In the construction of traditional composite bridges whose structure consists of plate girders, the concrete slabs of the decks are often casted before launching. These thin-walled webs are occasionally reinforced with longitudinal stiffeners to increase bending and shear strengths, and for bridges erected by incremental launching, these stiffeners also provide an enhancement for patch loading resistance. Experimental works have shown that ultimate resistance to patch loading is highly dependent on the size, relative position and shape of the longitudinal stiffener. Nonetheless, a comparison between those three factors should be carried out in order to establish the optimum configuration of longitudinal stiffening for webs under compressive forces. Hence, this study attempts to compare the increase of ultimate strength of a slender I-girder subjected to concentrated load using open and closed section types of stiffeners, evaluating three different stiffeners configurations: i) a single open section stiffener, ii) multiple open section stiffeners, and iii) a single closed section stiffener. The nonlinear computations were performed using a finite element analysis parametric model, where the relative position and size of the stiffeners are varied to cover a wide range of geometries.

Incremental launching is one of the common steel bridge assembly methods used nowadays, its practical application consists in passing the bridge assembly through the launching shoes as well as over each support pile. In some cases, when plate girders are used, it is usual to find longitudinal stiffeners reinforcement in order to prevent web local buckling produced by the vertical reaction acting in the support pile. A considerable number of studies have focused on evaluating the impact of a single stiffener on the resistance of plate girder subjected to patch loading. However, the effect of multiple longitudinal stiffened plate girders subjected to lengthy compressive load has received little attention. Therefore, this paper aims at studying the influence of load bearing length on the ultimate strength of multiple longitudinally stiffened webs subjected to compressive loads. Patch loading resistance is numerically calculated using a previously validated nonlinear finite element analysis. Subsequently, a parametrical study is conducted to investigate the effect of the aforementioned load length and the relative position and size of the stiffeners on the ultimate strength

This paper is aimed at studying the elastoplastic behavior of longitudinally stiffened girder webs subjected to patch loading and bending. The investigation is carried out by means of nonlinear finite element analysis to study the structural behavior of the girder components (flanges, web and stiffener) at ultimate limit state. Initial geometrical imperfections, plastic material behavior and large deflection effects are considered in the model. For the numerical model validation, the computer results from the simulations are compared with experimental results taken from the literature. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of the applied bending moment and the relative location of the stiffener on the ultimate strength to patch loading. Este artículo está enfocado en estudiar el comportamiento elastoplástico de vigas rigidizadas longitudinalmente en el alma y sujetas a combinaciones de carga concentrada y momento flector. La investigación se realiza mediante un análisis de elementos finitos no lineal para estudiar el comportamiento estructural de los diferentes componentes de la viga (aletas, alma y rigidizador) bajo el estado límite de carga. El modelo considera los efectos de imperfecciones geométricas iniciales, comportamiento plástico del material y grandes deflexiones. La validación del modelo numérico se hace mediante comparación directa de los resultados numéricos con valores experimentales disponibles en la literatura técnica. Finalmente, se realiza un estudio paramétrico con el objeto de investigar la influencia del momento flector y la localización del rigidizador en la resistencia última de la viga bajo cargas concentradas.

La precisión de los esquemas numéricos empleados para discretizar la ecuación de difusión, es de gran importancia en la asignación de la constante de difusividad que mejor representa la penetración de un solvente en un hidrogel. Se comparan los valores obtenidos para la difusividad de un solvente en un hidrogel, determinada mediante dos metodologías diferentes, desarrolladas utilizando esquemas basados en diferencias finitas y elementos finitos, basadas en la discretización de la ecuación de difusión que modela el proceso de penetración del solvente en el hidrogel, determinando, al mismo tiempo, el cambio de volumen del mismo. La aplicación se realiza en muestras de hidrogeles de Poliacrilamida. Las constantes de difusividad fueron obtenidas por ajuste de las predicciones numéricas con los resultados experimentales. Los resultados alcanzados permiten concluir que importantes variaciones en la constante de difusión, en una misma muestra, se obtuvieron dependiendo de la metodología numérica utilizada. En consecuencia, una revisión profunda de las metodologías utilizadas para estimar los distintos parámetros asociados con los modelos de difusión debe ser realizada. Adicionalmente, se analizó la poca influencia de las incertidumbres de las distintas variables en la estimación de la difusividad, los valores específicos de la relación radio/espesor que corresponden al proceso de hinchamiento más lento y el efecto de las variaciones en la concentración de equilibrio en la dinámica del hinchamiento. The accuracy of the numerical schemes used for discretizing the diffusion equation is of great importance for determining the value of the diffusivity constant that best represents the diffusion of a solvent in a hydrogel. In this paper we compare the values obtained for the diffusivity constant of a solvent in a hydrogel, by using two different methodologies based on finite difference and finite element schemes respectively. These methodologies consider the discretization of the diffusion equation to model the process of penetration of the solvent in the hydrogel, while modeling the volume change of the hydrogel. The specific application of both approaches is performed on cylindrical samples of polyacrylamide hydrogels. Diffusivity constants were determined by fitting the numerical predictions with experimental results. Numerical results show that huge differences in the values of diffusivity constant were obtained depending on the numerical method used, requiring, therefore, a thorough review of the methodologies used so far. Additionally, little influence of the uncertainty of parameters in diffusivity law was observed in the estimated diffusivity; specific values of the radius / thickness ratio corresponding to slower swelling process were calculated, and finally the effect of variations in the equilibrium concentration in swelling dynamics was determined.

La mayoría de los modelos de elementos finitos encontrados en la literatura asumen que el tejido óseo tiene un comportamiento isotrópico. Para simularlo con mayor exactitud, se plantea utilizar materiales transversalmente isotrópicos. En este estudio se comprueba la sensibilidad del modelo a las direcciones de las propiedades del material, la respuesta del modelo con tres materiales distintos, y la influencia de la dirección de la carga. Los resultados muestran que los sistemas de referencia locales convergen a las direcciones de los esfuerzos principales sin necesidad de iterar e independientemente de su posición inicial. El parámetro más sensible a la variación de la orientación de las propiedades es la deformación, y este comportamiento es independiente de la dirección de la carga. Most of the finite element models found in the literature assumes that the mechanical behavior of the bone tissue is isotropic. In order to produce more accurate models, this study proposes the incorporation of transversally isotropic material properties. An analysis of the model’s sensibility to the orientation of the material’s properties, using three different material types and three load cases is presented. The results show that the local reference systems converge to the principal stress directions in one step, and this behavior is independent of its initial orientation. The strain is the more sensitive parameter to the variation of the orientation of the material’s properties, and this behavior is independent of the direction of the load.

En la actualidad se buscan configuraciones estructurales, nuevas o ya existentes, livianas y resistentes que puedan absorber grandes cantidades de energía por deformación plástica. En este sentido las mallas de metal expandido se presentan como una alternativa. En este trabajo se estudia el comportamiento estructural de mallas de metal expandido sometidas a tracción. Las mallas de metal expandido se forman mediante un proceso de corte y estirado produciendo celdas en formas de diamante. Estas celdas se definen mediante los dos ejes del rombo. Este estudio se realiza en dos etapas: experimental, en la que se generan y ensayan probetas orientadas en diferentes direcciones con respecto al eje mayor; y numérica, donde se generan modelos computacionales que reproducen los ensayos experimentales. Los resultados numéricos se contrastan con los resultados experimentales. Se presentan curvas carga-desplazamiento para cada configuración, probando la notable influencia de la orientación del eje mayor de las celdas en la respuesta estructural de las mismas. Currently, there is a need for new structural configurations that are able to absorb large amounts of energy by plastic deformation. In this regard, expanded metal sheets are an alternative. In this paper, the structural behavior of expanded metal sheets subjected to tensile loading is investigated in depth. Expanded metal sheets are fabricated by a cutting and slitting process producing a diamond like cell. These cells are defined by two axes. This paper is conducted in two phases: the first one, generating and testing experimental models in different directions with respect to the major axis; and the second one, generating computational numerical models which reproduce the experimental tests. The numerical results were contrasted with the experimental results. Load-displacement curves for each configuration are presented, showing the significant influence of the major axis orientation in the structural response of the model.

En este trabajo se estudio la influencia del modelado de las condiciones de borde en el comportamiento de modelos de elementos finitos utilizados para la simulacion de ensayos mecanicos de dos tibias anteriores bovinas. Se utilizo tomografia computarizada para la reconstruccion geometrica y la asignacion de propiedades mecanicas, incluyendo la heterogeneidad y ortotropia caracteristicas del tejido oseo. Se realizaron ensayos de flexion en tres puntos y compresion a probetas elaboradas a partir de los huesos tomografiados, con la finalidad de validar las simulaciones. Se elaboraron mallas de elementos finitos de las probetas sobre las que se ensayaron distintas variantes de las condiciones de borde presentes en los ensayos mecanicos, con la finalidad de determinar los mejores parametros para el modelado de dichas condiciones. Se encontro que los mejores resultados se obtienen al imponer desplazamientos como condicion de borde de carga, y que las condiciones de borde de apoyo deben reproducir estrechamente las vinculaciones presentes en los ensayos mecanicos para lograr resultados correctos. Tambien se evidencio que los ensayos experimentales son una herramienta invaluable para la validacion y ajuste de las simulaciones con elementos finitos (EF). The aim of this work is to study the influence of different configurations of boundary conditions in the behavior of finite elements models built to simulate mechanical tests of two front bovine tibias. Computerized tomography was used to reconstruct the geometry and to assign mechanical properties which include the heterogeneity and orthotropy of the bone tissue. Three point bending and compression tests were performed to sample tests made from the bones in order to validate the simulations. The models of the sample tests were meshed and different boundary conditions were implemented to simulate the mechanical tests and optimize their applications. The best results were found when the load was applied through the imposition of displacements and when the support boundary conditions reproduced closely the links present in the mechanical tests. Also this study shows that experimental tests are an invaluable tool for the validation and adjustment of FE simulations.
