The amount of biological data available in online repositories is increasing at an exponential rate. However, data on marine invertebrate biodiversity resources from Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe are still sparse and scattered. Online repositories are useful instruments for biodiversity research, as they provide a fast access to data from different sources. The use of interactive platforms comprising web mapping are becoming more important, not only for the scientific community, but also for conservation managers, decision-makers and the general public as they allow data presentation in simple and understandable visual schemes. The main goal of this study was to create an interactive online digital map (hosted and available at MARINBIODIV Atlas), through the collection of data from various sources, to visualise marine invertebrate occurrences and distribution across different habitats, namely mangroves, seagrasses, corals and other coastal areas, in Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe. The acquired biodiversity data were managed and structured to be displayed as spatial data and to be disseminated using the geographic information system ArcGIS, where data can be accessed, filtered and mapped. The ArcGIS web mapping design tools were used to produce interactive maps to visualise marine invertebrate diversity information along the coasts of Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, through different habitats, offering the foundation for analysing species incidence and allocation information. Understanding the spatial occurrences and distribution of marine invertebrates in both countries can provide a valuable baseline, regarding information and trends on their coastal marine biodiversity.

This Milestone 3.2 report for DiSSCo Prepare Work Package 3 Task 3.1 sets out the initial design blueprint for a DiSSCo Digital Maturity Self-Assessment Tool, building on the analyses in the Milestone 3.1 report ‘Improving Digital Capability - Case Studies and Analysis’ (Hardy et al, Dec 2020) and in the Milestone 3.3. Report, including consideration of two existing tools in our sector. This tool is intended to support teams, institutions and national nodes in developing organisational readiness for provision of the DiSSCo services and data, helping them to identify and target areas for improvement. The aim is for this to tie in to future provision of training and support, as well as helping to identify the gaps at aggregate level where that training may be most useful. In addition , we believe there is a case for a platform that can support both this and the related Task 7.3 Policy Tool, such that these or other tools are consistent for users and can interact with one another where relevant, avoiding any duplication. This blueprint is intended for wider discussion among the DiSSCo members, so that tool content can be developed in more detail as part of the Deliverable for this Task info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This Deliverable report summarises the key insights and recommendations from DiSSCo Prepare Task 3.1, which looked at digital skills, competencies and capabilities across individuals and organisations, as part of the wider Work Package on capacity enhancement. This task looked at insights from previous DiSSCo linked projects; a wide range of competency framework examples; sources of data about individual and organisational capabilities; and capacity building for organisations leading to the key recommendation of a DiSSCo Digital Maturity Tool. These insights are already being used as inputs to other Tasks in DiSSCo Prepare, showing the key role of capability in the broadest sense in underpinning the DiSSCo digital transformation. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

MARINE organisms ,NATURAL history ,HABITATS - Abstract
Natural history collections (NHC) worldwide contain vast amount of valuable data that can be used to answer a wide range of questions by exploring biodiversity and natural resources records, having an immense potential to contribute to science, policy making and legislating, and to public scientific awareness. Likewise, the development and increase of global and regional biodiversity digital databases (e.g., Global Biodiversity Information Facility - GBIF; Fauna Europaea; Naturdata, etc.), scientific literature and all digital information regarding biodiversity, ecological areas and climate records comprise a huge amount of primary and processed digital ecological data (DED) accessible globally that can be readily used, at no cost, and integrated to further study e.g. biodiversity changes, ecological processes, natural habitat distribution, prioritizing ecosystem management and conservation actions, etc. Marine invertebrate biodiversity contributes to the structure and stability of ecosystem processes such as productivity, ecological networks, as well as nutrient and biogeochemical cycling having also an economic importance as a food source for local populations. Mangroves and seagrasses encompass ecological and socio-economic relevance as they have a preponderant role in marine and coastal ecosystem biodiversity and functioning providing a vast number of goods and services to local populations. Although generally pristine, mangroves and seagrasses in Africa are extremely vulnerable to the increased migration of rural populations to urban coastal areas and to extreme climate events. As a result, human activities such as construction, agriculture and food harvesting, provoke habitat degradation and biodiversity loss which will have further devastating consequences. The degradation and unsustainable use of these ecosystems have major drawbacks to the elimination of extreme poverty because this is one of the key factors that drive environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. The main goal of this work is to use NHC and digital repositories data (including scientific literature) to assess how biodiversity loss and habitat degradation affect ecosystem functioning and services provided by marine invertebrate communities of mangroves and seagrass meadows in the West and East African coast, using the case study of Mozambique and Príncipe's Island. These will lead to the construction of a comprehensive dataset, an ecological model and a framework adapted to marine invertebrate biodiversity from Mozambique's (MZ) and São Tomé and Príncipe's (STP) mangroves and seagrasses as tools:1) integrate and disseminate marine invertebrate biodiversity data gathered along a spatio-temporal scale; 2) compare marine invertebrate assemblies from pristine and impacted habitats in African countries and predict the progress of these communities to habitat degradation and biodiversity loss; and 3) manage ecosystem functioning and services delivered by marine invertebrate assemblages under anthropogenic and environmental pressure scenarios. Specifically this project intends to: 1. compile and integrate the available information contained in NHC and DED to develop a comprehensive spatio-temporal dataset on marine invertebrate biodiversity (e.g. species, number of individuals, local of occurrence and georeferencing, date of collection/observation), as well as mangroves and seagrasses distribution along the Mozambique's and Príncipe's coasts; 2. assess different indexes of invertebrate marine biodiversity, biodiversity and habitat spatio-temporal distribution; 3. develop an ecological network approach to assess the functional links of marine invertebrate communities within the studied habitats, and to refine their role in ecosystem functioning, as well as ecosystem services (ES) provided by marine invertebrates in mangroves and seagrasses from MZ and STP; 4. construct a model to evaluate the ecological responses of mangrove and seagrass invertebrate communities to habitat degradation and biodiversity loss and to predict multi-dimensional (spatial, temporal, and social) trade-offs in local/regional ecosystem services along a spatio-temporal gradient; 5. develop a practical framework to manage and preserve ecosystem functioning and services delivered by mangrove and seagrass marine invertebrates under a global change scenario. ABSTRACT: The littoral decapod crustacean populations of the islands of Faial and Pico were qualitatively sampled from 9 to 24 July 1989. Sampling methods consisted mainly of shore and SCUBA diving manual collecting on rocky substrates, but trawl nets and suction devices were also used on sandy bottoms. A total number of 41 species (16 families) were collected or observed. The following data are given under each species: locality(ies), depth and/or habitat, number, sex, ovigerous condition and sizes. Some faunistical, taxonomical and ecological remarks are made. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

- Abstract
The reproductive traits of female Palaemon longirostris were examined in this study. The mean fecundity was 957±282 SD. The mean egg volume increased 17% from the early to the late development stage. By using the allometric model, no simple volumetric relationship was found between brood size and carapace length at any egg stage. For both early and late egg stages, a negative allometric level was obtained. During embryogenesis, egg loss was estimated at 5%, with no apparent effect on female size. Size at maturity was studied using morphometric analyses, assuming that the attainment of sexual maturity involves morphological changes of the pleura in order to form a brood chamber. A Mature 1 analysis evidenced overlapping “growth-phase” lines, suggesting that adult females may moult to a resting condition after breeding. The obtained regression lines indicate the presence of different morphotypes, but do not correspond to young and adult prawns. To determine size at maturity, a Mature 2 analysis was run for the young-like morphotype in an attempt to locate an intersection point delimiting the young and the adult growth phases. The estimated size closely matched the size of the smallest ovigerous prawn.

- Abstract
Palaemon longirostriswas sampled monthly at 12 sites in the Mira River estuary (southwest Portugal) from October 1990 to September 1991. Animals were counted, measured, and sexed. The estuarine distribution of prawns appeared to follow the salinity displacement, the animals being found at river stations during summer and autumn when saline encroachment up the estuary was greater. During winter and spring when freshwater input from the river was greatest, and thus moving the salinity gradient toward the mouth, the prawns migrated downstream to brackish areas. Ovigerous females were collected only from estuarine areas (January to August), suggesting that reproduction does not take place in freshwater habitats. Higher percentages of females than males were generally observed. Females, particularly ovigerous ones, were larger than males.

- Abstract
Understanding the spatial occurrences and distribution of marine invertebrates in both countries can provide a valuable baseline, regarding information and trends on their coastal marine biodiversity., (Henrique Niza, Marta Bento, Luis F.
