Search

The study of structures involving vortices in one component and bright solitary waves in another has a time-honored history in two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In the present work, we revisit this topic extending considerations well-past the near-integrable regime of nearly equal scattering lengths. Instead, we focus on stationary states and spectral stability of such structures for large values of the inter-component interaction coefficient. We find that the state can manifest dynamical instabilities for suitable parameter values. We also explore a phenomenological, yet quantitatively accurate upon suitable tuning, particle model which, in line also with earlier works, offers the potential of accurately following the associated stability and dynamical features. Finally, we probe the dynamics of the unstable vortex-bright structure, observing an unprecedented, to our knowledge, instability scenario in which the oscillatory instability leads to a patch of vorticity that harbors and eventually ejects multiple vortex-bright structures.

Non-Hermitian lattices with non-reciprocal couplings under open boundary conditions are known to possess linear modes exponentially localized on one edge of the chain. This phenomenon, dubbed non-Hermitian skin effect, induces all input waves in the linearized limit of the system to unidirectionally propagate toward the system's preferred boundary. Here we investigate the fate of the non-Hermitian skin effect in the presence of Kerr-type nonlinearity within the well-established Hatano-Nelson lattice model. Our method is to probe the presence of nonlinear stationary modes which are localized at the favored edge, when the Hatano-Nelson model deviates from the linear regime. Based on perturbation theory, we show that families of nonlinear skin modes emerge from the linear ones at any non-reciprocal strength. Our findings reveal that, in the case of focusing nonlinearity, these families of nonlinear skin modes tend to exhibit enhanced localization, bridging the gap between weakly nonlinear modes and the highly nonlinear states (discrete solitons) when approaching the anti-continuum limit with vanishing couplings. Conversely, for defocusing nonlinearity, these nonlinear skin modes tend to become more extended than their linear counterpart. To assess the stability of these solutions, we conduct a linear stability analysis across the entire spectrum of obtained nonlinear modes and also explore representative examples of their evolution dynamics., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We explore the dynamics and interactions of multiple bright droplets and bubbles, as well as the interactions of kinks with droplets and with antikinks, in the extended one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii model including the Lee-Huang-Yang correction. Existence regions are identified for the one-dimensional droplets and bubbles in terms of their chemical potential, verifying the stability of the droplets and exposing the instability of the bubbles. The limiting case of the droplet family is a stable kink. The interactions between droplets demonstrate in-phase (out-of-phase) attraction (repulsion), with the so-called Manton's method explicating the observed dynamical response, and mixed behavior for intermediate values of the phase shift. Droplets bearing different chemical potentials experience mass-exchange phenomena. Individual bubbles exhibit core expansion and mutual attraction prior to their destabilization. Droplets interacting with kinks are absorbed by them, a process accompanied by the emission of dispersive shock waves and gray solitons. Kink-antikink interactions are repulsive, generating counter-propagating shock waves. Motivated by the work of J.K.~Jang et al., Nat.~Commun.~{\bf 6}, 7370 (2015), where the authors experimentally tweeze cavity solitons in a passive loop of optical fiber, we study the amenability to tweezing of cavity solitons as the properties of a localized tweezer are varied. The system is modeled by the Lugiato-Lefever equation, a variant of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We produce an effective, localized, trapping tweezer potential by assuming a Gaussian phase-modulation of the holding beam. The potential for tweezing is then assessed as the total (temporal) displacement and speed of the tweezer are varied, and corresponding phase diagrams are presented. As the relative speed of the tweezer is increased we find two possible dynamical scenarios: successful tweezing and release of the cavity soliton. We also deploy a non-conservative variational approximation (NCVA) based on a Lagrangian description which reduces the original dissipative partial differential equation to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations for the cavity soliton parameters. We illustrate the ability of the NCVA to accurately predict the separatrix between successful and failed tweezing. This showcases the versatility of the NCVA to provide a low-dimensional description of the experimental realization of the temporal tweezing., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures

We unravel the existence and stability properties of dark soliton solutions as they extend from the regime of trapped quantum droplets towards the Thomas-Fermi limit in homonuclear symmetric Bose mixtures. Leveraging a phase-plane analysis, we identify the regimes of existence of different types of quantum droplets and subsequently examine the possibility of black and gray solitons and kink-type structures in this system. Moreover, we employ the Landau dynamics approach to extract an analytical estimate of the oscillation frequency of a single dark soliton in the relevant extended Gross-Pitaevskii model. Within this framework, we also find that the single soliton immersed in a droplet is stable, while multisoliton configurations exhibit parametric windows of oscillatory instabilities. In the present work we consider models of quantum droplets in the presence of a defect in the form of a laser beam moving through the respective condensates including the Lee-Huang-Yang correction. Our analysis features separately an exploration of the existence, stability, bifurcations and dynamics in 1D, 2D and 3D settings. In the absence of an analytical solution of the problem, we provide an analysis of the speed of sound and observe how the states traveling with the defect may feature a saddle-center bifurcation as the speed or the strength of the defect is modified. Relevant bifurcation diagrams are constructed systematically, and the unstable states, as well as the dynamics past the existence of stable states is monitored. The connection of the resulting states with dark solitonic patterns in 1D, vortical states in 2D and vortex rings in 3D is accordingly elucidated., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

We study the existence, stability, and dynamics of vortex dipole and quadrupole configurations in the nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation on the surface of a torus. For this purpose we use, in addition to the full two-dimensional NLS on the torus, a recently derived [Phys. Rev. A 101, 053606 (2021)] reduced point-vortex particle model which is shown to be in excellent agreement with the full NLS evolution. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal stationary vortex dipoles are identified and continued along the torus aspect ratio and the chemical potential of the solution. Windows of stability for these solutions are identified. We also investigate stationary vortex quadrupole configurations. After eliminating similar solutions induced by invariances and symmetries, we find a total of 16 distinct configurations ranging from horizontal and vertical aligned quadrupoles, to rectangular and rhomboidal quadrupoles, to trapezoidal and irregular quadrupoles. The stability for the least unstable and, potentially, stable quadrapole solutions is monitored both at the NLS and the reduced model levels. Two quadrupole configurations are found to be stable on small windows of the torus aspect ratio and a handful of quadrupoles are found to be very weakly unstable for relatively large parameter windows. In this work we study the existence, stability, and dynamics of select topological point and line defects in anti-ferromagnetic, polar phase, $F=1$ $^{23}$Na spinor condensates. Specifically, we leverage fixed-point and numerical continuation techniques in three spatial dimensions to identify solution families of monopole and Alice rings as the chemical potential (number of atoms) and trapping strengths are varied within intervals of realizable experimental parameters. We are able to follow the monopole from the linear limit of small atom number all the way to the Thomas-Fermi regime of large atom number. Additionally, and importantly, our studies reveal the existence of {\em two} Alice ring solution branches, corresponding to, relatively, smaller and larger ring radii, that bifurcate from each other in a saddle-center bifurcation as the chemical potential is varied. We find that the monopole solution is always dynamically unstable in the regimes considered. In contrast, we find that the larger Alice ring is indeed stable close to the bifurcation point until it destabilizes from an oscillatory instability bubble for a larger value of the chemical potential. We also report on the possibility of dramatically reducing, yet not completely eliminating, the instability rates for the smaller Alice ring by varying the trapping strengths. The main focus of the present work is to study quasi-one-dimensional kink-antikink stripes embedded in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. Using variational techniques, we reduce the interaction dynamics between a kink and an antikink stripe on their respective time and space dependent widths and locations. The resulting reduced system of coupled equations is found to accurately describe the width and undulation dynamics of a single kink stripe as well as that of interacting ones. As an aside, we also discuss two related topics: the computational identification of the kink center and its numerical implications and alternative perturbative and multiple scales approaches to the transverse direction induced dynamics for a single kink stripe in the two-dimensional realm., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

In the present work, we explore analytically and numerically the co-existence and interactions of ring dark solitons (RDSs) with other RDSs, as well as with vortices. The azimuthal instabilities of the rings are explored via the so-called filament method. As a result of their nonlinear interaction, the vortices are found to play a stabilizing role on the rings, yet their effect is not sufficient to offer complete stabilization of RDSs. Nevertheless, complete stabilization of the relevant configuration can be achieved by the presence of external ring-shaped barrier potentials. Interactions of multiple rings are also explored, and their equilibrium positions (as a result of their own curvature and their tail-tail interactions) are identified. We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations., Comment: To be published in Commun. We study the dynamics and pairwise interactions of dark soliton stripes in the two-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. By employing a variational approach we reduce the dynamics for dark soliton stripes to a set of coupled one-dimensional "filament" equations of motion for the position and velocity of the stripe. The method yields good qualitative agreement with the numerical results as regards the transverse instability of the stripes. We propose a phenomenological amendment that also significantly improves the quantitative agreement of the method with the computations. Subsequently, the method is extended for a pair of symmetric dark soliton stripes that include the mutual interactions between the filaments. The reduced equations of motion are compared with a recently proposed adiabatic invariant method and its corresponding findings and are found to provide a more adequate representation of the original full dynamics for a wide range of cases encompassing perturbations with long and short wavelengths, and combinations thereof., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

In the present work we examine the statics and dynamics of multiple parallel dark soliton stripes in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Our principal goal is to study the effect of the interaction between the stripes on the transverse instability of the individual stripes. We use a recently developed adiabatic invariant formulation to derive a quasi-analytical prediction for the stripe equilibrium position and for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum of excitations of stationary stripes. The cases of two-, three- and four-stripe states are studied in detail. We subsequently test our predictions against numerical simulations of the full two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the number of unstable eigenmodes increases as the number of stripes increases due to (unstable) relative motions between the stripes. Their corresponding growth rates do not significantly change, although for large chemical potentials, the larger the stripe number, the larger the maximal instability growth rate. We systematically construct stationary soliton states in a one-component, two-dimensional, repulsive, Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a ring-shaped target-like trap similar to the potential used to confine a Bose-Einstein condensate in a recent experiment [Eckel, et al.\ {\em Nature} {\bf 506}, 200 (2014)]. In addition to the ground state configuration, we identify a wide variety of excited states involving phase jumps (and associated dark solitons) inside the ring. These configurations are obtained from a systematic bifurcation analysis starting from the linear, small atom density, limit. We study the stability, and when unstable, the dynamics of the most basic configurations. Often these lead to vortical dynamics inside the ring persisting over long time scales in our numerical experiments. To illustrate the relevance of the identified states, we showcase how such dark-soliton configurations (even the unstable ones) can be created in laboratory condensates by using phase-imprinting techniques., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures

We consider the dynamics and stability of bright soliton stripes in the two-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with hyperbolic dispersion, under the action of transverse perturbations. We start by discussing a recently proposed adiabatic-invariant approximation for transverse instabilities and its limitations in the bright soliton case. We then focus on a variational approximation used to reduce the dynamics of the bright-soliton stripe to effective equations of motion for its transverse shift. The reduction allows us to address the stripe's snaking instability, which is inherently present in the system, and follow the ensuing spatiotemporal undulation dynamics. Further, introducing a channel-shaped potential, we show that the instabilities (not only flexural, but also those of the necking type) can be attenuated, up to the point of complete stabilization of the soliton stripe., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figues, to be published in Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation

We consider effectively one-dimensional planar and radial kinks in two-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon models and focus on the sine-Gordon model and the $\phi^4$ variants thereof. We adapt an adiabatic invariant formulation recently developed for nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equations, and we study the transverse stability of these kinks. This enables us to characterize one-dimensional planar kinks as solitonic filaments, whose stationary states and corresponding spectral stability can be characterized not only in the homogeneous case, but also in the presence of external potentials. Beyond that, the full nonlinear (transverse) dynamics of such filaments are described using the reduced, one-dimensional, adiabatic invariant formulation. For radial kinks, this approach confirms their azimuthal stability. It also predicts the possibility of creating stationary and stable ring-like kinks. We study a two-dimensional incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensate described by an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the polariton dynamics coupled to a rate equation for the exciton density. Adopting a hydrodynamic approach, we use multiscale expansion methods to derive several models appearing in the context of shallow water waves with viscosity. In particular, we derive a Boussinesq/Benney-Luke type equation and its far-field expansion in terms of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I (KP-I) equations for right- and left-going waves. From the KP-I model, we predict the existence of vorticity-free, weakly (algebraically) localized two-dimensional dark-lump solitons. We find that, in the presence of dissipation, dark lumps exhibit a lifetime three times larger than that of planar dark solitons. Direct numerical simulations show that dark lumps do exist, and their dissipative dynamics is well captured by our analytical approximation. It is also shown that lump-like and vortex-like structures can spontaneously be formed as a result of the transverse "snaking" instability of dark soliton stripes., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

In the present work, we develop an adiabatic invariant approach for the evolution of quasi-one-dimensional (stripe) solitons embedded in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. The results of the theory are obtained both for the one-component case of dark soliton stripes, as well as for the considerably more involved case of the two-component dark-bright (alias "filled dark") soliton stripes. In both cases, analytical predictions regarding the stability and dynamics of these structures are obtained. One of our main findings is the determination of the instability modes of the waves as a function of the parameters of the system (such as the trap strength and the chemical potential). We study the dynamics of dark solitons in an incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensate by means of a system composed by a generalized open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the polaritons' wavefunction and a rate equation for the exciton reservoir density. Considering a perturbative regime of sufficiently small reservoir excitations, we use the reductive perturbation method, to reduce the system to a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with linear loss. This model is used to describe the analytical form and the dynamics of dark solitons. We show that the polariton field supports decaying dark soliton solutions with a decay rate determined analytically in the weak pumping regime. We also find that the dark soliton evolution is accompanied by a shelf, whose dynamics follows qualitatively the effective KdV picture., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, (accepted for publication in Physics Letters A)

We consider the motion of individual two-dimensional vortices in general radially symmetric potentials in Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that although in the special case of the parabolic trap there is a logarithmic correction in the dependence of the precession frequency $\omega$ on the chemical potential $\mu$, this is no longer true for a general potential $V(r) \propto r^p$. Our calculations suggest that for $p>2$, the precession frequency scales with $\mu$ as $\omega \sim \mu^{-2/p}$. This theoretical prediction is corroborated by numerical computations, both at the level of spectral (Bogolyubov-de Gennes) stability analysis by identifying the relevant precession mode dependence on $\mu$, but also through direct numerical computations of the vortex evolution in the large $\mu$, so-called Thomas-Fermi, limit. Additionally, the dependence of the precession frequency on the radius of an initially displaced from the center vortex is examined and the corresponding predictions are tested against numerical results., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Quantum vortices, the quantized version of classical vortices, play a prominent role in superfluid and superconductor phase transitions. However, their exploration at a particle level in open quantum systems has gained considerable attention only recently. Here we study vortex pair interactions in a resonant polariton fluid created in a solid-state microcavity. By tracking the vortices on picosecond time scales, we reveal the role of nonlinearity, as well as of density and phase gradients, in driving their rotational dynamics. Such effects are also responsible for the split of composite spin-vortex molecules into elementary half-vortices, when seeding opposite vorticity between the two spinorial components. Remarkably, we also observe that vortices placed in close proximity experience a pull-push scenario leading to unusual scattering-like events that can be described by a tunable effective potential. We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large-density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modulation can cause a variety of features absent for homogeneous nonlinearities. Among them, we note the potential oscillatory instability even of the single dark soliton, the potential absence of instabilities in the immediate vicinity of the linear limit for two dark solitons, and the existence of an exponential instability associated with the in-phase motion of three dark solitons., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

In the present work, we explore the existence, stability and dynamics of single and multiple vortex ring states that can arise in Bose-Einstein condensates. Earlier works have illustrated the bifurcation of such states, in the vicinity of the linear limit, for isotropic or anisotropic three-dimensional harmonic traps. Here, we extend these states to the regime of large chemical potentials, the so-called Thomas-Fermi limit, and explore their properties such as equilibrium radii and inter-ring distance, for multi-ring states, as well as their vibrational spectra and possible instabilities. In this limit, both the existence and stability characteristics can be partially traced to a particle picture that considers the rings as individual particles oscillating within the trap and interacting pairwise with one another. Finally, we examine some representative instability scenarios of the multi-ring dynamics including breakup and reconnections, as well as the transient formation of vortex lines., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Assume a lower-dimensional solitonic structure embedded in a higher dimensional space, e.g., a 1D dark soliton embedded in 2D space, a ring dark soliton in 2D space, a spherical shell soliton in 3D space etc. By extending the Landau dynamics approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 240403 (2004)], we show that it is possible to capture the transverse dynamical modes (the "Kelvin modes") of the undulation of this "soliton filament" within the higher dimensional space. These are the transverse stability/instability modes and are the ones potentially responsible for the breakup of the soliton into structures such as vortices, vortex rings etc. We present the theory and case examples in 2D and 3D, corroborating the results by numerical stability and dynamical computations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
