Stochastic Langevin dynamics has been traditionally used as a tool to describe non-equilibrium processes. When utilized in systems with collective modes, traditional Langevin dynamics relaxes all modes indiscriminately, regardless of their wavelength. We propose a generalization of Langevin dynamics that can capture a differential coupling between collective modes and the bath, by introducing spatial correlations in the random forces. This allows modeling the electronic subsystem in a metal as a generalized Langevin bath endowed with a concept of locality, greatly improving the capabilities of the two-temperature model. The specific form proposed here for the spatial correlations produces physical wavevector- and polarization-dependency of the relaxation produced by the electron-phonon coupling in a solid. We show that the resulting model can be used for describing the path to equilibration of ions and electrons, and also as a thermostat to sample the equilibrium canonical ensemble. By extension, the family of models presented here can be applied in general to any dense system, solids, alloys and dense plasmas. As an example, we apply the model to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of an electron-ion two-temperature Ni crystal., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

- Abstract
Background: Despite the well-known efficacy of anti-COVID-19 vaccines in preventing morbidity and mortality, several vaccinated individuals are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection, which might require hospitalisation. This multicentre, observational, and retrospective study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated patients, both hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2 infection in 3 major hospitals in Northern Italy. Methods: Data collection was retrospective, and paper and electronic medical records of adult patients with a diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infection were pseudo-anonymised and analysed. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals were manually paired, using a predetermined matching criterion (similar age, gender, and date of hospitalisation). Demographic, clinical, treatment, and outcome data were compared between groups differing by vaccination status using Pearson's Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Moreover, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the impact of vaccination status on ICU admission or intra-hospital mortality. Results: Data from 360 patients were collected. Vaccinated patients presented with a higher prevalence of relevant comorbidities, like kidney replacement therapy or haematological malignancy, despite a milder clinical presentation at the first evaluation. Non-vaccinated patients required intensive care more often than their vaccinated counterparts (8.8% vs. 1.7%, p = 0.002). Contrariwise, no difference in intra-hospital mortality was observed between the two groups (19% vs. 20%, p = 0.853). These results were confirmed by multivariable logistic regressions, which showed that vaccination was significantly associated with decreased risk of ICU admission (aOR=0.172, 95%CI: 0.039–0.542, p = 0.007), but not of intra-hospital mortality (aOR=0.996, 95%CI: 0.582–1.703, p = 0.987). Conclusions: This study provides real-world data on vaccinated patients hospitalised wit

In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the structural, electronic, and optical properties of an $m$-plane (In,Ga)N/GaN quantum well structure grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. The sample has been structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and 3D atom probe tomography. The optical properties of the sample have been studied by photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL spectroscopy, and polarized PL excitation spectroscopy. The PL spectrum consisted of a very broad PL line with a high degree of optical linear polarization. To understand the optical properties we have performed atomistic tight-binding calculations, and based on our initial atom probe tomography data, the model includes the effects of strain and built-in field variations arising from random alloy fluctuations. Furthermore, we included Coulomb effects in the calculations. Our microscopic theoretical description reveals strong hole wave function localization effects due to random alloy fluctuations, resulting in strong variations in ground state energies and consequently the corresponding transition energies. This is consistent with the experimentally observed broad PL peak. Furthermore, when including Coulomb contributions in the calculations we find strong exciton localization effects which explain the form of the PL decay transients. Additionally, the theoretical results confirm the experimentally observed high degree of optical linear polarization. Overall, the theoretical data are in very good agreement with the experimental findings, highlighting the strong impact of the microscopic alloy structure on the optoelectronic properties of these systems., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

We present a computational scheme for orbital-free density functional theory (OFDFT) that simultaneously provides access to all-electron values and preserves the OFDFT linear scaling as a function of the system size. Using the projector augmented-wave method (PAW) in combination with real-space methods we overcome some obstacles faced by other available implementation schemes. Specifically, the advantages of using the PAW method are two fold. First, PAW reproduces all-electron values offering freedom in adjusting the convergence parameters and the atomic setups allow tuning the numerical accuracy per element. Second, PAW can provide a solution to some of the convergence problems exhibited in other OFDFT implementations based on Kohn-Sham codes. Using PAW and real-space methods, our orbital-free results agree with the reference all-electron values with a mean absolute error of 10~meV and the number of iterations required by the self-consistent cycle is comparable to the KS method. The comparison of all-electron and pseudopotential bulk modulus and lattice constant reveal an enormous difference, demonstrating that in order to assess the performance of OFDFT functionals it is necessary to use implementations that obtain all-electron values. The proposed combination of methods is the most promising route currently available. We finally show that a parametrized kinetic energy functional can give lattice constants and bulk moduli comparable in accuracy to those obtained by the KS PBE method, exemplified with the case of diamond., Comment: accepted in Journal of Chemical Physics

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented of the band gap of AlInN, confirming the breakdown of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) for the conduction and valence band edges. Composition dependent bowing parameters for these quantities are extracted. Additionally, composition dependent band offsets for GaN/AlInN systems are provided. We show that local strain and built-in fields affect the band edges significantly, leading to optical polarization switching at much lower In composition than expected from a VCA approach., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We demonstrate that cation-related localized states strongly perturb the band structure of $\text{Al}_{1-x}\text{In}_x$N leading to a strong band gap bowing at low In content. Our first-principles calculations show that In-related localized states are formed both in the conduction and the valence band in $\text{Al}_{1-x}\text{In}_x$N for low In composition, $x$, and that these localized states dominate the evolution of the band structure with increasing $x$. Therefore, the commonly used assumption of a single composition-independent bowing parameter breaks down when describing the evolution both of the conduction and of the valence band edge in $\text{Al}_{1-x}\text{In}_x$N., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Diagnoses of primary malignant mesenchymal brain tumors are a challenge for pathologists. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old man with a primary brain tumor, histologically diagnosed as a high-grade glioma, not otherwise specified (NOS). The patient underwent two neurosurgeries in several months, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We re-examined the tumor samples by methylome profiling. Methylome analysis revealed an epi-signature typical of a primary intracranial sarcoma, DICER1-mutant, an extremely rare tumor. The diagnosis was confirmed by DNA sequencing that revealed a mutation in DICER1 exon 25. DICER1 mutations were not found in the patient's blood cells, thus excluding an inherited DICER1 syndrome. The methylome profile of the DICER1 mutant sarcoma was then compared with that of a high-grade glioma, a morphologically similar tumor type. We found that several relevant regions were differentially methylated. Taken together, we report the morphological, epigenetic, and genetic characterization of the sixth described case of an adult primary intracranial sarcoma, DICER1-mutant to-date. Furthermore, this case report underscores the importance of methylome analysis to refine primary brain tumor diagnosis and to avoid misdiagnosis among morphologically similar subtypes.

- Abstract
Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presents an urgent threat to global health. Prediction models that accurately estimate mortality risk in hospitalized patients could assist medical staff in treatment and allocating limited resources. Aims: To externally validate two promising previously published risk scores that predict in-hospital mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods: Two prospective cohorts were available; a cohort of 1028 patients admitted to one of nine hospitals in Lombardy, Italy (the Lombardy cohort) and a cohort of 432 patients admitted to a hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands (the Leiden cohort). The endpoint was in-hospital mortality. All patients were adult and tested COVID-19 PCR-positive. Model discrimination and calibration were assessed. Results: The C-statistic of the 4C mortality score was good in the Lombardy cohort (0.85, 95CI: 0.82−0.89) and in the Leiden cohort (0.87, 95CI: 0.80−0.94). Model calibration was acceptable in the Lombardy cohort but poor in the Leiden cohort due to the model systematically overpredicting the mortality risk for all patients. The C-statistic of the CURB-65 score was good in the Lombardy cohort (0.80, 95CI: 0.75−0.85) and in the Leiden cohort (0.82, 95CI: 0.76−0.88). The mortality rate in the CURB-65 development cohort was much lower than the mortality rate in the Lombardy cohort. A similar but less pronounced trend was found for patients in the Leiden cohort. Conclusion: Although performances did not differ greatly, the 4C mortality score showed the best performance. However, because of quickly changing circumstances, model recalibration may be necessary before using the 4C mortality score.

- Abstract
The Iberian pig is a native Spanish breed that is widely distributed in the dehesa areas of the south-western peninsula, where it plays a fundamental role in the conservation of the ecosystem. The objective of the present study was to characterize different parameters indicative of seminal quality in three varieties of Iberian pigs. For this purpose, boards of the Retinto del Andévalo, Torbiscal and Negro de los Pedroches varieties were used, analyzing 16 samples per animal, and evaluating the variables volume, concentration, morphology, motility and kinematic parameters in each ejaculate. According to the results obtained, significant differences were observed for all the variables studied except for curvilinear velocity (VCL) and straightness index (STR). In relation to sperm volume, significant differences were observed between boards, being the board nº 2 of the Retinto del Andévalo variety who presented the highest value (89.4 ± 15.39 mL). Regarding sperm concentration, the specimen of the Negro de los Pedroches variety reports the highest mean concentration (467.6 ± 71.84 x 106 spz/mL), being also the one with the highest percentage of morphoanomalies. Finally, total and progressive motility values were higher in the boar nº 1 of the Retinto del Andévalo variety (91.98 ± 2.86% and 61.67 ± 5.92%, respectively). In conclusion, the seminal quality observed in the boars of the Iberian pig breed in the present study is suitable according to the reference values for the species for it use in assisted reproduction programs, with the exception of the specimen of the Negro de Pedroches variety, which has a high number of morphoanomalies., El cerdo Ibérico es una raza autóctona española que se encuentra ampliamente distribuida en las zonas de dehesas del suroeste peninsular donde juega un papel fundamental en la conservación de dicho ecosistema.

- Abstract
Cognitive reserve (CR) allows individuals to maintain cognitive functionality even in the presence of pathologies. The compensation hypothesis suggests that CR plays an indirect role between age and cognitive decline, contrasting the negative effect of ageing on cognition. We test this hypothesis in an unselected and consecutively enrolled sample of memory clinic attendees (n = 134) who completed the CR Index questionnaire and three neuropsychological tests assessing global cognition (MMSE, FAB, CDT). Participants were divided into two groups based on standard diagnostic criteria (DSM-5): those who were cognitively impaired (n = 92) and those who were preserved (n = 42). A principal component analysis was used to extract a composite measure of global cognitive functioning from the three neuropsychological tests, and mediation analysis was used to examine the relationship between CR, age and global cognitive functioning in the two groups. Results revealed that: (i) age had a significant direct negative effect on the global cognitive score in both groups; (ii) the three socio-behavioural proxies of CR together suppress the direct negative relationship between age and global cognitive score in cognitively impaired patients but not in cognitively preserved participants. This study confirms the association between CR, age and cognition and allows us to validate its role in a population with cognitive impairment and extend findings to a low-to-middle educated population. These results hold important implications for public health and wellness promotion, emphasising the beneficial role of maintaining healthy and active physical, cognitive and social lifestyles.

- Abstract
De Santis et al. (EPSL 2017) detected that for the first time in Swarm satellite data some magnetic field anomalies associated with the 2015 Nepal M7.8 earthquake, with similar S-shapes for the cumulative number of satellite anomalies and earthquakes, providing an empirical proof on the lithospheric origin of the anomalies. Following the same approach, De Santis et al. (Atmosph. 2019) obtained other promising results for 12 earthquakes in the range M6.1-8.3, in the framework of the ESA funded SAFE (SwArm For Earthquake study) Project. Then, almost five years of Swarm magnetic field and electron density data were analysed with a Superposed Epoch and Space approach finding a robust correlation with major worldwide M5.5+ earthquakes (De Santis et al. Sc.Rep. 2019). The work also confirmed the Rikitake (1987) law, initially proposed for ground data: the larger the magnitude of the impending earthquake, the longer the precursory time of anomaly occurrences. An analogous analysis was also applied in the framework of the ASI funded Limadou-Science Project to the Chinese Seismo-Electromagnetic satellite (CSES) electron density providing similar results (De Santis et al. N.Cim. 2021). Marchetti et al. (Rem.Sens. 2022) confirmed the same result over a longer time series , i.e. 8 years, of Swarm satellite data. Furthermore, we demonstrated in several case studies (e.g. Marchetti et al. JAES 2019, Akhoondzadeh et al. Adv.S.R. 2019; De Santis et al. Fr.E.Sc. 2020) that the integration of CSES and Swarm data with other measurements from ground an atmosphere reveals a chain of processes before many mainshocks., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

REFLECTION high energy electron diffraction , *NITROGEN plasmas , *MOLECULAR beam epitaxy , *REACTIVE nitrogen species - Abstract
We report on the optical characterization of a nitrogen plasma source based on radiofrequency (RF) used to grow III-nitride materials by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to study the nitrogen plasma response as a function of the RF power applied and the flow rate of molecular nitrogen. Analysis of the intensities of spectral signals assigned to atomic and molecular species and the ratio of these intensities is performed in detail. The OES results show that the plasma source studied is sensitive to the RF power applied to produce an atomic nitrogen signal, while varying the incoming flow impacts the signal of metastable nitrogen molecules; this outcome allows for the determination of conditions under which certain types of nitrogen species are favored over others. InN films were grown on AlN-buffered Si(111) substrates by MBE under different plasma operational parameters, where, according to the OES studies, atomic nitrogen or excited molecular nitrogen is favored in the plasma. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction techniques were employed to characterize the InN samples. It is found that the surface morphology of the InN films is highly sensitive to the plasma conditions. A transition in the growth mode from smooth compact films to coalesced islands and columnar structures is observed when the dominant reactive species is atomic nitrogen or excited molecular nitrogen. The results of the characterization are discussed and correlated with the reactive nitrogen species present in the plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article, published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, discusses the use of Doppler ultrasound to detect intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) in pregnant women. The study analyzed 1600 deliveries over 12 months and found that a normal uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) was associated with a lower risk of IUGR. However, an abnormal PI was linked to an increased risk of low birthweight, but not an increase in admissions to the Neonatal Unit. The findings suggest that the PI of the uterine arteries can be a useful predictor of fetal growth restriction. [Extracted from the article]
