- Abstract

- Abstract
The question of why (or even when) the disadvantaged might be more or less supportive of existing social arrangements is a matter of debate amongst social and political psychologists (e.g., Passini, 2019; Jost, 2020, see also Rubin et al., 2022). Accordingly, for this Research Topic, we chose a title that was deliberately broad in scope, accommodating several aspects that included: (a) the drivers of system justification; (b) the socio-structural conditions that enhance or dampen system justification, (c) the ideological correlates of system support, and (d) the impact of system justification on wellbeing. Taken together, the contributions comprised in this Research Topic provide a comprehensive analysis of these four issues

- Abstract

- Abstract
The concept of homonegativity, which includes individual and societal stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against homosexual individuals, has been developed to advance the understanding of the particular form of discrimination faced by this population. However, current measurement instruments of homonegativity lack validity. To address this issue, Preuß and colleagues (2020) developed the Scenarios for measuring the Affective and Behavioral components of Attitudes toward lesbians and gay men Scale (SABA) in German. The present study concerns the French validation of this scale in Belgium. However, to obtain a larger sample and because of the relatively close context of these nations compared to Belgium, two other French-speaking countries were considered, namely France and Switzerland. Three hundred and seventy-four participants answered an online questionnaire which provided evidence of the reliability and validity of the French version of the scale, the SABAFR. The SABAFR could constitute a valuable tool for studying homonegativity in several countries and making meaningful comparisons, as well as for implementing controllable interventions.

21. How local stakeholders’ social representations shape the future of ageing in place: Insights from ‘health & care social innovations’ in Wallonia (Belgium)

- Abstract
This research attempts to study the social representations underlying health and care social innovations implemented in Wallonia, Belgium to shift ageing policies and management towards the ageing in place paradigm. A panel of 34 experts was interviewed to understand their representations using a Delphi-based methodology. The data were processed using thematic content analysis. The core of social representations of health and care social innovations (HCSI) was related to five key dimensions: D1, responding to unmet or emerging health and care needs; D2, defining (new) targets and beneficiaries of HCSI; D3, disrupting care practices; D4, mobilising a network of key actors; and D5, encouraging political recognition of HCSI to favour its viability and sustainability. Local stakeholders’ social representations tended to recognise only the goal-oriented dimensions in innovations and ignore process-oriented aspects. The blind spots for workers’ participation and empowerment may jeopardise their working conditions, causing a cascade effect on the quality of services and the care relationship. This affected how health and care organisations responded to innovation and might also compromise the long-term sustainability of ageing in place practices in Wallonia.

- Abstract
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). We consider possible causes and implications of these findings.

- Abstract
- Abstract
This research attempts to study the social representations underlying health and care social innovations (HCSI) implemented in Wallonia, Belgium to shift ageing policies and management towards the ageing in place paradigm. A panel of 34 experts was interviewed to understand their representations using a Delphi-based methodology. The data were processed using thematic content analysis. The core of social representations of health and care social innovations was related to five key dimensions: D1, responding to unmet or emerging health and care needs; D2, defining (new) targets and beneficiaries of HCSI; D3, disrupting care practices; D4, mobilising a network of key actors; and D5, encouraging political recognition of HCSI to favour its viability and sustainability. Local stakeholders' social representations tended to recognise only the goal-oriented dimensions in innovations and ignore process-oriented aspects. The blind spots for workers' participation and empowerment may jeopardise their working conditions, causing a cascade effect on the quality of services and the care relationship. This affected how health and care organisations responded to innovation and might also compromise the long-term sustainability of ageing in place practices in Wallonia., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in lessegalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in moreegalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N= 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index).

- Abstract

- Abstract
Introduction: Innovative programs that emerge in response to the rapidly changing care needs of older adults provide the opportunity to study transformations in working and employment conditions within the homecare sector. This study’s aim is to understand how innovations introduced in the homecare sector impacted the well-being of front-line workers providing non-medical domestic work for older adults who wish to age in place. Methods: Our study is based on a participatory approach involving homecare workers in two innovations in Wallonia (Belgium) that relate to flexible working hours, workers training, and technological equipment. We carried out a literature review, six semi-structured individual interviews with managers, and eight workshops based on the "Group Analysis Method" involving 9 to 12 homecare workers. Findings: The results revealed that the innovations deteriorated working conditions, intensified emergence of occupational psychosocial risk factors, and impacted work-life balance. Discussion: Tensions emerged and caused a negative impact on the well-being of workers and quality of care relationship with the beneficiaries and a weakening of the viability of the services. Workers proposed some avenues to improve and regulate these tensions.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

- Abstract
This thesis is the outcome of a doctoral project on using gender as an analytical lens to help understand women’s traumas and design context-specific psychological interventions. In particular, the project focused on traumas resulting from sexual and political violence and traumas associated with political conflicts, war and displacement in Egypt and Syria, in the context of the uprisings of 2011 and their aftermath. Based on a theoretical framework grounded in feminist psychology, the dissertation postulates that women’s interpersonal traumas are forms of systematic abuse anchored in patriarchal gender norms and shaped by the socio-cultural and political features of a specific context. The research is presented in five papers. The first study investigated the structure of prototypical femininities and masculinities in the two contexts of interest. In both cultures, two co-existing prototypes of femininity were identified: the Good Wife, and the Assertive Competent Woman, in addition to four co-existing prototypes of masculinity: the Family Man, the Macho Man, the Rebellious Man and the Soft and Tender Man. The second paper examined how the two identified femininity profiles relate to women’s exposure to sexual violence, abstract rumination, depression, and PTSD. The results point to marked differences in the way in which each femininity profile relates to sexual violence and the psychological consequences thereof, while showing different patterns of association among variables in each context. The third and fourth papers feature a quantitative analysis of the narratives of five Syrian and five Egyptian women, respectively, with a view to understanding modes of victimization and resistance in response to exposure to trauma, as well as the impact of possible changes in femininities and masculinities following the Arab uprisings. One key focus throughout both papers was how the context has contributed to the participants’ exposure to, perception of, and response to tr, (PSYE - Sciences psychologiques et de l'éducation) -- UCL, 2021

- Abstract
In the wake of growing inequalities, fatal law enforcement regimes, and aggressive immigration policies, questions have arisen as to why, for example: (a) the poor sometimes oppose the redistribution of wealth, (b) the disadvantaged are sometimes hostile to migrants who share a common cultural heritage, and (c) women voluntarily engage in traditional gender roles that are detrimental to their mental health and economic independence. Although several members of these disadvantaged communities have risen in protest against some of the ongoing socio-economic and political realities that disfavor them (e.g. Black Lives Matter and #Metoo movements), there is still a consistent portion of the population that remains silent. The focus of this Research Topic is to understand why some members of these communities accept or even enthusiastically support the status quo (the so-called “system justification” phenomenon). Despite the long tradition of research that has focused on disadvantaged people supporting social realities that are unfavorable to them, the reason for this tendency remains unclear. Some theoretical accounts have focused on individual-level motivations, such as uncertainty avoidance, cognitive dissonance, beliefs in a just world, system justification motivation, social dominance orientation, or the desire to maintain order/structure in one’s lives. Others have focused on group-based explanations, including an emphasis on hope for a future positive social identity, ingroup bias/interests, positive downward intergroup comparison, superordinate identification, social reality constraints, or image management. Finally, some have focused on societal level explanations, such as social representations. This Research Topic aims to provide a richer understanding of the “system justification” phenomenon amongst the disadvantaged by showcasing emerging work from the recent debates between scholars from different socio-psychological theoretical traditions. The emphasis is

Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB's distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

- Abstract
Innovative programs that emerge in response to the rapidly changing care needs of older adults provide an opportunity to study the transformations in working and employment conditions within the homecare sector. This study seeks to understand how innovations introduced in the homecare sector have affected the well-being of homecare workers providing non-medical domestic support to older adults who wish to age in place. Our study is based on a participatory approach involving homecare workers exposed to two innovations in Wallonia (Belgium) that relate to flexible working hours, worker training, and technological equipment. We conducted a literature review, six semi-structured individual interviews with managers, and eight workshops based on the 'Group Analysis Method' involving 9 to 12 homecare workers. The results revealed that the innovations deteriorated working conditions, intensified occupational psychosocial risk factors, and impacted work-life balance. This gave rise to tensions that ultimately had a negative impact on the well-being of workers and on the quality of their care relationship with older adults/caregivers, while also weakening the viability of the services. The workers proposed some avenues to improve and regulate these tensions., info:eu-repo/semantics/published
