Abstract

Abstract Large explosive volcanic eruptions from island arcs pour pyroclastic currents into marine basins, impacting ecosystems and generating tsunamis that threaten coastal communities and infrastructures. Risk assessments require robust records of such highly hazardous events, which is challenging as most of the products lie buried under the sea. Here we report the discovery by IODP Expedition 398 of a giant rhyolitic pumice deposit emplaced 520 ± 10 ky ago at water depths of 200 to 1000 m during a high-intensity, shallow submarine eruption of ancestral Santorini Volcano. Pyroclastic currents discharged into the sea transformed into turbidity currents and slurries, forming a >89 ± 8 km3 volcaniclastic megaturbidite up to 150 m thick in the surrounding marine basins, while breaching of the sea surface by the eruption column laid down veneers of ignimbrite on three islands. The eruption is one of the largest recorded on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, and highlights the hazards from submarine explosive eruptions.

Abstract

Abstract The construction of ocean island basaltic volcanoes consists of a succession of eruptions, intrusions, and metamorphism. These events are often temporally ill‐constrained because the most widely used radiometric dating methods applicable to mafic volcanic rocks (K‐Ar or 40Ar/39Ar on whole rock or groundmass) are prone to inaccuracy when applied to slowly cooled, altered, or vesicular and aphyric products. Here, we adopt a multitechnique geochronology approach (including zircon U‐Pb, phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar, zircon and apatite (U‐Th)/He, and zircon double‐dating) to demonstrate its efficacy when applied to basaltic volcanoes. Taking the main volcano of Réunion Island (Piton des Neiges) as a case study, we establish the time of the major plutonic, metamorphic, and explosive events that had resisted previous dating attempts. We document four stages of pluton emplacement and metamorphism at 2,200–2,000 ka, 1,414 ± 8 ka, 665 ± 78 ka, and 150–110 ka, all coinciding with volcanism revival after quiescent intervals. We also date a major Plinian eruption at 188.2 ± 10.4 ka, coeval with the formation age of a large caldera, and, finally, we constrain the last eruption of Piton des Neiges to 27 ka, revising a previous estimate of 12 ka. By resolving several conundrums of Réunion's geological history, our multitechnique geochronology approach reveals that endogenous growth of a volcanic island proceeds as pulses at the beginning of renewed volcanism. We also demonstrate that crosschecking eruptions ages by diversified dating techniques is important to better assess the timing and recurrence of basaltic volcanic activity, with implications for hazard prediction.

Abstract

A multichannel seismic reflection profile acquired during the SISMAORE cruise (2021) provides the first in-depth image of the submarine volcanic edifice, named Fani Maore, that formed 50 km east of Mayotte Island (Comoros Archipelago) in 2018–2019. This new edifice sits on a ∼140 m thick sedimentary layer, which is above a major, volcanic layer up to ∼1 km thick and extends over 120 km along the profile. This volcanic unit is made of several distinct seismic facies that indicate successive volcanic phases. We interpret this volcanic layer as witnessing the main phase of construction of the Mayotte Island volcanic edifice. A ∼2.2–2.5 km thick sedimentary unit is present between this volcanic layer and the top of the crust. A complex magmatic feeder system is observed within this unit, composed of saucer-shape sills and seal bypass systems. The deepest tip of this volcanic layer lies below the top-Oligocene seismic horizon, indicating that the volcanism ofMayotte Island likely began around 26.5Ma, earlier than previously assumed., Un profil de sismique réflexion multitrace acquis lors de la campagne océanographique SISMAORE (2021) apporte la première image en profondeur du volcan sous-marin Fani Maore, qui s’est formé à 50 km à l’est de l’île de Mayotte (archipel des Comores) en 2018–2019. Ce nouvel édifice repose sur une première couche sédimentaire d’environ 140 m d’épaisseur au-dessus d’une couche volcanique majeure épaisse de 1 km et qui s’étend sur 120 km le long du profil. Cette dernière unité volcanique est constituée de plusieurs faciès sismiques distincts qui indiquent des phases volcaniques successives. Nous interprétons cette couche volcanique comme le témoin de la phase principale de construction de l’édifice volcanique de l’île de Mayotte. 6. Vesicle Morphologies of Popping Rocks: Implication for degassing processes during the 2018-2021 Mayotte submarine eruption

Abstract

Between July 2018 and January 2021, the submarine eruption of Fani Maoré volcano, offshore Mayotte (Mozambique Channel), has been unprecedentedly well monitored with several oceanic cruises that provided a large number of samples (obtained by sea floor dredges) from the deep volcanic activity (3,300 m). The unique spatial and temporal sampling of the main edifice, flanks and distal ponded lava flows allows us to precisely track the vesicle morphologies and syn-eruptive degassing processes. This is an exceptional situation as deep-submarine eruptions remain poorly known due to the limited access to deep sites. We quantified textural parameters such as porosity, vesicle connectivity and vesicle size distributions (VSD) of these unusually gas-rich lavas, also known as popping rocks. Three different textures can be distinguished. The most vesicular (average of 35% vesicles) lava fragments display a unimodal distribution, and large vesicles are almost absent. Samples with intermediate porosities (average of 24% vesicles), show a bimodal distribution, with a dominant mode of large vesicles and a subordinate mode of small vesicles. Denser samples have the lowest porosity (average of 18% vesicles) characterized by a bimodal distribution, with a dominant mode of small vesicles. Samples with the highest and intermediate porosities were collected at lava flows emitted from the main eruptive vent during the early phase of the volcanic activity between July 2018 and August 2019. Both textures contain a population of small vesicles centred around the same mode suggesting a common origin, mostly related to the sudden gas-rich magma decompression. By contrast, the population of large vesicles is only present in pillow fragments located at the edge of the lava flows. These vesicles may be the result of bubble growth and coalescence during lava flow emplacement. Finally, the densest samples are only observed in lava flows that originated from a secondary fissure located on the Northwest, during the late phase of the volcanic activity between August 2019 and January 2021. This very poorly vesicular lava may result from a different magma batch (also supported by petrographic study) that was more degassed. Comparison with existing dataset from surface basaltic lava flows also revealed that most of our samples contain a significant amount of isolated vesicles (up to 18 vol%) emphasizing that popping rocks are able to retain gas at seafloor pressures. The detailed analysis of pillow lava texture allow us to make a clear distinction between lava flows erupted by Fani Maoré before and after August 2019. Our results also provide information on the eruption dynamics such as vesiculation processes and could be used to better constrain the rheology of the basanite melt for the Fani Maoré eruption.

Abstract

Following an unprecedented seismic activity that started in May 2018, a new volcanic edifice, Fani Maoré, was constructed on the ocean floor 50 km east of the island of Mayotte (Indian Ocean). This volcano is the latest addition to a submarine volcanic chain characterized by an alkaline basanite-to-phonolite magmatic differentiation trend. Here, we performed viscosity measurements on five silicate melts representative of the East-Mayotte Volcanic Chain compositional trend: two basanites from Fani Maoré, one tephri-phonolite and two phonolites from different parts of the volcanic chain. A concentric cylinder viscometer was employed at super-liquidus conditions between 1500 K and 1855 K, and a creep apparatus was used for measuring the viscosity of the undercooled melts close to the glass transition temperature in the air. At super-liquidus temperatures, basanites have the lowest viscosity (0.11 to 0.99 log10 Pa⸱s), phonolites the highest (1.75 to 3.10 log10 Pa⸱s), while the viscosity of the tephri-phonolite falls in between (0.89 - 1.97 log10 Pa⸱s). Viscosity measurements at undercooled temperatures have only been performed for one phonolite melt because Raman spectroscopy showed nanolites within the basanite and tephri-phonolite glass samples. The phonolite has a viscosity of 10.19 to 12.30 log10 Pa⸱s at 1058 to 986 K. Comparison with existing empirical models revealed discrepancies up to 2.0 log units with our experimental measurements. This emphasizes (i) the lack of data falling along the alkaline basanite-to-phonolite magmatic differentiation trend to calibrate empirical models, and (ii) the complexity of modeling the variations in viscosity as a function of temperature and chemical composition for alkaline magmas. The presented new measurements indicate that, at eruptive temperatures between 1050 °C and 1150 °C, the anhydrous, crystal- and bubble-free basanite melt is very fluid with a viscosity around 2.6 log10 Pa⸱s whereas the anhydrous phonolite crystal- and bubble-free melt at eruptive temperatures ranging from 800 to 1000 °C has a viscosity around 6 - 10 log10 Pa⸱s. These new viscosity measurements are essential to define eruptive models and to better understand the storage, transport and ascent dynamics of Comoros Archipelago magmas, and of alkaline magmas in general, from the source to the surface.

Abstract

International audience; Unlike subaerial volcanic activity, deep submarine eruptions are difficult to detect, observe and monitor. The objective of this paper is to describe a large and complex volcanic region, named the Horseshoe area, recently discovered at 1500 m below sea level on the eastern upper submarine slope of Mayotte Island. The area is crucial because, since 2018, it has experienced an exceptionally deep seismic activity associated with the ongoing submarine eruption that formed a new volcanic edifice, Fani Maoré, about 40 km to the east. We present the results of a multiscale study, based on high-resolution bathymetry and in-situ seafloor observations carried out with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and deep-towed camera systems. In-situ imagery provides ground-truth for the geological interpretation of seafloor textures mapped with the bathymetry. The combination of both datasets allows us to discuss the nature of the volcanic structures and to propose a relative chronology of previous eruptive events in the Horseshoe area. Based on our analyses, we propose the following chronology: (a) the emplacement of a large explosive volcanic cone, the Horseshoe edifice, (b) the later collapse of this edifice that resulted in the formation of an elongated, 2 km wide horseshoe-shaped depression, crosscutting older hummocky lava flows, (c) the development of an E–W eruptive fissure associated with numerous explosive craters, east of the Horseshoe edifice, and (d) late volcanism emanating from the rim of the horseshoe-shaped depression that fed elongated thin lava flows both towards and away from the depression. While all volcanic features mapped at the Horseshoe area were emplaced prior to the 2018 eruption, our study shows that this region has still been volcanically active in the recent past. Our results thus document a complex geological history at small spatial scales involved in the construction of major submarine edifices, and that are controlled by volcano-tectonic processes at larger scales.

Abstract

Geophysical and geological data from the North Mozambique Channel acquired during the 2020–2021 SISMAORE oceanographic cruise reveal a corridor of recent volcanic and tectonic features 200 km wide and 600 km long within and north of Comoros Archipelago. Here we identify and describe two major submarine tectono-volcanic fields: the N’Droundé province oriented N160°E north of Grande-Comore Island, and the Mwezi province oriented N130°E north of Anjouan and Mayotte Islands. The presence of popping basaltic rocks sampled in the Mwezi province suggests post-Pleistocene volcanic activity. The geometry and distribution of recent structures observed on the seafloor are consistent with a current regional dextral transtensional context. Their orientations change progressively from west to east (N160°E, N130°E, EW). The volcanism in the western part appears to be influenced by the pre-existing structural fabric of the Mesozoic crust. The 200 km-wide and 600 km-long tectono-volcanic corridor underlines the incipient Somalia–Lwandle dextral lithospheric plate boundary between the East-African Rift System and Madagascar., Des données géophysiques et géologiques ont été acquises lors de la campagne océanographique SISMAORE (2020–2021). Deux grands champs tectono-volcaniques sous-marins ont été découverts tout le long et principalement au nord de l’archipel des Comores : la province N’Droundé orientée N160°E au nord de Grande-Comore, et la province Mwezi orientée N130°E au nord d’Anjouan-Mayotte où des roches basaltiques de type popping-rocks suggèrent une activité volcanique possiblement actuelle à pléistocène. La géométrie et la distribution des structures récentes sont cohérentes avec un contexte régional actuel transtensif dextre. Leurs orientations évoluent d’Ouest en Est (N160°E, N130°E, EW), suggérant pour la partie occidentale, une mise en place du volcanisme influencée par la structuration crustale préexistante. Le corridor tectono-volcanique de 200 km de large et de 600 km de long dessine une limite de plaque lithosphérique Somalie-Lwandle immature en décrochante dextre entre le système du rift est-africain et Madagascar.

Abstract

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Deep-sea submarine eruptions are the least known type of volcanic activity, due to the difficulty of detecting, monitoring, and sampling them. Following an intense seismic crisis in May 2018, a large submarine effusive eruption offshore the island of Mayotte (Indian Ocean) has extruded at least 6.5 km3 of magma to date, making it the largest monitored submarine eruption as well as the largest effusive eruption on Earth since Iceland's 1783 Laki eruption. This volcano is located along a WNW-ESE volcanic ridge, extending from the island of Petite Terre (east side of Mayotte) to about 3,500 m of water depth. We present a detailed petrological and geochemical description of the erupted lavas sampled by the MAYOBS 1, 2, and 4 cruises between May and July 2019 and use these to infer characteristics and changes through time for the whole magmatic system and its dynamics from the source to the surface. These cruises provide an exceptional time-series of bathymetric, textural, petrological, and geochemical data for the 2018-2019 eruptive period, and hence bring an invaluable opportunity to better constrain the evolution of magma storage and transfer processes during a long-lived submarine eruption. Integrating the petrological signatures of dredged lavas with geophysical data, we show that the crystal-poor and gas-rich evolved basanitic magma was stored at mantle depth (>37 km) in a large (≥10 km3) reservoir and that the eruption was tectonically triggered. As the eruption proceeded, a decrease in ascent rate and/or a pathway change resulted in the incorporation of preexisting differentiated magma stored at a shallower level. Magma transfer from the deep mantle reservoir is syn-eruptive, as indicated by transfer times estimated from diffusion in zoned olivine crystals that are much shorter than the total eruption duration. Our petrological model has important hazard implications concerning the rapid and stealthy awakening of a deep gas-rich magma reservoirs that can produce unusually high output rates and long-lived eruption. Sudden tapping of large crystal poor reservoirs may be the trigger mechanism for other rarely witnessed high-volume (>1 km3) effusive events.

Abstract

International audience; This study aims to decipher the spatio-temporal chronology of tectonic processes leading to ocean widening at a slow-spreading oceanic ridge axis, involving mantle and gabbro exhumation and volcanism. Structural and petrographic studies of deformed lithologies were performed on peridotites, gabbros and basalts from the Chenaillet ophiolite (Alps, France). Inversion of fault-slip data reveals N030° and N060° σ3 paleostress trends. The dominant N030° extension, is consistent with the NNW-SSE direction of volcano feeder-dykes and ENE dipping low-angle normal faults crosscutting the mantle. The N060° extension accords with the mantle dome structure formation to the east. Low-angle faults intersect roots of volcanoes that thus belong to their hanging walls. Hydrothermalism is contemporaneous with or postdates low-angle faulting. A feeder-dyke major virgation northwards, synchronous with eruptions, suggests a dextral transform fault consistent with a N120° σ2. Oceanic expansion mechanisms are clarified. At the surface, magma eruption occurs along on-axis active high-angle normal faults, their footwalls enabling mantle exhumation. At depth, off-axis high-angle faults become low-angle faults as they spread at shallow level. With westward drift of the lithosphere, the uppermost levels of the ridge shift westward faster, such that volcanoes move to an off-axis position while their roots are cut by low-angle faults.

Abstract

International audience; At oceanic spreading centers, the interactions between the igneous system that builds the crust, and the hydrothermal system that cools it govern the plumbing system architecture and its thermokinetic evolution. At fast-spreading centers, most of those interactions occur around the axial magma lens (AML) that feeds the upper crust, and possibly part of the underlying mushy igneous reservoir. Heat extracted from crystallizing AML is transferred through a conductive boundary layer to the overlying hydrothermal system. Quantifying the AML physical and thermal evolutions and its interactions with hydrothermal system is therefore essential to understand oceanic accretion. Those general issues were the rationale of drilling ICDP OmanDP Hole GT3A, and we present herein the geological, structural, and petrological data that were used as a site survey to select its location. GT3 area enables observations in three dimensions of fossilized AMLs and overlying dikes. The new field data and corresponding mineral compositions are used together with thermokinetic and thermodynamic models to deliver an integrated dynamic model for the AML / hydrothermal system interactions. Results attest that the isotropic gabbro interval is composite, with gabbro bodies intruding and reheating both gabbros and dikes (up to 1040°C). We show that AMLs should be considered as transient igneous bodies that likely crystallize from primitive MORBs in decades, releasing heat to the intruded hosts, and feeding high temperature vents on the seafloor. We show for the first time that the thermal gradient recorded in AML roof is consistent with the heat fluxes reported at active hydrothermal vents.

Abstract

International audience; Since 2018, the submarine east flank of Mayotte Island (Comoros archipelago) is the site of a major eruption located at 3.5 km depth bsl on a WNW-ESE volcanic ridge. Samples brought by oceanographic cruises carried out to monitor this seismo-volcanic crisis indicate that this volcanic ridge is built by a bimodal sodic alkaline magmatic series that includes basanites and phonolites. A petrological study of dredged samples allowed us to image the magmatic system feeding the volcanic ridge and to determine the link between basanitic and phonolitic magmas. The magmatic system feeding the volcanic ridge comprises multiple levels of magma storage. Basanitic magmas generated at 80–100 km mantle depth are stored in two or more deep reservoirs (≥ 37 km) and then in shallower basanitic and phonolitic lenses located close to the Moho interface before rising the surface. This study identifies three possible scenarios: (1) the deep basanitic magma rises directly and quickly to the surface from the deep mantle reservoir (as is currently happening 60 km offshore), (2) the basanitic magma stalls in a shallower reservoir near the Moho before resuming its ascent toward the surface and erupting as porphyritic basanite, (3) the basanitic magma stops and evolves to phonolite in these sub-crustal reservoirs. The phonolitic lavas are produced by approximately 80% fractional crystallization (34% clinopyroxene, 30% anorthoclase feldspar, 15.5% magnetite, 12.5% olivine, 5% apatite and 4% ilmenite) of a hydrous basanitic magma at mantle depths (P > 0.6 GPa) under reduced oxygen fugacity (~ FMQ-1). In this third scenario, the phonolitic magma might be reactivated by the arrival of a new batch of deeper basanitic magma.

Abstract

At oceanic spreading centers, the interactions between the igneous system that builds the crust, and the hydrothermal system that cools it govern the plumbing system architecture and its thermokinetic evolution. At fast-spreading centers, most of those interactions occur around the axial magma lens (AML) that feeds the upper crust, and possibly part of the underlying mushy igneous reservoir. Heat extracted from crystallizing AML is transferred through a conductive boundary layer to the overlying hydrothermal system. Quantifying the AML physical and thermal evolutions and its interactions with hydrothermal system is therefore essential to understand oceanic accretion. Those general issues were the rationale of drilling ICDP OmanDP Hole GT3A, and we present herein the geological, structural, and petrological data that were used as a site survey to select its location. GT3 area enables observations in three dimensions of fossilized AMLs and overlying dikes. The new field data and corresponding mineral compositions are used together with thermokinetic and thermodynamic models to deliver an integrated dynamic model for the AML / hydrothermal system interactions. Results attest that the isotropic gabbro interval is composite, with gabbro bodies intruding and reheating both gabbros and dikes (up to 1040°C). We show that AMLs should be considered as transient igneous bodies that likely crystallize from primitive MORBs in decades, releasing heat to the intruded hosts, and feeding high temperature vents on the seafloor. We show for the first time that the thermal gradient recorded in AML roof is consistent with the heat fluxes reported at active hydrothermal vents.

co-auteur étranger; International audience; We conducted a petrological study of the layered gabbros and peridotites outcropping in the cirque of Salazie, combining field investigations, geochemistry, petrography and, mineralogy to constrain the magmatic evolution of Piton des Neiges volcano (La Réunion). Three new hectometer-long outcrops are reported here (Sites 1, 2 and 3) in addition to the gabbroic series (hereafter named Site 4) previously described in the literature. The Sites 1 and 2 are located in the upper parts of the Mât River and show dunite and wehrlite units with no apparent foliation, lineation, or layering. The Sites 3 and 4 are located in the lower parts of the river and are made of olivine-gabbro, gabbro and ferrogabbro units showing marked foliation and lineation, and abundant layering. The mean composition of primary phases varies between Sites 1–2 and Sites 3–4: Fo89.5 to Fo69.8 in olivine, Mg# of 90 to 69 in clinopyroxene, and Mg# of 44 to 0 in Cr-spinel, titanomagnetite and, ilmenite, respectively. Here we show that the layered gabbros and peridotites exposed at the four sites represent multiple levels of magma storage. Based on the results of previous gravimetric studies and a drill hole related to geothermal exploration, we propose that the gabbroic series belongs to a magmatic system predating the building of Piton des Neiges and centered underneath the cirque of Salazie. The high volume of erupted materials in the NE quadrant of the volcanic edifice, and the southward magmatic flow direction in the layered gabbros suggest that the initial eruptive center of Proto-Piton des Neiges was above the cirque of Salazie, ~3 km north of the present-day summit. The landscape of Piton des Neiges may have changed when its NE flank experienced a major lateral collapse, after complete solidification of the gabbroic bodies. The magmatic activity, then, shifted southward after the flank collapse. Finally, we suggest that peridotites outcrops are associated with the present-day Piton des Neiges.

Abstract

International audience; Piton des Neiges basaltic volcano (La Réunion) has been deeply dissected by erosion, exposing large volumes of debris avalanche deposits. To shed light on the factors that led to volcano flank destabilizations, we studied the structure, the crystallographic and magnetic fabrics of the substratum of a debris avalanche unit. This substratum is a complex of N50 seaward-dipping sills that has been exposed by the avalanche. Structural observations show that the sill plane in contact with the avalanche is one of the latest intrusions in the sill complex. In this uppermost sill, the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is correlated to the crystallographic preferred orientation of magmatic silicate minerals, allowing us to use AMS as a proxy to infer the magmatic flow. The AMS fabric across the intrusion is strongly asymmetric, which reveals that the contact sill was emplaced with a normal shear displacement of its hanging wall. The shear displacement and the magma flow in the intrusion are both directed toward the NNE, i.e. toward the sea, which is also the direction of the slope and of the debris avalanche runout. Because all the sills in the intrusion complex have a similar dip and dip direction, it is likely that several of them also underwent a cointrusive slip toward the NNE. We conclude that this cointrusive normal slip, repeated over many intrusions of the sill complex, increased the flank instability of the volcano. This incre-mental instability may have ended up into the observed debris avalanche deposit. At Piton de la Fournaise, the active volcano of La Réunion, sill intrusion and cointrusive flank displacement have been inferred from geophys-ical studies for the April 2007 eruption. By providing direct evidence of sheared sills, our study substantiates the idea that repeated sill intrusions may eventually trigger flank destabilizations in basaltic volcanoes.

Abstract

(IF 3.55; Q1); International audience; Little is known about the geological history of the Glorieuses seamount including basic information about its age and origin related to the regional evolution of the southern tip of the Somali Basin. This study focused on describing and reconstructing the long-term stratigraphic evolution of the Glorieuses seamount (SW Indian Ocean) to identify the mechanisms that have occurred through time to finally shape the emerged modern islands. Distinct terrace levels, currently submerged along the flanks of the seamount and surrounding seamounts, have already been interpreted as resulting from successive carbonate development and back-stepping episodes over the last 62 Myr. New isotopic and biostratigraphic dating on the flanks of the seamount, coupled with sequence stratigraphic interpretation of seismic profiles acquired in the adjacent basin, provide new constraints for the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic vertical evolution of the seamount topped by carbonate platforms and sedimentation in the surrounding deep basin. Even if starved steep slopes prevent a straightforward source-to-sink continuity between the platform and the basin domains, our findings propose a consistent chronostratigraphic framework for the identified seismic markers and sequences in the deep basin, and discuss a long-term geological model that includes the main driving factors behind deposition (volcanic events, subsidence vs uplift phases, climate and hydro-dynamism changes) and their quantitative impact on the evolution of the isolated carbonate sedimentary system. Our results show that: (i) the Glorieuses volcanic seamount emerged from two successive Late Cretaceous magmatic pulses, firstly during the Turonian, then during the Maastrichtian (ii) at least two potential uplift phases are recognized during the Tertiary (Paleogene and/or the Eocene and Tortonian); (iii) basinal sedimentation recorded an abrupt change probably related to major regional hydro-dynamical changes in Late Eocene times in the Western Indian Ocean; (iv) the export of sediments from the platform towards the basin (numerous gravity flow processes) is strongly enhanced after the Mid Miocene, and is probably linked to the onset of the Asian monsoon winds and bipolar circulation. Finally, the Glorieuses seamount, although located in the vicinity of the Comoros islands, appears to have a much longer history and is geologically more comparable to the nearby Seychelles. This long-term study has enabled us to associate the Glorieuses seamount with the SSE-NNW Madagascar-Seychelles alignment rather than with the Comoro hot spot evolution.

Abstract

(IF 2,217); International audience; This contribution aims at understanding how magmatism, hydrothermal alteration, and deformation may have interacted to localize a detachment (a low-angle normal fault) in a basaltic volcano. Piton des Neiges, an inactive volcano of La Réunion Island, has been deeply cut by erosion, allowing its inner structure to be investigated. The deepest unit observed in the edifice is a kilometer-scale plutonic complex, the top of which is intruded by multiple sills. This zone of repeated sill intrusions has been interpreted as a detachment because it displays evidence of hydrothermal alteration in the greenschist facies linked to a brittle-ductile shear deformation. Deformation begins with cataclasis and is followed by mylonitization and chlorite crystallization, then by hydrofracturing and pumpellyite crystallization. Subsequent and post-deformation calcite crystallization occurs in voids such as fractures and vacuoles. Aluminium substitutions in chlorite suggest that the syn-deformation hydrothermal alteration did not exceed 250 °C and peaked in the deformation zone. Comparison of bulk-rock major element analyses of fresh, altered and deformed rocks shows that the zone of sill intrusion and deformation localized increased concentrations of P and K otherwise depleted in the footwall and hangingwall rocks, suggesting that the detachment acted as a trap for fluids.In contradiction with proposed models of volcano spreading, it is apparent that the portion of Piton des Neiges accessible to observation did not deform by creep of a large hydrothermal system or a plutonic complex below its solidus. Instead, the interface between the already cooled plutonic complex and the host rock acted as a brittle failure zone and was repeatedly intruded by magma injections. This localized heat source promoted hydrothermal alteration and low temperature creep in and around the discontinuity. The same process of magmatism-related weakening might occur on active volcanoes; it may, for instance, explain the slow post-eruptive deformation of the Eastern flank of Piton de La Fournaise (the active volcano of La Réunion) observed since the April 2007 eruption.
