The “L. Cattaneo” Anatomy Museum wax anatomical models in Bologna, works of great historical, artistic and scientific value, have been used since the beginning of the 18th century for medical sciences students practical demonstrations. For this work, which aims to use innovative diagnostic investigation techniques for advancement either in education and scientific communication through a new “remote” method for the museum fruition, we used anatomical preparations and both normal human anatomical and pathological one wax models, from the dawn of the nineteenth according to the new Morgagni’s theories. We acquired a lot of high resolution photographs as many as tomographic images than processed using innovative representation techniques through new generation hardware equipment and an original software especially developed for full three-dimensional display. The several high-resolution photographs acquired around the object, combined with the results of the X-ray computed tomography (CT) investigation, show the 3D reconstruction of the object with their internal parts reassembled and, at the same time, reveal hidden structures and materials used, all in a non-invasive way. The CT analysis was performed using a specifically designed system, developed for application on Cultural Heritage at the Physics and Astronomy Department of Bologna University. La tomografia computerizzata, comunemente nota come TAC o CT (computed tomography), è una tecnica di imaging diagnostico che utilizza i raggi X per investigare l'interno degli oggetti indagati in modo del tutto non invasivo........

Questo volume raccoglie gli atti del Convegno Nazionale e dell’Associazione Italiana Radioprotezione Medica durante il quale è stata condotta un’approfondita riflessione su vari aspetti riguardanti la prevenzione, la diagnosi, la terapia e la radioprotezione medica delle lavoratrici esposte alle radiazioni ionizzanti, con i connessi eventuali risvolti medico-legali.

In non-invasive diagnostics of paintings, the X-ray imaging is an important resource to acquire significant information on the state of conservation of support and pictorial surface. To this aim, generally, the radiographic technique is enough to fulfil the most part of these needs. However, there are particular cases where a tomographic investigation is needful to obtain information on the inner part of the support [1]. In fact Computed Tomography (CT) allows overcoming the main limitation of radiography: the overlapping of all depth levels in the resulting image, giving no information in the direction parallel to the propagation of X-rays beam. CT allows obtaining cross-sections of the object, the so-called "slices", which represent a faithful density map of each point in the considered section [2]. The painting so called "La Muta", made by Raffaello Sanzio around 1507, is an oil on wood (64 × 48 cm2) that represents a woman portrait. It is considered among the best examples of Raffaello’s portraiture of early maturity [3]. The painting, kept in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche at the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, is currently located at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD) in Florence to be subjected to restoration. Before starting the intervention, some diagnostic tests have been performed, including an X-ray radiography, which has showed the presence of many galleries in the wooden support due to Xylophages insects. However, the radiographic technique does not show the depth level of the tunnels for assessing whether they can eventually cause damage to the paint layer. This type of information, very important to preserve the pictorial surface, has been obtained using the CT investigation. The acquisition has been performed using a transportable tomographic system at the OPD and the data set has been processed in order to present an immediate and accessible result to the restorers for the next phase of consolidation of the painted surface. The CT investigation on the Raffaello’s masterpiece has been carried out in the framework of a collaboration between the INFN-CHNet network and the OPD. In this work, the transportable CT system and data processing are described.

Inner ear diseases include not only hearing loss but also equilibrium disorders. In these cases the normal life is seriously affected and simple actions like walking and moving are seriously impaired by the appearing of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, vomit. Imaging the inner ear is a very interesting radiological challenge, in fact present medical CT scanners do not have the spatial resolution necessary to image the fine structures of the inner ear. As a consequence, when inner ear diseases are treated surgically, the physician has to proceed to the operation without any trustable image guidance. In addition, without good imaging, it is not possible to follow up the therapeutical effects of medications. Therefore a dedicated and performing CT system for inner ear imaging would be extremely useful also to avoid unnecessary surgeries. In the framework of a research project funded by the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics we studied this issue and performed an experiment at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility to determine whether, under ideal conditions (parallel and monochromatic X-ray beam, high resolution detector), it was possible to obtain tomographic images of the inner ear with satisfactory resolution and contrast. This experiment can be considered as a "reference benchmark" for the CT imaging of the human ear, a target which a new CT scanner devoted to middle and inner ear should approach.

Come già avviene nel campo medico, anche per i Beni Culturali analisi diagnostiche sofisticate sono sempre più richieste da scienziati, restauratori, studiosi di storia dell'arte e, recentemente, dalla Polizia scientifica per scoprire falsi o verificare l'autenticità di reperti antichi.

Il presente articolo, inteso come continuazione di quello pubblicato nel febbraio 2007 in 21mo Secolo dagli stessi autori, vuole evidenziare il lavoro svolto e il contributo dell'Università di Bologna e dell'INFN nella TAC tridimensionale nel campo industriale e in quello per le opere d'arte di rilevante dimensione.

Nell’ambito delle ricerche svolte per ricostruire l’osteobiografia di Farinelli, riesumato alla Certosa di Bologna nel 2006 dal gruppo di ricerca dei laboratori di Bioarcheologia e Osteologia forense (Università di Bologna) e di Paleopatologia (Università di Pisa), si presentano i risultati delle analisi morfometriche, fotografiche, tomografiche e microtomografiche sullo scheletro facciale di Farinelli. Nonostante il pessimo stato di conservazione, esse hanno consentito di ricostruire in 3D la malocclusione di II classe da morso profondo (overbite accentuato), particolarmente interessante tenendo conto delle straordinarie qualità canore e sceniche di Farinelli. Si conservano 25 denti e gli incisivi e i canini inferiori presentano un’usura buccale molto marcata e inclinata vestibolarmente, che ha esposto la dentina cancellando lo smalto della corona. Poiché molte caratteristiche fisiche di Farinelli sono riconducibili alla castrazione subita in età prepuberale (Belcastro et al. 2010), la retrusione della mandibola potrebbe essere legata a disarmonia facciale dovuta ad una sua minore crescita rispetto al resto del cranio. Dal punto di vista biologico, la mandibola è meno soggetta agli effetti della mancanza di testosterone legata alla castrazione e la sua crescita non è paragonabile a quella di altri distretti corporei (Gullo, 2002). Diversi studi (Mumma e Keith, 1970; Mercier e Poitras, 1992; English et al., 2002) hanno segnalato che questo tipo di malocclusione ha anche effetto sulle attività masticatorie con conseguente ridotta capacità di sminuzzare il cibo rispetto a coloro che hanno un’occlusione normale. Questo comporterebbe disturbi gastrici e intestinali. Stando a queste indicazioni e alle notizie sul “mal di stomaco” del quale Farinelli soffriva cronicamente, (cfr. carteggio con il conte Sicinio Pepoli e con Pietro Metastasio) si potrebbe ipotizzare che una delle possibili cause di questo malessere, oltre agli elevati livelli di stress, potesse essere il tipo anomalo di occlusione.

Le indagini radiografiche, applicate ai beni culturali, sono di fondamentale importanza in quanto non distruttive. I raggi X attraversando la materia, grazie al loro alto potere penetrante, riescono a fornire un’immagine della struttura interna dell’oggetto investigato, ottenuta grazie alle diverse proprietà di assorbimento dei materiali ai raggi X. Nel 2010 tale tecnica viene adoperata per lo studio di un ciclo di quattordici dipinti su tavola, i ritratti degli Uomini Illustri. Le radiografie sono state effettuate in situ grazie all’utilizzo di un apparato sperimentale per la radiografia digitale appositamente realizzato. Il lavoro ha richiesto la progettazione e lo sviluppo di un sistema di acquisizione radiografico digitale pensato appositamente per lo studio di tavole lignee, che fosse facilmente trasportabile. Grazie all’utilizzo di tale sistema è stato possibile ottenere le immagini radiografiche ad alta risoluzione di tutti i quattordici dipinti completi, incrementando così le conoscenze relative a questa collezione di opere d’arte. Il sistema è stato poi modificato con l’impiego di un nuovo rivelatore flat-panel e sarà ulteriormente migliorato per quanto riguarda la parte di movimentazione rendendo la scansione completamente automatizzata.

La presente invenzione riguarda un metodo di calcolo parallelo e grafico su cluster, in particolare con ambiente di sviluppo Windows HPC. È stata trovata una metodologia per produrre un software che si basa sulle librerie parallele (MPI), in particolare ma non solo in ambiente Windows HPC, e che gira su cluster in maniera parallela ma con la visualizzazione di un’interfaccia grafica (menu per apertura/chiusura file e sequenze di immagini, elaborazioni e visualizzazioni grafiche, pulsanti e bottoni per l’interfaccia utente). Il programma viene lanciato in parallelo ma attende poi istruzioni dall’utente. È in grado di auto-adattarsi al numero di rank e nodi a disposizione ed è in grado di utilizzarli quando servono per il calcolo, di metterli in attesa quando non sono necessari e di monitorarne l’andamento quando sono in esecuzione. Il software sviluppato con questa metodologia è quindi in grado di effettuare la ricostruzione ad esempio di immagini tomografiche in parallelo e di mostrare i risultati grafici a video. Il metodo può essere applicato a qualsiasi software di elaborazione delle immagini di qualsiasi tipo (imaging medico, prove non distruttive per l’industria e i beni culturali).

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a well known diagnostic technique. However, it could be very complex if one wants to use it in fields other than medicine. When CT is applied to large objects, as in cultural heritage, several thousand digital images have to be elaborated, operation that takes a long time. As it is not possible to leave the measurement stage near a monument or in a museum for a long time, it is necessary to develop fast image reconstruction software to allow the experimenters to “look inside” the objects quickly in order to repeat the measurements, if necessary, in a more suitable condition before dismantling the equipment. The X-Ray Imaging Group (University of Bologna) has developed several systems for CT of large objects and, recently, a software, for fast image elaboration, that operates on a network of computers. For illustrating the power of our computing system, this presentation will discuss the CT (done in 2008) of a large Japanese wooden statue (over 200cm of height) of the XIII century, located at the royal palace “La Venaria Reale” (Turin). To investigate the entire statue volume, up to 36 scans were necessary and for each of them 720 radiographs were acquired. To reconstruct all the slices of the complete volume of the object (120 GB) it took 20 days of computing on a good standard PC. The parallelization work was done using the Microsoft (Redmond) HPC cluster and thereafter on a new, transportable, 32 cores cluster at the INFN of Bologna. The HPC environment has proven to be dramatically powerful and easy to use allowing to have the results very quickly. A superlinear speedup of 75 was reached with a 32 cores cluster (the speed up factor, 75, is higher than the number of cores, 32).

It represents a powerful non-destructive investigation technique, capable of displaying in a three-dimensional way the volume and the internal structure of the investigated objects, also thanks to modern 3D rendering techniques. This article presents the results of some diagnostic tests carried out by our research group, in collaboration with major restoration centers, using transportable tomographic systems developed by us. In particular it will deal with case studies that highlight the versatility and potential of computed tomography as a tool of knowledge in the field of artistic and cultural heritage.

Essa rappresenta infatti una potente tecnica di indagine non distruttiva, capace di visualizzare in maniera tridimensionale il volume e la struttura interna degli oggetti investigati. In questo articolo verranno presentati i risultati di alcune indagini diagnostiche realizzate dal nostro gruppo di ricerca, in collaborazione con importanti centri di restauro, utilizzando sistemi tomografici trasportabili da noi sviluppati. In particolare saranno trattati casi di studio in grado di evidenziare la versatilità e le potenzialità della tomografia come strumento conoscitivo nel campo del patrimonio artistico e culturale.

Europe has a particularly rich and diversified cultural heritage, the conservation of which is both urgent and challenging. For assessing the state of conservation of cultural monuments a reliable tool is needed which allows examining the surface but also the inner structure of objects. X-ray computed tomography (CT) which is widely used in medicine and industry permits to make 3D images of high quality. In order to make this technology suitable for the examination of cultural monuments advancements in different technologies are required: A lightweight linear accelerator which delivers hard X-rays, dedicated detectors, a versatile positioning and alignment system and special reconstruction algorithms which can handle limited data sets.

Wooden support: constituent materials, state of conservation, treatment of restoration and evaluation of their effectiveness.

Vengono descritti i risultati delle indagini tomografiche con raggi X condotte nel corso del 2008 su due sculture lignee giapponesi del XIII e del XVII secolo. L'indagine è stata effettuata in situ, presso il Centro di Conservazione e Restauro "La Venaria Reale" di Torino, con un apparato tomografico progettato per analisi di oggetti con dimensioni fino a circa due metri e mezzo.

A transportable Computed Tomography system for in situ investigations of different kinds of art objects has been developed by our research group at the Physics Department of the University of Bologna. This system has been recently used to perform CT investigations on several works of art under restoration at Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. We will present the results concerning two paintings on wood of very different size: the famous “Madonna del Cardellino” by Raffaello and the “Portrait of Lionello d’Este” by Pisanello.

Since the year 2000 the research group of Prof. Casali at the Department of Physics of the University of Bologna has worked on a method to extend the field of view of imaging detectors maintaining a high spatial resolution. A summary of the results and recent developments in using coherent fiber optics as a high resolution imaging detector will be shown.

The technique of High Dose Rate Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy (HDR-IORT) consists in the delivery of irradiation immediately following the removal of a cancerous mass, where the same incision is used to direct the radiation to the tumour bed. Given its particular characteristics, IORT requires dose measurements that are different from those requested in external radiotherapy treatments. The main reason lies in the fact that in this case a single high dose must be delivered to a target volume whose extension and depth will be determined directly during the operation. Because of this peculiar characteristics, until now there is not a dosimetric system able to detect the electron beam giving at once a realtime response and an extensive spatial measure of the absorbed dose. In this work we present the results obtained by using two orthogonal layers of a calorimetric phantom, the Dosiort, to measure the beam properties. We describe the main characteristics and some results of the Dosiort System, which is proposed within the framework of a research project of the INFN (Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics). The final set-up is a solid phantom of density approaching 1 g/cm 3 with sensitive layers of scintillating fibres at fixed positions in a calorimetric configuration for the containment of electrons of energy 4-12 MeV. The prototype will be able to define the physical and geometrical characteristics of the electron beam (energy, isotropy, homogeneity, etc) and to measure the parameters needed to select the energy, the intensity and the Monitor Units (MU) for the exposition: Percentage Depth Dose; Beam profiles; Isodose curves; Values of dose per MU. In this paper we report in particular the measurement of the read-out dynamic range and the first qualitative study of the results which can be extracted from the measurements taken with the XY double layer in a test beam.

In the framework of the INFN research, the authors realized a digital detector consisting of two orthogonal bundles of optical scintillating fibers associated with four photodiode arrays. This new system will be ablr to characterize completely an high energy electron beam in energy, intensity and spatial distribution.

In the framework of research projects partially funded by INFN, at the Physics Department of the University of Bologna, X-ray detection systems for high resolution Computed Tomography were realized.

Nell'ambito del Progetto Europeo DETECT è stato sviluppato un sistema per tomografie tridimensionali, ottimizzato per sorgenti di raggi X fino a 450 keV. Col sistema tomografico citato, attualmente in funzione presso il centro svizzero dell'EMPA e usato prevalentemente per applicazioni industriali, è stata effettuata una ricerca per individuare monete antiche di bronzo tra altri oggetti metallici. Le elevate caratteristiche del sistema hanno permesso di mettere in risalto dettagli molto interessanti delle monete, indicando come sia possibile fare un'indagine accurata di oggetti di interesse archeologico senza manometterli.

Due tavolette lignee dipinte, di proprietà della Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna ed attribuite a Gentile da Fabriano, sono state analizzate tramite diverse tecniche diagnostiche non invasive per ottenere una completa caratterizzazione del loro stato di conservazione ed ulteriori dettagli sulla tecnica realizzativa delle stesse, la struttura della parte lignea, la preparazione ed i pigmenti utilizzati.

Since the possibility of devising a treatment plan using a TPS (Treatment Planning System) is not available, it is necessary to know the physical and geometric characteristics of the beam. Defining the physical characteristics of the beam entails both measuring the delivered dose and defining (monitoring) procedures. In any case a much higher dose will be released than occurs with conventional external accelerators. The ionization chamber recommended by the standard protocols for radiotherapy cannot be used because of the ion recombination inside the gas. In this work we propose the use of a calorimetric phantom, the Dosiort, to measure the beam properties. We describe the main characteristics and some preliminary results of the Dosiort System, which is proposed within the framework of a research project of the INFN (Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics). The set-up is a solid phantom of density approaching 1 g/cc with sensitive layers of scintillating fibres at fixed a position in a calorimetric configuration for the containment of electrons of energy 4−12 MeV. La tomografia computerizzata con raggi X, più comunemente nota come TAC, è una delle più importanti tecniche diagnostiche non distruttive, che permette la visualizzazione tridimensionale della struttura interna degli oggetti investigati. Nata per applicazioni in campo medico, l’analisi tomografica si è ritagliata un ruolo di crescente importanza in altri ambiti, come quello industriale e più recentemente quello dei Beni Culturali. Per quanto riguarda in particolare il settore dei Beni Culturali, la TAC può essere di grande ausilio per conoscere la tecnica di costruzione o lo stato di conservazione di un manufatto ed impostare quindi un corretto restauro. Negli ultimi anni alcuni sistemi per radiografia digitale e tomografia computerizzata 3D sono stati sviluppati presso il Dipartimento di Fisica dell’Università di Bologna dal nostro gruppo di ricerca. Con questi sistemi di acquisizione sono state effettuate analisi su oggetti di dimensioni molto diverse, da pochi centimetri ad oltre 2 m. In particolare è degna di menzione l’indagine tomografica in situ sul grande globo terrestre (220 cm di diametro) costruito nel 1567 dal monaco domenicano Egnazio Danti e conservato nella Sala delle Carte Geografiche di Palazzo Vecchio a Firenze [4]. Dopo l’indagine sul globo il sistema utilizzato per le misure è stato trasferito a Bologna, presso un laboratorio dell’Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale e Fisica Cosmica del CNR di Bologna, dove alcuni componenti sono stati modificati al fine di renderli più facilmente trasportabili. Con la nuova configurazione il sistema è stato impiegato per l’analisi radiografica e tomografica del globo celeste di Vincenzo Coronelli, recentemente restaurato da uno degli autori. L’indagine con raggi X sul globo faentino aveva il fine di mettere in evidenza l’esatta geometria della struttura interna e verificarne anche lo stato di conservazione. Sfortunatamente il globo terrestre “gemello” è stato distrutto in un incendio causato da un bombardamento durante la II Guerra Mondiale, per cui un altro scopo della TAC sarà quello di produrre un modello per un’eventuale rifacimento del globo andato perduto. In realtà la tomografia doveva essere eseguita prima del restauro, proprio per esaminare le condizioni interne del globo, ma ciò non è stato possibile in quanto, dapprima la strumentazione si trovava a Firenze per l’indagine sul globo di Egnazio Danti e, successivamente, si è dovuto attendere che venissero apportate le modifiche a cui si è fatto cenno in precedenza. Si è deciso comunque di effettuare l’indagine anche a restauro completato, aggiungendo alla verifica dello stato conservativo interno anche quella dell’autenticità della sfera.
