5. Static and dynamic crushing of sandwich tubes with composite skins and three plywood cores (poplar, birch, and oak).

Abstract

This paper presents the results of static and dynamic crushing of sandwich tubes with carbon or glass skins and different wood cores. Wood cores were made with poplar, birch, or oak veneer. The core thicknesses of the tubes were equal even if the thicknesses of the species veneers were different for availability reasons. For a tube with a birch core and carbon skins, the Specific Energy Absorption was 50.4 J/g in quasi-static tests and 66.6 J/g in dynamic, and the energy absorbed was 5427 J in quasi-static and 7025 J in dynamic. The birch layers were shown to make a very significant contribution although they were 40 times less expensive than carbon layers. Results from the research work described here show that these materials are appropriate candidates for energy absorption at low carbon emission and with renewable materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work focuses on the effect of wrinkle defects within curved laminate composites under compressive load. In the study, 22 curved specimens with different levels of maximum misalignment angles – ranging from 1.5° to 17° – were manufactured. The specimens with embedded defects were tested under compression to assess the effect of defects on the compressive strength. Then, specimens were modeled using the Discrete Ply Model strategy and simulations were run. The numerical model showed a relevant correlation with the experimental results and was used to distinguish the influence of different failure mechanisms (matrix cracking, delamination and fiber failure) on the global failure of the specimen. Finally, a numerical sensitivity analysis of the compressive strength of curved specimens in relation with the misalignment angle was carried out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The design of light aircraft sandwich structures is driven by a local buckling phenomenon named “wrinkling” which can be the primary cause of failure of such structures. Structural tests using the VERTEX methodology were performed to access the wrinkling behaviour of 558x536 mm2 technological sandwich specimens representative of the design used in light aviation. The operating principle of the VERTEX machine is the use of four hydraulic actuators to load a rectangular box structure, the upper part of the central box being closed by the sandwich under test. Thus, sandwich specimens were tested under compressive and shear loading. A wrinkling scenario was identified thanks to Stereo Digital Image Correlation and a high-speed camera. Wrinkling localisation is driven by mechanical and geometrical aspects. Experiments on wrinkling in sandwich panels remain rare in the literature at this level of the test pyramid for certification of aeronautical structures. This upper scale presents some advantages as it allows multiaxial loading and boundary conditions consistent with a lightweight aeronautical structure. Technological elements can also be added to study their influence on the structure. The result will lead to interesting future investigations on the dialogue between experiments and models in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract

International audience; An experimental study has been carried out to describe the evolution of the failure load relative to the maximum misalignment angle of curved carbon–epoxy laminates with out-of-plane wrinkle defects for a large range of misalignments. L-angle specimens with different levels of fibre wrinkling were manufactured and tested in four-point bending tests. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and infrared thermography were used to monitor the tests. They allowed the stress concentrations induced by the wrinkles to be identified, together with their influences on the failure load of the sample. In most cases, increases in wrinkling levels led to decreases in failure loads.

Abstract

International audience; During manufacturing, composite laminated parts undergo process-induced stresses and frequently exhibit some deformations at the end of cure. Among the different sources inducing these stresses and deformations, our work focusses upon tool/part interaction and more especially on the effects of bagging products. A series of cross-ply and angle-ply laminates were autoclave-cured on aluminium flat mould. Liquid release agent, ETFE release film and peelply were placed between the laminates bottom face and the mould. The deflection of all laminates was measured at the end of cure and numerical simulations were performed by FEM (Abaqus) for comparison. These numerical simulations propose an original modelling enabling the behaviour of releasing film and peel-ply to be taken into consideration. It reveals that crossply laminates are sensitive to presence of peel-ply layer while angle-ply laminates are less. In this case, the thermal behaviour of releasing film and peel-ply need to be investigated by thermomechanical analysis.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the results of static and dynamic crushing of wood sandwich tubes made with a birch core and carbon woven skins. 3 tubes (external diameter 64 mm, length 120 mm) were crushed in static and 3 others in dynamic under a drop tower. The results reveal very interesting energy absorption performance of such structures. The Specific Energy Absorption is 50.4 J/g in static and 66.6 J/g in dynamic, the energy absorbed is 5427 J in static and 7045 J in dynamic (170 kg launched at 4.2 m). These characteristics, which are quite comparable with those of tubes made of composite materials or aluminum alloys, show that these sandwiches with birch core are serious candidates for energy absorption with renewable materials.

Abstract

International audience; The development and certification of aeronautical composite structures is still largely based on the pyramid of tests. This approach requires a large number of tests going from the coupon to the full-size aircraft. To reduce the associated costs, predictive modelling methodologies are developed in several research centers [1]-[4]. Out of plane stresses emanating from impacts are well known to be critical for the residual compressive strength of laminated composites. To design composites structures, engineers use a damage tolerance approach following standards of low velocity impact and compression after impact tests [1], [2]. These standardized tests do not represent real structural loadings because of their conservative uniaxial boundary conditions that do not allow post-buckling failures. In this work, medium-scaled specimens are impacted at medium velocities with a gas launcher then multi-axially loaded in order to analyze interactions between impact damage and postbuckling.

Abstract

The article presents the results of dynamic crushing of sandwich tubes that had skins made of carbon or glass fibers – with epoxy resin – and an I214 poplar ply core. By increasing the number of poplar plies from two to six, the absorbed energy is doubled, showing the significant contribution of the wood. The Specific Energy Absorption of sandwiches with carbon fiber skins oscillated between 49.4 J/g and 60 J/g while that with glass fiber skins varied from 35.4 to 43.3 J/g. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Out-of-plane deformation generally develops for laminate composites during autoclave processing due to unbalanced residual stress in the stacking [1-4]. This can lead to undesired shape and poor dimensional control in part manufactured. This paper presents a study on out-of-plane deflection of symmetrical flat laminate composites. The effect of stacking sequences and tool surface conditions were taken into account. Firstly, the unidirectional prepreg M21EV/IMA was chosen as a raw material for composite manufacturing, aluminum was selected for a mold material in order to maximize the coefficient of thermal expansion of mold. Freekote release agent, PTFE release film and peel ply were used to modify tool surface condition. Afterward, the specimens with an overall size 250x250 mm2 and different layups cross-ply ([0/90]s) and angle-ply ([45/-45/45/-45]) were manufactured. Tool surface was classified into four conditions: 1) Freekote and one layer release film, 2) Freekote and one layer peel ply, 3) Freekote and two layers release film, 4) Freekote and three layers release film. In addition, four specimens were manufactured for each configuration of tool surface, thus, 16 specimens of cross-ply and angle-ply were done. Other process parameters such as mold material, curing temperature profile and autoclave pressure are identical. Digital image correlation (DIC) and laser displacement sensor were utilized to measure the out-of-plane deflection of all specimens in order to ensure the accuracy of measurement by comparison of both methods. Technically, the DIC can assist to examine the behavior of warpage and to indicate maximum and minimum values for magnitude of deformation while laser displacement sensor is supportive to search for the maximum deformation by measuring 17 points on each specimen. The correlation for both measurement methods is in good agreement. It can be clearly seen that the effect of stacking layup plays an important role for the out of plane deflection in term of shape and magnitude. Angle-ply laminates show much higher deformation than cross-ply laminates, twist shape was observed for angle-ply while cylindrical and rotated cylindrical shape were observed for cross-ply. In term of tool surface effect, the difference of tool surface conditions has no significant effect for angle-ply laminates while the use of peel ply provides a little higher deflection for cross-ply laminates compared to the use of one, two and three layers release film. Moreover, the difference in deformation behavior when using peel ply and release film can be clearly observed for cross-ply laminates.

Abstract

International audience; Wood was the primary material in aviation until World War II [1]. We can mention the famous Mosquito nicknamed "the Wooden Wonder". Its structure is made up of sandwich panels with skins formed from birch plies and a balsa core. It was manufactured in 7781 samples, with a "one shot" half-fuselage production and could reach 612 km/h. Until the 1990s, the Mudry CAP10 acrobatic aircraft was made entirely of wood. There is also a recent version of this aircraft with a carbon wing spar known as the CAP10BK. Today, the Aura Aviation company [2] is once again offering a French wood carbon aerobatic aircraft. In the automotive sector, only the English Morgan offers cars with an ash superstructure but an aluminum chassis. At Le Mans 1967, the Costin-Nathan has a plywood wooden frame, the doors are in fiberglass and it weighs only 410 kg [3]. This brief and non-exhaustive historical reminder questions the intrinsic capacities of wood, especially if it is combined with current materials. This is why the members of the ICA started working on the subject in 2014. The studies focused on the manufacturing methodologies and the static response of plywood-based sandwiches with skins made of glass fibers, carbon fibers, flax fibers or aluminum [4]. These sandwiches were then subjected to impacts [5] and their compressive strength after impact was analyzed [6]. A first attempt of modeling was also carried out [7] and above all showed that the problem requires a lot of investigation. The very good compression characteristics observed convinced us to launch a second thesis still in progress on the crash. This area is particularly important because automobiles are sized according to the HIC (Head Injury Criteria), a criterion which establishes the maximum deceleration that a human being can withstand during a collision without having irreversible consequences. A first publication was recently accepted [8] which shows that poplar (one of the lightest temperate woods, very present in France and affordable) has an SEA (Specific Energy Absorption) of between 20 and 30 KJ / kg while the carbon is between 30 and 80 kJ / kg, while poplar veneers cost 40 times less. Tests with other species (oak, walnut, etc.) and with a carbon / poplar mix will also be presented

Abstract

International audience; The development and certification of aeronautical composite structures is still largely based on the pyramid of tests. This approach requires a large number of tests going from the coupon to the full-size aircraft. To reduce the associated costs, predictive modelling methodologies are developed in several research centers [1]-[4]. Out of plane stresses emanating from impacts are well known to be critical for the residual compressive strength of laminated composites. To design composites structures, engineers use a damage tolerance approach following standards of low velocity impact and compression after impact tests [1], [2]. These standardized tests do not represent real structural loadings because of their conservative uniaxial boundary conditions that do not allow post-buckling failures. In this work, medium-scaled specimens are impacted at medium velocities with a gas launcher then multi-axially loaded in order to analyze interactions between impact damage and postbuckling.
