The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration aims to measure for the first time the shift and width induced on the $1s$ level of kaonic deuterium by the strong interaction. In the preliminary phase to the experiment, a test run using a Helium-4 target was performed to optimize the performance of the full experimental apparatus. This preliminary study highlighted the possibility to measure transition lines coming from intermediate mass kaonic atoms, such as kaonic carbon and kaonic aluminum. In order to measure transitions where strong interaction is manifesting at higher energies, out of the energy range of the SIDDHARTA-2 apparatus, the collaboration is testing a new detector system which exploits a novel compound semiconductor, the Cadmium Zinc Telluride. The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration built a new cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT, CdZnTe)-based X-ray detection system, used for the first time in the DA$\Phi$NE electron-positron collider at INFN-LNF. The aim of this work is to show that these detectors present optimal long- and short-term linearity and stability to perform precise spectroscopic measurements in a collider environment. The spectra used as references for calibration are reported, and the results about the linearity and stability studies are presented. It is also discussed and showed what is the proper function to describe all the effects that alter the Gaussian shape in semiconductors, particularly evident in the CZT case. Good residuals and resolutions were obtained for all the calibrations. In a test run with the source and the collider beam on, it was demonstrated that the calibrations made with beam off are optimal also when the beam is on, and the actual systematics in a physics run were estimated. These promising results show the potentialities of this detector in the high rate environment of a particle collider, and pave the way for the use of CZT detectors in kaonic atoms researches and in accelerators, with applications for particle and nuclear physics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

We explore the transformative potential of SAM 2, a vision foundation model, in advancing gaze estimation and eye tracking technologies. By significantly reducing annotation time, lowering technical barriers through its ease of deployment, and enhancing segmentation accuracy, SAM 2 addresses critical challenges faced by researchers and practitioners. Utilizing its zero-shot segmentation capabilities with minimal user input-a single click per video-we tested SAM 2 on over 14 million eye images from diverse datasets, including virtual reality setups and the world's largest unified dataset recorded using wearable eye trackers. Remarkably, in pupil segmentation tasks, SAM 2 matches the performance of domain-specific models trained solely on eye images, achieving competitive mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) scores of up to 93% without fine-tuning. Sterile neutrinos are a minimal extension of the Standard Model of particle physics and a promising candidate for dark matter if their mass is in the keV-range. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN), equipped with a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector array, the TRISTAN detector, will be capable of searching for these keV-scale sterile neutrinos by investigating the kinematics of the tritium $\beta$-decay. This measurement will be performed after the completion of the neutrino mass measurement campaign. To detect a sterile neutrino signal with a high sensitivity, a profound understanding of the detector response is required. In this work, we report on the characterization of a 7-pixel TRISTAN prototype detector with a laser system. We present the experimental results obtained in high-resolution scans of the detector surface with a focused laser beam and demonstrate how the charge collection and the timing of the signals generated in the detector is related to the detector geometry. Sterile neutrinos are hypothetical particles in the minimal extension of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. They could be viable dark matter candidates if they have a mass in the keV range. The Karlsruhe tritium neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, extended with a silicon drift detector focal plane array (TRISTAN), has the potential to search for keV-scale sterile neutrinos by measuring the kinematics of the tritium $\beta$-decay. The collaboration targets a sensitivity of $10^{-6}$ on the mixing amplitude $\sin^2{\Theta}$. For this challenging target, a precise understanding of the detector response is necessary. In this work, we report on the characterization of electron backscattering from the detector surface, which is one of the main effects that influence the shape of the observed energy spectrum. Measurements were performed with a tandem silicon drift detector system and a custom-designed electron source. The measured detector response and backscattering probability are in good agreement with dedicated backscattering simulations using the Geant4 simulation toolkit.

The ASPECT-BET (An sdd-SPECTrometer for BETa decay studies) project aims to develop a novel technique for the precise measurement of forbidden $\beta$ spectra in the 10 keV - 1 MeV range. This technique uses a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) as the main spectrometer, surrounded, if necessary, by a veto system to reject events with only partial energy deposition in the SDD. Accurate knowledge of the spectrometer's response to electrons is essential to reconstruct the theoretical shape of the $\beta$ spectrum. To compute this response, GEANT4 simulations optimized for low-energy electron interactions are used. In this article, we present the performance of these simulations in reconstructing the electron spectra, measured with SDDs, of a $^{109}$Cd monochromatic source, both in vacuum and in air. The allowed $\beta$ spectrum of a $^{14}$C source is also measured and analyzed, and it is shown that the experimental shape factor commonly used in the literature to reconstruct the measured spectrum is not necessary to explain the spectrum.

The TRISTAN detector is a new detector for electron spectroscopy at the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment. The semiconductor detector utilizes the silicon drift detector technology and will enable the precise measurement of the entire tritium beta decay electron spectrum. Thus, a significant fraction of the parameter space of potential neutrino mass eigenstates in the keV-mass regime can be probed. We developed a custom electron gun based on the effect of thermionic emission to characterize the TRISTAN detector modules with mono-energetic electrons before installation into the KATRIN beamline. The electron gun provides an electron beam with up to 25 keV kinetic energy and an electron rate in the order of 1E5 electrons per second. This manuscript gives an overview of the design and commissioning of the electron gun. In addition, we will shortly discuss a first measurement with the electron gun to characterize the electron response of the TRISTAN detector.

Sterile neutrinos in the keV mass range present a viable candidate for dark matter. They can be detected through single $\beta$ decay, where they cause small spectral distortions. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment aims to search for keV-scale sterile neutrinos with high sensitivity. To achieve this, the KATRIN beamline will be equipped with a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector focal plane array named TRISTAN. In this study, we present the performance of a TRISTAN detector module, a component of the eventual 9-module system. Our investigation encompasses spectroscopic aspects such as noise performance, energy resolution, linearity, and stability.

Sterile neutrinos are a minimal extension of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. A laboratory-based approach to search for this particle is via tritium beta-decay, where a sterile neutrino would cause a kink-like spectral distortion. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment extended by a multi-pixel Silicon Drift Detector system has the potential to reach an unprecedented sensitivity to the keV-scale sterile neutrino in a lab-based experiment. The new detector system combines good spectroscopic performance with a high rate capability. In this work, we report about the characterization of charge-sharing between pixels and the commissioning of a 47-pixel prototype detector in a MAC-E filter.

A large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs) system has been developed by the SIDDHARTA2 collaboration for high precision light kaonic atoms X-ray spectroscopy at the DA{\Phi}NE collider of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare - Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The SDDs geometry and electric field configuration, combined with their read-out electronics, make these devices suitable to perform high precision light kaonic atoms spectroscopy measurements in the high background of the DA{\Phi}NE collider. This work presents the spectroscopic response of the SDDs system during the kaonic helium first exotic atoms run of SIDDHARTA-2, preliminary to the kaonic deuterium data taking campaign, Comment: submitted to Condensed Matter (MDPI) for special issue "High Precision X-ray Measurements 2021"

Silicon Drift Detectors, widely employed in high-resolution and high-rate X-ray applications, are considered here with interest also for electron detection. The accurate measurement of the tritium beta decay is the core of the TRISTAN (TRitium Investigation on STerile to Active Neutrino mixing) project. This work presents the characterization of a single-pixel SDD detector with a mono-energetic electron beam obtained from a Scanning Electron Microscope. The suitability of the SDD to detect electrons, in the energy range spanning from few keV to tens of keV, is demonstrated. Experimental measurements reveal a strong effect of the detector's entrance window structure on the observed energy response. A detailed detector model is therefore necessary to reconstruct the spectrum of an unknown beta-decay source.

The KATRIN (Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino) experiment investigates the energetic endpoint of the tritium beta-decay spectrum to determine the effective mass of the electron anti-neutrino. The collaboration has reported a first mass measurement result at this TAUP-2019 conference. The TRISTAN project aims at detecting a keV-sterile neutrino signature by measuring the entire tritium beta-decay spectrum with an upgraded KATRIN system. One of the greatest challenges is to handle the high signal rates generated by the strong activity of the KATRIN tritium source while maintaining a good energy resolution. Therefore, a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector and read-out system are being designed to handle rates of about 100 Mcps with an energy resolution better than 300 eV (FWHM). This report presents succinctly the KATRIN experiment, the TRISTAN project, then the results of the first 7-pixels prototype measurement campaign and finally describes the construction of the first TRISTAN module composed of 166 SDD-pixels as well as its implementation in KATRIN experiment.

Electron spectrometry is traditionally challenging due to the difficulty of correctly reconstructing the original energy of the detected electrons. Silicon Drift Detectors, extensively used for X-ray spectrometry, are a promising technology for the precise measurement of electrons energy. The ability to correctly model the detector entrance window response to the energy deposited by electrons is a critical aspect of this application. We hereby describe a MonteCarlo-based approach to this problem, together with characterization and validation measurements performed with electron beams from a Scanning Electron Microscope., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

This project is focused on the development of a novel strategy for the precise measurement of beta decay energy spectra. The exact determination of beta spectra has wide implications in the particle and nuclear physics fields: from sterile neutrino searches \cite{Adhikari 2016} to validation of nuclear models of interest for double beta decay searches \cite{Suhonen 2017}, to reactor neutrino experiments. The experimental strategy is focused on the mitigation of the systematic uncertainty in the determination of the spectral shape related to the energy response of the detector. The plan is to use Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), exploiting their excellent energy resolution and response uniformity, the thin dead layer and the fast signal that allows high rate operations. A complete modeling of SDDs response to the interaction of beta particles via numerical simulations, validated with dedicated measurements, aims at identifying and canceling the detector-related systematics. Similar attention will be devoted to the integration of beta radioactive sources that preserve the energy information carried by the emitted electrons, and to a veto system with a full solid angle coverage to intercept any escaping particle potentially carrying a fraction of the original electron energy.

One way to search for sterile neutrinos in a laboratory-based experiment is via tritium-beta decay, where the new neutrino mass eigenstate would manifest itself as a kink-like distortion of the $\beta$-decay spectrum. The objective of the TRISTAN project is to extend the KATRIN setup with a new multi-pixel silicon drift detector system to search for a keV-scale sterile neutrino signal. In this paper we describe the requirements of such a new detector, and present first characterization measurement results obtained with a 7-pixel prototype system.

Propagation of light beams through scattering or multimode systems may lead to randomization of the spatial coherence of the light. Although information is not lost, its recovery requires a coherent interferometric reconstruction of the original signals, which have been scrambled into the modes of the scattering system. Here, we show that we can automatically unscramble four optical beams that have been arbitrarily mixed in a multimode waveguide, undoing the scattering and mixing between the spatial modes through a mesh of silicon photonics Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Using embedded transparent detectors and a progressive tuning algorithm, the mesh self-configures automatically and reset itself after significantly perturbing the mixing, without turning off the beams. We demonstrate the recovery of four separate 10 Gbits/s information channels, with residual cross-talk between beams of -20dB. This principle of self-configuring and self-resetting in optical systems should be applicable in a wide range of optical applications., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures

The increasing complexity of photonic integrated circuits requires the possibility to monitor the state of the circuit in order to stabilize the working point against environmental fluctuations or to perform reliable reconfiguration procedures. Although InP technologies can naturally integrate high-quality photodiodes, their use as tap monitors necessarily affects the circuit response and is restricted to few units per chip. They are hence unsuited for very large circuits, where transparent power monitors become key components. In this paper we present the implementation of a ContactLess Integrated Photonic Probe (CLIPP) realizing a non invasive integrated light monitor on InP-based devices. We describe an innovative vertical scheme of the CLIPP monitor which exploits the back side of the chip as a common electrode, thus enabling a reduction of the device footprint and a simplification of the electrical connectivity. We characterize the response of the CLIPP and demonstrate its functionality as power monitor. Lastly, we provide a direct demonstration that CLIPP monitor allows to access more accurate information on the working point of photonic integrated circuits compared to conventional external or integrated photodetectors.
