We present Cryoscope -- a new 50 sq. deg field-of-view, 1.2 m aperture, K-dark survey telescope to be located at Dome C, Antarctica. Cryoscope has an innovative optical-thermal design wherein the entire telescope is cryogenically cooled. Cryoscope also explores new detector technology to cost-effectively tile the full focal plane. Leveraging the dark Antarctic sky and minimizing telescope thermal emission, Cryoscope achieves unprecedented deep, wide, fast and red observations, matching and exceeding volumetric survey speeds from the Ultraviolet Explorer, Vera Rubin Observatory, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. By providing coverage beyond wavelengths of 2 $\mu$m, we aim to create the most comprehensive dynamic movie of the most obscured reaches of the Universe. Cryoscope will be a dedicated discovery engine for electromagnetic emission from coalescing compact binaries, Earth-like exoplanets orbiting cold stars, and multiple facets of time-domain, stellar and solar system science. We present a detailed analysis of the internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations (MPs) in 28 Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) across a wide field of view, extending from the innermost regions to the clusters' outskirts. Using astro-photometric catalogs from ground-based observations, Gaia, and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we identify first- (1P) and second-population (2P) stars, and study the internal dynamics of MPs using high-precision Gaia DR3 and HST proper motions. Our results reveal that while the 1P transitions from isotropy to slight tangential anisotropy toward the outer regions, 2P stars become increasingly radially anisotropic beyond the half-light radius. We also explore the connection between the dynamics of MPs and the clusters' structural and dynamical properties, finding statistically significant differences in the anisotropy profiles of dynamically young and non-relaxed clusters, particularly beyond the 1-2 half-light radii. In these regions, 1P stars transition from isotropic to slightly tangentially anisotropic motion, while 2P stars become more radially anisotropic. In contrast, dynamically older clusters, with mixed MPs, exhibit weaker relative differences. Furthermore, clusters with orbits closer to the Galactic center exhibit larger dynamical differences between 1P and 2P stars than those with larger peri-Galactic radii. These findings are consistent with a scenario where 2P stars form in a more centrally concentrated environment, where the interaction with the Milky Way tidal field plays a crucial role in the dynamical evolution of MPs, especially of 1P., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures (4 pages and 9 figures in appendix). The origin of extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTO) in star clusters younger than 2 Gyr still challenges our current understanding of stellar evolution. Exploiting data from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), we investigate eMSTOs in a large sample of 32 Galactic open clusters younger than 2.4 Gyr. We first validate Gaia rotational velocities from Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) spectra by comparing them with literature values and assessing their correlation with magnetic activity measurements from LAMOST spectra. We detect a general positive correlation between turn-off color and projected stellar rotation, with slow-rotating stars predominantly found on the bluer side of the turn-off. Comparing our observations with theoretical models, we find that the eMSTO morphology is well-reproduced by a single population formed with a high rotation rate, and observed with rotation axis inclination ranging between 0$^\circ$ (pole-on) and 90$^\circ$ (edge-on). This contrasts with observations of Magellanic Clouds clusters, where a population of non-rotating stars appears to be ubiquitous in clusters younger than 700 Myr. However, we note that our interpretation, while successfully explaining the overall eMSTO morphology, cannot fully explain the observed projected rotational velocities. Additionally, two young clusters, NGC 3532 and NGC 2287, exhibit moderate evidence of a split main sequence in color and rotation, suggesting a possible small spread in the initial rotation rate. Finally, we advise caution in determining the ages of young clusters from non-rotating isochrones, as neglecting the effects of stellar rotation can impact the isochrone dating by up to factors of 5-20%., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The KEYSTONE project aims to enhance our understanding of solar-like oscillators by delivering a catalogue of global asteroseismic parameters (${\Delta\nu}$ and ${\nu_{\rm max}}$) for 173 stars, comprising mainly dwarfs and subgiants, observed by the K2 mission in its short-cadence mode during campaigns 6-19. We derive atmospheric parameters and luminosities using spectroscopic data from TRES, astrometric data from $\textit{Gaia}$, and the infrared flux method (IRFM) for a comprehensive stellar characterisation. Asteroseismic parameters are robustly extracted using three independent methods, complemented by an iterative refinement of the spectroscopic analyses using seismic ${\log g}$ values to enhance parameter accuracy. Our analysis identifies new detections of solar-like oscillations in 159 stars, providing an important complement to already published results from previous campaigns. The catalogue provides homogeneously derived atmospheric parameters and luminosities for the majority of the sample. Comparison between spectroscopic ${T_{\rm eff}}$ and those obtained from the IRFM demonstrates excellent agreement. Stellar mergers and accretion events have been crucial in shaping the evolution of the Milky Way (MW). These events have been dynamically identified and chemically characterised using red giants and main-sequence stars. RR Lyrae (RRL) variables can play a crucial role in tracing the early formation of the MW since they are ubiquitous, old (t$\ge$10 Gyr) low-mass stars and accurate distance indicators. We exploited Data Release 3 of the GALAH survey to identify 78 field RRLs suitable for chemical analysis. Using synthetic spectra calculations, we determined atmospheric parameters and abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, Y, and Ba. Most of our stars exhibit halo-like chemical compositions, with an iron peak around [Fe/H]$\approx -$1.40, and enhanced Ca and Mg content. Notably, we discovered a metal-rich tail, with [Fe/H] values ranging from $-$1 to approximately solar metallicity. This sub-group includes almost ~1/4 of the sample, it is characterised by thin disc kinematics and displays sub-solar $\alpha$-element abundances, marginally consistent with the majority of the MW stars. Surprisingly, they differ distinctly from typical MW disc stars in terms of the s-process elements Y and Ba. We took advantage of similar data available in the literature and built a total sample of 535 field RRLs for which we estimated kinematical and dynamical properties. We found that metal-rich RRLs (1/3 of the sample) likely represent an old component of the MW thin disc. We also detected RRLs with retrograde orbits and provided preliminary associations with the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, Helmi, Sequoia, Sagittarius, and Thamnos stellar streams., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 29 pages, 20 figures

Young {\alpha}-rich (YAR) stars within the old Galactic thick disk exhibit a dual characteristic of relative youth determined with asteroseismology and abundance enhancement in {\alpha} elements measured from high-resolution spectroscopy. The youth origin of YAR stars has been proposed to be binary evolution via mass transfer or stellar mergers. If that is the case, YAR stars should spin rapidly and thus be magnetically active, because they are mass and angular momentum gainers. In this study, to seek this binary footprint we select YAR stars on the main-sequence turn-off or the subgiant branch (MSTO-SGB) from APOGEE DR17, whose ages and projected rotation velocities (vsini) can be precisely measured. With APOGEE vsini and LAMOST spectra, we find that YAR stars are indeed fast rotators and magnetically active. In addition, we observe low [C/N] ratios and high Gaia RUWE in some YAR stars, suggesting that these MSTO-SGB stars probably have experienced mass transfer from red-giant companions. Our findings underscore that magnetic activity can serve as a valuable tool for probing the binary evolution for other chemically peculiar stars, such as red giants with lithium anomalies and carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Detailed chemical studies of F/G/K -- or Solar-type -- stars have long been routine in stellar astrophysics, enabling studies in both Galactic chemodynamics, and exoplanet demographics. However, similar understanding of the chemistry of M and late-K dwarfs -- the most common stars in the Galaxy -- has been greatly hampered both observationally and theoretically by the complex molecular chemistry of their atmospheres. Here we present a new implementation of the data-driven \textit{Cannon} model, modelling $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], and [Ti/Fe] trained on low-medium resolution optical spectra ($4\,000-7\,000\,$\SI{}{\angstrom}) from 103 cool dwarf benchmarks. Alongside this, we also investigate the sensitivity of optical wavelengths to various atomic and molecular species using both data-driven and theoretical means via a custom grid of MARCS synthetic spectra, and make recommendations for where MARCS struggles to reproduce cool dwarf fluxes. Under leave-one-out cross-validation, our \textit{Cannon} model is capable of recovering $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], and [Ti/Fe] with precisions of 1.4\%, $\pm0.04\,$dex, $\pm0.10\,$dex, and $\pm0.06\,$dex respectively, with the recovery of [Ti/Fe] pointing to the as-yet mostly untapped potential of exploiting the abundant -- but complex -- chemical information within optical spectra of cool stars., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. A wide-field near-infrared survey of the Galactic disk and bulge/bar(s) is supported by a large representation of the community of Galactic astronomers. The combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and large field of view make Roman uniquely able to study the crowded and highly extincted lines of sight in the Galactic plane. A ~1000 deg2 survey of the bulge and inner Galactic disk would yield an impressive dataset of ~120 billion sources and map the structure of our Galaxy. The effort would foster subsequent expansions in numerous dimensions (spatial, depth, wavelengths, epochs). In this study we combine asteroseismic, spectroscopic and kinematic information to perform a detailed analysis of a sample of 16 stars from the Kepler field. Our selection focuses on stars that appear to contradict Galactic chemical evolution models: young and $\alpha$-rich, old and metal-rich, as well as other targets with unclear classification in past surveys. Kinematics are derived from Gaia DR3 parallaxes and proper motions, and high-resolution spectra from HIRES/Keck are used to calculate chemical abundances for over 20 elements. This information is used to perform careful checks on asteroseismic masses and ages derived via grid-based modelling. Among the seven stars previously classified as young and $\alpha$-rich, only one seems to be an unambiguously older object masking its true age. We confirm the existence of two very old ($\geq$11 Gyr), super metal rich ($\geq$0.1 dex) giants. These two stars have regular thin disc chemistry and in-plane solar circle orbits which fit well in the picture of radial migration via the churning mechanism. The alternative explanation that these stars have younger ages would require mass-loss rates which strongly increases with increasing metallicity. Gaia EDR3 has provided unprecedented data that generate a lot of interest in the astrophysical community, despite the fact that systematics affect the reported parallaxes at the level of ~ 10 muas. Independent distance measurements are available from asteroseismology of red-giant stars with measurable parallaxes, whose magnitude and colour ranges more closely reflect those of other stars of interest. In this paper, we determine distances to nearly 12,500 red-giant branch and red clump stars observed by Kepler, K2, and TESS. This is done via a grid-based modelling method, where global asteroseismic observables, constraints on the photospheric chemical composition, and on the unreddened photometry are used as observational inputs. This large catalogue of asteroseismic distances allows us to provide a first comparison with Gaia EDR3 parallaxes. Offset values estimated with asteroseismology show no clear trend with ecliptic latitude or magnitude, and the trend whereby they increase (in absolute terms) as we move towards redder colours is dominated by the brightest stars. The correction model proposed by Lindegren et al. (2021) is not suitable for all the fields considered in this study. We find a good agreement between asteroseismic results and model predictions of the red clump magnitude. A wide-field zenith-looking telescope operating in a mode similar to Time-Delay-Integration (TDI) or drift scan imaging can perform an infrared sky survey without active pointing control but it requires a high-speed, low-noise infrared detector. Operating from a hosted payload platform on the International Space Station (ISS), the Emu space telescope employs the paradigm-changing properties of the Leonardo SAPHIRA electron avalanche photodiode array to provide powerful new observations of cool stars at the critical water absorption wavelength (1.4 $\mu$m) largely inaccessible to ground-based telescopes due to the Earth's own atmosphere. Cool stars, especially those of spectral-type M, are important probes across contemporary astrophysics, from the formation history of the Galaxy to the formation of rocky exoplanets. Main sequence M-dwarf stars are the most abundant stars in the Galaxy and evolved M-giant stars are some of the most distant stars that can be individually observed. The Emu sky survey will deliver critical stellar properties of these cool stars by inferring oxygen abundances via measurement of the water absorption band strength at 1.4 $\mu$m. In this work we combine information from solar-like oscillations, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to derive stellar ages, chemical abundances and kinematics for a group of seven metal-poor Red Giants and characterise them in a multidimensional chrono-chemo-dynamical space. Chemical abundance ratios were derived through classical spectroscopic analysis employing 1D LTE atmospheres on Keck/HIRES spectra. Stellar ages, masses and radii were calculated with grid-based modelling, taking advantage of availability of asteroseismic information from Kepler. The dynamical properties were determined with Galpy using Gaia EDR3 astrometric solutions. Our results suggest that underestimated parallax errors make the effect of Gaia parallaxes more important than different choices of model grid or -- in the case of stars ascending the RGB -- mass-loss prescription. Two of the stars in this study are identified as potentially evolved halo blue stragglers. Four objects are likely members of the accreted Milky Way halo, and their possible relationship with known accretion events is discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We introduce the SAPP (Stellar Abundances and atmospheric Parameters Pipeline), the prototype of the code that will be used to determine parameters of stars observed within the core program of the PLATO space mission. The pipeline is based on the Bayesian inference and provides effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, chemical abundances, and luminosity. The code in its more general version can have a much wider range of applications. It can also provide masses, ages, and radii of stars and can be used for stars of stellar types not targeted by the PLATO core program, such as red giants. We validate the code on a set of 27 benchmark stars that includes 19 FGK-type dwarfs, 6 GK-type sub-giants, and 2 red giants. Our results suggest that combining various observables is the optimal approach, as it allows to break degeneracies between different parameters and yields more accurate values of stellar parameters and more realistic uncertainties. For the PLATO core sample, we obtain a typical uncertainty of 27 ($\rm{syst.}$) $\pm$ 37 ($\rm{stat.}$) K for T$_{\rm{eff}}$, 0.00 $\pm$ 0.01 dex for log$g$, 0.02 $\pm$ 0.02 dex for metallicity [Fe/H], -0.01 $\pm$ 0.03 R$_\odot$ for radii, -0.01 $\pm$ 0.05 M$_\odot$ for stellar masses, and -0.14 $\pm$ 0.63 Gyrs for ages. We also show that the best results are obtained by combining the $\nu_{max}$ scaling relation and stellar spectra. Stellar models for -2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.5 that have been computed for variations in the C:N:O abundance ratio (for two different values of [CNO/Fe]) are compared with HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the globular clusters (GCs) 47 Tuc, NGC 6362, M5, M5, M55, and M92. The bolometric corrections used to transpose the models to the observed planes are based on new MARCS synthetic spectra that incorporate improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O. On the assumption of well-supported distance moduli and reddenings, isochrones for [O/Fe] = 0.6 and [m/Fe] = 0.4 for the other alpha elements, which are favoured by binary stars in GCs, generally reproduce the main features of observed colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to within ~ 0.03 mag. In particular, they appear to match the spreads in the observed (M_F336W - M_F438W)_0 colours that are spanned by CN-weak and CN-strong stars along the lower giant branch quite well, but not the bluest giants, which are suspected to be N-poor ([N/Fe] <~ -0.5). Both the absolute (M_F438W - M_F606W)_0 colours and the variations in these colours at a given M_F606W magnitude on the giant branch are difficult to explain unless the reddest stars are C-rich ([C/Fe] >~ +0.5). New, high-resolution MARCS synthetic spectra have been calculated for more than a dozen mixtures of the metals allowing, in turn, for variations in C:N:O, [CNO/Fe], and enhanced abundances of C, O, Mg, and Si. Bolometric Corrections (BCs) for many of the broad-band filters currently in use have been generated from these spectra. Due to improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O, the BCs for UV and blue passbands, in particular, differ substantially from those derived from previous MARCS models. These differences, and the effects on BCs of varying the abundances of the metals, are shown in a number of instructive plots. Stellar evolutionary grids for -2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.5 have also been computed for the different mixtures. Isochrones based on these tracks are intercompared on the theoretical H-R diagram and on a few of the colour-magnitude diagrams that can be constructed from HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) F336W, F438W, F606W, F814W, F110W, and F160W observations. Our picture of the age-metallicity relation for Milky Way globular clusters (MWGCs) is still highly incomplete, and the majority of MWGCs lack self-consistent age measurements. Here, we exploit deep, homogenous multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of nine MWGCs located towards the inner Milky Way to measure their relative ages, in most cases for the first time. Our relative age measurements are designed to be directly comparable to the large set of MWGC ages presented by VandenBerg et al. (2013, V13), using identical filters, evolutionary models, and bolometric corrections, extended to the higher extinction values relevant to our target clusters. Adopting the V13 MWGC age scale, our relative age measurements imply that our target clusters are consistently very old, with a mean age of 12.9$\pm$0.4 Gyr, with the exception of the young metal-rich MWGC NGC 6342. We perform two tests to validate the precision of our methodology, and discuss the implications of our target cluster loci in the MWGC age-metallicity plane. We present the third and final data release of the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (K2 GAP) for Campaigns C1-C8 and C10-C18. We provide asteroseismic radius and mass coefficients, $\kappa_R$ and $\kappa_M$, for $\sim 19,000$ red giant stars, which translate directly to radius and mass given a temperature. As such, K2 GAP DR3 represents the largest asteroseismic sample in the literature to date. K2 GAP DR3 stellar parameters are calibrated to be on an absolute parallactic scale based on Gaia DR2, with red giant branch and red clump evolutionary state classifications provided via a machine-learning approach. Combining these stellar parameters with GALAH DR3 spectroscopy, we determine asteroseismic ages with precisions of $\sim 20-30\%$ and compare age-abundance relations to Galactic chemical evolution models among both low- and high-$\alpha$ populations for $\alpha$, light, iron-peak, and neutron-capture elements. We confirm recent indications in the literature of both increased Ba production at late Galactic times, as well as significant contribution to r-process enrichment from prompt sources associated with, e.g., core-collapse supernovae. With an eye toward other Galactic archaeology applications, we characterize K2 GAP DR3 uncertainties and completeness using injection tests, suggesting K2 GAP DR3 is largely unbiased in mass/age and with uncertainties of $2.9\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.1\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $6.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ in $\kappa_R$ & $\kappa_M$ for red giant branch stars and $4.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $11\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.9\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ for red clump stars. Identifying stars found in the Milky Way as having formed in situ or accreted can be a complex and uncertain undertaking. We use Gaia kinematics and APOGEE elemental abundances to select stars belonging to the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) and Sequoia accretion events. These samples are used to characterize the GSE and Sequoia population metallicity distribution functions, elemental abundance patterns, age distributions, and progenitor masses. We find that the GSE population has a mean [Fe/H] $\sim -1.15$ and a mean age of $10-12$ Gyr. GSE has a single sequence in [Mg/Fe] vs [Fe/H] consistent with the onset of SN Ia Fe contributions and uniformly low [Al/Fe] of $\sim -0.25$ dex. The derived properties of the Sequoia population are strongly dependent on the kinematic selection. We argue the selection with the least contamination is $J_{\phi}/J_{\mbox{tot}} < -0.6$ and $(J_z - J_R)/J_{\mbox{tot}} < 0.1$. This results in a mean [Fe/H] $\sim -1.3$ and a mean age of $12-14$ Gyr. The Sequoia population has a complex elemental abundance distribution with mainly high [Mg/Fe] stars. We use the GSE [Al/Fe] vs [Mg/H] abundance distribution to inform a chemically-based selection of accreted stars, which is used to remove possible contaminant stars from the GSE and Sequoia samples., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present a new identity card for the cluster NGC 6440 in the Galactic Bulge. We have used a combination of high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope images, wide-field ground-based observations performed with the ESO-FORS2, and the public survey catalog Pan-STARRS, to determine the gravitational center, projected density profile and structural parameters of this globular from resolved star counts. The new determination of the cluster center differs by ~ 2" (corresponding to 0.08 pc) from the previous estimate, which was based on the surface brightness peak. The star density profile, extending out to 700" from the center and suitably decontaminated from the Galactic field contribution, is best-fitted by a King model with significantly larger concentration ($c=1.86\pm0.06$) and smaller core radius ($r_c=6.4"\pm0.3"$) with respect to the literature values. By taking advantage of high-quality optical and near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams, we also estimated the cluster age, distance and reddening. The luminosity of the RGB-bump was also determined. This study indicates that the extinction coefficient in the bulge, in the direction of the cluster has a value ($R_V=2.7$) that is significantly smaller than that traditionally used for the Galaxy ($R_V=3.1$). The corresponding best-fit values of the age, distance and color excess of NGC 6440 are 13 Gyr, 8.3 kpc and $E(B-V)\sim 1.27$, respectively. These new determinations also allowed us to update the values of the central ($t_{rc}=2.5\ 10^7$ yr) and half-mass ($t_{rh}=10^9$ yr) relaxation times, suggesting that NGC 6440 is in a dynamically evolved stage., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 19 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables

We present the results of a medium resolution optical spectroscopic survey of 92 cool ($3,000 \lesssim T_{\rm eff} \lesssim 4,500\,$K) southern TESS candidate planet hosts, and describe our spectral fitting methodology used to recover stellar parameters. We quantify model deficiencies at predicting optical fluxes, and while our technique works well for $T_{\rm eff}$, further improvements are needed for [Fe/H]. To this end, we developed an updated photometric [Fe/H] calibration for isolated main sequence stars built upon a calibration sample of 69 cool dwarfs in binary systems, precise to $\pm0.19\,$dex, from super-solar to metal poor, over $1.51 < {\rm Gaia}~(B_P-R_P) < 3.3$. Our fitted $T_{\rm eff}$ and $R_\star$ have median precisions of 0.8% and 1.7%, respectively and are consistent with our sample of standard stars. We use these to model the transit light curves and determine exoplanet radii for 100 candidate planets to 3.5% precision and see evidence that the planet-radius gap is also present for cool dwarfs. We establish a quantitative relationship between photometric and spectroscopic detections of solar-like oscillations using ab initio, three-dimensional (3D), hydrodynamical numerical simulations of stellar atmospheres. We present a theoretical derivation as proof of concept for our method. We perform realistic spectral line formation calculations to quantify the ratio between luminosity and radial velocity amplitude for two case studies: the Sun and the red giant $\epsilon$ Tau. Luminosity amplitudes are computed based on the bolometric flux predicted by 3D simulations with granulation background modelled the same way as asteroseismic observations. Radial velocity amplitudes are determined from the wavelength shift of synthesized spectral lines with methods closely resembling those used in BiSON and SONG observations. Consequently, the theoretical luminosity to radial velocity amplitude ratios are directly comparable with corresponding observations. For the Sun, we predict theoretical ratios of 21.0 and 23.7 ppm/[m/s] from BiSON and SONG respectively, in good agreement with observations 19.1 and 21.6 ppm/[m/s]. For $\epsilon$ Tau, we predict K2 and SONG ratios of 48.4 ppm/[m/s], again in good agreement with observations 42.2 ppm/[m/s], and much improved over the result from conventional empirical scaling relations which gives 23.2 ppm/[m/s]. The NASA-$\it{TESS}$ mission presents a treasure trove for understanding the stars it observes and the Milky Way, in which they reside. We present a first look at the prospects for Galactic and stellar astrophysics by performing initial asteroseismic analyses of bright ($G < 11$) red giant stars in the $\it{TESS}$ Southern Continuous Viewing Zone (SCVZ). Using three independent pipelines, we detect $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$ in 41% of the 15,405 star parent sample (6,388 stars), with consistency at a level of $\sim 2\%$ in $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\sim 5\%$ in $\Delta\nu$. Based on this, we predict that seismology will be attainable for $\sim 3\times10^{5}$ giants across the whole sky, subject to improvements in analysis and data reduction techniques. The best quality $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data, for 5,574 stars where pipelines returned consistent results, provide high quality power spectra across a number of stellar evolutionary states. This makes possible studies of, for example, the Asymptotic Giant Branch bump (AGBb). We demonstrate that mixed $\ell=1$ modes and rotational splitting are cleanly observed in the 1-year data set. By combining $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data with $\it{TESS}$-HERMES, $\it{SkyMapper}$, APOGEE and $\it{Gaia}$ we demonstrate the potential for Galactic archaeology studies using the data, which provides good age precision and accuracy that reproduces the age of high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ stars and relationships between mass and kinematics from studies based on $\it{Kepler}$. Better quality astrometry and simpler target selection than the $\it{Kepler}$ sample makes this data ideal for studies of the local star formation history and evolution of the Galactic disc. These results provide a strong case for detailed spectroscopic follow-up in the CVZs to complement that which has been (or will be) collected by current surveys. We apply the spectroscopy-based stellar-color regression (SCR) method to perform an accurate photometric re-calibration of the second data release from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS DR2). From comparison with a sample of over 200,000 dwarf stars with stellar atmospheric parameters taken from GALAH+ DR3 and with accurate, homogeneous photometry from $Gaia$ DR2, zero-point offsets are detected in the original photometric catalog of SMSS DR2, in particular for the gravity- and metallicity-sensitive $uv$ bands. For $uv$ bands, the zero-point offsets are close to zero at very low extinction, and then steadily increase with $E (B - V)$, reaching as large as 0.174 and 0.134 mag respectively, at $E (B - V) \sim 0.5$ mag. These offsets largely arise from the adopted dust term in the transformations used by SMSS DR2 to construct photometric calibrators from the ATLAS reference catalog. For the $gr$ bands, the zero-point offsets exhibit negligible variations with SFD $E(B - V )$, due to their tiny coefficients on the dust term in the transformation. Our study also reveals small, but significant, spatial variations of the zero-point offsets in all $uvgr$ bands. APOGEE and GALAH are two high resolution multi-object spectroscopic surveys that provide fundamental stellar parameters and multiple elemental abundance estimates for about half a million stars in the Milky Way. Both surveys observe in different wavelength regimes and use different data reduction pipelines leading to significant offsets and trends in stellar parameters and abundances for the common stars observed in both surveys. Such systematic differences/offsets in stellar parameters and abundances make it difficult to effectively utilise them to investigate Galactic abundance trends in spite of the unique advantage provided by their complementary sky coverage and different Milky Way components they observe. Hence, we use the \textit{Cannon} data-driven method selecting a training set of 4418 common stars observed by both surveys. This enables the construction of two catalogues, one with the APOGEE scaled and the other with the GALAH scaled stellar parameters. Using repeat observations in APOGEE and GALAH, we find high precision in metallicity (~ 0.02-0.4 dex) and alpha abundances (~ 0.02-0.03 dex) for spectra with good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 80 for APOGEE, SNR > 40 for GALAH). We use open and globular clusters to validate our parameter estimates and find small scatter in metallicity (0.06 dex) and alpha abundances (0.03 dex) in APOGEE scaled case. Open clusters are unique tracers of the history of our own Galaxy's disk. According to our membership analysis based on \textit{Gaia} astrometry, out of the 226 potential clusters falling in the footprint of GALAH or APOGEE, we find that 205 have secure members that were observed by at least one of the survey. Furthermore, members of 134 clusters have high-quality spectroscopic data that we use to determine their chemical composition. We leverage this information to study the chemical distribution throughout the Galactic disk of 21 elements, from C to Eu. The radial metallicity gradient obtained from our analysis is $-$0.076$\pm$0.009 dex kpc$^{-1}$, which is in agreement with previous works based on smaller samples. Furthermore, the gradient in the [Fe/H] - guiding radius (r$_{\rm guid}$) plane is $-$0.073$\pm$0.008 dex kpc$^{-1}$. We show consistently that open clusters trace the distribution of chemical elements throughout the Galactic disk differently than field stars. In particular, at given radius, open clusters show an age-metallicity relation that has less scatter than field stars. As such scatter is often interpreted as an effect of radial migration, we suggest that these differences are due to the physical selection effect imposed by our Galaxy: clusters that would have migrated significantly also had higher chances to get destroyed. The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2% of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70%), K2-HERMES (17%), TESS-HERMES (5%), and a subset of ancillary observations (8%) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters $T_\text{eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], $v_\text{mic}$, $v_\text{broad}$ & $v_\text{rad}$ using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) and 1D MARCS model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from $Gaia$ DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65% dwarfs, 34% giants, and 1% other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62% young low-$\alpha$, 9% young high-$\alpha$, 27% old high-$\alpha$, and 2% stars with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -1$. Based on kinematics, 4% are halo stars. Statistical studies of exoplanets and the properties of their host stars have been critical to informing models of planet formation. Numerous trends have arisen in particular from the rich Kepler dataset, including that exoplanets are more likely to be found around stars with a high metallicity and the presence of a "gap" in the distribution of planetary radii at 1.9$R_\oplus$. Here we present a new analysis on the Kepler field, using the APOGEE spectroscopic survey to build a metallicity calibration based on Gaia, 2MASS and Stromgren photometry. This calibration, along with masses and radii derived from a Bayesian isochrone fitting algorithm, is used to test a number of these trends with unbiased, photometrically derived parameters, albeit with a smaller sample size in comparison to recent studies. We recover that planets are more frequently found around higher metallicity stars; over the entire sample, planetary frequencies are $0.88\pm0.12$ percent for [Fe/H]<0 and $1.37\pm0.16$ percent for [Fe/H]$\geq$0 but at two sigma we find that the size of exoplanets influences the strength of this trend. We also recover the planet radius gap, along with a slight positive correlation with stellar mass. We conclude that this method shows promise to derive robust statistics of exoplanets. The metal-poor stars in the bulge are important relics of the Milky Way's formation history, as simulations predict that they are some of the oldest stars in the Galaxy. In order to determine if they are truly ancient stars, we must understand the origins of this population. Currently, it is unclear if the metal-poor stars in the bulge ([Fe/H] < -1 dex) are merely halo interlopers, a unique accreted population, part of the boxy/peanut-shaped (B/P) bulge or a classical bulge population. In this work, we use spectra from the VLT/FLAMES spectrograph to obtain metallicity estimates using the Ca-II triplet (CaT) of 473 bulge stars (187 of which have [Fe/H]<-1 dex), targeted using SkyMapper photometry. We also use Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions to infer the Galactic positions and velocities along with orbital properties for 523 bulge stars. We employ a probabilistic orbit analysis and find that about half of our sample has a > 50\% probability of being bound to the bulge, and half are halo interlopers. We also see that the occurrence rate of halo interlopers increases steadily with decreasing metallicity across the full range of our sample (-3 < [Fe/H] < 0.5). Our examination of the kinematics of the confined compared to the unbound stars indicates the metal-poor bulge ([Fe/H] < -1 dex) comprises at least two populations; those confined to the boxy/peanut bulge and halo stars passing through the inner galaxy. We combine asteroseismology, optical high-resolution spectroscopy, and kinematic analysis for 26 halo red giant branch stars in the \textit{Kepler} field in the range of $-2.5<[\mathrm{{Fe}/{H}}]<-0.6$. After applying theoretically motivated corrections to the seismic scaling relations, we obtain an average mass of $0.97\pm 0.03\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ for our sample of halo stars. Although this maps into an age of $\sim 7\,\mathrm{Gyr}$, significantly younger than independent age estimates of the Milky Way stellar halo, we considerer this apparently young age is due to the overestimation of stellar mass in the scaling relations. There is no significant mass dispersion among lower red giant branch stars ($\log g>2$), which constrains a relative age dispersion to $<18\%$, corresponding to $<2\,\mathrm{Gyr}$. The precise chemical abundances allow us to separate the stars with [{Fe}/{H}]$>-1.7$ into two [{Mg}/{Fe}] groups. While [$\alpha$/{Fe}] and [{Eu}/{Mg}] ratios are different between the two subsamples, [$s$/Eu], where $s$ stands for Ba, La, Ce, and Nd, does not show a significant difference. These abundance ratios suggest that the chemical evolution of the low-Mg population is contributed by type~Ia supernovae, but not by low-to-intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a constraint on its star formation timescale as $100\,\mathrm{Myr}<\tau<300\,\mathrm{Myr}$. We also do not detect any significant mass difference between the two [{Mg}/{Fe}] groups, thus suggesting that their formation epochs are not separated by more than 1.5 Gyr., Comment: 44 pages. accepted version

The zero point of the reddening toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been the subject of some dispute. Its uncertainty propagates as a systematic error for methods which measure the extragalactic distance scale through knowledge of the absolute extinction of LMC stars. In an effort to resolve this issue, we used three different methods to calibrate the most widely-used metric to predict LMC extinction, the intrinsic color of the red clump, $(V-I)_{RC,0}$, for the inner $\sim$3 degrees of that galaxy. The first approach was to empirically calibrate the color zeropoints of the BaSTI isochrones over a wide metallicity range of ${\Delta}\rm{[Fe/H]} \approx 1.10$ using measurements of red clump stars in 47 Tuc, the Solar Neighborhood, and NGC 6791. From these efforts we also measure these properties of the Solar Neighborhood red clump, ($V-I$, $G_{BP}-K_{s}$, $G-K_{s}$, $G_{RP}-K_{s}$, $J-K_{s}$, $H-K_{s}$, $M_{I}$, $M_{Ks}$)$_{RC,0} =$ (1.02, 2.75, 2.18, 1.52, 0.64, 0.15, $-$0.23, $-$1.63). The second and third methods were to compare the observed colors of the red clump to those of Cepheids and RR Lyrae in the LMC. With these three methods, we estimated the intrinsic color of the red clump of the LMC to be $(V-I)_{RC,0,\rm{LMC}} = \{ \approx 0.93,0.91 \pm 0.02,0.89 \pm 0.02\}$ respectively, and similarly using the first and third method we estimated $ (V-I)_{RC,0,\rm{SMC}} = \{\approx 0.85,0.84 \pm 0.02 \}$ respectively for the Small Magellanic Cloud. We estimate the luminosities to be $M_{I,RC,\rm{LMC}}=-0.26$ and $M_{I,RC,\rm{SMC}}=-0.37$. The Gaia HR diagram shows the presence of apparently young stars at high tangential velocities. Using a simple analytical model I show that these stars are likely to be blue stragglers. Once normalized to red giant stars, the fraction of nearby halo blue stragglers is of order 20 percent, and remarkably close to that measured in dwarf galaxies. Motivated by this similarity, I apply to field blue stragglers scaling relations inferred from blue stragglers in dwarf galaxies. Doing this for the Milky Way halo returns an average stellar density of 3.4 x 10^-5 Msun/pc^3 and a dark matter density of ~0.006 Msun/pc^3 ~ 0.22 GeV/cm^3 within 2 kpc from the Sun. These values compare favourably to other determinations available in the literature, but are based on an independent set of assumptions. A few considerations of this methodology are discussed, most notably that the correlation between the dark matter halo core-density and stellar mass seen in dwarf galaxies seems to hold also for the nearby Milky Way halo., Comment: ApJ accepted. The HR 1614 overdensity in velocity space and has for a long time been known as an old (~2 Gyr) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]~0.2) nearby moving group that has a dissolving cluster origin. The existence of such old and metal-rich groups in the solar vicinity is quite unexpected since the vast majority of nearby moving groups are known to be young. In the light of new and significantly larger data sets we aim to re-investigate the properties and origin of the HR 1614 moving group. To identify and characterise the HR 1614 moving group we use astrometric data from Gaia DR2; distances, extinction, and reddening corrections from the StarHorse code; elemental abundances from the GALAH and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys; and photometric metallicities from the SkyMapper survey. Bayesian ages were estimated for the SkyMapper stars. Since the Hercules stream is the closest kinematical structure to the HR 1614 moving group in velocity space, we use it for comparison purposes. Stars that are likely to be members of the two groups were selected based on their space velocities. The HR 1614 moving group is located mainly at negative U velocities, does not form an arch of constant energy in the U-V space and is tilted in V. The overdensity is not chemically homogeneous but that its stars exist at a wide range of both metallicities, ages, and elemental abundance ratios. They are essentially similar to what is observed in the Galactic thin and thick disks, a younger population (~3 Gyr) that is metal-rich (-0.2<[Fe/H]<0.4) and alpha-poor. It should therefore not be considered as a dissolving open cluster, or an accreted population. We suggest that HR 1614 has a complex origin that could be explained by combining several different mechanisms such as resonances with the Galactic bar and spiral structure, phase-mixing of dissolving spiral structure, and phase-mixing due to an external perturbation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

[Abridged] Ensemble studies of red-giant stars with exquisite asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric constraints offer a novel opportunity to recast and address long-standing questions concerning the evolution of stars and of the Galaxy. Here, we infer masses and ages for nearly 5400 giants with available Kepler light curves and APOGEE spectra, and discuss some of the systematics that may affect the accuracy of the inferred stellar properties. First, we look at age-chemical-abundances relations. We find a dearth of young, metal-rich stars, and the existence of a significant population of old (8-9 Gyr), low-[$\alpha$/Fe], super-solar metallicity stars, reminiscent of the age and metallicity of the well-studied open cluster NGC6791. The age-chemo-kinematic properties of these stars indicate that efficient radial migration happens in the thin disk. We find that ages and masses of the nearly 400 $\alpha$-element-rich red-giant-branch (RGB) stars in our sample are compatible with those of an old (~11 Gyr), nearly coeval, chemical-thick disk population. Using a statistical model, we show that 95% of the population was born within ~1.5 Gyr. Moreover, we find a difference in the vertical velocity dispersion between low- and high-[$\alpha$/Fe] populations, confirming their different chemo-dynamical histories. We then exploit the almost coeval $\alpha$-rich population to gain insight into processes that may have altered the mass of a star along its evolution, which are key to improve the mapping of the observed stellar mass to age. We find evidence for a mean integrated RGB mass loss <$\Delta$M>= 0.10 $\pm$ 0.02 Msun and that the occurrence of massive (M $\gtrsim$ 1.1 Msun) $\alpha$-rich stars is of the order of 5% on the RGB, and significantly higher in the RC, supporting the scenario in which most of these stars had undergone interaction with a companion., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 26 pages, 24 figures, catalogue available via cds

In the current era of Gaia and large, high signal to noise stellar spectroscopic surveys, there is an unmet need for a reliable library of fundamentally calibrated stellar effective temperatures based on accurate stellar diameters. Here we present a set of precision diameters and temperatures for a sample of 6 dwarf, 5 sub-giant, and 5 giant stars observed with the PIONIER beam combiner at the VLTI. Science targets were observed in at least two sequences with five unique calibration stars each for accurate visibility calibration and to reduce the impact of bad calibrators. We use the standard PIONIER data reduction pipeline, but bootstrap over interferograms, in addition to employing a Monte-Carlo approach to account for correlated errors by sampling stellar parameters, limb darkening coefficients, and fluxes, as well as predicted calibrator angular diameters. The resulting diameters were then combined with bolometric fluxes derived from broadband Hipparcos-Tycho photometry and MARCS model bolometric corrections, plus parallaxes from Gaia to produce effective temperatures, physical radii, and luminosities for each star observed. Our stars have mean angular diameter and temperatures uncertainties of 0.8% and 0.9% respectively, with our sample including diameters for 10 stars with no pre-existing interferometric measurements. The remaining stars are consistent with previous measurements, with the exception of a single star which we observe here with PIONIER at both higher resolution and greater sensitivity than was achieved in earlier work., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 22 pages, 7 figures

We characterize the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage kinematic structure recently discovered in the Galactic halo using photometric metallicities from the SkyMapper survey, and kinematics from Gaia radial velocities measurements. By examining the metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) of stars binned in kinematic/action spaces, we find that the $\sqrt{J_R}$ vs $L_z$ space allows for the cleanest selection of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage stars with minimal contamination from disc or halo stars formed in situ or in other past mergers. Stars with $30 \leq \sqrt{J_R} \leq 50$ (kpc km s$^{-1})^{1/2}$ and $-500 \leq L_z \leq 500$ kpc km s$^{-1}$ have a narrow MDF centered at [Fe/H] $= -1.17$ dex with a dispersion of 0.34 dex. This [Fe/H] estimate is more metal-rich than literature estimates by $0.1-0.3$ dex. Based on the MDFs, we find that selection of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage stars in other kinematic/action spaces without additional population information leads to contaminated samples. The clean Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage sample selected according to our criteria is slightly retrograde and lies along the blue sequence of the high $V_T$ halo CMD dual sequence. Using a galaxy mass-metallicity relation derived from cosmological simulations and assuming a mean stellar age of 10 Gyr we estimate the mass of the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage progenitor satellite to be $10^{8.85-9.85}$ M$_{\odot}$, which is consistent with literature estimates based on disc dynamic and simulations. We revisit the analysis of the bright multiplanet system K2-93, discovered with data taken by the K2 mission. This system contains five identified planets ranging in size from sub-Neptune to Jupiter size. The K2 data available at the discovery of the system only showed single transits for the three outer planets, which allowed weak constraints to be put on their periods. As these planets are interesting candidates for future atmospheric studies, a better characterization of the host star and tighter constraints on their orbital periods are essential. Using new data from the K2 mission taken after the discovery of the system, we perform an asteroseismic characterization of the host star. We are able to place strong constraints on the stellar parameters and obtain a value for the stellar mass of $1.22^{+0.03}_{-0.02}\, \rm M_{\odot}$, a stellar radius of $1.30\pm 0.01\, \rm R_{\odot}$, and an age of $2.07^{+0.36}_{-0.27}$ Gyr. We present isochrone ages and initial bulk metallicities ($\rm [Fe/H]_{bulk}$, by accounting for diffusion) of 163,722 stars from the GALAH Data Release 2, mainly composed of main sequence turn-off stars and subgiants ($\rm 7000 K>T_{eff}>4000 K$ and $\rm log g>3$ dex). The local age-metallicity relationship (AMR) is nearly flat but with significant scatter at all ages; the scatter is even higher when considering the observed surface abundances. After correcting for selection effects, the AMR appear to have intrinsic structures indicative of two star formation events, which we speculate are connected to the thin and thick disks in the solar neighborhood. We also present abundance ratio trends for 16 elements as a function of age, across different $\rm [Fe/H]_{bulk}$ bins. In general, we find the trends in terms of [X/Fe] vs age from our far larger sample to be compatible with studies based on small ($\sim$ 100 stars) samples of solar twins but we now extend it to both sub- and super-solar metallicities. The $\alpha$-elements show differing behaviour: the hydrostatic $\alpha$-elements O and Mg show a steady decline with time for all metallicities while the explosive $\alpha$-elements Si, Ca and Ti are nearly constant during the thin disk epoch (ages $\lessapprox $ 12 Gyr). The s-process elements Y and Ba show increasing [X/Fe] with time while the r-process element Eu have the opposite trend, thus favouring a primary production from sources with a short time-delay such as core-collapse supernovae over long-delay events such as neutron star mergers.

In this study we use a sample of about 9 million SkyMapper stars with metallicities to investigate the properties of the two stellar populations seen in the high-velocity ($V_{\rm T} > 200$ km/s) Gaia DR2 Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Based on 10,000 red giant branch (RGB) stars (out of 75,000 with high velocity), we find that the two sequences have different metallicity distribution functions; one peaks at $-1.4$ dex (blue sequence) and the other at $-0.7$ dex (red sequence). Isochrones with ages in the range $11$-$13.5$ Gyr, and metallicities chosen to match the observations for each sequence, fit the turnoffs and broad RGBs well, indicating that the two populations formed at comparable times within the uncertainties. We find that the mean tangential velocity of disk stars increases steadily with decreasing metallicity, and that the red sequence is made up of the high-velocity stars at the lowest metallicities of the thick-disk population. Using relative number densities, we further find that the red-sequence stars are more centrally concentrated in the Galaxy, and we estimate the radial scale length of this population to be on the order of $2$-$3$ kpc. The blue-sequence stars, on the other hand, follow a nearly flat radial density profile. The importance of studying the Gaia DR2 parallax zero-point by external means was underlined by Lindegren et al. (2018), and initiated by several works making use of Cepheids, eclipsing binaries, and asteroseismology. Despite a very efficient elimination of basic-angle variations, a small fluctuation remains and shows up as a small offset in the Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By combining astrometric, asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and photometric constraints, we undertake a new analysis of the Gaia parallax offset for nearly 3000 red-giant branch (RGB) and 2200 red clump (RC) stars observed by Kepler, as well as about 500 and 700 red giants (both RGB and RC) selected by the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program in campaigns 3 and 6. Engaging into a thorough comparison of the astrometric and asteroseismic parallaxes, we are able to highlight the influence of the asteroseismic method, and measure parallax offsets in the Kepler field that are compatible with independent estimates from literature and open clusters. Moreover, adding the K2 fields to our investigation allows us to retrieve a clear illustration of the positional dependence of the zero-point, in general agreement with the information provided by quasars. Lastly, we initiate a two-step methodology to make progress in the simultaneous calibration of the asteroseismic scaling relations and of the Gaia DR2 parallax offset, which will greatly benefit from the gain in precision with the third Data Release of Gaia., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

(Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. Chemistry and kinematic studies can determine the origins of stellar population across the Milky Way. The metallicity distribution function of the bulge indicates that it comprises multiple populations, the more metal-poor end of which is particularly poorly understood. It is currently unknown if metal-poor bulge stars ([Fe/H] $<$ -1 dex) are part of the stellar halo in the inner most region, or a distinct bulge population or a combination of these. Cosmological simulations also indicate that the metal-poor bulge stars may be the oldest stars in the Galaxy. In this study, we successfully target metal-poor bulge stars selected using SkyMapper photometry. We determine the stellar parameters of 26 stars and their elemental abundances for 22 elements using R$\sim$ 47,000 VLT/UVES spectra and contrast their elemental properties with that of other Galactic stellar populations. We find that the elemental abundances we derive for our metal-poor bulge stars have much lower overall scatter than typically found in the halo. This indicates that these stars may be a distinct population confined to the bulge. If these stars are, alternatively, part of the inner-most distribution of the halo, this indicates that the halo is more chemically homogeneous at small Galactic radii than at large radii. We also find two stars whose chemistry is consistent with second-generation globular cluster stars. The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is a planned 11.25-m aperture facility with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. A rebirth of the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Maunakea, MSE will use 4332 fibers operating at three different resolving powers (R ~ 2500, 6000, 40000) across a wavelength range of 0.36-1.8mum, with dynamical fiber positioning that allows fibers to match the exposure times of individual objects. MSE will enable spectroscopic surveys with unprecedented scale and sensitivity by collecting millions of spectra per year down to limiting magnitudes of g ~ 20-24 mag, with a nominal velocity precision of ~100 m/s in high-resolution mode. Mira variables are useful distance indicators, due to their high luminosities and well-defined period-luminosity relation. We select 1863 Miras from SAAO and MACHO observations to examine their use as distance estimators in the Milky Way. We measure a distance to the Galactic centre of $R_0 = 7.9 \pm 0.3$ kpc, which is in good agreement with other literature values. The uncertainty has two components of $\sim$0.2 kpc each: the first is from our analysis and predominantly due to interstellar extinction, the second is due to zero-point uncertainties extrinsic to our investigation, such as the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In an attempt to improve existing period-luminosity calibrations, we use theoretical models of Miras to determine the dependence of the period-luminosity relation on age, metallicity, and helium abundance, under the assumption that Miras trace the bulk stellar population. We find that at a fixed period of $\log P = 2.4$, changes in the predicted $K_s$ magnitudes can be approximated by $\Delta M_{Ks} \approx -0.109(\Delta \rm{[Fe/H]}) + 0.033( {\Delta}t/\rm{Gyr}) + 0.021 ({\Delta}Y/0.01)$, and these coefficients are nearly independent of period. The expected overestimate in the Galactic centre distance from using an LMC-calibrated relation is $\sim$0.3 kpc. This prediction is not validated by our analysis; a few possible reasons are discussed. It is well known that the magnetic activity of solar type stars decreases with age, but it is widely debated in the literature whether there is a smooth decline or if there is an early sharp drop until 1-2 Gyr followed by a relatively inactive constant phase. We revisited the activity-age relation using time-series observations of a large sample of solar twins whose precise isochronal ages and other important physical parameters have been determined. We measured the Ca II H and K activity indices using 9000 HARPS spectra of 82 solar twins. We measured an average solar activity of $S_{\rm MW}$ = 0.1712 $\pm$ 0.0017 during solar magnetic cycles 23$-$24 covered by HARPS observations and we also inferred an average of $S_{\rm MW}$ = 0.1694 $\pm$ 0.0025 for cycles 10$-$24, anchored on a S index vs. sunspot number correlation. Also, a simple relation between the average and dispersion of the activity levels of solar twins was found. This enabled us to predict the stellar variability effects on the age-activity diagram and, consequently, estimate the chromospheric age uncertainties due to the same phenomena. The age-activity relation is still statistically significant up to ages around 6$-$7 Gyr, in agreement with previous works using open clusters and field stars with precise ages. Our research confirms that Ca II H \& K lines remain a useful chromospheric evolution tracer until stars reach ages of at least 6$-$7 Gyr. We found an evidence that, for the most homogeneous set of old stars, the chromospheric activity indices seem to continue decreasing after the solar age towards the end of the main-sequence. Our results indicate that a significant part of the scatter observed in the age-activity relation of solar twins can be attributed to stellar cycle modulations effects. The availability of reliable bolometric corrections and reddening estimates, rather than the quality of parallaxes will be one of the main limiting factors in determining the luminosities of a large fraction of Gaia stars. With this goal in mind, we provide Gaia G, BP and RP synthetic photometry for the entire MARCS grid, and test the performance of our synthetic colours and bolometric corrections against space-borne absolute spectrophotometry. We find indication of a magnitude-dependent offset in Gaia DR2 G magnitudes, which must be taken into account in high accuracy investigations. Our interpolation routines are easily used to derive bolometric corrections at desired stellar parameters, and to explore the dependence of Gaia photometry on Teff, log(g), [Fe/H], alpha-enhancement and E(B-V). GALAH is a large-scale magnitude-limited southern stellar spectroscopic survey. Its second data release (GALAH DR2) provides values of stellar parameters and abundances of 23 elements for 342,682 stars (Buder et al.). Here we add a description of the public release of radial velocities with a typical accuracy of 0.1 km/s for 336,215 of these stars, achievable due to the large wavelength coverage, high resolving power and good signal to noise ratio of the observed spectra, but also because convective motions in stellar atmosphere and gravitational redshift from the star to the observer are taken into account. In the process we derive medians of observed spectra which are nearly noiseless, as they are obtained from between 100 and 1116 observed spectra belonging to the same bin with a width of 50 K in temperature, 0.2 dex in gravity, and 0.1 dex in metallicity. Publicly released 1181 median spectra have a resolving power of 28,000 and trace the well-populated stellar types with metallicities between -0.6 and +0.3. Note that radial velocities from GALAH are an excellent match to the accuracy of velocity components along the sky plane derived by Gaia for the same stars. The level of accuracy achieved here is adequate for studies of dynamics within stellar clusters, associations and streams in the Galaxy.
