In the framework of a continuous search for technological innovations that allow fruit growers to practice a more competitive and sustainable fruit production, satellite-derived vegetation indexes could be used as tools to support the decision-making processes of technicians and territory planners. The objectives of the present study were to characterize phenological stages of cherry trees (Prunus avium L.) in the Maule region of Chile using field observations and to evaluate the capacity of multispectral satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) and the derived vegetative indexes (NDVI, SAVI), as tools for remotely identifying these phenological stages in cherry trees. Phenological transition stages in cherry trees, estimated from Landsat 7 (ETM+) data did not agree with in situ measurements of phenology made at the different sites. Landsat 7 (ETM+) derived vegetation indices (NDVI, SAVI) could discriminate only gross changes associated with an increase and then a decrease of canopy greenness in cherry trees, but could not discriminate between successive phenological states in which the proportion of foliage is only slightly different. The number of days after the first of July (Southern Hemisphere) tended to be a less variable indicator than growing degree-days (GDD) for predicting the occurrence of different phenological stages in cherry trees. RESUMEN En el marco de una búsqueda continua de innovaciones tecnológicas que permitan a los fruticultores practicar una producción frutícola más competitiva y sostenible, el uso de índices de vegetación derivados de satélites podría ser utilizado como herramienta para apoyar la toma de decisiones por parte de técnicos y planificadores del territorio. Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron caracterizar las etapas fenológicas de los cerezos (Prunus avium L.) en la región del Maule-Chile utilizando observaciones de campo y evaluar la capacidad de las imágenes satelitales multiespectrales (Landsat ETM +) y los índices vegetativos derivados (NDVI, SAVI), como herramientas para la identificación remota de las distintas etapas fenológicas en cerezo. La estimación de las etapas de transición fenológica en cerezos, estimadas a partir de los datos de Landsat 7 (ETM +), no coinciden con sufiente robustez con las mediciones in situ de fenología medidas en los diferentes sitios. Los índices de vegetación (NDVI, SAVI) derivados de Landsat 7 (ETM +), permiten discriminar sólo cambios gruesos asociados con un aumento y leugo disminución del verdor en el follaje, pero no permiten discriminar entre estados cercanos de fenología en los que la proporción de follaje es sólo ligeramente diferente. En este estudio, el número de días acumulados a partir del primero de julio (Hemisferio Sur) tiende a ser un indicador menos variable que los Grado-día (GDD) para predecir la ocurrencia de diferentes etapas fenológicas en los cerezos.

An effective way to control post-harvest rotting of table grapes is the use of sulfur dioxide (SO2). However, under certain conditions, the use of SO2 can cause significant loss, mainly associated with bleaching of the berries. Therefore, it is believed that the use of bags with and without copper nanoparticles that modify the atmosphere will allow for the control of Botrytis cinerea as well as the ability to dispense with the use of sulfur dioxide generation. The objective of this test is to evaluate the use of bags with and without copper nanoparticles that modify atmosphere and to evaluate their ability to control post-harvest B. cinerea, as well as their effect on the conservation of physical and chemical characteristics of table grapes. The results indicate that the use of air bags with or without copper nanoparticles that modify the atmosphere and do not require sulfur dioxide generation were able to control B. cinerea post-harvest and preserve the physical and chemical parameters of grape table cv. ‘Thompson seedless’. Significant differences were seen in parameters such as whitening, dehydration and incidence of stalk rot. A group of panelists could not distinguish differences in the sensory attributes and acceptability of the grapes regardless of treatment. Una efectiva forma de controlar pudriciones de post cosecha en uva de mesa es el uso de anhídrido sulfuroso (SO2); sin embargo, en determinadas condiciones, el uso de SO2 puede causar blanqueamiento de las bayas. Por ello, se plantea que el uso de bolsas con y sin nano partículas de cobre que modifiquen atmósfera, permitirá el control de Botrytis cinérea, además de prescindir del uso de anhídrido sulfuroso en su forma de generador. Se planteó como objetivo de este ensayo; evaluar el uso de bolsas con y sin nano partículas de cobre que modifiquen atmósfera, controlando Botrytis cinerea en post cosecha, y evaluar su efecto en la conservación de parámetros físicos, químicos y atributos sensoriales en uva de mesa. De los resultados se destaca que el uso de bolsas atmósfera con y sin nano partículas de cobre que modificaron atmósfera, excluyendo el uso de generadores de anhídrido sulfuroso, fueron capaces de controlar Botrytis cinerea en postcosecha de uva Thompson seedless, además de conservar los parámetros físicos y químicos. Diferencias significativas se obtuvieron en los parámetros; blanqueamiento, deshidratación y en las magulladuras e incidencia de pudriciones. Los panelistas no pudieron distinguir diferencias en los atributos sensoriales, como tampoco mayor aceptabilidad, independiente del tratamiento aplicado.

Fossilized red guano and organic controlled-release fertilizers are among the N fertilizers that can be used in organic production. There is little information about the impacts of these fertilizers on the vegetative growth, fruit yield and quality, and mineral contents in fruits. The objective of this study was to assess the responses of increasing levels of N fertilization with fossilized red guano and a controlled-release fertilizer (Fertil®) on the vegetative growth, fruit yield, quality and mineral composition of 'Granny Smith' apples grown under organic management. Treatments included the application of increasing levels of N fertilization (100, 120 and 170 kg N ha-1) applied 50% during early spring and 50% during early summer. In general, trees with higher levels of N fertilization showed greater terminal shoot length and trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) than those of the control treatment. Yield ranged from 60.0 to 62.0 kg tree-1, as well as fruit mineral concentration and ratios were not affected by the treatments. Leaf mineral concentrations were affected only in the case of N. Bitter pit incidence was low (1.4 in a scale 1-4), and therefore not statistically significant. Both fertilizers proved effective in enhancing vegetative growth compared to the control. Fertilizer applications did not affect tree cropping, fruit firmness, TSS, starch index, fruit ground color and incidence of physiological disorders. RESUMEN El guano rojo fosilizado y los fertilizantes orgánicos de entrega controlada están dentro de los fertilizantes que se pueden usar en producción orgánica. Existe poca información sobre los impactos de estos fertilizantes sobre el crecimiento, productividad, calidad y composición mineral de la fruta. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de niveles crecientes de fertilización nitrogenada con guano rojo y un fertilizante de entrega controlada (Fertil®), sobre el crecimiento vegetativo, el rendimiento, concentración mineral en hojas, la calidad y composición mineral de frutos, en manzanas 'Granny Smith' cultivadas con manejo orgánico. Los tratamientos incluyeron el uso de niveles crecientes de N (100; 120; y 170 kg N ha-1) aplicados en 2 parcialidades: 50% a inicios de primavera, y 50% a inicios del verano. En general, los árboles que recibieron dosis más altas de N presentaron un mayor crecimiento de brotes terminales y sección transversal de tronco (STT) respecto del control. El rendimiento (entre 60,0 y 62,0 kg árbol-1), la concentración mineral y las relaciones minerales en frutos tampoco se vieron afectadas por los tratamientos. Las concentraciones foliares de minerales fueron afectadas en el caso de N. Se detectó bitter pit sólo en un nivel bajo (1,4 en una escala de 1 a 4) no significativo estadísticamente. Bajo las condiciones estudiadas, ambos fertilizantes demostraron ser efectivos en aumentar el crecimiento vegetativo, respecto del control, pero no influyeron sobre el rendimiento, firmeza del frutos, contenido de solidos solubles, color de fondo y la incidencia de desórdenes fisiológicos.
