Abstract

Much of the Earth's biosphere has been appropriated for the production of harvestable biomass in the form of food, fuel and fibre. Here we show that the simplification and intensification of these systems and their growing connection to international markets has yielded a global production ecosystem that is homogenous, highly connected and characterized by weakened internal feedbacks. We argue that these features converge to yield high and predictable supplies of biomass in the short term, but create conditions for novel and pervasive risks to emerge and interact in the longer term. Steering the global production ecosystem towards a sustainable trajectory will require the redirection of finance, increased transparency and traceability in supply chains, and the participation of a multitude of players, including integrated 'keystone actors' such as multinational corporations. This Perspective examines the global production ecosystem through the lenses of connectivity, diversity and feedback, and proposes measures that will increase its stability and sustainability., Author(s): M. Recombinant subunit vaccines are an attractive alternative for pandemic vaccines compared to traditional vaccine technologies. In particular, polyanhydride nanoparticles encapsulating subunit proteins have been shown to enhance humoral and cell-mediated immunity and provide protection upon lethal challenge. In this work, a recombinant H5 hemagglutinin trimer (H53) was produced and encapsulated into polyanhydride nanoparticles. The studies performed indicated that the recombinant H53 antigen was a robust immunogen. Immunizing mice with H53 encapsulated into polyanhydride nanoparticles induced high neutralizing antibody titers and enhanced CD4+ T cell recall responses in mice. Finally, the H53-based polyanhydride nanovaccine induced protective immunity against a low-pathogenic H5N1 viral challenge. Informatics analyses indicated that mice receiving the nanovaccine formulations and subsequently challenged with virus were similar to naïve mice that were not challenged. The current studies provide a basis to further exploit the advantages of polyanhydride nanovaccines in pandemic scenarios. Keywords: polymer, nanoparticle, vaccine, subunit, neutralizing antibody

Abstract

This paper describes a student essay competition with the title "What makes a good engineering lecturer?" run by the Engineering Subject Centre of the UK Higher Education Academy. The competition was intended primarily to provide engineering lecturers with general feedback. The aim of the paper is to make the outcomes of the competition available in a convenient form to those who might be interested--particularly engineering lecturers. The paper describes the competition, sets out the approach used to analyse the essays, presents the content in terms of the main attributes identified, and compares these with published lists of recommended attributes. The paper lets the students speak for themselves through extensive quotation. (Contains 1 table.)

Abstract

An invitational conference organized by the Netherlands Society of Physicians for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NVAVG) and the European Association of Intellectual Disability Medicine (MAMH), in collaboration with the Erasmus Medical Center's Department of Specialist Training for Physicians for People with Intellectual Disabilities, had as its aim the development and issuance of an European manifesto on adequate health care for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). This paper provides an overview of the basis for the conference and the manifesto and lays out recommendations for the implementation of the manifesto's main points. The group's product, the "European Manifesto on Basic Standards of Health Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities," summarizes the core elements of adequate health care for individuals with ID, and offers guidance on how Europe's nations may address deficiencies in health provision for people with ID. The manifesto's main points include a call for greater available and accessible health care, increasing the competencies in ID of health professionals, educators, and researchers, a greater reliance on a multidisciplinary approach to health care, more specialist services, and a proactive emphasis on personal health management.
