Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Authors Microbial contamination in grocery shops (GS) should be evaluated since food commodities are commonly handled by workers and customers increasing the risk of food contamination and disease transmission. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbial contamination in Portuguese and Spanish GS with a multi-approach protocol using passive (electrostatic dust cloths and surface swabs) sampling methods. The molecular detection of Aspergillus sections, mycotoxin analysis, screening of azole resistance as well as cytotoxicity measurement were conducted to better estimate the potential health risks of exposure and to identify possible relations between the risk factors studied. Fruits/vegetables sampling location was the one identified has being the most contaminated (bacteria and fungi) area in GS from both countries. Aspergillus section Fumigati and Fusarium species were observed in samples from Portuguese groceries with reduced susceptibilities to azoles commonly used in the clinical treatment of fungal infections. Fumonisin B2 was detected in Portuguese GS possible unveiling this emergent threat concerning occupational exposure and food safety. Overall, the results obtained raise concerns regarding human health and food safety and must be surveilled applying a One Health approach. publishersversion published

Many studies have explored the perception of the COVID-19 vaccination program and the determinants of its acceptance. The acceptance rate of COVID-19 vaccine has been investigated and reported in previous studies, varying across countries globally, ranging from 43.4% to 94.3%. In order to bring together all relevant data on COVID-19 vaccine intention determinants, the main goal of this work is to determine which socio demographic and psychological determinants could be responsible for the intention of adults’ vaccination.

Immunoglobulins are a central component of humoral immunity and their serum concentrations are routinely determined in clinical practice because they provide key information on the humoral immune status. In a single centre prospective design study, we evaluated IgA, IgE, IgG, and IgM serum concentrations in patients with histologically confirmed acute appendicitis (study group, N=54) and compared it to the control group (N=69), patients submitted to appendectomy, but with normal histological findings, patients submitted to day case surgery and healthy volunteers. The serum concentrations of immunoglobulins were normal in all cases, except for IgE, that were elevated in both the study (20%) and control (21 %) groups (p= 0.609). These values are in good agreement with the prevalence of allergies in the general population. Our study is the first to address specifically the acute appendicitis Immunoglobulins humoral immune response in the English literature. Introdução – A tomografia de emissão de fotão simples sincronizada com o sinal eletrocardiográfico (Gated-SPECT) é essencial para a avaliação conjunta da perfusão e da função ventricular esquerda (VE) do miocárdio. Objetivo – Investigar a relação entre a função VE e o índice de captação (IC) miocárdio/pulmão direito (M/PD) e M/P esquerdo (M/PE) nos estudos Gated-SPECT com 99mTc-Tetrofosmina. Metodologia – Amostra de 32 pacientes que realizaram estudos Gated-SPECT por indicação clínica, sendo subdividida em dois grupos: Grupo I (GI) – pacientes com a informação clínica de enfarte agudo do miocárdio (EAM); Grupo II (GII) – pacientes com a informação clínica de isquémia. Por cada paciente adquiriram-se imagens estáticas torácico-abdominais e dois estudos Gated-SPECT do miocárdio (protocolo de um dia esforço/repouso). Nas imagens estáticas definiram-se regiões de interesse (Regions of interest – ROIs) para calcular os ICs. Nos estudos Gated-SPECT utilizou-se o software Quantitative Gated SPECT/Quantitative Perfusion SPECT para calcular a Fração de Ejeção do Ventrículo Esquerdo (FEVE). Efetuou-se análise estatística descritiva para caracterização da amostra. Aplicou-se o teste de Spearman para avaliar a correlação entre a FEVE e os IC por grupo de pacientes. O Teste de Willcoxon foi usado para comparar FEVE em repouso e em esforço. Resultados – Nos estudos Gated-SPECT em esforço não se verificou correlação estatisticamente significativa entre a FEVE e os ICs, para GI e GII; em repouso existe correlação positiva estatisticamente significativa entre a FEVE e os ICs, para GI; para GII não se verificou correlação. Na comparação dos valores de FEVE em esforço e repouso nos dois grupos constatou-se a existência de diferenças estatisticamente significativas, sendo a FEVE em Esforço, Saúde & Tecnologia, N.º 11 (2014): Maio 2014

Objetivos – Avaliar e comparar a eficácia de três diferentes tipos de treino propriocetivo e a relação desta na redução da incidência de entorses da tibiotársica em atletas juvenis masculinos de futebol 11. Método – Foram avaliadas e comparadas a força muscular na tibiotársica e a propriocetividade entre três grupos: um com treino propriocetivo com supervisão (GE), outro sem supervisão (GC1) e outro com treino de gesto técnico (GC2) durante um período de nove semanas, duas a três vezes por semana. Introdução – A estimativa da função renal relativa (FRR) através de cintigrafia renal (CR) com ácido dimercaptossuccínico marcado com tecnécio-99 metastável (99mTc-DMSA) pode ser influenciada pela profundidade renal (PR), atendendo ao efeito de atenuação por parte dos tecidos moles que envolvem os rins. Dado que raramente é conhecida esta mesma PR, diferentes métodos de correção de atenuação (CA) foram desenvolvidos, nomeadamente os que utilizam fórmulas empíricas, como os de Raynaud, de Taylor ou de Tonnesen, ou recorrendo à aplicação direta da média geométrica (MG). Objetivos – Identificar a influência dos diferentes métodos de CA na quantificação da função renal relativa através da CR com 99mTc-DMSA e avaliar a respetiva variabilidade dos resultados de PR. Metodologia – Trinta e um pacientes com indicação para realização de CR com 99mTc-DMSA foram submetidos ao mesmo protocolo de aquisição. O processamento foi efetuado por dois operadores independentes, três vezes por exame, variando para o mesmo processamento o método de determinação da FRR: Raynaud, Taylor, Tonnesen, MG ou sem correção de atenuação (SCA). Aplicou-se o teste de Friedman para o estudo da influência dos diferentes métodos de CA e a correlação de Pearson para a associação e significância dos valores de PR com as variáveis idade, peso e altura. Resultados – Da aplicação do teste de Friedman verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os vários métodos (p=0,000), excetuando as comparações SCA/Raynaud, Tonnesen/MG e Taylor/MG (p=1,000) para ambos os rins. A correlação de Pearson demonstra que a variável peso apresenta uma correlação forte positiva com todos os métodos de cálculo da PR. Conclusões – O método de Taylor, entre os três métodos de cálculo de PR, é o que apresenta valores de FRR mais próximos da MG. Introdução – A dosimetria in vivo é útil na medição da dose administrada aos doentes durante o tratamento, avaliando diferenças significativas entre a dose prescrita e a dose administrada no volume alvo, bem como nos órgãos de risco. Objetivo – Comparar a dose medida com a dose calculada em doentes com tumores de mama com e sem filtro físico. Métodos – Realizaram-se medições da dose na pele, utilizando díodos tipo–p, para os campos tangenciais e respetivos field-in-field em 38 doentes. Resultados – Verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos campos tangenciais open (ρ=0,000). Discussão – Estudos reportam desvios sistemáticos significativos entre a dose calculada e a dose medida. Introdução – A cintigrafia de perfusão cerebral (CPC) é uma técnica imagiológica que permite a obtenção de imagens da biodistribuição de um radiofármaco, cuja captação reflete a perfusão cerebral regional. Neste sentido, a escala de cores utilizada possui um papel importante na interpretação clínica destas imagens. Objetivo – Estudar a influência das escalas de cores na avaliação qualitativa da cintigrafia de perfusão cerebral e estimar quais as escalas mais adequadas para a análise visual. Métodos – Trinta e um estudos de CPC foram visualmente analisados por 15 operadores divididos em duas classes: operadores sem experiência profissional (10) e operadores com experiência profissional (5). As imagens foram analisadas com recurso às escalas de cor Cool, Gray, Gray Invert, Thermal e Perfusion. Para a escala de cores Cool, a análise das imagens foi realizada através de um sistema de classificação semiquantitativo por scores. As restantes escalas foram avaliadas por comparação com a análise das imagens efetuada com a escala Cool. Para avaliar a variabilidade interoperador dos resultados obtidos para a escala Cool recorreu-se ao teste estatístico não paramétrico de Friedman, sendo que os resultados relativos às escalas Gray, Gray Invert, Thermal e Perfusion foram analisados com base na percentagem de símbolos (>, Saúde & Tecnologia, N.º 18 (2017): Novembro 2017

Cemeteries are potential environmental reservoirs of pathogenic microorganisms from organic matter decomposition. This study aimed to characterize the microbial contamination in three cemeteries, and more specifically in grave diggers’ facilities. One active sampling method (impingement method) and several passive sampling methods (swabs, settled dust, settled dust filters and electrostatic dust cloths—EDC) were employed. The molecular detection of Aspergillus sections and SARS-CoV-2, as well as mycotoxin analysis, screening of azole resistance, and cytotoxicity measurement were also conducted. Total bacteria contamination was 80 CFU.m−2 in settled dust samples, reached 849 CFU.m−2 in EDC and 20,000 CFU.m−2 in swabs, and ranged from 5000 to 10,000 CFU.m−2 in filters. Gram-negative bacteria (VRBA) were only observed in in settled dust samples (2.00x105 CFU.m−2). Regarding Aspergillus sp., the highest counts were obtained in DG18 (18.38%) and it was not observed in azole-supplemented SDA media. SARS-CoV-2 and the targeted Aspergillus sections were not detected. Mycophenolic acid was detected in one settled dust sample. Cytotoxic effects were observed for 94.4% filters and 5.6% EDC in A549 lung epithelial cells, and for 50.0% filters and 5.6% EDC in HepG2 cells. Future studies are needed in this occupational setting to implement more focused risk management measures. publishersversion published

Previous studies anticipated that microorganisms and their metabolites in waste will increase as a consequence of a decreased collection frequency and due to differences in what kind of waste is bagged before collection leading to an increased exposure of workers handling the waste. This study aim was to investigate the microbial contamination present in the waste collection trucks (WCT) and in the support facilities (waste collection station - WCS). It was applied a multi-approach protocol using active (air sampling by impingement and impaction) and passive (surface swabs, electrostatic dust cloths and settled dust) sampling methods. The screening of azole-resistance, the investigation of mycotoxins and the assessment of the elicited biological responses in vitro were also carried out aiming recognizing the possible health effects of waste collection drivers. SARS-CoV-2 detection was also performed. In WCS only air samples had contamination in all the four sampling sites (canteen, operational removal core, operational removal center, and administrative service). Among all the analyzed matrices from the WCT a higher percentage of total bacterial counts and Gram-was detected in swabs (66.93%; 99.36%). In WCS the most common species were Penicillium sp. (43.98%) and Cladosporium sp. (24.68%), while on WCT Aspergillus sp. (4.18%) was also one of the most found. In the azole resistance screening Aspergillus genera was not observed in the azole-supplemented media. SARS-CoV-2 was not detected in any of the environmental samples collected, but Aspergillus section Fumigati was detected in 5 samples. Mycotoxins were not detected in EDC from WCS, while in WCT they were detected in filters (N = 1) and in settled dust samples (N = 16). In conclusion, our study reveals that a comprehensive sampling approach using active and passive sampling (e.g. settled dust sampling for a representative mycotoxin evaluation) and combined analytic methods (i.e., culture-based and molecular) is an important asset in microbial exposure assessments. Concerning the waste collection exposure scenario, the results of this study unveiled a complex exposure, particularly to fungi and their metabolites.
