1. Obstacles and Opportunities for Learning from Demonstration in Practical Industrial Assembly: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Learning from demonstration is one of the most promising methods to counteract the challenging long-term trends in repetitive industrial assembly. It offers not only a programming technique that is accessible to workers on the shop floor, reducing the need for robot experts and the associated costs but also a possible solution to the observable shift from mass-production to mass-customisation through flexible and generalising systems. Since the emergence of the learning from demonstration idea in the 1980s, its methodologies, capabilities, and achievements have constantly evolved. However, despite reports of continued progress in academic publications, the concept has not yet robustly emerged across the assembly industry. In light of its great potential, this paper presents the findings from a systematic literature review following the updated Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. It aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art learning from demonstration solutions developed for assembly-related tasks and offer a critical discussion of remaining obstacles in order to drive its progression towards meaningful deployments. The analysis includes a total of 61 papers over the period of 2013-2023 sourced from Scopus and Web of Science databases. Findings indicate that learning from demonstration has attained a significant level of maturity within the research environment, as evidenced by thorough experimental achievements, proving its great promise for industrial assembly applications. Abstract

Axial, flexure, and shear loads are the most common loads that could impact any structure. For instance, wall panels and columns majorly carry axial loads from the beam and slabs; they are also susceptible to flexure and shear loads from the wind or earthquake loads. Insulated concrete form (ICF) is a portable component of interconnected expanded polystyrene (EPS) panels filled with concrete. EPS remains in place and becomes part of the wall to enhance thermal resistance and structural performance. This paper focuses on an experiment that investigated the performance of ICF wall panels under axial compression and flexure. EPS with a higher density of 20 and 40 kg/m3 and a higher thickness of 50 and 100 mm was selected to prepare ICF wall panels for this experimental investigation. In addition, the plain concrete panel was cast for reference. Axial, flexure, and shear load-carrying capacity, load displacement, load–deflection profiles, crack propagation patterns, failure nature, and strain energy are analyzed and reported in this paper. It was observed that ICF panels were superior to plain concrete panels in terms of axial, flexure, and shear load-carrying capacity, failure nature, and absorbed strain energy.

16. An IoT Sensing Platform and Serious Game for Remote Martial Arts Training.

Abstract

We propose a system for self-supported martial arts training using an IoT sensing platform and Serious Game that can also be extended for general sports training. In martial arts, it is important that the practitioner is correctly performing each technique to accurately learn and prevent injury. A common stance in all martial arts, but especially in Shaolin Kung Fu, is the horse stance or Mabu. With the pandemic, many more people adopted remote training without the presence of a professional trainer to give advice. Our developed LifeMat system, which is a novel IoT pressure-sensitive training mat, uses pressure maps and pattern recognition to accurately classify key martial arts postures, provide feedback on form, and detect when the user performs the technique incorrectly. This is presented in the form of a Serious Game we have developed named Kung Future that focuses on the Mabu stance as a case study. We tested 14 participants with three different feedback conditions and demonstrated that, on average, participants had higher performance, duration, engagement, and motivation when game feedback was active. Furthermore, user responses from the surveys suggested positive feedback for real-world and long-term use and scalability.

Abstract

AbstractCollaborative robots (“cobots”) have attracted growing attention in academia and industry over the last years. Due to in-built safety features and easy programming, they allow for close human-cobot collaboration and support e.g. flexible manufacturing. However, the lack of a common understanding what a cobot is along with its traditional focus on arm-based cobots complicates further research and industry adoption. Thus, this paper analyses the variety of definitions in literature incl. standards and practice examples to derive a consistent and holistic definition and taxonomy of what a collaborative robot is. Aside from contributing a structured overview of various forms of human-robot collaboration, this builds an important foundation for future research as it systematically differentiates different cobot types. Companies and other organisations will benefit by a better understanding of what type of cobot they need and how to ensure safe collaboration.

Abstract

The disposal of non-biodegradable materials like polyethylene, tetrapak etc have been a severe threat to the surrounding environment especially in developing/ under developing countries. Out of that, the polyethylene materials are commonly used to pack food and essential commodities like milk, curd, ghee, oil, snacks etc. After usage of these products, the polyethylene packs are left as solid wastes which was disposed either incineration or by dumping as landfills. An effort to find useful application of those polyethylene material wastes is on one side. In other side the existing pavements are not able to withstand the increase in traffic loads and thereby results to premature failure causing various pavement distress. In these aspects, to explore new suitable and sustainable alternative bituminous mix is a demanding need. In order to address both these issues, the present study investigated the suitability of polyethylene wastes in to the bitumen concrete mix. For this study, the polyethylene wastes of milk packets are shredded to a varying length of 1.5 cm, 3 cm, and 6 cm are mixed in dry pieces with the heated aggregates at temperature of 150–170 °C. Marshall specimen of bituminous concrete with and without shredded polyethylene wastes are prepared and tested as per the standard procedure. The Marshall characteristics like Marshall Stability, flow value, unit weight, air voids etc are determined. Based on the performance evaluation, all the Marshall characteristics of the mix are found to be satisfied for the utilization of shredded polyethylene waste strip 3.0 cm at 0.5% by weight of aggregate for both bitumen content 5% and 6%.

28. BENEFIT OF OPTIMAL ACTUATOR SELECTION - A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract

Actuators are a vital component, and often the limiting factor in robotics and robotic-related applications like humanoids, exoskeletons, prosthetics and orthosis. Actuator selection is critical due to system design flow-on effects including weight, energy consumption and form factor. A designer's challenge is often to optimize the actuator to minimize size or weight and meet the performance specifications usually with trade-offs. This paper investigates the design impacts of selecting more suited actuators on the system through a representative humanoid configuration performing a task. It also looks at variations based on the scale of the humanoid using human anthropometric data for variations in limb lengths. The torques and speeds required at each joint to complete the task is simulated and the system design is updated to keep a constant member stress across all designs. The total energy and weight are calculated and used to compare actuator selection impacts. By knowing the extent of the flow-on effects actuator selection has on a configuration, and how this effect scales, designers are able to determine what investment should be allocated to locating the ideal actuator for their task.

29. Owro: A Novel Robot For Sitting Posture Training Based On Adaptive Human Robot Interaction

Abstract

Human and machine interaction is shaping the future of work in a growing body of applications ranging from big data analysis to healthcare. While many employer-centered solutions have emerged in recent years in areas such as crowd-sourcing and big-data analysis, worker-centered approaches have received less attention. In this work, we explore a worker-centered application of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) for improving human well-being at work through actively sensing and recognising sitting posture habits. We present a platform for data-driven human sitting posture training based on adaptive HRI feedback using a novel robot called Owro. Owro is an owl-shaped emotive desktop robot that connects with the LifeChair, which is an IoT cushion for sitting posture training. The robot displays various emotive feedback to correct poor sitting habits based on the actively recognised human sitting posture. Our results demonstrated that the HRI feedback was effective in improving sitting posture by significantly increasing the percentage of time spent sitting upright from 15.62% to 47.96%, significantly reducing the percentage of amount of time spent slouching from 84.38% to 52.04%, and promoting a healthier back pressure distribution. We also show preliminary survey results on the human perception of the HRI feedback using Owro.

33. Development of an Organisational Framework for the Optimal and Efficient Selection of Actuators

Abstract

Actuators are a vital component, and more often than not one of the limiting factors in robotics and robotics related applications. For the use of actuators in robotics related to humanoids, exoskeletons, prosthetics and orthoses, there are more factors that influence the selected actuator than the basic mechanical outputs, size, backlash, material and power consumption. The main interest within these applications is that because the device is being carried by the human user, thus weight, power consumption and form factor are important selection parameters. The correct selection of an actuator for these applications is a difficult and lengthy process to perform. This paper creates an organizational framework and database for searching the wide range of actuators. This dataset is organized into a design tool that plots the properties of each actuator on varying graphs creating trade-off Ashby charts to rapidly narrow the selection space for designers. A case study is performed to demonstrate the use of this design tool in human-centric actuation applications. The database is utilized in the selection of the ideal actuator based on lines of best fit and a multivariate regression analysis for the optimization of parameters about the required specifications. In addition, a meta-analysis identifies clusters of current actuators, gaps for new developments, and trends. This work provides research direction into developing specific actuators to fit into these trend gaps which offers substantial benefits to humanoids, exoskeletons, prosthetics and orthosis.

40. Prediction-Error Negativity to Assess Singularity Avoidance Strategies in Physical Human-Robot Collaboration

Abstract

In physical human-robot collaboration (pHRC), singularity avoidance strategies are often critical to obtain stable interaction dynamics. It is hypothesised a predictable singularity avoidance strategy is preferred in pHRC as humans tend to maximise predictability when using complex systems. By using an electroencephalogram (EEG), it is possible to assess the predictability of a task through a feature found in event-related potentials (ERP) and called prediction-error negativity (PEN). In this paper, two research questions are addressed. Can a complex pHRC singularity avoidance strategy generate a detectable PEN? Are PEN and human preferences related when comparing different control settings in a singularity avoidance strategy? Fourteen participants compared two different sets of parameters (modes) in a singularity avoidance strategy based on the exponentially damped least-squared (EDLS) method. ERP results are presented in terms of power spectral density (PSD). ERP results were then compared with human preferences to see whether they are related. Results show that the mode that causes PEN is also the one that participants did not like, suggesting that a lack of predictability might have an impact on human preference.

Abstract

Blended learning has received much interest in higher education as a way to increase learning efficiency and effectiveness. By combining face-to-face teaching with technology-enhanced learning through online resources, students can manage their own learning. Blended methods are of particular interest in professional degree programs such as veterinary medicine in which students need the flexibility to undertake intra- and extramural activities to develop the range of competencies required to achieve professional qualification. Yet how veterinary students engage with blended learning activities and whether they perceive the approach as beneficial is unclear. We evaluated blended learning through review of student feedback on a 4-week clinical module in a veterinary degree program. The module combined face-to-face sessions with online resources. Feedback was collected by means of a structured online questionnaire at the end of the module and log data collected as part of a routine teaching audit. The features of blended learning that support and detract from students’ learning experience were explored using quantitative and qualitative methods. Students perceived a benefit from aspects of face-to-face teaching and technology-enhanced learning resources. Face-to-face teaching was appreciated for practical activities, whereas online resources were considered effective for facilitating module organization and allowing flexible access to learning materials. The blended approach was particularly appreciated for clinical skills in which students valued a combination of visual resources and practical activities. Although we identified several limitations with online resources that need to be addressed when constructing blended courses, blended learning shows potential to enhance student-led learning in clinical courses.

44. Towards Smart Green Wall Maintenance and Wallbot Technology

Abstract

The UN forecast of a 3 degree Celsius global temperature increase by 2100 will exacerbate excessive heat. Population growth, urban densification, climate change and global warming contribute to heat waves, which are more intense in high-density environments. With urbanisation, vegetation is replaced by impervious materials which contribute to the Urban Heat Island effect. Concurrently, adverse health outcomes and heat related deaths are increasing and heat stress affects labour productivity. More green infrastructure, such as green walls, is needed to mitigate these effects, however maintenance costs, OH&S issues and perceptions of fire risk inhibit take up. What if these barriers could be overcome by a green wallbot? This research examines the feasibility of integrating smart technology in the form of a Wallbot. The research design comprised two workshops with key stakeholders; comprising green wall designers and installers, green wall maintenance teams, project managers and building owners with green wall installations, horticulture scientists, designers and mechatronics engineers. The aim was to gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting maintenance of green walls on different building types in New South Wales Australia to inform the design of a prototype robot to maintain green walls. The wallbot has great potential to overcome the perceived barriers associated with maintaining green walls and also fire risk and detection. If these barriers are addressed, other locations, such as the sides of motorways or rail corridors, could be used for more green wall installations thereby increasing mitigation of UHI. This innovation would be a welcome addition to smart building technology and property maintenance This is a pilot study and the sample of stakeholders attending the workshops was small, though experienced. The range of green walls is varied and it was decided to focus initially on a specific type of green wall design for the prototype wallbot. Therefore other types, and sizes, of green walls may suit other specifications of wallbot design. To date no robot exists that maintains green walls and this innovative research developed a prototype for trialling maintenance and inspection. To date no robot exists that maintains green walls. No study to date has assessed stakeholder perceptions and developed prototype wallbot technology.

Abstract

The biggest pollution concern today is the overflow of garbage. This creates unhygienic conditions for individuals and creates a bad smell in the environment which in turn leads to the spreading of deadly viruses and human diseases. In order to avoid such issues, smart dustbin control is carried out and implemented with the help of various sensors. Various sensors are used in this system to monitor the level and specific IDs will be given for each dustbin in the cities so that it is easy to recognize which waste bin is complete. The GSM module is used to send a message forupdating the status of the bin to the respective authorities. When the bin level exceeds the threshold limit; the system transmits the reading with the given unique ID. After that, the dustbin will automatically close the door. Once the bins are complete, the user will not be able to access the bins. The status of the bin will be indicated on the LCD display and it will send a message with the help of GSM to the concerned authorities from their venues. So in order to clean the over flowing bins, the concern authority will take immediate action. The rain sensor is used to track rain. The door will automatically gets closed when the rain is detected in order to prevent the water entering inside the bin.
