Abstract

Veinte profesores de siete universidades suizas proponen su propia lectura del principio horaciano de enseñar deleitando a través de un mosaico de textos que difieren en la lengua, en el género y hasta en el alfabeto. Los artículos versan sobre las curiosas y amenas enseñanzas de los eximios maestros y de sus cofrades más humildes, las ideas que emanan de autores consagrados y las de otros que se apartan en cierta medida del canon, las versiones e interpretaciones diversas de textos clásicos conocidos, y el juego intelectual al que se prestan textos modernos menos conocidos. Vingt professeurs de sept universités suisses proposent chacun une lecture du principe horatien plaire et instruire à travers une mosaïque de textes qui diffèrent par la langue, le genre et même l’alphabet. On trouvera dans cet ouvrage des articles sur les enseignements curieux et plaisants de penseurs illustres ou non, sur les idées d’auteurs consacrés et celles d’auteurs qui s’éloignent, dans une certaine mesure, de l’orthodoxie, sur les versions et interprétations diverses de textes classiques ainsi que sur le jeu intellectuel auquel peuvent se prêter des textes modernes moins connus.

Abstract

This paper presents an On-Off-Keying (OOK) modulator for a flexible and wearable wireless transmitter implemented in an amorphous-Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide (a-IGZO) TFT technology. The circuit consists of a three-stage ring oscillator for the carrier and an output driver with an OOK modulation switch, realized with just five transistors. In order to maximize the operation frequency, we use 2 μm-long nMOS transistors in the circuit design. The proposed OOK modulator is fabricated on a polyimide flexible substrate, and characterized with 3-to-5 V supply voltages and an output load capacitance of 15 pF. The circuit operates from the lowest supply voltage of 3 V, while the highest measured oscillation frequency is 3.76 MHz at 5 V V DD . Although the schematic is simple and straight forward, the equivalent modulation depth ranges from 61.3 % to 78.2 %, which can be detected with an existing AM/OOK receiver in the same technology. The power consumptions for 3 V and 5 V supply voltages are 2.15 mW and 6.77 mW, respectively.

27. Stroking and tapping the skin: behavioral and electrodermal effects

Abstract

Being caressed represents one of the most typical expressions of affection conveyed by touch. Converging evidence suggests that the pleasant perception of gentle and slow stroking delivered to the hairy skin is mediated by C-Tactile afferents (CTs). While behavioral and neural responses to CT-optimal touch have been moderately explored so far, less is known about the autonomic reaction to different kinds of touch (both CT-optimal and not). Here, we investigated whether physiological arousal varies as a function of the specific tactile stimulation provided. Stroking (slow: 3 cm/s ‘CT-optimal’; or fast: 30 cm/s) and tapping (random or fixed spatial order) stimulations were delivered to the participants’ forearm with a brush, for durations of 9 or 60 s. Participants’ skin conductance response (SCR) and level (SCL), as well as subjective evaluations, were recorded. The results revealed that being stroked (at both the velocities) induced higher SCR and SCL than being tapped. Moreover, while higher SCR was elicited by CT-suboptimal stroking compared to CT-optimal stroking, SCL was not affected differently by CT-optimal touch. No differences were found between the effects of 9 and 60 s stimulations. Slow stroking was evaluated as the most pleasant, relaxing and ‘social’ type of touch compared to the other tactile stimulations. Taken together, these findings shed light on the psychophysiological responses to stroking (including CT-optimal touch) and tapping, and contribute to elucidate the mechanisms underlying hedonic tactile perception

Abstract

Objective: Narcolepsy is a lifelong disease, manifesting with excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, arising between childhood and young adulthood. The diagnosis is typically made after a long delay that burdens the disease severity. The aim of the project, promoted by the "Associazione Italiana Narcolettici e Ipersonni" is to develop Red Flags to detect symptoms for early referral, targeting non-sleep medicine specialists, general practitioners, and pediatricians.Materials and Methods: A multidisciplinary panel, including patients, public institutions, and representatives of national scientific societies of specialties possibly involved in the diagnostic process of suspected narcolepsy, was convened. The project was accomplished in three phases. Phase 1: Sleep experts shaped clinical pictures of narcolepsy in pediatric and adult patients. On the basis of these pictures, Red Flags were drafted. Phase 2: Representatives of the scientific societies and patients filled in a form to identify barriers to the diagnosis of narcolepsy. Phase 3: The panel produced suggestions for the implementation of Red Flags.Results: Red Flags were produced representing three clinical pictures of narcolepsy in pediatric patients ((1) usual sleep symptoms, (2) unusual sleep symptoms, (3) endocrinological signs) and two in adult patients ((1) usual sleep symptoms, (2) unusual sleep symptoms). Inadequate knowledge of symptoms at onset by medical doctors turned out to be the main reported barrier to diagnosis.Conclusions: This report will hopefully enhance knowledge and awareness of narcolepsy among non-specialists in sleep medicine in order to reduce the diagnostic delay that burdens patients in Italy. Abstract

In June 2002, the member states of the European Union (EU) adopted the Council Framework Decision on Combating Terrorism, with which they agreed on various measures to enhance their cooperation on counter-terrorism. The framework decision defines terrorism as a security threat, specifies which individual and collective acts count as ‘terrorist offences’, and puts forward policy recommendations as to how such offences can be effectively addressed. It calls on the member states to adopt a common definition of terrorism and improve their legislative practices and policing capabilities in order to better implement the objectives of the EU counter-terrorism action (Council 2002).
