4. The concept of integration in mixed methods research : a step-by-step guide using an example study in physiotherapy

Abstract

Background Integration is a unique attribute of Mixed Methods Research (MMR). However, some MMR studies, published in the field of physiotherapy and other allied health professions, have illustrated a lack of understanding of the concept of integration. Aims The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for integrating elements of mixed methods research in order to effectively support evidence-based practice in health. Methods The concept of integration of findings is explained with reference to the authors recent PhD study, which used a mixed methods exploratory sequential design. This article describes how the author used a narrative joint display to integrate findings from both the qualitative and survey phases of the study. Then, a step-by-step approach is introduced to guide the interpretation and integration of the findings. Results This four-step approach demonstrates integration of the two different datasets: Creating a joint display, linking activity, establishing relationships, and interpreting and reporting. Tables and Figures are used to support detailed description and illustration of the integration process. Discussion A joint display provides a visual representation of how the qualitative and quantitative findings in a MMR study can be integrated. In this way, interpretation of the data drawn from this process extend beyond the individual findings of each study component to facilitate a greater understanding of complex health care issues.

9. Parents' Experiences in Role Negotiation within an Infant Services Program

Abstract

Effective partnerships between families and health providers have been identified as the cornerstone of family-centered care. Role negotiation between parents and rehabilitation professionals is recognized as a key component to developing this effective partnership. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of the role-negotiation process among parents of young children. An exploratory qualitative research approach was used and in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 parents of children under the age of 3 years who were receiving services through an early intervention rehabilitation program. A 6-phase interpretive thematic framework guided the data analysis. Two major themes emerged from the data: (1) roles and expectations, and (2) the evolution of a symbiotic relationship. Parents recognized and defined the roles they assumed in their child's care and had distinct expectations of the roles attributed to rehabilitation professionals. No formalized role-negotiation process was identified. Instead, the evolution of a symbiotic parent-professional relationship was described, in which dependency on professionals to meet parent specific needs subsequently fostered their assumption of primary responsibility. This relationship appeared to be the precursor to the development of effective parent-professional collaboration and key to parent satisfaction with rehabilitation services.

11. Exploring the Literacy Difficulties of Physically Disabled People

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the literacy difficulties experienced by people with physical disabilities, and the factors that prevent them from improving their literacy skills. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 individuals with physical disabilities who defined themselves as having literacy difficulties. Four common themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) a wide range of mostly negative emotional responses, (b) numerous difficulties experienced at school, (c) troubling attitudes and expectations of others, and (d) a continued motivation to improve literacy skills. Implications for practitioners include more training to address the needs of physically disabled learners. This may mean experimenting with technical devices that facilitate learning, and consulting with occupational therapists. (Contains 3 tables.)

12. Management of Chronic Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace from the Perspective of Older Employees : A Mixed Methods Research Study

Abstract

(1) Background: This mixed methods research (MMR) study explored older employees’ experiences of chronic musculoskeletal disorders (CMSDs) in relation to their employment, their perspectives on managing these conditions in the workplace and the strategies used to facilitate and maintain their roles and responsibilities. The services offered to them were also identified. (2) Methods: A mixed methods exploratory sequential design was implemented. In the first qualitative phase, 16 semi-structured interviews gathered in-depth information from older employees. The findings informed the development of an online questionnaire in the survey phase, which was administered to older employees (N = 107). Both sets of findings were then integrated using a narrative joint display. (3) Results: The phenomena of presenteeism and leaveism were important components of employees’ strategies for managing their condition. The integrated findings highlighted the roles of employers, managers and social support in encouraging disclosure and supporting the management of CMSDs. The results also emphasised how self-management and professional health services are crucial for sustaining employability. (4) Conclusions: Current challenges call for employers to identify effective ways to support the ageing workforce and invest in training opportunities for managers and collaborative opportunities with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders. A flexible, empathetic and resourceful work environment is optimal for supporting sustained employability for an ageing workforce.

21. Reconsidering Transitional Justice: Revolutions and Regime Change in 20th-century China.

Abstract

The transitional justice literature has, for decades, sought to understand and advocate for mechanisms through which a society may transition from a period of autocracy and mass atrocity into one of democracy, peace and stability. However, this field has left certain geographic regions under-examined — including, for example, events taking place in 20th-century China. Seeking to augment the literature's consideration of transitional justice, this article employs the case study method to examine two pivotal events in China's recent history: the 1949 Communist Revolution and the Gang of Four Trials in 1979. It is argued that incorporating these examples into the literature could supplement our understanding of transitional justice and that, by broadening the lens on this concept, events that have long existed on the margins could be internalized to enrich the field's discussion. In order to accomplish this, the article puts forward a new framework through which transitional justice examples may be analysed — employing a graphical aid to visually designate both the type of justice sought and the degree of transition achieved. Abstract

Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights protects the right to freedom of religion and conscience. The language of Article 9(1) has been interpreted by the European Court of Human Rights as including protections for acts of proselytism, when properly committed and respectful of the rights and freedoms of others. This was the view taken in the foundational Article 9 case of the Court, Kokkinakis v. Greece. In the decades since Kokkinakis , however, the view of the Court on proselytism appears to have shifted, in particular in Article 9 cases involving religious garments. This article seeks to determine whether the Court is consistent in its views on proselytism between these religious garment cases and earlier examples of Article 9 case law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background and Purpose. Research in rehabilitation has been focused primarily on provision of care issues and treatment intervention outcome measures. The input of the clients involved has not been solicited in a systematic way As a physical therapist practicing in rehabilitation, the researcher because increasingly aware of a discrepancy between the perception of spinal cord injury and its consequences held by health professionals and those people who experience the injury over many years It was recognition of this discrepancy that formed the background from which this study evolved. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore individual conceptions of the experience of spinal cord injury from the perspective of adult learning. Subjects and Methods. Semistructured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 individuals who bad sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury 3 to 5 years prior to the interview Questions asked were nondirective and designed to trigger accounts of meaningful aspects of the subjects' disability experience since their injury Data analysis entailed several thorough readings of the interview transcripts from which three categories of meaning developed and for which criteria were established. Results. The categories of meaning--rediscovery of self, redefining disability, and establishing a new identity--represented commonalities of conceptions of the spinal cord injury and the resulting disability experience The continuity of "self" was of primary importance to the ongoing experience of disability, and the learning involved was diverse and intensely personal. Strategies used by the subjects in achieving these categories are discussed. Conclusion and Although the contribution of the rehabilitation instruction, and particularly that of individual health care professionals, was acknowledged by the subjects, the adequacy of the preparation of clinicians for their role as adult educators in the rehabilitation process is questioned A theory of transformative learning is introduced as a possible explanatory model for the study findings, application of which may facilitate a more client-centered approach to rehabilitation practice.
