Microstructured light guiding plates (LGP) open up new capabilities in the design of energy efficient and flexible light sources for room lighting. One desirable application is the illumination of office rooms by LGPs located mainly at the façade. Starting with the requirements of an ideal light distribution curve for uniform room lighting, suitable optical microstructures have been designed and investigated by numerical ray tracing methods to be integrated in façade elements. The maximum of the desired light distribution curve for the test case is at an angle of 96° with respect to the vertical direction. The designed micro-system meets this requirement very well at an angle of 98° and a light cone width of 25°. The light emission of the proposed LGP is highly efficient with 80% coupling efficiency.

This report is a result of extensive discussions within Task 56 of the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHC) of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Innovative solar envelope technologies face multiple barriers, which prevent some of these innovations from contributing significantly against climate change. This report presents the barriers that the experts of Task 56 are aware of. The aim is to provide a comprehensive view (as much as possible) that developers of new integrated solar envelope systems could benefit of, at an early stage of their planning phase.

Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es, die Wirkung von Licht auf den Menschen aus Sicht der Psychologie darzustellen und einen Uberblick aktueller psychologischer Forschungsbefunde zum Einfluss von Licht und Beleuchtungssystemen darzubieten. Um Beleuchtung optimal einsetzen zu konnen, ist es erforderlich, sowohl die Wirkweisen von Licht als auch den Einfluss von Licht und Beleuchtung auf Leistung, Wohlbefinden und Verhalten von dessen Nutzern zu kennen. Dementsprechend wird zunachst die grundlegende Wirkung von Licht auf den Menschen dargestellt, gefolgt von einem umfassenden Uberblick der wichtigsten psychologischen Forschungsbefunde zum Einfluss von Licht auf Arbeitsleistung, Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden, Interaktionen mit anderen Personen sowie dem Konsumbereich. Abschliesend werden der aktuelle Stand des Wissens und der weitere Forschungsbedarf zusammengefasst. Psychological evidence on light and its impact on humans – an overview. The aim of the present article is to describe the light’s effects on humans from a psychological perspective and to give an overview of actual psychological research on the influence of light and illumination. In order to optimize lighting applications, it is necessary to know both the routes of influence via which light affects humans and the impact of light and illumination on user’s performance, wellbeing, and behavior. Consequently, we first outline the fundamental effect of light on humans and then summarize psychological evidence on the light’s influence on task performance, health and wellbeing, social interactions and consumer behavior. Building on this review, the current state of knowledge and need for further research are summarized.

The present document includes a state-of-the-art review of solar envelope systems that are already on the market or that can potentially reach that stage in a short-medium timeframe. The analysis focuses on the technological integration of such solutions in the envelope and building, but non-technical issues such as aesthetic, architectural integration and customer acceptance are also tackled. The solar envelope systems are classified in: Solar harvesting systems: systems that generate electricity or heat; Solar gains control systems, controlling; Hybrid systems: combination of solar harvesting and solar gains control systems.
