Water deficits are considered the primary environmental stress in agriculture, and improving the growth and production of plants under this stress is one of the primary goals of breeding and crop management programs. The apple tree is a plant that is negatively affected by water stress. Plants that develop under a water deficit may develop physiological and anatomical strategies to survive or even produce fruits in these environments. In view of the importance of and lack of studies of the leaf anatomy of apple trees in areas with a water deficit that are intended to support genetic improvement programs for this fruit either to introduce cultivars in regions with water deficits or to select potential progenies for future crosses, the aim of this study was to compare the anatomical characteristics of apple leaves from two distinct environments (water deficit and precipitation) under tropical conditions. Twelve fully expanded leaves were collected from seven apple cultivars (Eva, Rainha, Princesa, Julieta, Imperatriz, Baronesa, and Gala Real), which are planted in the experimental orchard at Universidade Federal de Lavras, during water deficit (September) and precipitation (February) seasons. Sixteen anatomical characteristics were evaluated in addition to the anatomical description of the apple leaves. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 7×2 factorial arrangement. The means were analyzed using the Scott-Knott method for grouping means at the 5% level of error probability. Genetic divergence, cultivar clustering and principal component analyses were also performed based on the anatomical characteristics evaluated during the two seasons. The apple leaves had anatomical characteristics that can favor the production of this fruit tree in areas experiencing water deficits within subtropical regions. According to their anatomical characteristics, there was genetic divergence among the apple cultivars studied here. The cultivars Gala Real, Eva, and Baronesa presented anatomical and morphological characteristics that showed adaptation potential in areas with water deficits.

The study evaluated the microsporogenesis of olive trees subjected to different agricultural pesticide applications during flowering. Inflorescences of cultivars Arbequina and MGS GRAP541 were subjected to agricultural pesticides: mineral oil, neem oil, dimethoate and deltamethrin. The floral buds were fixed in Carnoy for the microsporogenesis analysis and in Karnovsky for scanning electron microscopy. The slides were prepared by squash technique and staining with propionic carmine. The pollen viability was determined by Alexander’s stain and in vitro germination. Results show that the quantification of abnormalities in meiosis in the two cultivars caused significant effect among the treatments, being that all differed statistically from the control group. Both methods showed a higher percentage of viable pollens in the control treatment and lower percentage of viability with the agricultural pesticides. In order to ensure success in controlled hybridizations in olive tree cultivation, the information on pollen viability and stigma receptivity is essential. The aim was to establish methodologies that increase the preservation of pollen viability and to establish the time to perform crossbreeds in hybridization studies with olive trees. Three experiments were performed with plants from the cultivar Arbequina, in Maria da Fé, MG, Brazil. In the first experiment, the description of the flower events was performed. In the second, anthers were desiccated in eppendorfs, being stored at three different conditions for pollen viability test: room temperature (27 ºC), refrigerator (8 ºC) and freezer (-10 ºC). In order to evaluate the in vitro germination, culture medium for olive pollen grains was used. In this respect, pollen grains were transferred in Petri dish containing culture medium and placed in a BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) chamber at 28 ºC for 60 h, being counted. The first evaluation was performed prior to the assembly of the experiment, testing the initial viability, whereas the second occurred 24 h after storage. Subsequently, seven evaluations were performed fortnightly. In the third experiment, the stigma receptivity was verified by the 3% hydrogen peroxide method, with flowers in pre-anthesis, anthesis and post-anthesis, evaluated hourly in the period from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for three days. In the description of the flower events, it was verified that the olive tree shows diurnal anthesis, with flower opening between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The anthers stored in a freezer preserved the viability for 60 days and the stigmas were receptive since the pre-anthesis. RESUMO Para assegurar o sucesso em hibridizações controladas na cultura da oliveira, é fundamental informações sobre a viabilidade polínica, assim como a receptividade do estigma. Objetivou-se estabelecer metodologias que aumentem a preservação da viabilidade polínica e estabelecer o momento para se realizar cruzamentos em trabalhos de hibridização com oliveiras. Foram realizados três experimentos com plantas da cultivar Arbequina, em Maria da Fé, MG. No primeiro experimento realizou-se a descrição dos eventos florais. No segundo, anteras foram dessecadas em eppenddorfs, sendo armazenados em três condições diferentes para teste de viabilidade polínica : temperatura ambiente (27 ºC), geladeira (8 ºC) e freezer (-10 ºC). Para avaliação da germinação in vitro, utilizou-se meio de cultura para grãos de pólen de oliveira. Para isso, grãos de pólen foram transferidos em placa de Petri, contendo meio de cultura e colocadas em estufa do tipo BOD (Demanda Biológica de Oxigenio) a 28 ºC por 60 h, sendo contabilizados. A primeira avaliação foi realizada antes da montagem do experimento, testando a viabilidade inicial: a segunda 24 horas após armazenamento. Posteriormente, foram realizadas sete avaliações quinzenais. No terceiro experimento verificou-se a receptividade estigmática pelo método de peróxido de hidrogênio 3%, com flores em pré-antese, antese e pós-antese, avaliados a cada hora, no período de 7 h as 18 h por três dias. Na descrição dos eventos florais, verificou-se que a oliveira apresenta antese diurna, com abertura floral entre 10 e 11 horas. As anteras armazenadas em freezer preservam a viabilidade por 60 dias e os estigmas apresentaram-se receptivos desde a pré-antese.

Pollen grain germination in vitro indicates viability and consequently provides information related to fruit set. It also assists in the development of hybrids. Along with a suitable species, a standard culture medium is essential for evaluating pollen viability. It should contain a gelling agent consisting of carbohydrates and enhancer elements as well as have the correct pH, temperature, and incubation time. The objective of this study was to optimise the culture medium, determine the pollen germination capacity, and quantify the number of pollen grains per flower of certain olive tree cultivars. A basic sequential culture medium for pollen grain germination was determined, always utilizing the best result from the previous experiment to continue the sequence.The factorial treatment arrangement was: 1) agar versus boric acid; 2) pH versus sucrose; 3) calcium nitrate versus magnesium sulfate. After determining the culture medium components, two experiments were conducted evaluating temperature and incubation time. Another experiment evaluated both the germination percentage and the number of flower pollen grains of 28 cultivars. The culture medium should be composed of 4 g∙L-1 of agar, 90 g∙L-1 of sucrose, and 400 mg∙L-1 of boric acid with a pH adjusted to 5.79 and an incubation time of 60 h at 28 °C. The Manzanilla 215 cultivar had the highest germination rate while Ascolano 315 presented the highest number of pollen grains per flower.

The pear tree is originally a temperate-climate fruit tree. The cross Pyrus communis × Pyrus pyrifolia generated hybrid cultivars adapted to subtropical regions. However, the low effective fruiting is a limiting factor for the expansion of pear tree crops in subtropical regions and no pollinizer plants have been identified for these cultivars in subtropical regions. This work aimed to identify possible pollinizer pear tree cultivars in subtropical regions by evaluating the stigmatic receptivity, the germination percentage, and the number of pollen grains. Seven hybrid pear cultivars were used. Flowers of each cultivar at each floral stage were collected (E, E2, F, F2, and G). The stigmatic receptivity was evaluated by immersing the material in 3% hydrogen peroxide. Flowers were collected for the quantification of anthers, pollen grains per anther and per flower, and pollen grain germination. Stigmas were 100% receptive for all cultivars at the F2 and G stages. Cultivar Cascatense showed a large number of anthers and pollen grains per anther and per flower. The highest pollen grain germination percentage was detected for Cascatense (72.75%). Cultivars Seleta and Triunfo have high stigmatic receptivity for a longer period during the flowering stage, proven to be a potential female parent. Cascatense has a higher germination percentage and a larger number of anthers per flower, pollen grains per anther, and pollen grains per flower. Cascatense has a high potential to be used as a pollinizer, both in pear tree breeding programs and commercial orchards.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho quantificar a composição mineral das folhas de Oliveira a fim de diagnosticar o estado nutricional das plantas cultivadas em sistema convencional. O experimento foi conduzido com sete cultivares Arbequina, MGS Asc 315, MGS Mariense, MGS Grap 541, MGS Grap 561, Grappolo 575 e Leccino, em blocos casualizados com 4 repetições e parcelas com cinco plantas. Em maio de 2010 foram coletadas 60 folhas de cada cultivar (12 por planta) e submetidas a analise foliar. As cultivares apresentaram diferenças significativas entre si quanto aos teores foliares médios de nutrientes. Observou-se também que apesar da analise de solo apontar níveis elevados de Fe e Mn, a análise foliar acusou deficiência para esses elementos em todas as cultivares de Oliveira avaliadas. Os resultados alertam para os altos níveis de Cu, como consequência do uso abusivo de fungicidas a base de oxicloreto e calda bordalesa nos pomares. A concentração elevada desse elemento nas folhas pode causar fitotoxidez às plantas. Desta forma, sugere-se o uso racional de fertilizantes e de produtos fitossanitários no cultivo da oliveira a fim de evitar fitotoxidez ou deficiências nutricionais.

To support breeding programs of pear tree, on the selection of cultivars to subtropical area in Brazil, the objective of this research was to adjust the growth medium basic to pollen grain germination. The pollen grains of 'D'Água' cultivar were spread on the surface of Petri dishes containing 20 ml of culture medium in accordance with the following sequential experiments: 1) ágar (4; 6; 8 and 10 g L-1) and pH (3,5; 4,5; 5,5 and 6,5); 2) sucrose (0; 30; 60 and 90 g L-1); 3) calcium nitrate (0; 200; 400 and 800 mg L-1); 4) boric acid (0; 400; 800 and 1200 mg L-1); 5) temperature of incubation (15; 20; 25 e 30 ºC) and 6) emission time of the pollen tube (0; 1; 2; 3; 4; 5 and 6 hours after inoculation). After incubation, the germination rate of pollen grains of nine pear cultivars ('Rocha', 'Abate Fetel', 'Packham's Triumph', 'Atago', 'Hosui', 'Primorosa', 'Triunfo', 'Seleta' and 'D'Água') was evaluated, and number of stamens, the number of pollen grains per anther and per flower. The protocol for germination of pollen grains of pear tree consist in the culture medium have to be solidified with 10 g L-1 ágar, being the pH measured to 5,2 , added with 90 g L-1 sucrose, 145 mg L-1 calcium nitrate and 700 mg L-1 boric acid, with incubation temperature of 23 ºC. The readings germination percentage should be performed after five hours of incubation. The pollen grain 'Rocha' cultivar showed higher germination percentage. RESUMO Visando dar suporte aos trabalhos de melhoramento da pereira, para seleção de cultivares para regiões subtropicais, objetivou-se ajustar o meio de cultura para a germinação de grãos de pólen. Os grãos de pólen da cultivar 'D'Água' foram espalhados sobre placas de Petri contendo 20 mL de meio, de acordo com os experimentos sequenciais: 1) ágar (4; 6; 8 e 10 g L-1) e pH (3,5; 4,5; 5,5 e 6,5); 2) sacarose (0; 30; 60 e 90 g L-1); 3) nitrato de cálcio (0; 200; 400 e 800 mg L-1); 4) ácido bórico (0; 400; 800 e 1200 mg L-1); 5) temperatura de incubação (15; 20; 25 e 30 ºC) e 6) tempo de emissão do tubo polínico (0; 1; 2; 3; 4; 5 e 6 horas após a inoculação). Após a inoculação avaliou-se a germinação dos grãos de pólen de nove cultivares ('Rocha', 'Abate Fetel', 'Packham's Triumph', 'Atago', 'Hosui', 'Primorosa', 'Triunfo', 'Seleta' e 'D'Água'), além do número de anteras, número de grãos de pólen por antera e por flor. O protocolo para germinação de grãos de pólen de pereira consiste no meio de cultura ser solidificado com 10 g L-1 de ágar, com pH ideal de 5,2, acrescido de 90 g L-1 de sacarose, 145 mg L-1 de nitrato de cálcio e 700 mg L-1 de ácido bórico, com temperatura de incubação de 23,7 ºC. As análises de germinação devem ser realizadas após 5h de incubação. Os grãos de pólen da cultivar 'Rocha' apresentaram maior porcentagem de germinação.

O estabelecimento de tamanho ótimo de parcela, em qualquer cultura, é uma das maneiras de se aumentar a precisão experimental e maximizar as informações obtidas em um experimento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho ótimo de parcelas, em experimentos com rabanete, para as variáveis massa e diâmetro de raiz, e comparar diferentes métodos de estimação. Foi conduzido um ensaio de uniformidade, sendo o plantio do rabanete realizado nos espaçamentos de 15 cm entre linhas e de 5 cm entre plantas . A unidade básica foi definida como um segmento linear de três plantas consecutivas. Após 30 dias do plantio, foram avaliados a massa (g) e o diâmetro (mm) dos rabanetes. Foram simulados 35 tamanhos de parcelas, determinando a média e o coeficiente de variação para cada tamanho de parcela e, por meio de modelos não lineares, foi determinado o tamanho ótimo de parcela para ensaios com rabanete. Constatou-se que o método da máxima curvatura, modificado, e os modelos segmentados de resposta linear e quadrática estimam tamanhos de parcela diferentes; portanto, em experimentos com a cultura do rabanete recomendam-se parcelas com 21 a 63 plantas (0,1575 a 0,4745 m²) por parcela.

O cultivo de oliveira (Olea europaea L.) no sul de Minas Gerais tem apresentado resultados promissores quanto à produção de frutos. No entanto, há necessidade de verificar seu valor nutritivo e a qualidade do azeite oriundo dos frutos das cultivares potencialmente produtivas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a composição centesimal dos frutos, as características químicas e o perfil de ácidos graxos dos azeites extraídos de diferentes cultivares de oliveira, com a finalidade de selecionar os materiais com potencial agroindustrial. Foram avaliadas 32 cultivares de oliveira com seis anos de idades quanto à composição centesimal (teores de umidade, lipídeos, proteínas e cinzas, tanto na polpa quanto no caroço dos frutos); composição química e perfil de ácidos graxos dos azeites. Observaram-se nas cultivares MGS ASC315, Cerignola, MGS GRAP561 e MGS GRAP575 maiores valores de lipídeos. Além disso, as análises indicaram que o caroço possui quantidades significativas de lipídeos, embora sempre inferiores às quantidades presentes na polpa. Os índices de acidez em ácido oleico, peróxidos e refração absoluta estão de acordo com a resolução da ANVISA, podendo ser inicialmente classificados como azeite de oliva extravirgem ou virgem. De modo geral, todos os ácidos graxos presentes nos azeites possuem valores satisfatórios, destacando a cultivar MGS GRAP084, com maior concentração de ácido oleico, principal ácido responsável pelos benefícios à saúde. Olive tree (Olea europaea L.) grown in south Minas Gerais State has shown promising results for fruit yield. However, little is still known about the fruit nutritional value and oil quality for those potentially productive cultivars. The objective of this work was to determine fruit centesimal composition, chemical characteristics, and the fatty acids profile of oils extracted from different olive tree cultivars to select the ones with improved agro-industrial potential. We assessed 32 six-year-old olive cultivars for the centesimal composition (moisture, lipids, proteins, and ash content, both in flesh and stone fruits), chemical composition, and fatty acid profiles. The cultivars MGS ACS315, Cerignola, MGS GRAP561, and MGS GRAP575 showed higher lipid content. Besides, these results indicated that the fruit core showed significant lipid amounts, although lower than those present in the pulp. The index results of oleic acid, peroxides, and absolute refraction are in agreement with ANVISA resolution and initially may be classified as virgin or extra virgin oil. In general, all fatty acids present in the olive oil tested had satisfactory values and the MGS GRAP084 cultivar had the highest content of oleic acid, the main fatty acid responsible for health benefits.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o enraizamento de estacas semilenhosas provenientes de 35 cultivares de oliveira, coletadas em duas épocas do ano (abril e agosto). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 35x2, com quatro repetições e 25 estacas por parcela. As estacas foram preparadas com aproximadamente 12 cm de comprimento e 4 a 6 internódios, com quatro folhas inteiras na região apical. O tratamento com solução hidroalcoólica de ácido indolbutírico (AIB), na concentração de 3 g L-1, foi realizado por imersão de 3 cm da base das estacas na solução, por cinco segundos. As estacas foram acondicionadas em bancadas preenchidas com areia e colocadas em casa de vegetação com nebulização intermitente. Decorridos 70 dias, verificou-se que o potencial de enraizamento das estacas é de grande variação entre as cultivares de oliveira. As cultivares MGS MANZ215 e MGS TAF390 se destacaram pela maior capacidade de enraizamento. A estaquia em abril favorece o enraizamento, em relação à estaquia realizada em agosto, para algumas das cultivares avaliadas.The aim of this study was to evaluate the semi-woody rooting of cuttings from 35 olive cultivars collected at two different times (April and August). The experimental design was the completely randomized in factorial 35x2, with 4 replicates and 25 cuttings per plot. The cuttings were standardized to 12 cm long and 4-6 internodes, with four entire leaves in the apical region. The treatment with hydroalcoholic solution of indolebutyric acid (IBA) at concentration of 3 g L-1 was performed by immersion of 3 cm from the base of the cuttings in the solution, for five seconds. The cutting was planted in sand and placed in greenhouse with intermittent mist. After 70 days, there was a significant variation in rooting among the olive cultivars. The cultivars MGS MANZ215 and MGS TAF390 showed higher rooting capacity. The cuttings collected in April presented higher rooting as compared to those ones collected in August for some of the cultivars evaluated.

O cultivo de oliveira, no Brasil, é recente e os seus atributos produtivos, bem como cultivares disponíveis, ainda não são muito conhecidos. A caracterização agronômica e carpométrica dos frutos de diferentes cultivares são primordiais para o avanço da olivicultura brasileira. Este trabalho objetivou realizar a caracterização agronômica e carpométrica de 35 cultivares de oliveira. O experimento foi conduzido na fazenda experimental da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (Epamig), em Maria da Fé (MG). Para a caracterização agronômica, foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições, sendo uma planta por parcela, e a produção, produtividade, número de frutos por planta, seção de tronco, volume e superfície externa de copa foram avaliados. Para a caracterização carpométrica, foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 10 repetições, sendo um fruto ou caroço por parcela, e o comprimento, largura, massa e volume de frutos e caroços e, também, a relação polpa/caroço foram avaliados. As características agronômicas das plantas variaram entre as cultivares, com destaque para a Negroa, que apresentou maior produção (18,42 kg planta-1), produtividade (7,68 t ha-1) e número de frutos (9.399,08); MGS ASC322, com maior seção de tronco; MGS MISS293, com maior volume e superfície externa de copa; e MGS JB1, que apresentou maior relação superfície externa de copa/número de frutos. Quanto à carpometria, a MGS GRAP556 apresentou maiores dimensões de frutos e caroços e a MGS GRAP541 maior relação polpa/caroço. Growing olive trees in Brazil is a recent practice, and their productive attributes, as well as available cultivars, are not yet well-known. The agronomic and carpometric characterization of fruits from different cultivars are vital for the improvement of the Brazilian olive growing. This study aimed at evaluating the agronomic characterization and carpometry of 35 olive tree cultivars. For the carpometric characterization, a completely randomized design with ten replications was used, with one fruit or pit per plot, and length, width, fruits mass and volume and pit, as well as the pulp/pit ratio, were evaluated. The agronomic features of plants differed among cultivars, standing out the Negroa, which reached the highest yield (18.42 kg plant-1 and 7.68 t ha-1) and number of fruits (9,399.08); MGS ASC322, with the largest trunk section; MGS MISS293, with the highest outer crown volume and surface; and MGS JB1, which presented the greatest outer crown surface/number of fruits ratio. Concerning carpometry, the MGS GRAP556 cultivar presented the highest sizes for fruit and pit, while 'MGS GRAP541' presented the highest pulp/pit ratio.
