Search

In the context of axion search with haloscopes, tunable cavity resonators with high quality factor and high effective volume at frequencies above about 8 GHz are central for probing the axion-photon coupling with the required sensitivity to reach the QCD axion models. Higher order modes in dielectrically-loaded cavities allow for higher effective volumes and larger quality factors compared to basic cylindrical cavities, but a proper cavity frequency tuning mechanism to probe broad axion mass ranges is yet not available. In this work, we report about the design and construction of a tunable prototype of a single-shell dielectric resonator with its axion-sensitive pseudo-TM$_{030}$ high-order mode at about 11 GHz frequency. A clamshell tuning method previously tested for empty cylindrical resonators has been perfected for this geometry through simulations and in situ tests conducted at cryogenic temperature. Tuning is accomplished in a range of about 2 $\%$ the central frequency, without significantly impacting the quality factor of about 175000. We report an axion dark matter search with a haloscope equipped with a microwave photon counter. The haloscope is a tunable high quality factor 3-dimensional microwave cavity placed in a magnetic field. The photon counter, operated cyclically, maps an incoming microwave photon onto the state of a superconducting transmon qubit. The measurement protocol continuously monitors the power emitted by the haloscope cavity as well as the dark count background, and enables tuning of the cavity frequency to probe different axion masses. With this apparatus we enhance by a factor 20 the search speed that can be reached with quantum-limited linear amplifiers, and set a new standard for probing the existence of axions with resonant detectors.

We report the first experimental results obtained with the new haloscope of the QUAX experiment located at Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN (LNF). The haloscope is composed of a OFHC Cu resonant cavity cooled down to about 30 mK and immersed in a magnetic field of 8 T. The cavity frequency was varied in a 6 MHz range between 8.831496 and 8.83803 GHz. This corresponds to a previously unprobed mass range between 36.52413 and 36.5511 $\mu$eV. We don't observe any excess in the power spectrum and set limits on the axion-photon coupling in this mass range down to $g_{a\gamma\gamma} < 0.861 \times 10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ with the confidence level set at $90\%$., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review D (https://journals.aps.org/prd/)

We report the first ever measurements of the thermalization length of low-energy electrons injected into solid para-hydrogen at a temperature \(T\approx 2.8\,\)K. The use of the pulsed Townsend photoinjection technique has allowed us to investigate the behavior of quasi-free electrons rather than of massive, slow negative charges as reported in all previous literature. We have found an average thermalization length \(\langle z_0\rangle\approx 260\,\)\AA\ which is 3 to 5 times longer than that in liquid helium at the same temperature., Comment: submitted to and accepted by The Journal of Chemical Physics

A traveling wave parametric amplifier has been integrated in the haloscope of the QUAX experiment. A search for dark matter axions has been performed with a high Q dielectric cavity immersed in a 8 T magnetic field and read by a detection chain having a system noise temperature of about 2.1 K at the frequency of 10.353 GHz. Scanning has been conducted by varying the cavity frequency using sapphire rods immersed into the cavity. At multiple operating frequencies, the sensitivity of the instrument was at the level of viable axion models.

A haloscope of the QUAX--$a\gamma$ experiment, composed of an high-Q resonant cavity immersed in a 8 T magnet and cooled to $\sim 4.5$~K is operated to search for galactic axion with mass $m_a\simeq42.8~\mu\text{eV}$. The design of the cavity with hollow dielectric cylinders concentrically inserted in a OFHC Cu cavity, allowed us to maintain a loaded quality-factor Q $\sim 300000$ during the measurements in presence of magnetic field. Through the cavity tuning mechanism it was possible to modulate the resonance frequency of the haloscope in the region $10.35337-10.35345$~GHz and thus acquire different dataset at different resonance frequencies. Acquiring each dataset for about 50 minutes, combining them and correcting for the axion's signal estimation-efficiency we set a limit on the axion-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}< 0.731\times10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ with the confidence level set at $90\%$.

The frequency band 1-15 GHz provides exciting prospects for resonant axion haloscopes as indicated by cosmological and astrophysical arguments. Among the challenges currently addressed to reach the required sensitivity, the development of high quality factor cavities that tolerate multi-Tesla fields plays a central role. We report a 3D resonator based on a right circular copper cavity with hollow cylinders that confine higher order modes around the cylinder axis. Its effective volume at 10.3\,GHz is $3.4 \cdot 10^{-2}$ liters, and under an 8\,T-field we measured an internal quality factor of more than 9 millions. These parameters demonstrate the potential of this unique resonator to probe galactic dark matter axion at remarkable scan rates of 15\,MHz/day when the cavity is readout by a quantum-limited receiver.

A haloscope of the QUAX--$a\gamma$ experiment composed of an oxygen-free high thermal conductivity-Cu cavity inside an 8.1 T magnet and cooled to $\sim200$ mK is put in operation for the search of galactic axion with mass $m_a\simeq43~\mu\text{eV}$. The power emitted by the resonant cavity is amplified with a Josephson parametric amplifier whose noise fluctuations are at the standard quantum limit. With the data collected in about 1 h at the cavity frequency $\nu_c=10.40176$ GHz, the experiment reaches the sensitivity necessary for the detection of galactic QCD-axion, setting the $90\%$ confidence level limit to the axion-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<0.639\times10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Spin-dependent fifth-forces are associated with particles beyond the standard model. In particular, light pseudo-scalar bosons mediate long-range forces, allowing mass to interact with spins. The search of these interactions can be performed by periodically varying the distance between a source mass and a spin ensemble, in order to modulate the force intensity and detect it with precision magnetometry techniques. In our setup the force arises from room temperature lead masses and is detected in a paramagnetic crystal at 4.2\,K, whose magnetisation is monitored by a SQUID-based magnetometer with the sensitivity of $53\,\mathrm{aT/\sqrt{Hz}}$. Our measurement places the most stringent constraints on a spin-mass interaction in the ranges 1\,cm to 10\,m and 10\,km to 300\,km, improving existing limits up to more than two orders of magnitude. We show that this experimental technique may be further leveraged to explore a vast region of the fifth force's parameter space, with an interaction range longer than a few centimetres., Comment: 5 figures, 10 pages

A photon-magnon hybrid system can be realised by coupling the electron spin resonance of a magnetic material to a microwave cavity mode. The quasiparticles associated with the system dynamics are the cavity magnon polaritons, which arise from the mixing of strongly coupled magnons and photons. We illustrate how these particles can be used to probe the magnetisation of a sample with a remarkable sensitivity, devising suitable spin-magnetometers which ultimately can be used to directly assess oscillating magnetic fields. Specifically, the capability of cavity magnon polaritons of converting magnetic excitations to electromagnetic ones, allows for translating to magnetism the quantum-limited sensitivity reached by state-of-the-art electronics. The potential of photon-magnon hybrid systems as building blocks for quantum information science has been widely demonstrated, and it is still the focus of much research. We leverage the strengths of this unique heterogeneous physical system in the field of precision physics beyond the standard model, where the sensitivity to the so-called "invisibles" is currently being boosted by quantum technologies. Here, we demonstrate that quanta of spin waves, driven by tiniest, effective magnetic field, can be detected in a large frequency band using a hybrid system as transducer. This result can be applied to the search of cosmological signals related, for example, to cold Dark Matter, which may directly interact with magnons. Our model of the transducer is based on a second-quantisation two-oscillators hybrid system, it matches the observations, and can be easily extended to thoroughly describe future large-scale ferromagnetic haloscopes., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The realization and characterization of a high quality factor resonator composed of two hollow-dielectric cylinders with its pseudo-TM$_{030}$ mode resonating at 10.9 GHz frequency is discussed. The quality factor was measured at the temperatures 300 K and 4 K obtaining $\mbox{Q}_{300\mbox{K}}=(150,000\pm 2,000)$ and $\mbox{Q}_{4\mbox{K}}=(720,000\pm 10,000)$respectively, the latter corresponding to a gain of one order of magnitude with respect to a traditional copper cylindrical-cavity with the corresponding TM$_{010}$ mode resonating at the same frequency. The implications to dark-matter axion-searches with cavity experiments are discussed showing that the gain in quality factor is not spoiled by a reduced geometrical coupling $C_{030}$ of the cavity mode to the axion field. This reduction effect is estimated to be at most 20%. Numerical simulations show that frequency tuning of several hundreds MHz is feasible.

Searches for dark matter axion involve the use of microwave resonant cavities operating in a strong magnetic field. Detector sensitivity is directly related to the cavity quality factor, which is limited, however, by the presence of the external magnetic field. In this paper we present a cavity of novel design whose quality factor is not affected by a magnetic field. It is based on a photonic structure by the use of sapphire rods. A ferromagnetic axion haloscope searches for Dark Matter in the form of axions by exploiting their interaction with electronic spins. It is composed of an axion-to-electromagnetic field transducer coupled to a sensitive rf detector. The former is a photon-magnon hybrid system, and the latter is based on a quantum-limited Josephson parametric amplifier. The hybrid system consists of ten 2.1 mm diameter YIG spheres coupled to a single microwave cavity mode by means of a static magnetic field. Our setup is the most sensitive rf spin-magnetometer ever realized. The minimum detectable field is $5.5\times10^{-19}\,$T with 9 h integration time, corresponding to a limit on the axion-electron coupling constant $g_{aee}\le1.7\times10^{-11}$ at 95% CL. The scientific run of our haloscope resulted in the best limit on DM-axions to electron coupling constant in a frequency span of about 120 MHz, corresponding to the axion mass range $42.4$-$43.1\,\mu$eV. thermal radiation emitted by a %hot cobalt wire in the temperature range from \(T\approx 400\,\)K up to melting. The radiation is linearly polarized perpendicular to the wire. \(P\) decreases from \(30\,\%\) just above room temperature down to \(6.5\,\%\) near melting and does not show any particular behavior neither at the martensitic {\em hcp}$-${\em fcc} transition at \(\approx 700\,\)K nor at the Curie point at \( \approx 1400\,\)K. However, \(P\) shows a rapid decrease for \(T\gtrsim 1000\,\)K and, contrary to previous measurements with tungsten wires, it hysteretically behaves if the temperature change is reversed. It is a straightforward result of electromagnetism that dipole oscillators radiate more strongly when they are synchronized, and that if there are $N$ dipoles, the overall emitted intensity scales with $N^2$. In atomic physics, such an enhanced radiative property appears when coherence among two-level identical atoms is established, and is well-known as "superradiance" \cite{Dicke:1954aa}. In superfluorescence (SF), atomic coherence develops via a self-organisation process stemming from the common radiated field, starting from a incoherently prepared population inversion \cite{Bonifacio:1975aa}. First demonstrated in a gas \cite{Skribanowitz:1973} and later in condensed matter systems \cite{Florian:1984}, its potential is currently being investigated in the fields of ultranarrow linewidth laser development for fundamental tests in physics \cite{Meiser:2009,Meiser:2010,Bohnet:2012aa,Norcia:2016, Norcia:2018}, and for the development of devices enabling entangled multi-photon quantum light sources \cite{Raino:2018aa,Angerer:2018aa}. A barely developed aspect in superradiance is related to the properties of the dipole array that generates the pulsed radiation field. In this work we establish the experimental conditions for formation of a macroscopic dipole via superfluorescence, involving the remarkable number of $4\times10^{12}$ atoms. Even though rapidly evolving in time, it represents a flexible test-bed in quantum optics. Self-driven atom dynamics, without the mediation of cavity QED nor quantum dots or quantum well structures, is observed in a cryogenically-cooled rare-earth doped material. We present clear evidence of a decay rate that is enhanced by more than 1-million times compared to that of independently emitting atoms. We thoroughly resolve the dynamics by directly measuring the intensity of the emitted radiation as a function of time.

The optical and scintillation properties of undoped, Si-doped, and Si, B co-doped GaAs samples were studied. The light yield specification and X-ray luminescence of GaAs over a wide IR region by using Si and InGaAs photodetectors are presented. The undoped GaAs demonstrated a narrow emission band at 838 nm (1.48 eV) and a low light output of about 2 ph/keV. The GaAs:Si is characterized by three broad luminescence bands at 830 nm (1.49 eV), 1070 nm (1.16 eV), 1335 nm (0.93 eV) and a light output of about 71 ph/keV. In the case of GaAs:(Si, B), four luminescence bands at 860 nm (1.44 eV), 930 nm (1.33 eV), 1070 nm (1.16 eV) and 1335 nm (0.93 eV) were observed. A high light yield higher than 125 ph/keV was estimated for the co-doped sample. The applications of low energy gap semiconductors as cryogenic scintillators for particle detection are discussed. The GaAs is a promising crystal for a cryogenic scintillator for the dark matter (DM) detection.

To account for the dark matter content in our Universe, post-inflationary scenarios predict for the QCD axion a mass in the range $(10-10^3)\,\mu\mbox{eV}$. Searches with haloscope experiments in this mass range require the monitoring of resonant cavity modes with frequency above 5\,GHz, where several experimental limitations occur due to linear amplifiers, small volumes, and low quality factors of Cu resonant cavities. In this paper we deal with the last issue, presenting the result of a search for galactic axions using a haloscope based on a $36\,\mbox{cm}^3$ NbTi superconducting cavity. The cavity worked at $T=4\,\mbox{K}$ in a 2\,T magnetic field and exhibited a quality factor $Q_0= 4.5\times10^5$ for the TM010 mode at 9\,GHz. With such values of $Q$ the axion signal is significantly increased with respect to copper cavity haloscopes. Operating this setup we set the limit $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<1.03\times10^{-12}\,\mbox{GeV}^{-1}$ on the axion photon coupling for a mass of about 37\,$\mu$eV. A comprehensive study of the NbTi cavity at different magnetic fields, temperatures, and frequencies is also presented.

Recently some of the authors proposed a search for galactic axions with mass about 0.2~$\mu$eV using a large volume resonant cavity, tens of cubic meters, cooled down to 4~K and immersed in a magnetic field of about 0.6~T generated inside the superconducting magnet of the KLOE experiment located at the National Laboratory of Frascati of INFN. This experiment, called KLASH (KLoe magnet for Axion SearcH), has a potential sensitivity on the axion-to-photon coupling, $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$, of about $6\times10^{-17}$ $\mbox{GeV}^{-1}$, reaching the region predicted by KSVZ\cite{KSVZ} and DFSZ\cite{DFSZ} models of QCD axions. Axions, originally proposed to solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, emerge now as leading candidates of WISP dark matter. The rich phenomenology associated to the light and stable QCD axion can be described as an effective magnetic field that can be experimentally investigated. For the QUAX experiment, dark matter axions are searched by means of their resonant interactions with electronic spins in a magnetized sample. In principle, axion-induced magnetization changes can be detected by embedding a sample in an rf cavity in a static magnetic field. In this work we describe the operation of a prototype ferromagnetic haloscope, with a sensitivity limited by thermal fluctuations and receiver noise. With a preliminary dark matter search, we are able to set an upper limit on the coupling constant of DFSZ axions to electrons $g_{aee}<4.9\times10^{-10}$ at 95\% C.L. for a mass of $58\,\mu$eV (i.\,e. 14\,GHz). This is the first experimental result with an apparatus exploiting the coupling between cosmological axions and electrons., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

This note presents a method to tune the resonant frequency $f_{0}$ of a rectangular microwave cavity. This is achieved using a liquid metal, GaInSn, to decrease the volume of the cavity. It is possible to shift $f_{0}$ by filling the cavity with this alloy, in order to reduce the relative distance between the internal walls. The resulting modes have resonant frequencies in the range $7\div8\,$GHz. The capability of the system of producing an Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurement has been tested by placing a 1 mm diameter Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) sphere inside the cavity, and producing a strong coupling between the cavity resonance and Kittel mode. In our effort to develop a new kind of detector for low-energy, low-rate energy deposition events we have investigated the cathodo- and radioluminescence of Ho:YAG and Ho:YLF single crystals in an extended wavelength range from $200\,$nm to $2200\,$nm. The emission spectra of both crystals show a much more intense emission in the infrared range than in the visible one. We estimate an infrared light yield of $40\,$photons/keV when exciting the crystals with X-rays of energy $\approx 30\,$keV. The main reason of this high value is due to the Ho$^{3+}$ ions energy levels scheme that allows efficient cross relaxation processes to occur even at low dopant concentration., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Journal of Luminescence

The current status of the QUAX R\&D program is presented. QUAX is a feasibility study for a detection of axion as dark matter based on the coupling to the electrons. We present a detection scheme to search for QCD axion dark matter, that is based on a direct interaction between axions and electrons explicitly predicted by DFSZ axion models. The local axion dark matter field shall drive transitions between Zeeman-split atomic levels separated by the axion rest mass energy $m_a c^2$. Axion-related excitations are then detected with an upconversion scheme involving a pump laser that converts the absorbed axion energy ($\sim $ hundreds of $\mu$eV) to visible or infrared photons, where single photon detection is an established technique. The proposed scheme involves rare-earth ions doped into solid-state crystalline materials, and the optical transitions take place between energy levels of $4f^N$ electron configuration. Beyond discussing theoretical aspects and requirements to achieve a cosmologically relevant sensitivity, especially in terms of spectroscopic material properties, we experimentally investigate backgrounds due to the pump laser at temperatures in the range $1.9-4.2$ K. Our results rule out excitation of the upper Zeeman component of the ground state by laser-related heating effects, and are of some help in optimizing activated material parameters to suppress the multiphonon-assisted Stokes fluorescence., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We present a more stringent upper limit on long-range axion-mediated forces obtained by the QUAX-g$_p$g$_s$ experiment, located at the INFN - Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. We investigate the possible coupling between the electron spins of a paramagnetic GSO crystal and unpolarized nucleons of lead disks by measuring variations of GSO magnetization with a dc-SQUID magnetometer. Such an induced magnetization can be interpreted as the effect of a long-range spin dependent interaction mediated by axions or Axion Like Particles (ALPs). The corresponding coupling strength is proportional to the CP violating term $g_p^eg_s^N$, i.e. the product of the pseudoscalar and scalar coupling constants of electron and nucleon, respectively. Previous upper limits are improved by one order of magnitude, namely $g_p^eg_s^N/(\hbar c) \le 4.3\times10^{-30}$ at 95% confidence level, in the interaction range $10^{-3}$ m $<\lambda_a<0.2$ m. We eventually discuss our plans to improve the QUAX-g$_p$g$_s$ sensitivity by a few orders of magnitude, which will allow us to investigate the $\vartheta\simeq 10^{-10}$ range of CP-violating parameter and test some QCD axion models., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, Physics Letters B, 2017

We have studied the cathodo- and radioluminescence of Nd:YAG and of Tm:YAG single crystals in an extended wavelength range up to $\approx 5\,\mu$m in view of developing a new kind of detector for low-energy, low-rate energy deposition events. Whereas the light yield in the visible range is as large as $\approx 10^{4}\,$photons/MeV, in good agreement with literature results, in the infrared range we have found a light yield $\approx 5\times 10^{4}\,$photons/MeV, thereby proving that ionizing radiation is particularly efficient in populating the low lying levels of rare earth doped crystals., Comment: submitted for publication in Journal of Luminescence

We propose a new technique to measure the infrared scintillation light yield of rare earth (RE) doped crystals by comparing it to near UV-visible scintillation of a calibrated Pr:(Lu$_{0.75}$Y$_{0.25}$)$_{3}$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ sample. As an example, we apply this technique to provide the light yield in visible and infrared range up to \SI{1700}{nm} of this crystal., Comment: submitted to NIM A

We demonstrate an all-optical method for manipulating the magnetization in a 1-mm YIG (yttrium-iron-garnet) sphere placed in a $\sim0.17\,$T uniform magnetic field. An harmonic of the frequency comb delivered by a multi-GHz infrared laser source is tuned to the Larmor frequency of the YIG sphere to drive magnetization oscillations, which in turn give rise to a radiation field used to thoroughly investigate the phenomenon. The radiation damping issue that occurs at high frequency and in the presence of highly magnetizated materials, has been overcome by exploiting magnon-photon strong coupling regime in microwave cavities. Our findings demonstrate an effective technique for ultrafast control of the magnetization vector in optomagnetic materials via polarization rotation and intensity modulation of an incident laser beam. We eventually get a second-order susceptibility value of $\sim10^{-7}$ cm$^2$/MW for single crystal YIG., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a proposal to search for QCD axions with mass in the 200 $\mu$eV range, assuming that they make a dominant component of dark matter. Due to the axion-electron spin coupling, their effect is equivalent to the application of an oscillating rf field with frequency and amplitude fixed by the axion mass and coupling respectively. This equivalent magnetic field would produce spin flips in a magnetic sample placed inside a static magnetic field, which determines the resonant interaction at the Larmor frequency. Spin flips would subsequently emit radio frequency photons that can be detected by a suitable quantum counter in an ultra-cryogenic environment. This new detection technique is crucial to keep under control the thermal photon background which would otherwise produce a too large noise., Comment: To appear on Physics of the Dark Universe

We report about a novel scheme for particle detection based on the infrared quantum counter concept. Its operation consists of a two-step excitation process of a four level system, that can be realized in rare earth-doped crystals when a cw pump laser is tuned to the transition from the second to the fourth level. The incident particle raises the atoms of the active material into a low lying, metastable energy state, triggering the absorption of the pump laser to a higher level. Following a rapid non-radiative decay to a fluorescent level, an optical signal is observed with a conventional detectors. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of such a scheme, we have investigated the emission from the fluorescent level $^4$S$_{3/2}$ (540 nm band) in an Er$^{3+}$-doped YAG crystal pumped by a tunable titanium sapphire laser when it is irradiated with 60 keV electrons delivered by an electron gun. We have obtained a clear signature this excitation increases the $^{4}I_{13/2}$ metastable level population that can efficiently be exploited to generate a detectable optical signal.

We report measurements of microwave (RF) generation in the centimeter band accomplished by irradiating a nonlinear KTiOPO$_4$ (KTP) crystal with a home-made, infrared laser at $1064\,$nm as a result of optical rectification (OR). The laser delivers pulse trains of duration up to $1\,\mu$s. Each train consists of several high-intensity pulses at an adjustable repetition rate of approximately $ 4.6\,$GHz. The duration of the generated RF pulses is determined by that of the pulse trains. We have investigated both microwave- and second harmonic (SHG) generation as a function of the laser intensity and of the orientation of the laser polarization with respect to the crystallographic axes of KTP., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Optics Letters, vol. 38 (2013)

We report measurements of the temperature $T $ dependence of the linear polarization $\langle P\rangle $ of the thermal radiation emitted by thin, incandescent tungsten wires. We investigated an interval ranging from a little above room temperature up to melting, $T_m\approx 3700\,$K. These are the first measurements in such wide a range. We found that $\langle P\rangle $ decreases with increasing $T.$ We obtained a satisfactory agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the Kirchhoff's law by using a Drude-type formula for the optical properties of tungsten. The validity of such formula is assessed in literature for $T\leq 2400 \,$K and for wavelengths in the range from visible up to $\lambda\approx 2.6\,\mu$m. We report on the design of a new type of electron gun to be used for experiments of infrared emission spectroscopy of rare gas excimers. It is based on a filament heated by means of a pack of rechargeable batteries floated atop the high-voltage power supply. The filament current is controlled by a feedback circuit including a superluminescent diode decoupled from the high voltage by means of an optical fiber. Our experiment requires that the charge injection is pulsed and constant and stable in time. This electron gun can deliver several tens of nC per pulse of electrons of energy up to $100\,$keV into the sample cell. New measurements to test the neutrality of matter by acoustic means are reported. The apparatus is based on a spherical capacitor filled with gaseous SF$_6$ excited by an oscillating electric field. The apparatus has been calibrated measuring the electric polarizability. Assuming charge conservation in the $\beta$ decay of the neutron, the experiment gives a limit of $\epsilon_\text{p-e}\lesssim1\cdot10^{-21}$ for the electron-proton charge difference, the same limit holding for the charge of the neutron. Previous measurements are critically reviewed and found incorrect: the present result is the best limit obtained with this technique.

An experimental set-up for the measurement of the Casimir effect at separations larger than a few microns is presented. The apparatus is based on a mechanical resonator and uses a homodyne detection technique to sense the Casimir force in the plane-parallel configuration. We report new measurements of the infrared emission spectrum of Xe$_{2}$ excimers produced by electron impact in dense gas at room temperature. These measurements extend the density range previously explored by a factor of two. We have now reached a pressure $P\approx 3.3 $MPa, corresponding to a gas density $N\approx 8\cdot 10^{26} $m$^{-3}$ in both pure Xe gas and in a Ar--Xe mixture. The analysis of the changes of the spectrum induced by the interaction with the gaseous environment shows how cooperative-- and many-body effects develop with increasing density. Electron--impact excitation of Xe atoms in pure Xe gas and in a Xe(10 %)--Ar(90 %) mixture has led to the discovery of infrared (IR) luminescence of Xe$_{2}$ excimers. The investigation of the emission spectrum at low gas density has allowed the identification of the molecular states involved in the transition. When the gas density is increased to values up to 40 times larger than the density of the ideal gas at standard temperature and pressure, the interaction of the excimer with the dense environment produces a strong red--shift of the spectrum that is interpreted in terms of many--body effects., Comment: to be submitted to Physica Scripta. We present an investigation of the Xe$_{2}$ excimer emission spectrum observed in the near infrared range about 7800 cm$^{-1}$ in pure Xe gas and in an Ar (90%) --Xe (10%) mixture and obtained by exciting the gas with energetic electrons. The Franck--Condon simulation of the spectrum shape suggests that emission stems from a bound--free molecular transition never studied before. The states involved are assigned as the bound $(3)0_{u}^{+} $ state with $6p [1/2]_{0}$ atomic limit and the dissociative $(1)0_{g}^{+}$ state with $6s [3/2]_{1}$ limit. Comparison with the spectrum simulated by using theoretical potentials shows that the dissociative one does not reproduce correctly the spectrum features., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. We report new measurements of the near infrared (NIR) Xe$_2^*$ excimer fluorescence in an electron--beam--excited Ar (90%)--Xe (10 %) mixture at room temperature. Previous measurements up to a density $N\approx 2\times 10^{26}$ m$^{-3}$ discovered a broad excimer fluorescence band at $\approx 7800$ cm$^{-1},$ whose center is red--shifted by increasing $N$ (A. F. Borghesani, G. Bressi, G. Carugno, E. Conti, and D. Iannuzzi, {\em J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf 115}, 6042 (2001)). The shift has been explained by assuming that the energy of the optical active electron in the molecule is shifted by the density--dependent Fermi shift and by accounting for the solvation effect due to the environment. We have extended the density range up to $N\approx 6\times 10^{26}$ m$^{-3}, $ confirming the previous measurements and extending the validity of the interpretative model. A detailed analysis of the width of the fluorescence band gives a value of 2.85 nm for the size of the investigated excimer state. The Casimir effect is a well-known macroscopic consequence of quantum vacuum fluctuations, but whereas the static effect (Casimir force) has long been observed experimentally, the dynamic Casimir effect is up to now undetected. From an experimental viewpoint a possible detection would imply the vibration of a mirror at gigahertz frequencies. Mechanical motions at such frequencies turn out to be technically unfeasible. Here we present a different experimental scheme where mechanical motions are avoided, and the results of laboratory tests showing that the scheme is practically feasible. A multisection liquid argon ionization detector was developed by the DBA collaboration to study the double beta- decay of $^{100}$Mo. The experiment was carried out in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy. The detector design and main characteristics are described. The $\beta \beta (2\nu)$ decay of $^{100}$Mo was observed and its half-life measured: $T_{1/2}=[7.2 \pm 0.9(stat) \pm 1.8(syst)] \times 10^{18}$ yr. Limits on the 0$\nu $ and 0$\nu \chi ^{0}$ modes of the decay were obtained: $T_{1/2}> 8.4(4.9) \times 10^{21}$ yr and $T_{1/2}> 4.1(3.2)\times 10^{20}$ yr at 68% (90%) C.L., respectively. In addition the upper limits on the $^{42}$Ar content and $^{222}$Rn activity in liquid Ar were found to be $4.3 \times 10^{-21}$ g/g and $1.2 \times 10^{-3}$ Bq/kg, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 10 authors

We report on the measurement of the Casimir force between conducting surfaces in a parallel configuration. The force is exerted between a silicon cantilever coated with chromium and a similar rigid surface and is detected looking at the shifts induced in the cantilever frequency when the latter is approached. The scaling of the force with the distance between the surfaces was tested in the 0.5 - 3.0 $\mu$m range, and the related force coefficient was determined at the 15% precision level., Comment: 4 Figures
