The food industry produces a large amount of food byproducts that, when appropriately valorized, can become a renewable source of sustainable materials. The valorization of these byproducts requires a new set of green technologies. For example, fish farming, one of the fastest growing sectors, uses only 30% to 40% of the fish as food, with the remaining 60% to 70% being a byproduct. One example of valorization of fish byproducts is the upcycling of fish skin into leather. This new fish leather has interesting properties, in part due to its microstructure, but also has new shortcomings like the high hydrophilicity and water absorption. To mitigate these issues, a water protecting coating was developed using only two other food byproducts: epoxidized soybean oil and the fatty acid trimer Pripol. These two building blocks were deposited on leather and then crosslinked to create a strong network that made leather hydrophobic, with a water contact angle >120° without the need for fluorine or silicone chemistry or the use of nanoparticles. The coating was applied via dip-coating and was cured at low temperature as required by fish leather without the need for initiators, catalysts, which are mostly toxic, or UV light. The same strategy could also be applied to cotton, showing that its application is not limited only to leather. The coating showed good adhesion to the substrate and excellent water resistance, making the leather and the cotton hydrophobic and substantially reducing the water absorption, without changing the breathability, flexibility and microstructure of the substrate. This work demonstrates how high performing materials can be created within a green chemistry and circular economy framework, with results that can be relevant for other textile materials, contributing to the effort for developing sustainable alternatives for providing hydrophobicity. Conversion of waste biomass into valuable functional materials accomplishes the concept of circular economy in the development of sustainable waste management, and also recovery of such resources possibly reduces the requirement of feedstocks. In this scenario, the development of methodologies toward the direct conversion of the raw biomass into solid adsorbent materials without the use of any templates is highly desirable, but exceptionally challenging due to the complexity of the process. Here the direct synthesis of 3D porous carbon traps by a simple, cost‐effective, and template‐free process starting from a kitchen‐based recipe and fermented food waste is described. Precisely, a robust carbon trap is formed with a spongy structure and highly interconnected hierarchical pores after the pyrolysis of a rice‐based foam in the air. The developed materials float on water and interact efficiently with cationic dyes at static conditions. Importantly, such performance of the 3D carbon traps is not affected in the presence of anionic dyes, indicating the excellent selectivity towards the adsorption of cationic dyes. The adsorbent can be easily recovered and reused for up to 3 cycles without releasing any byproducts, thus, without causing hazardous risk of any secondary pollution to the environment. In this work, we report the synthesis of an active material for supercapacitors (SCs), namely α-Fe2O3/carbon composite (C-Fe2O3) made of elongated nanoparticles linearly connected into a worm-like morphology, by means of electrospinning followed by a calcination/carbonization process. The resulting active material powder can be directly processed in the form of slurry to produce SC electrodes with mass loadings higher than 1 mg cm−2 on practical flat current collectors, avoiding the need for bulky porous substrate, as often reported in the literature. In aqueous electrolyte (6 M KOH), the so-produced C-Fe2O3 electrodes display capacity as high as ~140 mAh g−1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1, while showing an optimal rate capability (capacity of 32.4 mAh g−1 at a scan rate of 400 mV s−1). Thanks to their poor catalytic activity towards water splitting reactions, the electrode can operate in a wide potential range (−1.6 V–0.3 V vs. Hg/HgO), enabling the realization of performant quasi-symmetric SCs based on electrodes with the same chemical composition (but different active material mass loadings), achieving energy density approaching 10 Wh kg−1 in aqueous electrolytes. Abstract: We demonstrate the fabrication of nanocomposite coatings, of organic-capped colloidal TiO2 nanorods dispersed into a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix, with rising value of refractive index from the bottom to the top layers, and UV-induced surface wettability alteration, in a reversible manner. This behaviour is attributable to preferential dispersion of the TiO2 nanoparticles towards the superficial layers of the coatings. Above a critical TiO2 loading, the nanorods at the surface form aggregates deteriorating the optical and the surface properties of the nanocomposites. The optimal conditions for nanocomposite films preparation in terms of optimized nanorods dispersion, optical clarity, and surface smoothness are determined. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Thick films of nanocomposites made of poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix and colloidal anatase TiO2 nanorods fillers were prepared by solvent mixing and solution drop casting. Different concentrations of nanorods were tested in order to examine the influence of the nanoscale fillers on the composites material properties and structure. The thermal properties of the samples were investigated through thermogravimetric analysis, which showed an increase in thermal stability of the nanocomposites on increasing nanorods concentration, for the range of concentrations used. The viscoelastic properties were investigated through dynamic mechanical analysis, which showed an increase in both the storage and loss modulus on increasing nanorods concentration. The in-depth distribution of the TiO2 nanorods in the matrix was evaluated through cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, which pointed out a uniform dispersion of mesoscale nanorods agglomerates with increasing diameter of 100–200nm range on increasing nanorods concentration.
