In spite of the advent of extremely large telescopes in the UV/optical/NIR range, the current generation of 8-10m facilities is likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high-efficiency (>40%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R>20,000, although a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R ~ 7,000 is also planned. CUBES will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics, providing access to key lines of stellar spectra: a tremendous diversity of iron-peak and heavy elements, lighter elements (in particular Beryllium) and light-element molecules (CO, CN, OH), as well as Balmer lines and the Balmer jump (particularly important for young stellar objects). The UV range is also critical in extragalactic studies: the circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, the contribution of different types of sources to the cosmic UV background, the measurement of H2 and primordial Deuterium in a regime of relatively transparent intergalactic medium, and follow-up of explosive transients. The CUBES project completed a Phase A conceptual design in June 2021 and has now entered the Phase B dedicated to detailed design and construction. First science operations are planned for 2028. The 'First Stars' programme revealed the metal-poor halo star CS 31082-001 to be r-process and actinide rich, including the first measurement of a uranium abundance for an old star. To better characterise and understand such rare objects, we present the first abundance estimates of three elements (Be, V, Cu) for CS 31082-001 from analysis of its near-ultraviolet spectrum. Beryllium is rarely measured in giant stars, and we confirm that its abundance in this star is low due to the rather cool effective temperature that causes destruction of both Be and Li in its atmosphere. Vanadium and copper are iron-peak elements that are starting to be used as chemical-tagging indicators to investigate the origin of stellar populations. We find V and Cu abundances for CS 31082-001 that are comparable to other metal-poor stars, and present new chemical evolution models to investigate our results. In the case of V, extra nucleosynthesis due to interaction of neutrinos with matter is included in the models to be able to reproduce the measured abundance. Given the availability of high-quality spectroscopy of CS 31082-001, we also explore other atomic lines in the near-ultraviolet as a template for future studies of metal-poor stars with the planned CUBES instrument in development for the Very Large Telescope.

SPIRou is a near-infrared (nIR) spectropolarimeter / velocimeter proposed as a new-generation instrument for CFHT. SPIRou aims in particular at becoming world-leader on two forefront science topics, (i) the quest for habitable Earth-like planets around very- low-mass stars, and (ii) the study of low-mass star and planet formation in the presence of magnetic fields. In addition to these two main goals, SPIRou will be able to tackle many key programs, from weather patterns on brown dwarf to solar-system planet atmospheres, to dynamo processes in fully-convective bodies and planet habitability. The science programs that SPIRou proposes to tackle are forefront (identified as first priorities by most research agencies worldwide), ambitious (competitive and complementary with science programs carried out on much larger facilities, such as ALMA and JWST) and timely (ideally phased with complementary space missions like TESS and CHEOPS). SPIRou is designed to carry out its science mission with maximum efficiency and optimum precision. More specifically, SPIRou will be able to cover a very wide single-shot nIR spectral domain (0.98-2.35 \mu m) at a resolving power of 73.5K, providing unpolarized and polarized spectra of low-mass stars with a ~15% average throughput and a radial velocity (RV) precision of 1 m/s., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, conference proceedings of the French Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics meeting 2013

Photometric data in the UBV(RI)c system have been acquired for 80 solar analog stars for which we have previously derived highly precise atmospheric parameters Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] using high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra. UBV and (RI)c data for 46 and 76 of these stars, respectively, are published for the first time. Combining our data with those from the literature, colors in the UBV(RI)c system, with ~0.01 mag precision, are now available for 112 solar analogs. Multiple linear regression is used to derive the solar colors from these photometric data and the spectroscopically derived Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] values. To minimize the impact of systematic errors in the model-dependent atmospheric parameters, we use only the data for the ten stars that most closely resemble our Sun, i.e., the solar twins, and derive the following solar colors: (B-V)=0.653+/-0.005, (U-B)=0.166+/-0.022, (V-R)=0.352+/-0.007, and (V-I)=0.702+/-0.010. These colors are consistent, within the 1 sigma errors, with those derived using the entire sample of 112 solar analogs. We also derive the solar colors using the relation between spectral line-depth ratios and observed stellar colors, i.e., with a completely model-independent approach, and without restricting the analysis to solar twins. We find: (B-V)=0.653+/-0.003, (U-B)=0.158+/-0.009, (V-R)=0.356+/-0.003, and (V-I)=0.701+/-0.003, in excellent agreement with the model-dependent analysis., Comment: ApJ, in press

We present a cautionary study exploring the reliability of the H-delta line in the integrated spectra of galaxies for determining galaxy ages. Our database consists of the observed integrated spectra of ~120 early-type galaxies, of 7 metal-rich globular clusters in M31 and the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc, and of the open cluster M67. We have measured H-delta using index definitions designed to assess contamination from the CN molecule in and around H-delta by choosing combinations of bandpasses that both avoid and include a region of CN molecular lines redward of H-delta. We find systematic differences in the ages derived from H-delta measurements among the various definitions when extracting ages from H-delta in old stellar populations with enhanced CN bands due to non-solar abundance ratios. We propose that neighboring CN lines have a strong effect on pseudocontinuum and central bandpass levels. For stellar populations which have non-solar abundance ratios in C and/or N, population synthesis models that do not account for abundance ratio variations cannot reproduce accurately the CN 4216 \AA band, which leads to a corresponding inaccuracy in reproducing the various H-delta indices. Hence, caution must be used when extracting galaxy ages from the H-delta line in old stellar populations with significant non-solar abundance ratios., Comment: 8 figures, 2 tables

Protoplanetary nebulae typically present non-spherical envelopes. The origin of such geometry is still controversial. There are indications that it may be carried over from an earlier phase of stellar evolution, such as the AGB phase. But how early in the star's evolution does the non-spherical envelope appear? Li-rich giants show dusty circumstellar envelopes that can help answer that question. We study a sample of fourteen Li-rich giants using optical polarimetry in order to detect non-spherical envelopes around them. We used the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter to obtain optical linear polarization measurements in V band. Foreground polarization was estimated using the field stars in each CCD frame. After foreground polarization was removed, seven objects presented low intrinsic polarization (0.19 - 0.34)% and two (V859 Aql and GCSS 557) showed high intrinsic polarization values (0.87 - 1.16)%. This intrinsic polarization suggests that Li-rich giants present a non-spherical distribution of circumstellar dust. The intrinsic polarization level is probably related to the viewing angle of the envelope, with higher levels indicating objects viewed closer to edge-on. The correlation of the observed polarization with optical color excess gives additional support to the circumstellar origin of the intrinsic polarization in Li-rich giants. The intrinsic polarization correlates even better with the IRAS 25 microns far infrared emission. Analysis of spectral energy distributions for the sample show dust temperatures for the envelopes tend to be between 190 and 260 K. We suggest that dust scattering is indeed responsible for the optical intrinsic polarization in Li-rich giants. We have investigated a group of stars known to have low chromospheric ages, but high kinematical ages. Isochrone, chemical and lithium ages are estimated for them. The majority of stars in this group show lithium abundances much smaller than expected for their chromospheric ages, which is interpreted as an indication of their old age. Radial velocity measurements in the literature also show that they are not close binaries. The results suggest that they can be formed from the coalescence of short-period binaries. Coalescence rates, calculated taking into account several observational data and a maximum theoretical time scale for contact, in a short-period pair, predict a number of coalesced stars similar to what we have found in the solar neighbourhood., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in A&A
