Abstract

Since the 17th century, the Tonnarella of Camogli, a small tuna trap, has been used to catch pelagic fish along the western coast of the Portofino Promontory ( Ligurian Sea, Northwestern Mediterranean). The availability of long-term datasets on fish yields (1950-1974 and 1996-2011), with information related to the seawater temperatures and the North Atlantic Oscillation ( NAO), has allowed us to study the qualitative and quantitative changes in fish yields in the last decade and the possible relationships with the seasonal anomalies of temperature that have occurred in the Ligurian Sea. In 1950-1974, yields remained relatively constant over time (average of 35.6 ± 8.7 t·year−1). From 1996 through 2011, yields were high (42.9 ± 15.9 t·year−1) but inconsistent with strong annual variability in catches. The primary catches are Seriola dumerili, Auxis rochei, Trachurus spp. and Sarda sarda. Changes in species composition have occurred as well: S. dumerili, Sardinella sp. and Belone belone have appeared recently. Moreover, a significant decrease in the boreal scombroid ( Scomber scombrus) and an increase of warm-temperate carangids and other typically Southern Mediterranean species such as Coryphaena hippurus and Sphyraena viridensis, appear to be linked to the warming of the surface water layer, particularly evident in the Ligurian Sea, for the last 10 years. The analysis of this kind of trend may be a powerful tool for assessing structural changes of the pelagic fish community in the Ligurian Sea ( Northwestern Mediterranean). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research is part of the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) project, a network of terrestrial, freshwater, transitional water and marine sites, on which ecological research is conducted on a multi-decade scale. LTER studies ecosystems, their dynamics and evolution, the relationships between biodiversity and ecological functionality, water quality, productivity, the role of resource availability, the effects of pollution and climate change. The research focuses on the study of the variability of zooplankton groups in the Portofino marine protected area, in Punta Faro. The samplings were carried out in the years 2018–2019, and the results were compared with the values of the years 2003–2005, interesting from a meteorological climatic and biological point of view. The plankton community of the Punta Faro system was analyzed by means of a modeling approach to obtain information on the functionality and health status of the system and to verify whether this has undergone any alterations in the last decade. The analyses carried out show a clear difference between the three-year period 2003–2005 and the two-year period 2018–2019, highlighting how environmental changes, such as the increase in temperature, have led to higher costs of system functioning in the last two years. Abstract

The Antarctic continent plays a fundamental role in the global climate system and its role is particularly important in a climate change scenario. Since the '90s, the Ross Sea and the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay have been chosen as specific and peculiar research sites for climatic investigations within the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) network. Studies have been conducted by both Italian and international Universities and research centres.This macro-site area is characterized by abundant primary productivity, and zooplankton and benthonic communities. The objective of the research activities is the acquisition of long-term time series related to the biotic communities, the bio-geochemical fluxes and the physico-chemical parameters of the water column in the Ross Sea area. To this aim, four Moorings (A, B, D and H) were deployed to obtain the above-mentioned data, which will be very useful to improve the quality of the existing bio-geochemical models and to provide more precise information on the Antarctic marine ecosystem in relation to global climate change. In the Terra Nova Bay research site, the activities are devoted to the characterization of the relationship between the structure and the dynamic of the pelagic and benthonic communities and the ice cover. Numerous physical, chemical and biological data were collected from the four Moorings, the water samples retrieved at the Terra Nova Bay site and the sediments samples. Such fundamental data allowed establishing an important starting point to better understand the climate change phenomena occurred in the last twenty years, and that will occur in the future, in the Ross Sea Area.

The Promontory of Portofino is placed in a particularly anthropized coastal context, characterized by multiple activities (nautical tourism, diving, bathing, fishing). Since 2005, the Marine Protected Area has been a SPAMI (Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest), RAC/SPA of UNEP. The Eastern Ligurian Sea site includes the Porto Venere Regional Nature Park and the Cinque Terre National Park alongside areas with an industrial footprint and a strong environmental impact (port of La Spezia, shipbuilding, fishing, aquaculture).
