This article analyses two contemporary novels, Mary Paulson-Ellis’The Other Mrs Walker(2016) and Ever Dundas’Goblin(2017), comparing their depictions of Edinburgh in their strikingly similar parallel narratives, in which a contemporary Edinburgh setting intertwines with that of London in the Second World War. In the context of the Brexit vote of 2016, in which arguments for British autonomy and border closure won the day, the article argues that these texts challenge the pro-Brexit discourse which employed the mythology of the Blitz spirit to undermine the backward-looking nostalgia of a specifically English nationalism. In contrast, the Scottish setting of Edinburgh is presented here as facilitating a turn to a future of more mobile narratives of interrelation and connectedness rather than the fixed dimensions of myth

This introduction to the Scottish Women’s Poetry special issue presents a brief overview of the current critical field, sets out the rationale behind the special issue as going some way to initiate a redressing of the critical neglect of twenty-first-century Scottish women poets, and addresses the significance of the terms of engagement before going on to introduce the essays. It argues for the special issue as a step toward encouraging greater critical engagement with Scottish women’s poetry and exploration of the diverse strands of practice in the field.

This essay traces a trajectory between the diminution of the radical objectives of second wave feminism and the rise of postfeminism in two contemporary novels by Scottish writers. Laura Hird's Born Free (1999) and Jenni Fagan's The Panopticon (2012) illustrate the shrinking of radical feminist ideals to a sexual revolution appropriated by the individualism, consumerism and competitive market-focused ideology which characterises neoliberal postfeminism and sustains misogynist social structures. Informed by critiques of postfeminism by commentators such as Angela McRobbie and Rosalind Gill, the essay finds Hird's end of century pessimistic vision of female defeat allayed to some extent in Fagan's gothic-tinged narrative of a marginalised outsider evading neo-patriarchal containment. The texts demonstrate a damaging disorientation in contemporary femininity produced by what McRobbie terms the postfeminist gender settlement.

Agile manufacturing, a strategy developed from lean production methods, is aimed at providing companies with the capabilities to succeed in the twenty‐first century, serving ever more sophisticated customer demand. In this paper, the application of this strategy, originally developed for manufacturing industry, is described in a telecommunications context. Examples of ways in which it is being used in BT are presented.

The Clinical Teams Programme aims to develop clinical leadership. This article describes how it was used to improve teamworking at Reading PCT. The programme enhanced clinical leadership by improving confidence, allowing the development of effective teams and providing solutions to improve existing practice and patient care.

In June 2006, a quadrivalent human papillomavirus (types 6, 11, 16 and 18) recombinant vaccine (Gardasil; Merck) was approved by the US FDA for the prevention of several diseases, including cervical cancer, that are caused by these types of human papillomavirus.

Silicon micromachining can be used to fabricate motherboards onto which optical, optoelectronic and electronic components can be aligned using low-cost passive alignment techniques. Further functionality can be added by incorporating planar silica waveguides, which route the optical signal within the motherboard and may also perform optical processing functions. This paper begins by describing some motherboard elements developed at BT Laboratories, then discusses examples of two modules which have been fabricated, combining several of these elements to form optical sub-systems.

This paper delineates a rarely studied but important family process: how a family perceives and understands the relationships in other families it knows. We hypothesize that these perceptions of other families are fundamental components of a family's shared construing of its social world. Families differ in how they perceive other families, specifically, and in their approach to construing or apprehending their social world, generally. We have hypothesized that these general differences also play a crucial role in shaping the style and competence of family problem-solving. A family's approach to any problem depends upon how it construes or interprets the social context of that problem. Using these general concepts of family life, we construct specific hypotheses linking family problem-solving and interfamily perception. We describe methods for measuring both family problem-solving and how a family perceives other families. Findings confirm our major hypothesis: A family that searches for underlying and subtle patterns in a problem-solving situation will develop a more differentiated and organized conception of other families.

This report outlines my attempt to investigate the notion that the Youth Training Scheme curriculum is best understood as an expression of ideology. It is a report of an on-going piece of research and the focus is on the Supporting Studies element of the YTS as the place in the curriculum where ideology is most obviously manifest. To begin with, the curriculum of the Supporting Studies element is being examined in an attempt to discover whether or not it fulfils the (MSC) perceived ‘need’ of enhancing the employability of the trainees. This examination is made from four major perspectives: those of (a) the trainees, (b) the teachers and trainers, (c) the work experience ‘employers’, and (d) MSC personnel directly involved with the schemes as the designated ‘link’ people. Furthermore, some of the ideological notions which rest behind the YTS are being examined, particularly in the area of the ‘core skills’ in which ‘Supporting Studies’ is firmly lodged.

• Families, like persons, can be considered as unitary cases. Like persons, families can be classified before treatment begins in an effort to predict their responses and thus, to formulate the best treatment program. Although many classification schemes have been proposed in the past, evidence is presented on the first successful use to our knowledge of a family classification scheme to predict a family's response to a family-oriented treatment program. The classification scheme grouped families according to their typical style of adapting to new situations. A family's classification was based on its performance in a standard laboratory problem-solving situation in which its interaction patterns could be measured precisely and objectively. This approach to classification successfully predicted the family's engagement in a family-oriented, inpatient treatment program for adolescents.

• A family's perception of a treatment program may determine whether it becomes productively engaged or destructively withdrawn. A theory of family types, in conjunction with a standardized laboratory problem solving procedure, was used to predict the nature of families' shared perceptions of a psychiatric ward. The individual and shared perceptions of thirty families were determined by means of a specially designed Q-sort. Two dimensions of problem solving behavior successfully predicted significant differences between families in their shared perceptions. Configuration, or the family's capacity to derive effective solutions in the laboratory, predicted the subtlety of their perception of the ward. Coordination, or the capacity of family members to dovetail their problem solving efforts with one another, predicted the family's sense of comfort and engagement in the ward setting.
