Although previous observational studies have shown associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration and metabolic syndrome, this association has not yet been investigated among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We aimed to investigate the association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and metabolic syndrome and its risk factors in this population group. We used cross-sectional data from the 2012-2013 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey. Metabolic syndrome is defined as having 3 or more risk factors: elevated waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, or elevated fasting blood glucose. We used binomial logistic regression to test associations between serum 25(OH)D concentration and metabolic syndrome, and multiple linear regression to test associations between serum 25(OH)D concentration and each risk factor. We included the following covariates: age, sex, smoking status, education level, socio-economic status, remoteness of location, season, and body mass index (BMI). After adjusting for covariates, we found that each 10 nmol/L increase in serum 25(OH)D concentration was statistically significantly associated with a 16% lower risk of metabolic syndrome (odds ratio: 0.84, 95% confidence interval: 0.76, 0.92) and a 2.1 cm (95% confidence interval: 1.65, 2.57) lower waist circumference (BMI was not included in the model for waist circumference). We found small inverse associations between serum 25(OH)D concentration and all other risk factors except systolic blood pressure. Given that higher serum 25(OH)D concentration may confer metabolic health benefits, promoting vitamin D sufficiency may be beneficial for this population.

Experimental determination of the structure of the superconducting order parameter in the kagome lattice compound CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is an essential step towards understanding the nature of the superconducting pairing in this material. Here we report measurements of the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda(T)$, in crystals of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ down to $\sim 60\,\mathrm{mK}$. We find that $\lambda(T)$ is consistent with a fully-gapped state but with significant gap anisotropy. The magnitude of the gap minima are in the range $\sim 0.2 - 0.3 T_\mathrm{c}$ for the measured samples, markedly smaller than previous estimates. We discuss different forms of potential anisotropy and how these can be linked to the V and Sb Fermi surface sheets. We highlight a significant discrepancy between the calculated and measured values of $\lambda(T=0)$ which we suggest is caused by spatially suppressed superconductivity.

Despite researchers having extensively studied various ways to track body pose on-the-go, most prior work does not take into account wheelchair users, leading to poor tracking performance. Wheelchair users could greatly benefit from this pose information to prevent injuries, monitor their health, identify environmental accessibility barriers, and interact with gaming and VR experiences. In this work, we present WheelPoser, a real-time pose estimation system specifically designed for wheelchair users. Our system uses only four strategically placed IMUs on the user's body and wheelchair, making it far more practical than prior systems using cameras and dense IMU arrays. WheelPoser is able to track a wheelchair user's pose with a mean joint angle error of 14.30 degrees and a mean joint position error of 6.74 cm, more than three times better than similar systems using sparse IMUs. To train our system, we collect a novel WheelPoser-IMU dataset, consisting of 167 minutes of paired IMU sensor and motion capture data of people in wheelchairs, including wheelchair-specific motions such as propulsion and pressure relief. Finally, we explore the potential application space enabled by our system and discuss future opportunities. Background: Low vitamin D intake and high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration < 50 nmol/L) among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples highlight a need for public health strategies to improve vitamin D status. As few foods contain naturally occurring vitamin D, fortification strategies may be needed to improve vitamin D intake and status among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Objective: We aimed to model vitamin D food fortification scenarios among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Methods: We used nationally representative food consumption data (n=4,109) and vitamin D food composition data to model four food fortification scenarios. The modelling for Scenario 1 included foods and maximum vitamin D concentrations permitted for fortification in Australia: i) dairy products and alternatives, ii) butter/margarine/oil spreads, iii) formulated beverages, and iv) selected ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. The modelling for Scenarios 2a-c included some vitamin D concentrations higher than permitted in Australia; Scenario 2c included bread, which is not permitted for vitamin D fortification in Australia. Scenario 2a: i) dairy products and alternatives, ii) butter/margarine/oil spreads, iii) formulated beverages. Scenario 2b: as per Scenario 2a plus selected ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. Scenario 2c: as per Scenario 2b plus bread. Results: Vitamin D fortification of a range of staple foods could potentially increase vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by ~ 3-6 {\mu}g/day. Scenario 2c showed the highest potential median vitamin D intake increase to ~ 8 {\mu}g/day. Across all modelled scenarios, none of the participants had vitamin D intake above the Australian upper level of intake of 80 {\mu}g/day.

Cooking is an essential activity that enhances quality of life by enabling individuals to prepare their own meals. However, cooking often requires multitasking between cooking tasks and following instructions, which can be challenging to cooks with vision impairments if recipes or other instructions are inaccessible. To explore the practices and challenges of recipe access while cooking, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 people with vision impairments who have cooking experience and four cooking instructors at a vision rehabilitation center. We also asked participants to edit and give feedback on existing recipes. We revealed unique practices and challenges to accessing recipe information at different cooking stages, such as the heavy burden of hand-washing to interact with recipe readers. We also presented the preferred information representation and structure of recipes. We then highlighted design features of technological supports that could facilitate the development of more accessible kitchen technologies for recipe access. Background/Objective: Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration <50 nmol/L) is prevalent among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Alternative to sun exposure (the primary source of vitamin D), vitamin D can also be obtained from food (e.g., fish, eggs, and meat) and supplements. However, vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is currently unknown. We aimed to provide the first quantification of vitamin D intake using nationally representative data from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Methods: We used food consumption data collected in the 2012-2013 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (n = 4,109) and vitamin D food composition data to quantify mean absolute vitamin D intake by sex, age group, and remoteness of location. Differences in mean vitamin D intake between sexes and between remoteness of location were assessed using the 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: The mean (standard deviation (SD)) vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples was 2.9 (3.0) {\mu}g/day. Males had a statistically significantly higher mean (SD) [95% CI] vitamin D intake (3.2 (3.1) [3.0-3.4] {\mu}g/day) than females (2.6 (2.7) [2.4-2.7] {\mu}g/day). There were no statistically significant differences between mean (SD) [95% CI] vitamin D intake in non-remote (2.9 (2.2) [2.7-3.1] {\mu}g/day) and remote areas (2.8 (4.8) [2.6-3.0] {\mu}g/day). Conclusions: Vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is low. Food-based public health strategies could be developed to promote higher vitamin D intake among this population.

We calculate the leading and next-to-leading corrections to the real-time QCD static potential in a high temperature medium in the region where bound states transit from narrow resonances to wide ones. We find sizable contributions to both the real and the imaginary part of the potential. The calculation involves both loop diagrams calculated in the Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) effective theory and power corrections to the HTL Lagrangian calculated in QCD. At the earliest stage of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions the produced matter is a highly populated system of gluons called glasma which can be approximately described in terms of classical chromodynamic fields. Quantifying uncertainty in detected changepoints is an important problem. However it is challenging as the naive approach would use the data twice, first to detect the changes, and then to test them. This will bias the test, and can lead to anti-conservative p-values. One approach to avoid this is to use ideas from post-selection inference, which conditions on the information in the data used to choose which changes to test. As a result this produces valid p-values; that is, p-values that have a uniform distribution if there is no change. Currently such methods have been developed for detecting changes in mean only. This paper presents two approaches for constructing post-selection p-values for detecting changes in variance. We study the real part of the static potential of a heavy quark-antiquark system in an anisotropic plasma medium. We use a quasi-particle approach where the collective dynamics of the plasma constituents is described using hard-loop perturbation theory. The parton distribution function is characterized by a set of parameters that can accurately describe the anisotropy of the plasma produced in a heavy ion collision. We calculate the potential numerically in strongly anisotropic systems and study the angular dependence of the distortion of the potential relative to the isotropic one. We obtain an analytic expression for the real part of the heavy quark potential in the limit of weak anisotropy using a model that expresses the potential in terms of effective screening masses that depend on the anisotropy parameters and the orientation of the quark-antiquark pair. A 1-dimensional potential is formulated in terms of angle averaged screening masses that incorporate the anisotropy of the medium into a radial coordinate. We solve the corresponding Schr\"odinger equation and show that the magnitude of the binding energy typically increases with anisotropy. Anisotropy can play an important role, especially in states with non-zero angular momentum. This means that the number of bound states that are formed could depend on specific characteristics of the anisotropy of the plasma. We study numerically the evolution of an expanding strongly self-coupled real scalar field. We use a conformally invariant action that gives a traceless energy-momentum tensor and is better suited to model the early time behaviour of a system such as QCD, whose action is also conformally invariant.We consider asymmetric initial conditions and observe that when the system is initialized with non-zero spatial eccentricity, the eccentricity decreases and the elliptic flow coefficient increases. We look at a measure of transverse pressure asymmetry that has been shown to behave similarly to the elliptic flow coefficient in hydrodynamic systems and show that in our system their behaviour is strikingly similar. We show that the derivative of the transverse velocity is proportional to the gradient of the energy in Milne coordinates and argue that this result means that transverse velocity initially develops in the same way that it does in hydrodynamic systems. We conclude that some aspects of the early onset of hydrodynamic behaviour that has been observed in quark-gluon plasmas are seen in our numerical simulation of strongly coupled scalar fields., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

Mapping deprivation in urban areas is important, for example for identifying areas of greatest need and planning interventions. Traditional ways of obtaining deprivation estimates are based on either census or household survey data, which in many areas is unavailable or difficult to collect. However, there has been a huge rise in the amount of new, non-traditional forms of data, such as satellite imagery and cell-phone call-record data, which may contain information useful for identifying deprivation. We use Angle-Based Joint and Individual Variation Explained (AJIVE) to jointly model satellite imagery data, cell-phone data, and survey data for the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We first identify interpretable low-dimensional structure from the imagery and cell-phone data, and find that we can use these to identify deprivation. We then consider what is gained from further incorporating the more traditional and costly survey data. We also introduce a scalar measure of deprivation as a response variable to be predicted, and consider various approaches to multiview regression, including using AJIVE scores as predictors., Comment: 34 pages, 25 figures

Autistic adults often experience stigma and discrimination at work, leading them to seek social communication support from coworkers, friends, and family despite emotional risks. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly considered an alternative. In this work, we investigate the phenomenon of LLM use by autistic adults at work and explore opportunities and risks of LLMs as a source of social communication advice. We asked 11 autistic participants to present questions about their own workplace-related social difficulties to (1) a GPT-4-based chatbot and (2) a disguised human confederate. Our evaluation shows that participants strongly preferred LLM over confederate interactions. However, a coach specializing in supporting autistic job-seekers raised concerns that the LLM was dispensing questionable advice. We highlight how this divergence in participant and practitioner attitudes reflects existing schisms in HCI on the relative privileging of end-user wants versus normative good and propose design considerations for LLMs to center autistic experiences., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure, CHI '24 Conference

Individuals with vision impairments employ a variety of strategies for object identification, such as pans or soy sauce, in the culinary process. In addition, they often rely on contextual details about objects, such as location, orientation, and current status, to autonomously execute cooking activities. To understand how people with vision impairments collect and use the contextual information of objects while cooking, we conducted a contextual inquiry study with 12 participants in their own kitchens. This research aims to analyze object interaction dynamics in culinary practices to enhance assistive vision technologies for visually impaired cooks. We outline eight different types of contextual information and the strategies that blind cooks currently use to access the information while preparing meals. Further, we discuss preferences for communicating contextual information about kitchen objects as well as considerations for the deployment of AI-powered assistive technologies., Comment: CHI 2024

According to the Color Glass Condensate approach to relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the earliest phase of the collision is a glasma which is made of highly populated gluon fields that can be treated classically. Using a proper time expansion we study analytically various properties of the glasma. In particular, we compute the glasma energy-momentum tensor which allows us to obtain the energy density, longitudinal and transverse pressure, collective flow, and angular momentum.
