Abstract

High quality stoichiometric magnetite (Fe3O4) films grown by infrared pulsed laser deposition (IR-PLD) on different surfaces were investigated in order to study the influence of the substrate, orientation, and thickness on their magnetic behavior. Different single crystal (001)-oriented substrates, i.e., SrTiO3(001), MgAl2O4(001) and MgO(001), have been used for the preparation of epitaxial Fe3O4(001) films. By comparison, polycrystalline magnetite films were obtained on both single crystal Al2O3(0001) and amorphous Si/SiO2 substrates. The thickness has been varied between 50 - 400 nm. All films consist of nanocrystalline stoichiometric magnetite with very small strain (<1\%) and present the Verwey transition (Tv) between 110-120 K, i.e., close to bulk magnetite (122 K). In general, Tv depends on both microstructure and thickness, increasing mainly as the thickness increases. Room temperature angular-dependent measurements reveal an in-plane fourfold symmetry magnetic behavior for all films grown on (001)-oriented surfaces, and with the easy axes lying along the Fe3O4 [010] and [100] directions. Remarkably, the fourfold magnetic symmetry shows up to 400 nm thick films. In turn, the films grown on single crystal Al2O3 (0001) and on amorphous Si/SiO2 surfaces display an isotropic magnetic behavior. Coercive field (Hc) depends on microstructure and film thickness. The largest (lowest) Hc value corresponds to the thinner film grown on a single crystal SrTiO3(001) (amorphous Si/SiO2) surface, which present the largest (lowest) strain (crystallinity). Moreover, the coercivity follows an inverse law with film thickness. Our results demonstrate that we can artificially control the magnetic behavior of stoichiometric IR-PLD grown Fe3O4 films by exploiting substrate-induced anisotropy and thickness-controlled coercivity, that might be relevant to incorporate magnetite in future spintronic devices.

Abstract

We have studied the magnetic properties and the composition of cobalt ferrite single crystal films on SrTiO3: Nb grown by infrared pulsed-laser deposition. Mössbauer spectra have been recorded from both the target used to grow the films and the films themselves. The Mössbauer spectra of the target taken at low temperatures show a strong dependence of the recoil free fraction of the octahedral sites with temperature. The films composition, with a coexistence of Co-enriched cobalt ferrite and magnetite, has been estimated assuming a similar ratio of the recoil free fractions of the films. X-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements confirm the valence composition of the film and show ferromagnetic Fe-Co coupling in the films with a coercive field around 0.5 T at room temperature. The combination of these characterization techniques allows establishing the coherent structural and magnetic properties of this biphase system.

The use of β 2-agonists, formoterol in particular, has proven to be very successful in the treatment of the syndrome in pre-clinical models. The object of the present research was to study the effects of a combination of formoterol and dantrolene, an inhibitor of the ryanodine receptor 1 (RyR1), on body weight loss and cachexia in tumour-bearing animals.Methods: Rats were separated into two groups: controls (C) and tumour bearing (TB). TB group was further subdivided into four groups: untreated (saline as a vehicle), treated with Formoterol (TF) (0,3 mg/kg body weight in saline, subcutaneous (s.c.), daily), treated with Dantrolene (TD) (5 mg/kg body weight in saline, subcutaneous (s.c.), daily), and double-treated treated (TFD) with Formoterol (0,3 mg/kg body weight, subcutaneous (s.c.), daily) and Dantrolene (5 mg/kg body weight, subcutaneous (s.c.), daily). 7 days after tumour transplantation, muscle weight, grip force, and total physical activity were specified in all experimental groups.Results: While formoterol had, as in previous studies, a very positive effect in reducing muscle weight loss, dantrolene had no effects, neither on skeletal muscle nor on any of the parameters studied. Finally, the combined treatment (formoterol and dantrolene) did not result in any significant benefit on the action of the β 2-agonist.Conclusion: It is concluded that, in the preclinical cachectic model used, no synergy exists between β 2-agonist treatment and the blockade of sarcoplasmic-calcium flow.Keywords: cancer cachexia, skeletal muscle, dantrolene, formoterol, calcium, ryanodine receptor 1

Abstract

This is the experimental dataset used in the paper Eur. Phys. Plus, 136:859 (2021) (http://hdl.handle.net/10261/248668). Historical glass-based objects undergo, since the time of their manufacture, different degradation phenomena that are related to their composition and to the environment to which they were exposed. Three-dimensional (3D) structural and chemical characterization of the degradation layers is important to select the most adequate conservation strategies for glass objects. Optical microscopy (OM) is the most frequently used non-destructive method to examine the surface of historical glasses; however, the 3D structural assessment of alteration layers requires applying the destructive modality of this technique to conduct a cross-sectional study. In this work, a different approach for structural and compositional characterization of alteration layers on model medieval-like glasses is presented, based on the combination of the laser spectroscopies of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and FT-Raman, and the emerging, cutting edge technique of nonlinear optical microscopy (NLOM) in the modality of multiphoton excitation fluorescence (MPEF). The results obtained through this multi-analytical photonic approach were compared with those retrieved by examination of the surface and cross sections of the samples by OM and scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). While the combination of LIBS, LIF and FT-Raman served to assess the composition of the various alteration layers, the use of MPEF microscopy allowed the non-destructive determination of the thicknesses of these layers, showing for both thickness and composition a good agreement with the OM and SEM–EDS results. Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in the world among women. The Spanish National Health System (SNHS) introduced population-based breast cancer screening in 2006. As in most European programs, risk is identified on the basis of age and a mammogram is offered every two years to women aged 50–69 years. Scientific evidence is moving toward personalized screening, based on individual risk. This article presents the clinical trials that will evaluate the efficacy of personalized screening and some studies carried out in our environment on the effect of informing women of the benefits and adverse effects of screening or the acceptability and feasibility of offering personalized screening, in the Shared Decision Making context. The Preventive Activities and Health Promotion Program can help transform screening in our SNHS.

Abstract

El cáncer de mama es la primera causa de muerte en el mundo entre las mujeres. El Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) introdujo el cribado poblacional de cáncer de mama en 1990. Como en la mayoría de los programas europeos, el riesgo se identifica con base en la edad y se ofrece una mamografía cada dos años a mujeres de 50 a 69 años. La evidencia científica está avanzando hacia un cribado personalizado, basado en el riesgo individual. En este artículo se presentan los ensayos clínicos que evaluarán la eficacia del cribado personalizado y algunos estudios realizados en nuestro entorno sobre el efecto de informar a las mujeres de los beneficios y efectos adversos del cribado o la aceptabilidad y viabilidad de ofrecer cribado personalizado, que incluya la toma de decisiones compartidas. El Programa de Actividades Preventivas y Promoción de la Salud puede ayudar a transformar el cribado en nuestro SNS.

Abstract

Paspalum fasciculatum Willd. ex Flüggé grows in mining soils which are Cd- and Pb-contaminated where it exhibits tolerance to Pb and the ability to extract Pb from these soils. To elucidate tolerance mechanisms to Pb-stress, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to quantify changes in the accumulation of proteins in leaves. We identified 323 proteins involved in primary metabolism and response to biotic or abiotic stresses. Although proteins involved in the processes of photosynthesis and saccharide and energy metabolism presented the greatest amount of down-regulated proteins, the plant was able to maintain photosynthetic functions and obtain energy to sustain the vital balance. P. fasciculatum based their tolerance on increased antioxidant defenses, improving the protection and repair of proteins and transduction signals to coordinate physiological response to Pb-stress. Our results provide important information to understand the tolerance mechanisms in P. fasciculatum and could be important in future molecular studies on the resistance and accumulation of Pb in plants.
