal behavior of each module and the complexity of the Li-ion battery pack system. Findings on the battery cells, modules, and pack in the same study can provide valuable insights for designing efficient cooling systems for Li-ion battery packs., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Aircraft uptime is getting increasingly important as the transport solutions become more complex and the transport industry seeks new ways of being competitive. To reach this objective, traditional Fleet Management systems are gradually extended with new features to improve reliability and then provide better maintenance planning. Main goal of this work is the development of iterative algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence to define the engine removal plan and its maintenance work, optimizing engine availability at the customer and maintenance costs, as well as obtaining a procurement plan of integrated parts with planning of interventions and implementation of a maintenance strategy. In order to reach this goal, Machine Learning has been applied on a workshop dataset with the aim to optimize warehouse spare parts number, costs and lead-time. This dataset consists of the repair history of a specific engine type, from several years and several fleets, and contains information like repair claim, engine working time, forensic evidences and general information about processed spare parts. Using these data as input, several Machine Learning models have been built in order to predict the repair state of each spare part for a better warehouse handling. A multi-label classification approach has been used in order to build and train, for each spare part, a Machine Learning model that predicts the part repair state as a multiclass classifier does. Mainly, each classifier is requested to predict the repair state (classified as “Efficient”, “Repaired” or “Replaced”) of the corresponding part, starting from two variables: the repairing claim and the engine working time. Then, global results have been evaluated using the Confusion Matrix, from which Accuracy, Precision, Recall and F1-Score metrics are retrieved, in order to analyse the cost of incorrect prediction. These metrics are calculated for each spare part related model on test sets and, then, a final single performance value is obtained by averaging results. In this way, three Machine Learning models (Naïve Bayes, Logistic Regression and Random Forest classifiers) are applied and results are compared. Naïve Bayes and Logistic Regression, that are fully probabilistic methods, have best global performances with an accuracy value of almost 80%, making the models being correct most of the times.

44. Assessment of late pilot injection effect in dual-fuel combustion

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of late injection on combustion and emission levels has been investigated on a single cylinder compression ignition engine operated in dual-fuel mode injecting methane along the intake duct and igniting it through a pilot fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber. During the tests, the amount of pilot fuel injected per cycle has been kept constant, while the amount of methane has been varied on three levels. Therefore, three levels of engine load have been tested, while speed has been kept constant equal to 1500rpm. Pilot injection pressure has been varied on three set points, namely 500, 1000 and 1500 bar. For each engine load and injection pressure, pilot injection timing has been swept on a very broad range of values, spanning from very advanced to very late values. The analysis of heat release rate indicates that MK-like conditions are established in dual-fuel mode with late pilot injection. In these conditions, pollutant species, and NOx levels in particular, are significantly reduced without penalization – and in several conditions with improvement – on fuel conversion efficiency.

Abstract

Abstract Background We evaluated the prevalence of “heart stress” (HS) based on NT-proBNP cut-points proposed by the 2023 Consensus of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in asymptomatic patients with T2DM and hypertension or high-normal blood pressure (BP) eligible for SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and/or GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA), drugs with proven benefits on reducing the incidence of HF, hospitalizations, cardiovascular events and mortality. Methods A cross-sectional multicentric study was conducted on 192 consecutive outpatients, aged ≥ 55 years, with hypertension or high-normal BP, referred to three diabetology units. NT-proBNP was collected before starting new anti-diabetic therapy. Patients with known HF were excluded, and participants were classified based on the age-adjusted NT-proBNP cut-points.
