Spirit landed on the floor of Gusev Crater and conducted initial operations on soil covered, rock-strewn cratered plains underlain by olivine-bearing basalts. Plains surface rocks are covered by wind-blown dust and show evidence for surface enrichment of soluble species as vein and void-filling materials and coatings. The surface enrichment is the result of a minor amount of transport and deposition by aqueous processes. Layered granular deposits were discovered in the Columbia Hills, with outcrops that tend to dip conformably with the topography. The granular rocks are interpreted to be volcanic ash and/or impact ejecta deposits that have been modified by aqueous fluids during and/or after emplacement. Soils consist of basaltic deposits that are weakly cohesive, relatively poorly sorted, and covered by a veneer of wind blown dust. The soils have been homogenized by wind transport over at least the several kilometer length scale traversed by the rover. Mobilization of soluble species has occurred within at least two soil deposits examined. The presence of mono-layers of coarse sand on wind-blown bedforms, together with even spacing of granule-sized surface clasts, suggest that some of the soil surfaces encountered by Spirit have not been modified by wind for some time. On the other hand, dust deposits on the surface and rover deck have changed during the course of the mission. Detection of dust devils, monitoring of the dust opacity and lower boundary layer, and coordinated experiments with orbiters provided new insights into atmosphere-surface dynamics.

Global data sets returned by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), Mars Odyssey, and Mars Express spacecraft and recent analyses of Martian meteorites suggest that most of the major geological events of Martian history occurred within the first billion years of solar system formation. This period was a time of heavy impact bombardment of the inner solar system, a process that strongly overprinted much of the Martian geological record from that time. Geophysical signatures nonetheless remain from that period in the Martian crust, and several geochemical tracers of early events are found in Martian meteorites. Collectively, these observations provide insight into the earliest era in Martian history when the conditions favoring life were best satisfied.

The search for evidence of life on Mars is a highly interdisciplinary enterprise which extends beyond the traditional life sciences. Mars conceivably had a pervasive ancient biosphere which may have persisted even to the present, but only in subsurface environments. Understanding the history of Mars' global environment, including its inventory of volatile elements, is a crucial part of the search strategy. Those deposits (minerals, sediments, etc.) which could have and retained a record of earlier biological activity must be identified and examined. While the importance of. seeking another biosphere has not diminished during the years since the Viking mission, the strategy for Mars exploration certainly has been modified by later discoveries. The Viking mission itself demonstrated that the present day surface environment of Mars is hostile to life as we know it. Thus, to search effectively for life on Mars, be it extant or extinct, we now must greatly improve our understanding of Mars the planet. Such an understanding will help us broaden our search beyond the Viking lander sites, both back in time to earlier epochs and elsewhere to other sites and beneath the surface. Exobiology involves much more than simply a search for extant life beyond Earth. It addresses the prospect of long-extinct biospheres and also the chemistry, organic and otherwise, which either led to life or which occurred on rocky planets that remained lifeless. Even a Mars without a biosphere would reveal much about life. How better to understand the origin and impact of a biosphere than to compare Earth with another similar but lifeless planet? Still, several relatively recent discoveries offer encouragement that a Martian biosphere indeed might have existed. The ancient Martian surface was extensively sculptured by volcanism and the activity of liquid water. Such observations invoke impressions of an ancient martian atmosphere and environment that resembled ancient Earth more than present-day Mars. Since Viking, we have learned that our own biosphere began prior to 3.5 billion years ago, during an early period when our solar system apparently was sustaining clement conditions on at least two of its planets. Also, we have found that microorganisms can survive, even flourish, in environments more extreme in temperature and water availability than had been previously recognized. The common ancestor of life on Earth probably was adapted to elevated temperatures, raising the possibility that hydrothermal systems played a central role in sustaining our early biosphere. If a biosphere ever arose on Mars, at least some of its constituents probably dwelled in the subsurface. Even today, conditions on Mars and Earth become more similar with increasing depth beneath their surfaces. For example, under the martian permafrost, the geothermal gradient very likely maintains liquid water in environments which resemble aquifers on Earth. Indigenous bacteria have recently been recovered from deep aquifers on Earth. Liquid groundwater very likely persisted throughout Mars' history. Thus, martian biota, if they ever existed, indeed might have survived in subsurface environments.

Many large outflow channels terminate in the low-lying northern plains. If the outflow channels formed by running water, as appears likely, then standing bodies of water must have accumulated at the ends of the channels. Most of the observed channels, and hence the bodies of water, are post-Noachian. They formed after the period for which we have the most abundant evidence of climate change. While it has been speculated that the post-Noachian period has experienced large, episodic, climatic excursions, this paper takes the more conservative view that the climatic conditions on Mars, at least from mid-Hesperian onward, were mostly similar to the climatic conditions that prevail in the present epoch. Thus obliquity variations are taken into account, but massive climate changes induced by the floods are considered so improbable that they are ignored.

Because Mars has had a history of diverse erosional and depositional styles, a variety of erosional landforms and sedimentary deposits can be seen on Viking orbiter images. Here we review how geologic processes involving rock, water, and structure have controlled erosion and sedimentation on Mars. Additionally, we review how further studies will help refine our understanding of these processes.

Three images of Venus have been returned so far by the Galileo spacecraft following an encounter with the planet on UT February 10, 1990. The images, taken at effective wavelengths of 4200 and 9900 A, characterize the global motions and distribution of haze near the Venus cloud tops and, at the latter wavelength, deep within the main cloud. Previously undetected markings are clearly seen in the near-infrared image. The global distribution of these features, which have maximum contrasts of 3 percent, is different from that recorded at short wavelengths. In particular, the 'polar collar', which is omnipresent in short wavelength images, is absent at 9900 A. The maximum contrast in the features at 4200 A is about 20 percent. The optical performance of the camera is described and is judged to be nominal.

The Martian valley networks and outflow channels provide persuasive evidence that large bodies of groundwater were present on Mars throughout much of its early geologic history. However, little attention was focused on how these volatile reservoirs may have responded to the thermal evolution of the early Martian crust. In this regard, one process that has likely been of critical importance to the subsurface hydrologic evolution of Mars is thermal vapor diffusion. Various aspects of the thermal vapor diffusion process on Mars are discussed.

Water is distributed differently on Earth and on Mars and the differences may have implications for the accretion of the two planets and the formation of their atmospheres. The Earth's mantle appears to contain at least several times the water content of the Martian mantle even accounting for differences in plate tectonics. One explanation is that the Earth's surface melted during accretion, as a result of development of a steam atmosphere, thereby allowing impact-devolitalized water at the surface to dissolve into the Earth's interior. In contrast, because of Mars' smaller size and greater distance from the Sun, the Martian surface may not have melted, so that the devolatilized water could not dissolve into the surface. A second possibility is suggested by the siderophile elements in the Earth's mantle, which indicates the Earth acquired a volatile-rich veneer after the core formed. Mars may have acquired a late volatile-rich veneer, but it did not get folded into the interior as with the Earth, but instead remained as a water rich veneer. This perception of Mars with a wet surface but dry interior is consistent with our knowledge of Mars' geologic history.

Summaries are given of the spectral calibration, compositional parameters, nearside color, and limb and farside color of the Moon. The farside of the Moon, a large area of lunar crust, is dominated by heavily cratered terrain and basin deposits that represent the products of the first half billion years of crustal evolution. Continuing analysis of the returned lunar samples suggest a magma ocean and/or serial magmatism model for evolution of the primordial lunar crust. However, testing either hypothesis requires compositional information about the crustal stratigraphy and lateral heterogeneity. Resolution of this important planetary science issue is dependent on additional data. New Galileo multispectral images indicate previously unknown local and regional compositional diversity of the farside crust. Future analysis will focus on individual features and a more detailed assessment of crustal stratigraphy and heterogeneity.

Geological evidence for large amounts of water at the Martian surface appears to be in conflict with geochemical evidence from SNC meteorites that suggests that the Mars mantle is dry and should have lost almost all of its initially large inventory of water during accretion. Here, several possibilities are suggested as to how the apparently conflicting data from two sources may be reconciled. The considerations examined indicate that several plausible explanations for the apparent conflict between geochemical evidence of little water on Mars and geologic evidence of abundant water. One possible conclusion is that Mars has a primitive volatile-rich crust that has been partly overplated with young, dry, mantle-derived volcanoes of which we have samples in the SNC meteorites.

Topics discussed in this volume include the reappraisal of the moon and Mars/Phobos/Deimos; the origin and evolution of planetary and satellite systems; asteroids, comets, and dust (a post-IRAS perspective); satellite dynamics; future planetary missions; and orbital debris. Papers are presented on a comparison of the chemistry of moon and Mars, the use of a mobile surface radar to study the atmosphere and ionosphere, and laser-ionization studies with the technical models of the LIMA-D/Phobos. Attention is given to planetogonic scenarios and the evolution of relatively mass-rich preplanetary disks, the kinetic behavior of planetesimals revolving around the sun, the planetary evolution of Mars, and pre- and post-IRAS asteroid taxonomies. Consideration is also given to ocean tides and tectonic plate motions in high-precision orbit determination, the satellite altimeter calibration techniques, a theory of the motion of an artificial satellite in the earth atmosphere, ESA plans for planetary exploration, and the detection of earth orbiting objects by IRAS.

Principal science goals for exploration of Mars are to establish the chemical, isotopic, and physical state of Martian material, the nature of major surface-forming processes and their time scales, and the past and present biological potential of the planet. Many of those goals can only be met by detailed analyses of atmospheric gases and carefully selected samples of fresh rocks, weathered rocks, soils, sediments, and ices. The high-fidelity mineral separations, complex chemical treatments, and ultrasensitive instrument systems required for key measurements, as well as the need to adapt analytical strategies to unanticipated results, point to Earth-based laboratory analyses on returned Martian samples as the best means for meeting the stated objectives.

This paper is mainly concerned with the nature of volcanic eruptions on Io, taking into account questions regarding the presence of silicates or sulfur as principal component. Attention is given to the generation of silicate magma, the viscous dissipation in the melt zone, thermal anomalies at eruption sites, and Ionian volcanism. According to the information available about Io, it appears that its volcanism and hence its surface materials are dominantly silicic. Several percent of volatile materials such as sulfur, but also including sodium- and potassium-rich materials, may also be present. The volatile materials at the surface are continually vaporized and melted as a result of the high rates of silicate volcanism.

High-resolution Viking orbiter images show evidenced for quasi-viscous relaxation of topography. The relaxation is believed to be due to creep deformation of ice in near-surface materials. The global distribution of the inferred ground ice shows a pronounced latitudinal dependence. The equatorial regions of Mars appear to be ice-poor, while the heavily cratered terrain poleward of + or - 30 deg latitude appears to be ice-rich. The style of creep poleward of + or - 30 deg varies with latitude, possibly due to variations in ice rheology with temperature. The distribution suggests that ice at low latitudes, which is not in equilibrium with the present atmosphere, has been lost via sublimation and diffusion through the regolith, thereby causing a net poleward transport of ice over martian history.

Most of the old cratered highlands of Mars are dissected by branching river valleys that appear to have been cut by running water, yet liquid water is unstable everywhere on the Martian surface. In the equatorial region, where most of the valleys are observed, even ice is unstable. It has been suggested, therefore, that Mars had an early denser atmosphere with sufficient greenhouse warming to allow the existence of liquid water. Here, it is suggested instead that during periods of very high obliquities, ice could accumulate at low latitudes as a result of sustained sublimation of ice from the poles and transport of the water vapor equatorwards. At low latitudes, the water vapor would saturate the atmosphere and condense onto the surface, where it would accumulate until lower obliquities prevailed. The mechanism is efficient only at the very high obliquities that occurred before formation of Tharsis very early in the planet's history, but limited equatorial ice accumulation could also have occurred at the highest obliquities during the rest of the planet's history. Partial melting of the ice could have provided runoff to form the channels or replenish the groundwater system.

Tidal theory and observational evidence indicates that about 1 w/sq. m. of energy is released at the surface of Io. In order to place limits on how much tidal energy can be dissipated within a rigid lithosphere, depth-temperature profiles were calculated for different lithosphere thickness assuming that the tidal energy was dissipated uniformly throughout the lithosphere. Thus a thick lithosphere implies that a significant fraction of the tidal energy is dissipated below the depth where solidus temperatures are reached. One possibility is that Io has a crust consisting of a low melting temperature fraction such as basalt, overlying a mantle of a high melting temperature fraction such as peridotite. Thus, if the lithosphere of Io is thicker than 30 km, as appears probable, then high rates of silicate volcanism are implied and a significant fraction of the tidal energy must be dissipated by viscous deformation rather than rigid flexure.

The geologic history of the terrestrial planets is outlined in light of recent exploration and the revolution in geologic thinking. Among the topics considered are planet formation; planetary craters, basins, and general surface characteristics; tectonics; planetary atmospheres; and volcanism.

The following aspects of the planet Venus are discussed: orbit, rotation, composition, wind erosion, topography, surface roughness, gravity, and tectonics. The Venera satellites, Pioneer space probes, and Mariner space probes involved in Venusian exploration are enumerated.

The following aspects of the planet Earth are discussed: plate tectonics, the interior of the planet, the formation of the Earth, and the evolution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. The Earth's crust, mantle, and core are examined along with the bulk composition of the planet.

The nature of comets and asteroids is reviewed briefly. The formation of planets is examined. Meteorites and chondrites a meteoritic subclass, are discussed.

The following aspects of the planet Mars are addressed: general properties of the surface, the atmosphere and surface volatiles, craters and crater ages, volcanoes, wind erosion, and the polar regions.

Exploratory work on the structure of the Ionian lithosphere is reported. The approach is to examine temperature profiles within the lithosphere that result from different distributions of sulfur and silicates and different conductive heat fluxes, then compare such profiles with observations in the expectation that only a limited set of the profiles are possible. In this preliminary work some rather simplistic assumptions were taken and the report should be viewed more as a demonstration of a method rather than a presentation of results.

The valley networks of Mars are widely believed to have formed at a time when climatic conditions on the planet were significantly different from those that currently prevail. This view arises from the following observations: (1) the valleys form integrated branching networks which suggests fluid drainage, and water is the most plausible fluid, (2) the present atmosphere contains only minute amounts of water, (3) the networks appear to be more akin to terrestrial valleys that are eroded by streams of modest discharges than features that form by catastrophic floods, and (4) small streams of water will rapidly freeze under present climatic conditions. Climatic conditions at the time of formation of the valleys are studied based on the assumption that they were cut by running water.

The freezing of small Martian streams is modelled for a variety of climatic conditions, on the supposition that the Martian atmosphere may have been considerably thicker in the past, at the time of the formation of the valley networks. This model examines the energy balance at the upper and lower surfaces of ice on streams, in order to determine the rate at which ice thickens with time. Results indicate that freezing rates are not strongly dependent on atmospheric pressure, and, under windy conditions, dependence on atmospheric pressure is even weaker. It is noted that the main problem in valley formation is in initiating the flow. Groundwater seepage alone is inadequate, due to the difficulty of groundwater system replenishment.

Knowledge regarding the geology of the terrestrial planets has increased considerably during the last four years. The present investigation provides a brief summary of work during these years on the geology of Mercury, Venus, moon, and Mars. Following the Mariner 10 encounter with Mercury in 1974, the geologic history of the planet was broadly outlined by Strom (1979). McCauley et al. (1981) recognized several facies of ejecta around Caloris. Hostetler and Drake (1980) showed that unless Mercury received more than 60-70 percent of its thermal energy from tidal interactions, it must have undergone early, almost global melting. Knowledge of the Venusian surface has increased substantially over the last few years both through improvement of earth-based observations and in connection with the Pioneer Venus mission. A topographic map of Venus is presented. Attention is also given to the composition and character of lunar highlands, the evolution of different maria, photographs obtained of almost the entire planet Mars, and Martian craters and volcanism.

The distribution and ages of Martian channels and valleys, which are generally believed to have been cut by running water, are examined with particular emphasis on the small branching networks referred to as runoff channels or valley networks. Valleys at latitudes from 65 deg S to 65 deg N were surveyed on Viking images at resolutions between 125 and 300 m. Almost all of the valleys are found in the old cratered terrain, in areas characterized by high elevations, low albedos and low violet/red ratios. The networks are deduced to have formed early in the history of the planet, with a formation rate declining rapidly shortly after the decline of the cratering rate 3.9 billion years ago. Two types of outflow channels are distinguished: unconfined, in which broad swaths of terrain are scoured, and confined, in which flow is restricted to discrete channels. Both types start at local sources, and have formed episodically throughout Martian history. Fretted channels, found mainly in two latitude belts characterized by relatively rapid erosion along escarpments, are explained by the lateral enlargement of other channels by mass wasting.

The mechanical properties of elemental sulfur are such that the upper crust of Io cannot be primarily sulfur. For heat flows in the range 100-1000 ergs/sq cm sec sulfur becomes ductile within several hundred meters of the surface and would prevent the formation of calderas with depths greater than this. However, the one caldera for which precise depth data are available is 2 km deep, and this value may be typical. A study of the mechanical equilibrium of simple slopes shows that the depth to the zone of rapid ductile flow strongly controls the maximum heights for sulfur slopes. Sulfur scarps with heights greater than 1 km will fail for all heat flows greater than 180 ergs/sq cm sec and slope angles greater than 22.5 deg. The observed relief on Io is inconsistent with that anticipated for a predominantly sulfur crust. However, a silicate crust with several percent sulfur included satisfies both the mechanical constraints and the observed presence of sulfur on Io.

The geological aspects of solar-system exploration were considered by first showing how geologic data are related to space science in general, and, second, by discussing the approach used in planetary geology. The origin, evolution, and distribution of matter condensed in the form of planets, satellites, comets, and asteroids were studied. Terrestrial planets, comets, and asteroids, and the solid satellites of the outer planets are discussed. Jupiter and Saturn, in particular, have satellites of prime importance. Geophysics, geochemistry, geodesy, cartography, and other disciplines concerned with the solid planets were all included.

The most effective strategy for the geochemical study of a planet is to proceed systematically with the mineralogical and chemical characterization of its materials in accordance with geologically determined priorities. It is insufficient merely to analyze chemically the surface rocks. To appreciate the meaning of a chemical analysis, some assessment must be made of the geologic history of the sample - what its source and mode of origin are and what processes have operated upon the sample to cause chemical fractionation. Determination of mineralogy, texture, lithology, and other properties of the rock that might be relevant to origin is, therefore, necessary.
