Statistical quality control techniques are crucial for manufacturing companies with tight tolerances but high-volume data generated from laser scanners has pushed the limits of traditional control charts. In a previous work, multivariate generalised likelihood ratio control (MGLR) chart was used to identify process shifts and locate defects on artefacts by converting 3D point cloud data to a 2D image. This paper presents a 3D MGLR control chart that retains the 3D nature of the point cloud data and uses a Fourier transform of the point errors. The average run length (ARL1) of the proposed 3D MGLR was tested using a designed experiment with ten replications and varying the number of past scans and number of Regions of Interest (ROIs). The designed experiment was repeated using three defects: incorrect surface curvature, surface scratch, and surface dent. The proposed methodology identified the dent while the prior methodology never identified it. In addition, the proposed methodology had a significantly shorter ARL1 than the prior methodology for the scratch and no significant difference in the ARL1 for the incorrect surface curvature. Biofuel, an efficient alternative to fossil fuels, has gained considerable attention as a potential source to satisfy energy demands. Biomass collection and distribution typically incur a significant portion of the biofuel production cost. Thus, it is imperative to design a biofuel supply chain network that not only aims to minimize the delivery cost, but also incorporates biomass quality properties that make this raw material so unique yet challenging. This article proposes a novel two-stage stochastic programming model that captures different time- and weather-dependent biomass quality parameters (e.g., the moisture content, ash content, and dry matter loss) and their impact on the overall supply chain design. To efficiently solve this optimization model, we propose a parallelized hybrid decomposition algorithm that combines the sample average approximation with an enhanced progressive hedging algorithm. The proposed mathematical model and solutions are validated with a real-life case study. The numerical experiments reveal that the biomass quality variability impacts the supply chain design by requiring additional depots, and therefore, it increases the capital investment. The storage of unprocessed biomass at depots and biorefineries decreased by 88.5% and 97.9%, respectively, and the densified biomass inventory at biorefineries increased 17-fold when baseline quality considerations were taken into account. Variability on the physical characteristics of feedstock has a relevant effect on the reactor's reliability and operating cost. Most of the models developed to optimize biomass supply chains have failed to quantify the effect of biomass quality and preprocessing operations required to meet biomass specifications on overall cost and performance. The Integrated Biomass Supply Analysis and Logistics (IBSAL) model estimates the harvesting, collection, transportation, and storage cost while considering the stochastic behavior of the field-to-biorefinery supply chain. This paper proposes an IBSAL-SimMOpt (Simulation-based Multi-Objective Optimization) method for optimizing the biomass quality and costs associated with the efforts needed to meet conversion technology specifications. The method is developed in two phases. For the first phase, a SimMOpt tool that interacts with the extended IBSAL is developed. For the second phase, the baseline IBSAL model is extended so that the cost for meeting and/or penalization for failing in meeting specifications are considered. The IBSAL-SimMOpt method is designed to optimize quality characteristics of biomass, cost related to activities intended to improve the quality of feedstock, and the penalization cost. A case study based on 1916 farms in Ontario, Canada is considered for testing the proposed method. In recent years, bioenergy has become a promising renewable energy source that can potentially reduce the greenhouse emissions and generate economic growth in rural areas. Gaining understanding and controlling biomass chemical composition contributes to an efficient biofuel generation. This paper presents a principal component analysis (PCA) that shows the influence and relevance of selected controllable factors over the chemical composition of switchgrass and, therefore, in the generation of biofuels. The study introduces the following factors: (1) storage days; (2) particle size; (3) wrap type; and (4) weight of the bale. Results show that all the aforementioned factors have an influence in the chemical composition. The number of days that bales have been stored was the most significant factor regarding changes in chemical components due to its effect over principal components 1 and 2 (PC1 and PC2, approximately 80% of the total variance). The storage days are followed by the particle size, the weight of the bale and the type of wrap utilized to enclose the bale. An increment in the number of days (from 75-150 days to 225 days) in storage decreases the percentage of carbohydrates by -1.03% while content of ash increases by 6.56%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Logging residues, which refer to the unused portions of trees cut during logging, are important sources of biomass for the emerging biofuel industry and are critical feedstocks for the first-type biofuel facilities (e.g., corn-ethanol facilities). Logging residues are under-utilized sources of biomass for energetic purposes. To support the scaling-up of the bioenergy industry, it is essential to design cost-effective biofuel supply chains that not only minimize costs, but also consider the biomass quality characteristics. The biomass quality is heavily dependent upon the moisture and the ash contents. Ignoring the biomass quality characteristics and its intrinsic costs may yield substantial economic losses that will only be discovered after operations at a biorefinery have begun. This paper proposes a novel bioenergy supply chain network design model that minimizes operational costs and includes the biomass quality-related costs. The proposed model is unique in the sense that it supports decisions where quality is not unrealistically assumed to be perfect. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is proven by assessing a case study in the state of Tennessee, USA. The results demonstrate that the ash and moisture contents of logging residues affect the performance of the supply chain (in monetary terms). Higher-than-target moisture and ash contents incur in additional quality-related costs. The quality-related costs in the optimal solution (with final ash content of 1% and final moisture of 50%) account for 27% of overall supply chain cost. In this paper we present two solution procedures to obtain the solution for a family of economic production quantity inventory models for an integrated vendor–buyer system considering that production system generates defective products, in which the number of shipments must be a discrete value and that the lot size can take continuous (case 1) or integer (case 2) values. These solution procedures provide a more realistic approach for solving a family of inventory models. Previous works only derive the optimal lot size considering the number of shipments as a given value or derive both the lot size and the number of shipments considering both decision variables as continuous. The number of shipments takes integer values in real life and thus it must be considered as a discrete variable. Bioenergy is a new source of energy that accounts for a substantial portion of the renewable energy production in many countries. The production of bioenergy is expected to increase due to its unique advantages, such as no harmful emissions and abundance. Supply-related problems are the main obstacles precluding the increase of use of biomass (which is bulky and has low energy density) to produce bioenergy. To overcome this challenge, large-scale optimization models are needed to be solved to enable decision makers to plan, design, and manage bioenergy supply chains. Therefore, the use of effective optimization approaches is of great importance. The traditional mathematical methods (such as linear, integer, and mixed-integer programming) frequently fail to find optimal solutions for non-convex and/or large-scale models whereas metaheuristics are efficient approaches for finding near-optimal solutions that use less computational resources. This paper presents a comprehensive review by studying and analyzing the application of metaheuristics to solve bioenergy supply chain models as well as the exclusive challenges of the mathematical problems applied in the bioenergy supply chain field. The reviewed metaheuristics include: (1) population approaches, such as ant colony optimization (ACO), the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and bee colony algorithm (BCA); and (2) trajectory approaches, such as the tabu search (TS) and simulated annealing (SA). Based on the outcomes of this literature review, the integrated design and planning of bioenergy supply chains problem has been solved primarily by implementing the GA. The production process optimization was addressed primarily by using both the GA and PSO. The supply chain network design problem was treated by utilizing the GA and ACO. The truck and task scheduling problem was solved using the SA and the TS, where the trajectory-based methods proved to outperform the population-based methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a review of the state of the art of the Wind Farm Design and Optimization (WFDO) problem. The WFDO problem refers to a set of advanced planning actions needed to extremize the performance of wind farms, which may be composed of a few individual Wind Turbines (WTs) up to thousands of WTs. The WFDO problem has been investigated in different scenarios, with substantial differences in main objectives, modelling assumptions, constraints, and numerical solution methods. The aim of this paper is: (1) to present an exhaustive survey of the literature covering the full span of the subject, an analysis of the state-of-the-art models describing the performance of wind farms as well as its extensions, and the numerical approaches used to solve the problem; (2) to provide an overview of the available knowledge and recent progress in the application of such strategies to real onshore and offshore wind farms; and (3) to propose a comprehensive agenda for future research.
