Centrifugal pumps (CPs) are widely utilized in many different industries, and their operations are maintained by their reliable performance. CPs’ most common faults can be categorized as mechanical or flow-related faults: the first ones are often associated with damage at the impeller, while the second ones are associated with cavitation. It is possible to use computational algorithms to monitor both failures in CPs. In this study, two different problems in pumps, the defective impeller and cavitation, have been considered. When a CP is working in a faulty condition, it generates vibrations that can be measured using piezoelectric sensors. Collected data can be analyzed to extract time- and frequency-domain data. Interpreting the time-domain data showed that distinguishing the type of defect is not possible. However, indicators like kurtosis, skewness, mean, and variance can be used as input for the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithm to classify pump faults. This study presents a detailed discussion of the vibration-based method outcomes, emphasizing the benefits and drawbacks of the multi-layer perceptron method. The results show that the suggested algorithm can identify the occurrence of different faults and quantify their severity during pump operation in real time.

This study addresses the issue of predicting the distribution of lubricant flow through the outlets of a rotating shaft used in vehicle power transmission. A typical geometry with closely spaced rows of holes, suitable for the lubrication of multi-disk clutches, was considered. Both lumped parameter and computational fluid dynamics approaches were applied and compared. The test rig for model validation was designed with a variable speed shaft featuring an axial oil inlet and three equally spaced pairs of radial outlet holes. The main characteristic of the experimental facility is the possibility to selectively measure the flow rates through each outlet. It was found that the three-dimensional model based on the multiple reference frame approach provides a reliable prediction of how the flow rate is distributed. Generally, the flow rate is lower through the outlet closest to the inlet and is maximum at the farthest exit. The flow distribution is minimally affected by the shaft speed. The influence of geometric parameters on making the flow distribution more uniform was studied. It was found that a better flow balance is obtained with a low ratio between the diameter of the radial holes and that of the axial channel. The results obtained offer best-practice guidelines for accurately simulating comparable systems, in order to optimize reliability of the mechanical transmission and energy efficiency of the flow generation unit.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze evidence of intercultural competence across 22 lower secondary English-as-a-second-language and French-as-a-foreign-language classrooms in Norway based on video observations of naturally occurring instruction. We recorded minimum four consecutive lessons in each classroom across two school years, totaling 90 lessons. Research on intercultural competence in second and foreign language classrooms has involved analyses of curricula, textbooks, literary texts in class, and intervention studies, but few scholars have observed naturally occurring instruction. Even fewer studies have used video observations to compare language subjects. This study aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of how intercultural competence is addressed in English and French instruction and identifying similarities and differences between the two subjects. Using the model elaborated in the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) as an analytical lens, we found that the model’s area knowledge and critical understanding was most prominent in both subjects and that cultural stereotypes both occurred and were challenged by students across subjects. However, we found more, and more varied, evidence of intercultural competence in the English classrooms, where topics were studied in-depth, whereas the French classes often studied an array of topics more superficially.

In this study, the use of surfactant-free water-in-oil gelled emulsions containing benzyl alcohol (BAl/w) is proposed as an alternative to the more traditional use of organic solvents for removing varnishes. To mitigate the strong swelling and solvent action of benzyl alcohol and protect the paint and the underlying layers, temporary hydrophobization with cyclomethicone D5 has been proposed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of BAl/w surfactant-free, constructed with three different gelling agents of the aqueous dispersing phase (xanthan gum, agar-agar, and polyacrylate) on the surface of an oil painting varnished with and without preliminary saturation with D5. The role of pH, which can influence the ionization, and therefore the water solubility of terpene molecules and all other acid species present on the surface, was also studied. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies were used to characterize the pigments and the surface before and after varnish removal. Elemental analysis and any morphological changes were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The leaching efficiency of each surfactant-free emulsion applied on the paint surface was evaluated using a gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) analysis: the fatty acid content was established in each sample before and after the treatments.

Myo-inositol (MYO) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI) are the two most significant isomeric forms of inositol, playing a critical role in intracellular signaling. MYO is the most abundant form of inositol in nature; DCI is produced from MYO through epimerization by an insulin-dependent enzyme. Recently, it has been demonstrated that inositol may influence oocyte maturation and improve intracellular Ca2+ oscillation in the oocytes, and it has been proposed as a potential intervention for restoring spontaneous ovulation. The MYO concentration in human follicular fluid is considered a bioindicator of oocyte quality. In the ovary, DCI modulates the activity of aromatase, thus regulating androgen synthesis. Under physiological conditions, the MYO/DCI ratio is maintained at 40:1 in plasma. In women with PCOS, the MYO/DCI ratio is lowered to 0:2:1, contributing to elevated androgen production. By regulating FSH signaling, MYO administration increases the number of high-quality embryos available for transfer in poor responder patients. Finally, by acting downstream to insulin signaling, inositol administration during pregnancy may represent a novel strategy for counteracting gestational diabetes. These findings show that diet supplementation with inositol may be a promising strategy to address female infertility and sustain a healthy pregnancy.

Abstract The need for direct X-ray detection under high photon flux with moderate or high energies (30–100 keV range) has strongly increased with the rise of the 4th Generation Synchrotron Light Sources, characterised by extremely brilliant beamlines, and of other applications such as spectral computed tomography in medicine and non-destructive tests for industry. The novel Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) developed by Redlen Technologies can be considered the reference material for high-flux applications (HF-CZT). The enhanced charge transport properties of the holes allow the mitigation of the effects of radiation induced polarization phenomena, typically observed in standard CZT materials (LF-CZT) under high photon flux. However, standard LF-CZT electrical contacts led to inacceptable high dark leakage currents on HF-CZT devices. In this work, a detailed study on the characteristics of new optimized sputtered platinum electrical contacts on HF-CZT detectors is reported. The results from electrical and spectroscopic investigations, showed the best performances on HF-CZT detectors with platinum anode, coupled with both platinum or gold cathode. The morphology, structure, and composition of Pt/CZT contact have been analysed by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on microscopic lamellas obtained by Focused Ion Beam (FIB), highlighting the presence of CdTeO3 oxide at the metal semiconductor interface.

Abstract Background ALS is a heterogeneous disease in which different factors such as mitochondrial phenotypes act in combination with a genetic predisposition. This study addresses the question of whether homoplasmic (total mitochondrial genome of a sample is affected) and/or heteroplasmic mutations (wildtype and mutant mitochondrial DNA molecules coexist) might play a role in familial ALS. Blood was drawn from familial ALS patients with a possible maternal pattern of inheritance according to their pedigrees, which was compared to blood of ALS patients without maternal association as well as age-matched controls. In two cohorts, we analyzed the mitochondrial genome from whole blood or isolated white blood cells and platelets using a resequencing microarray (Affymetrix MitoChip v2.0) that is able to detect homoplasmic and heteroplasmic mitochondrial DNA mutations and allows the assessment of low-level heteroplasmy. Results We identified an increase in homoplasmic ND5 mutations, a subunit of respiratory chain complex I, in whole blood of ALS patients that allowed maternal inheritance. This effect was more pronounced in patients with bulbar onset. Heteroplasmic mutations were significantly increased in different mitochondrial genes in platelets of patients with possible maternal inheritance. No increase of low-level heteroplasmy was found in maternal ALS patients. Conclusion Our results indicate a contribution of homoplasmic ND5 mutations to maternally associated ALS with bulbar onset. Therefore, it might be conceivable that specific maternally transmitted rather than randomly acquired mitochondrial DNA mutations might contribute to the disease process. This stands in contrast with observations from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases showing an age-dependent accumulation of unspecific mutations in mitochondrial DNA.

In this study, a new and very quick method to depolymerize PET plastics is reported. The depolymerization experiments were conducted using a type-IV deep eutectic solvent containing ZnCl2 and urea, and a microwave oven as reactor. Different combinations of power and reaction times were employed while keeping the total energy constant. Successful conversions were obtained carrying out the process at 180 W for 2 min and 360 W for 1 min, whereas at higher powers and shorter times, an inclusion likely occurs of some solvent into the structure of the recovered PET flakes, as suggested by the porosity of the flakes, imaged by SEM microscopy. The flakes increase their crystalline character during the treatment, as indicated by the appearance of narrow diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns, at variance with the broad signals observed in the case of the pristine amorphous polymer. The NMR analysis of the supernatant liquid above the partially solubilized PET shows the presence of terephthalic acid peaks. The infrared spectra of the solid powder achieved upon the acidic treatment of the extract reveal the presence of C=O stretching peaks and the absence of typical CH2 wagging absorptions that satisfactorily comply with the presence of terephthalic acid.

This paper reports on the studies carried out on engraved inscriptions of the Deposition from the Cross by Benedetto Antelami (1150–1230), a relief sculpture conserved in the Cathedral of Parma (Italy). The inscriptions between the characters show residues of colored material in alternating red- and dark-colored stripes. The purpose of this specific investigation was to identify the materials (pigments and organic binders) used for the polychromy that are still present on the relief sculpture. Seven microsamples were taken to carry out laboratory analyses. In red-colored letters, mercury, and sulfur, constituents of the cinnabar (or vermilion) pigment were easily identified by SEM-EDS. This result is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. In the dark letters, carbon, iron, and lead are observed. The presence of materials containing metals is compatible with a mastic encrustation technique. FT-IR, Raman, and XRD techniques clearly detect beeswax, which was probably used as a polishing material. Amino acids and lipids that are typical of eggs have been identified by means of GC-MS investigations, suggesting their use as organic components of the mastic encrustation.

Abstract Background The risk for symptomatic COVID-19 requiring hospitalization is higher in the older population. The course of the disease in hospitalised older patients may show significant variation, from mild to severe illness, ultimately leading to death in the most critical cases. The analysis of circulating biomolecules involved in mechanisms of inflammation, cell damage and innate immunity could lead to identify new biomarkers of COVID-19 severity, aimed to improve the clinical management of subjects at higher risk of severe outcomes. In a cohort of COVID-19 geriatric patients (n= 156) who required hospitalization we analysed, on-admission, a series of circulating biomarkers related to neutrophil activation (neutrophil elastase, LL-37), macrophage activation (sCD163) and cell damage (nuclear cfDNA, mithocondrial cfDNA and nuclear cfDNA integrity). The above reported biomarkers were tested for their association with in-hospital mortality and with clinical, inflammatory and routine hematological parameters. Aim of the study was to unravel prognostic parameters for risk stratification of COVID-19 patients. Results Lower n-cfDNA integrity, higher neutrophil elastase and higher sCD163 levels were significantly associated with an increased risk of in-hospital decease. Median (IQR) values observed in discharged vs. deceased patients were: 0.50 (0.30-0.72) vs. 0.33 (0.22-0.62) for n-cfDNA integrity; 94.0 (47.7-154.0) ng/ml vs. 115.7 (84.2-212.7) ng/ml for neutrophil elastase; 614.0 (370.0-821.0) ng/ml vs. 787.0 (560.0-1304.0) ng/ml for sCD163. The analysis of survival curves in patients stratified for tertiles of each biomarker showed that patients with n-cfDNA integrity < 0.32 or sCD163 in the range 492-811 ng/ml had higher risk of in-hospital decease than, respectively, patients with higher n-cfDNA integrity or lower sCD163. These associations were further confirmed in multivariate models adjusted for age, sex and outcome-related clinical variables. In these models also high levels of neutrophil elastase (>150 ng/ml) appeared to be independent predictor of in-hospital death. An additional analysis of neutrophil elastase in patients stratified for n-cfDNA integrity levels was conducted to better describe the association of the studied parameters with the outcome. Conclusions On the whole, biomarkers of cell-free DNA integrity, neutrophil and macrophage activation might provide a valuable contribution to identify geriatric patients with high risk of COVID-19 in-hospital mortality.

(1) Background. The aim of this work is to combine non-invasive imaging with chemical characterization analyses to study original and restoration materials of a late 16th-century painting on a canvas representing the “Coronation of the Virgin with the Saints Ambrose and Jerome”, preserved in the Diocesan archive of Orte, a town in the district of Viterbo (Italy). The diagnostic campaign was addressed to support the restoration activities and the choice of the most suitable cleaning operations. (2) Methods. Both traditional analytical techniques and innovative multispectral imaging were applied to solve the diagnostic issues and best address the restoration of the painting. Specifically, hypercolorimetric multispectral imaging (HMI), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), optical microscopy, and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were combined to obtain information on the general conservation state of the artwork and the characterization of pigments, organic binders, and superimposed materials, these last being particularly important to identify ancient and not-documented restoration intervention, enabling the correct choice of the most suitable and effective cleaning intervention. (3) Results. Multispectral data allowed us to differentiate and map original materials through infrared and ultraviolet false color images and spectral reflectance-based similarity maps, suggesting pigment attribution and focusing point analysis for characterization. This approach was particularly successful to identify and locate the presence of unaltered smalt blue in the first painting coat, which had been covered with other pigments, and to suggest the use of organic dye in mixtures with cinnabar and ochres. Spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques enabled us to identify the painting palette and confirm the use of oil-based binder for the pigments and characterize the altered top layers, made with a natural resin and an animal glue. (4) Conclusions. The characterization of the artwork’s materials was essential to select the most suitable methods and materials for the bio-cleaning, based on bacteria, experimented with during the restoration activities.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the literary and televisual production of Carlo Lucarelli, highlighting in particular how his works interweave actual and fictional events at different levels. On one side, we will analyse the way through which the Italian criminal history and crime news enter in his novels and Tv series, taking into special account the fictional worlds of Inspector Coliandro, Inspector Grazia Negro and Police Commissioner De Luca. On the other, we will focus on how Lucarelli employs the conventions of the true crime docudrama in order to narrate and fictionalise criminal events that actually happened. This transmedia approach highlights a peculiar feature of Lucarelli’s crime fiction, that is a particular use of metalepses: the author exploits his own ‘figure’ to break the limit between realty and fiction.

This paper concerns the utilisation of a gas bladder hydraulic suppressor to mitigate oscillations in the delivery flow rate of positive displacement machines. The research focuses on two primary objectives: first, the experimental validation of the potential of this solution and second, the formulation of a one-dimensional fluid dynamic model for the suppressor. The foundational framework of the fluid dynamic model is based on the equations governing fluid motion with a one-dimensional approach. To accurately depict the fluid dynamics within the suppressor, a unique approach for determining the speed of sound was incorporated, and it implemented the instantaneous cross-sectional area and the inertial effect of the bladder. This paper is a development of a previous work to also investigate the positioning along the delivery pipe of the suppressor with respect to the pump. The study presents the performance of the suppressor and points out the effects of its relative position with respect to the pump that becomes particularly relevant at high speeds.

Self-cleaning and hydrophobic treatments based on TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles are widely applied for the preservation of cultural heritage materials, to improve their resilience in polluted environments. Excellent results have been obtained on stone materials, but experiments on painted stone surfaces, such as wall paintings and polychrome plasters used in historic buildings, are still limited. In this work, we present a study on the use of water dispersions of TiO2 nanoparticles obtained via sol-gel and organically modified silica (OrMoSil) for cleaning and protective purposes on Lecce stone, a carbonate stone, widely used for its excellent workability but easily attacked by atmospheric agents and pollutants. First, we evaluated the harmlessness of the treatment on Lecce stone through colorimetric tests, water absorption by capillarity and permeability to water vapor. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanoparticles was assessed by photo-degradation of methyl orange and methylene blue dyes. The dispersion was then applied on painted samples prepared according to ancient recipes to confirm the effectiveness of the cleaning. The proposed TiO2/OrMoSil-based coating can act as a self-cleaning and protective treatment on lithic surfaces to prevent degradation phenomena and preserve the original appearance of the monument.
