Abstract

We have developed terahertz frequency quantum cascade lasers that exploit a double-periodicity distributed feedback grating to control the emission frequency and the output beam direction independently. The spatial refractive index modulation of the gratings necessary to provide optical feedback at a fixed frequency and, simultaneously, a far-field emission pattern centered at controlled angles, was designed through use of an appropriate wavevector scattering model. Single mode THz emission at angles tuned by design between 0{\deg} and 50{\deg} was realized, leading to an original phase-matching approach, lithographically independent, for highly collimated THz QCLs.

Abstract

We report the observation of transverse electric polarized electroluminescence from InAs/AlInAs quantum dash quantum cascade structures up to room temperature. The emission is attributed to the electric field confined along the shortest lateral dimension of the dashes, as confirmed by its dependence on crystallographic orientation both in absorption measurements on a dedicated sample and from electroluminescence itself. From the absorption we estimate a dipole moment for the observed transition of =1.7 nm. The electroluminescence is peaked at around 110 meV and increases with applied bias. Its temperature dependence shows a decrease at higher temperatures limited by optical phonon emission., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

A semiconductor-based terahertz-detector strategy, exploiting a bound-to-bound-to-continuum architecture, is presented and investigated. In particular, a ladder of equidistant energy levels is employed, whose step is tuned to the desired detection frequency and allows for sequential multi-photon absorption. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed multi-subband scheme could represent a promising alternative to conventional quantum-well infrared photodetectors in the terahertz spectral region., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physics

Abstract

We present modeling and simulation of prototypical multi bound state quantum well infrared photodetectors and show that such a detection design may overcome the problems arising when the operation frequency is pushed down into the far infrared spectral region. In particular, after a simplified analysis on a parabolic-potential design, we propose a fully three-dimensional model based on a finite difference solution of the Boltzmann transport equation for realistic potential profiles. The performances of the proposed simulated devices are encouraging and support the idea that such design strategy may face the well-known dark-current problem., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures; submitted to Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

IMMT gene codes for mitofilin, a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that regulates the morphology of mitochondrial cristae. The phenotype associated with mutations in this gene has not been yet established, but functional studies carried out show that its loss causes a mitochondrial alteration, both in the morphology of the mitochondrial crests and in their function. We present two cousins from an extended highly consanguineous family with developmental encephalopathy, hypotonia, nystagmus due to optic neuropathy. The likely pathogenic homozygous c.895A>G (p.Lys299Glu) variant in the IMMT gene co-segregates with the disease and associates altered mitochondrial cristae observed by electron microscopy.

Abstract

La metahemoglobina es una forma oxidada de la hemoglobinaque en un valor mayor a 1% en adultos y a 2% en lactantes, que genera anemia funcional e hipoxia tisular. Puede ser adquirida o congénita. La forma adquirida es más frecuente y suele ocurrir cuando se sobrepasa los mecanismos reductores de protección. El azul de metileno es el antídoto de primera elección. En caso de no contar con este, debe considerarse el uso de ácido ascórbico. La instauración de un tratamiento rápido y eficaz disminuye los efectos potencialmente fatales. Reportamos el caso de un paciente de 2 años que ingresa a la guardia pediátrica con cianosis generalizada refractaria a la oxigenoterapia. Methemoglobin is an oxidized form of hemoglobin that in a value greater than 1% in adults and 2% in infants generates functional anemia and tissue hypoxia. It can be acquired or congenital. The acquired form is more frequent and usually occurs when the protective reducing mechanisms are exceeded. Methylene blue is the first-line antidote. If such is not available, the use of ascorbic acid should be considered. Choosing a fast and effective treatment decreases the potentially fatal effects. We report the case of a 2-year-old patient who enters the pediatric ward with generalized cyanosis refractory to oxygen therapy.

43. Mutations in PMM2 gene in four unrelated Spanish families with polycystic kidney disease and hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia

Abstract

Objectives Hyperinsulinemic hypoglucemia (HH) is characterized by a dysregulation of insulin secretion from pancreatic ß cells. Congenital hyperinsulinism has been associated with specific genes in monogenic forms and also with other diseases with a yet unknown genetic cause. In 2017, Rubio Cabezas et al. described the association of HH and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) with a promoter mutation in the PMM2 gene. They found that all the patients carried a promoter mutation (c-167G>T) in PMM2, either homozygous or in trans with a second PMM2 coding mutation. Methods We performed the study of the PMM2 gene in six patients from four unrelated families, previously diagnosed with ARPKD and HH. Results All these patients had in common the heterozygous variant c-167G>T in the promoter region for PMM2. Additionally, each patient carried a compound heterozygote for a second missense mutation in this gene (p.Arg141His, p.Asp148Asn or p.Phe157Ser), previously reported as pathogenic for congenital disorder of glycosylation type Ia, with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. Unlike the previous published article, two of our patients showed altered type 1 pattern and one of them with rectal bleeding that could be a sign of PMM2-congenital disorders of glycosylation. Conclusion We propose the study of this gene when carrying out the diagnosis of patients with HH, especially in the neonatal period and when a recessive polycystic kidney disease without alterations in PKDH1 is diagnosed.

Abstract

In questo intervento si riflette attorno all’opportunità di studiare i rapporti stabiliti da Tasso con i testi della tradizione comica e sulla necessità di avvertire la vena ironica che talvolta affiora soprattutto nelle prose dell’autore. Dopo una serie di considerazioni di carattere complessivo, attraverso un percorso interno all’epistolario e ai «Dialoghi», viene offerto un breve approfondimento di tipo interpretativo attorno al primo Coro dell’«Aminta», svolto a partire dagli ipotesti comici in esso rintracciabili.

Abstract

Dopo una breve introduzione sulla tradizione misogina nella poesia italiana delle origini e del Rinascimento, il contributo si concentra in particolar modo su una tenzone in ottave fra Torquato Tasso e il cavaliere di Malta Antonio de’ Pazzi in lode e biasimo delle donne, alla quale viene accostato un contemporaneo poemetto misogino in ottava rima del fiorentino Giovan Battista Strozzi il Giovane. Vengono anzitutto scandagliati i contatti biografici e letterari fra i tre autori nelle città di Firenze e Roma, fra la corte medicea, il cenacolo del Cardinale Cinzio Aldobrandini, e l’Accademia dei Pastori Tiberini; quindi, proponendo una più bassa datazione per lo scambio di versi fra il Pazzi e il Tasso, si procede ad un’esegesi in parallelo dei tre testi. Chiude il contributo un’appendice volta a mettere in luce la comune amicizia dello Strozzi e del Pazzi, dopo la morte dell’autore della «Liberata», anche con Giovan Battista Marino, con cui i due poeti fiorentini intrattennero corrispondenze epistolari e poetiche
