In the past, a member of the public could access an academic library's collection simply by visiting the library in person and browsing the shelves. However, now that online resources are prevalent and represent the majority of collections budgets and current collections, public access has become more complicated. In Canadian academic libraries, licences negotiated for online resources generally allow on-site access for walk-in users; however, access is not granted uniformly across libraries. The goal of this study was to understand whether members of the public are indeed able to access online resources in major Canadian university libraries, whether access to supporting tools is offered, how access is provided, and whether access is monitored or promoted. The study used an online survey that targeted librarians responsible for user services at Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) member libraries. The survey results indicated that some level of free access to digital resources was provided to walk-in users at 90% of libraries for which a survey response was received. However, limitations in methods and modes of access and availability of supporting resources, such as software and printing, varied between the institutions. As important aspects of librarianship converge with information technology (IT), the role of librarians is worth considering. Librarians may not be fully engaging with the possibilities of IT because they are only using, rather than creating, information technology. Examining the implications of gender underrepresentation and gendered identities in both fields is a starting point for investigating librarians' relationship with IT. In particular, stereotypes for the female gender and the librarian profession may be an impediment in librarians' involvement in IT. Librarians may self-stereotype themselves out of engaging with IT by identifying strongly with female and librarian stereotypes, which can be considered to be incompatible with IT stereotypes. However, upon closer examination, stereotypes can be shown to be false and those who previously self-stereotyped can adopt more balanced identities, aiding performance. Finding positive role models who do not fit stereotypes may be helpful. Expecting a comprehensive IT education in library school is misguided, but problem-based learning -- commonly seen in IT -- is one method librarians could adopt. Libraries should prioritize and make allowances for IT skill development and librarians can take advantage of the increasing opportunities for learning about IT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article the authors introduce the Librarians' Research Partnership (LRP), founded in 2013, at McGill and Concordia University Libraries. The Partnership was inspired by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries' Librarians' Research Institute (CARL LRI) which was attended by three of the authors in 2012 and is described here from the point of view of the participants. The authors touch upon the research culture at McGill and Concordia Libraries and discuss barriers and supports for research as prominent themes in the literature on the research role of Canadian academic librarians. The formation of the LRP and the eight subsequent meetings are explained in detail, as well as the factors that made the LRP a successful initiative between the two universities: physical proximity, similarity of working environments, and common organizational culture. This study was undertaken to better understand the range of learning practices that academic librarians use throughout their careers, and to explore the ways library schools give students the opportunities to engage in learning methods that they are likely to use in their careers as librarians. The study uses semistructured interviews with academic librarians to explore their experiences of learning in library school, as new librarians, and later as they advanced through their careers. The study found that learning is an ongoing and essential aspect of librarianship, and that it is generally self-directed, informal, highly dependent on social interactions with peers, and embedded in practice. Participants in the study reported that most of what they needed to know was learned once they started working as librarians, and that their library school experience did little to prepare them for these ways of learning. The study also found that the conceptual model of communities of practice provides a useful perspective for understanding the learning of librarians and for designing a library school experience that is more effective at preparing students for their future careers as librarians.
