The study described in this paper investigated the possible interference of spurious emissions from cellular phones on aircraft navigation and communication equipment. Six wireless phone technologies were investigated over three frequency ranges, which covered the receiving ranges of five aircraft systems. The aircraft systems examined were very-high frequency omnidirectional range (VOR), localizer (LOC), very high frequency communication (VHF), glide slope (GS), and global positioning system (GPS). Research was performed in a semi-anechoic chamber (SAC) and a reverberation chamber (RC), with the phone at a distance of 1 m from the receiving antenna. Two antenna orientations were tested in the SAC. Initial tests yielded the appropriate height from the receiving antenna above the ground plane that would produce a maximum field measurement. Keypad programming was used to simulate worst-case phone transmissions. Radiated power measurements were performed and analyzed taking into consideration path loss results from the RTCA/DO-233 study. None of the six phone technologies investigated exhibited a power level greater than a 38-dBm path loss level above the maximum sensitivity of the aircraft system antennae when tested 1 m away from the antenna. These results indicate that, for the aircraft systems tested (VOR, LOC, VHF, GS, and GPS), the antenna of these systems would not have detected the emissions of the phones used in this study (CDMA-Cellular, TDMA-11 Hz, TDMA-50 Hz Cellular and PCS, GSM, and DCS-1800). Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are extremely common, affecting people of all ages and health statuses. Although UTIs do not usually cause severe illness, in some cases they can lead to more serious complications, especially if their initial treatment is ineffective due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is an increasing issue, exacerbated by misdiagnosis and inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics, thus facilitating further resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the rates of AMR in Escherichia coli isolated from clinical urine specimens tested at the Balfour Hospital, Orkney, and determine trends related to patient risk factors. Antibiotic susceptibilities were tested for 100 isolates of uropathogenic E. coli using the VITEK 2 Compact (bioMérieux), and data were analysed using percentage resistance rates. Resistance rates were compared by patient sex, age and source (hospital versus community). The findings showed higher AMR in males compared with females, particularly for trimethoprim (TMP), with 52% in males and only 12% in females. AMR tended to be higher in E. coli isolated from hospital inpatients than from community specimens, except for amoxicillin (AMX) and co-amoxiclav. Finally, the study found that AMR of E. coli isolates was greater in patients aged over 50 than 18-50 years old, particularly for AMX and TMP. The highest resistance rates across all patient demographics were for AMX, implying that the use of this antibiotic for the treatment of E. coli UTIs is not appropriate.

Faecal pollution of water by bacteria has a negative effect on water quality and can pose a potential health hazard. Conventional surveillance of microbial water quality relies on the analysis of low-frequency spot samples and is thus likely to miss episodic or periodic pollution. This study aimed to investigate the potential of filter-feeding sponges for time-integrated biomonitoring of microbial water quality. Laboratory trials tested the effects of different ratios of bacterial abundance and the sequence of exposure on bacterial retention by the freshwater sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1759) to establish its potential to indicate bacterial exposure. Gemmule grown sponges were simultaneously exposed to Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis but at different ratios (Trial 1) or individually exposed to each bacterial species but in different sequential order (Trial 2). The E. coli and E. faecalis retained in each sponge was quantified by culture on selective agars. Data analysis was conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test and/or the Mann-Whitney U test to compare between the numbers of bacteria retained in each treatment. Additionally, the Wilcoxon matched-paired signed-rank test was used for comparison of the different bacterial abundances retained within each individual sponge. Sponges from all trials retained E. coli and E. faecalis in small numbers relative to the exposure (<0.05 % Trial 1 and <0.07 % Trial 2) but exhibited higher retention of E. coli . Higher abundance of either bacterial species resulted in significantly lower ( P <0.005) retention of the same species within sponges (Trial 1). An initial exposure to E. coli resulted in significantly higher ( P =0.040) retention of both bacterial species than when sponges were exposed to E. faecalis first (Trial 2).Bacterial retention by sponges was neither quantitatively representative of bacterial abundance in the ambient water nor the sequence of exposure. This implies either selective filtration or an attempt by sponges to prevent infection. However, freshwater sponges may still be useful in biomonitoring as qualitative time-integrated samplers of faecal indicator bacteria as they detect different bacteria present in the water even if their quantities cannot be estimated., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interests.
