The well-posedness of a class of optimal control problems is analysed, where the state equation couples a nonlinear degenerate Fokker-Planck equation with a system of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). Such problems naturally arise as mean-field limits of Stochastic Differential models for multipopulation dynamics, where a large number of agents (followers) is steered through parsimonious intervention on a selected class of leaders. The proposed approach combines stability estimates for measure solutions of nonlinear degenerate Fokker-Planck equations with a general framework of assumptions on the cost functional, ensuring compactness and lower semicontinuity properties. The Lie structure of the state equations allows one for considering non-Lipschitz nonlinearities, provided some suitable dissipativity assumptions are considered in addition to non-Euclidean H\"{o}lder and sublinearity conditions.

We consider Dark Matter self-interactions mediated by ultralight scalars. We show that effectively massless mediators lead to an enhancement of the matter power spectrum, while heavier mediators lead to a suppression, together with a feature around their Jeans scale. We derive the strongest present constraints by combining Planck and BOSS data. The recent DESI measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations exhibit a mild preference for long-range self-interactions, as strong as 4 per mille of the gravitational coupling. At low redshift, it is possible to combine spectroscopic information of galaxies with their luminosity or angular diameter distance to directly measure the projection of peculiar velocities (PV) along the line-of-sight. A PV survey probing a large fraction of the sky is subject to so-called wide-angle effects, arising from the variation of the line-of-sight across the sky, and other sub-leading projection effects due to the propagation of the photons in a perturbed cosmological background. In this work, for the first time, we provide a complete description, within linear theory and General Relativity, of the power spectrum of luminosity distance fluctuations, clarifying its relation to the observables in a PV survey. We find that wide-angle effects will be detected at high significance by future observations and will have to be included in the cosmological analysis. We consider Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations with unbounded drift terms which are only measurable in time and locally H\"older continuous in space. We investigate the accuracy of the perturbative galaxy bias expansion in view of the forthcoming analysis of the Euclid spectroscopic galaxy samples. We compare the performance of an Eulerian galaxy bias expansion, using state-of-art prescriptions from the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFTofLSS), against a hybrid approach based on Lagrangian perturbation theory and high-resolution simulations. These models are benchmarked against comoving snapshots of the Flagship I N-body simulation at $z=(0.9,1.2,1.5,1.8)$, which have been populated with H$\alpha$ galaxies leading to catalogues of millions of objects within a volume of about $58\,h^{-3}\,{\rm Gpc}^3$. Our analysis suggests that both models can be used to provide a robust inference of the parameters $(h, \omega_{\rm c})$ in the redshift range under consideration, with comparable constraining power. We additionally determine the range of validity of the EFTofLSS model in terms of scale cuts and model degrees of freedom. From these tests, it emerges that the standard third-order Eulerian bias expansion can accurately describe the full shape of the real-space galaxy power spectrum up to the maximum wavenumber $k_{\rm max}=0.45\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, even with a measurement precision well below the percent level. In particular, this is true for a configuration with six free nuisance parameters, including local and non-local bias parameters, a matter counterterm, and a correction to the shot-noise contribution. Fixing either tidal bias parameters to physically-motivated relations still leads to unbiased cosmological constraints. We finally repeat our analysis assuming a volume that matches the expected footprint of Euclid, but without considering observational effects, as purity and completeness, showing that we can get consistent cosmological constraints over this range of scales and redshifts., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures

We present constraints on the amplitude of local Primordial Non-Gaussianities (PNG), $f_{\rm NL}$, using the quasar sample in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 16. We analyze the power spectrum monopole, testing for the presence of scale dependent galaxy bias induced by local PNG. Our analysis makes use of optimal redshift weights that maximize the response of the quasar sample to the possible presence of non zero PNG. We find $-4

Cosmology offers opportunities to test Dark Matter independently of its interactions with the Standard Model. We study the imprints of long-range forces acting solely in the dark sector on the distribution of galaxies, the so-called Large Scale Structure (LSS). We derive the strongest constraint on such forces from a combination of Planck and BOSS data. Along the way we consistently develop, for the first time, the Effective Field Theory of LSS in the presence of new dynamics in the dark sector. Gauge theories arise in physical systems displaying space-time local symmetries. They provide a powerful description of important realms of physics ranging from fundamental interactions, to statistical mechanics, condensed matter and more recently quantum computation. As such, a remarkably deep understanding has been achieved in the field. With the advent of quantum technology, lower energy analogs, capable to capture important features of the original quantum field theories through quantum simulation, have been intensively studied. Here, we propose a specific scheme implementing an analogic quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories constrained to mesoscopic spatial scales. To this end, we study the dynamics of mesons residing in a ring-shaped lattice of mesoscopic size pierced by an effective magnetic field. In particular, we find a new type of Aharonov-Bohm effect that goes beyond the particle-like effect and reflecting the the features of the confining gauge potential. The coherence properties of the meson are quantified by the persistent current and by specific features of the correlation functions. When the magnetic field is quenched, Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and correlations start a specific matter-wave current dynamics.

The large scale limit of the galaxy power spectrum provides a unique window into the early Universe through a possible detection of scale dependent bias produced by primordial non Gaussianities. On such large scales, relativistic effects could become important and be confused for a primordial signal. In this Letter we provide the first consistent estimate of such effects in the observed galaxy power spectrum, and discuss their possible degeneracy with local primordial non Gaussianities. We also clarify the physical differences between the two signatures, as revealed by their different sensitivity to the large scale gravitational potential. Our results indicate that, while relativistic effects could easily account for 10% of the observed power spectrum, the subset of those with a similar scale dependence to a primordial signal can be safely ignored for current galaxy surveys, but it will become relevant for future observational programs., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, code available on GitHub at https://github.com/foglienimatteo/GaPSE.jl. v2: minor modifications to match published version

Primordial non-Gaussianities (PNG) leave unique signatures in the bispectrum of the large-scale structure. With upcoming galaxy surveys set to improve PNG constraints by at least one order of magnitude, it is important to account for any potential contamination. In our work we show how to include wide-angle effects into the 3-dimensional observed galaxy bispectrum. We compute the leading wide-angle corrections to the monopole, finding that they could mimic local PNG with an amplitude of $f_{\rm NL} = \mathcal{O}\left( 0.1 \right)$. We also compute the dipole induced by wide-angle effects, whose amplitude is a few-percent of the flat-sky monopole. We estimate that wide-angle effects in the monopole can be safely neglected for survey volumes of the order of $8~\mathrm{Gpc}^3 h^{-3}$, while the dipole can start being detected from surveys probing volumes larger than $50~\mathrm{Gpc}^3 h^{-3}$. In this review we collect, for the first time in one paper, old and new results and future perspectives of the research line that uses hadron production, in high-energy scattering processes, to experimentally probe fundamental questions of quantum gravity. The key observations, that ignited the link between the two arenas, are the so-called ``color-event horizon'' of quantum chromodynamics, and the enormous (de)accelerations involved in such scattering processes: both phenomena point to the Unruh (and related Hawking) type of effects. After the first pioneering investigations of this, such research went on and on, including studies of the horizon entropy and other ``black-hole thermodynamical'' behaviors, which incidentally are also the frontier of the analog gravity research itself. It is stressed in various places here that the \textit{trait d'union} between the two phenomenologies is that in both scenarios, hadron physics and black hole physics, ``thermal'' behaviors are more easily understood not as due to real thermalization processes (sometimes just impossible, given the small number of particles involved), but rather to a stochastic/quantum entanglement nature of such temperature. Finally, other aspects, such as the self-critical organizations of hadronic matter and of black-holes, have been recently investigated. The results of those investigations are also summarized and commented upon here. As a general remark, this research line shows that indeed we can probe quantum gravity theoretical constructions with analog systems that are not confined to belong only to the condensed matter arena. We take the view that the area of a black hole's event horizon is quantized, $A = l_P^2 \, (4 \ln 2) \, N$, and the associated degrees of freedom are finite in number and of fermionic nature. We then investigate general aspects of the entropy, $S_{BH}$, our main focus being black-hole self-similarity. We first find a two-to-one map between the black hole's configurations and the ordered partitions of the integer $N$. Hence we construct from there a composition law between the sub-parts making the whole configuration space. This gives meaning to black hole self-similarity, entirely within a single description, as a phenomenon stemming from the well known self-similarity of the ordered partitions of $N$. Finally, we compare the above to the well-known results on the subleading (quantum) corrections, that necessarily require different (quantum) statistical weights for the various configurations., Comment: 8 pages, no figures

We initiate the exploration of the cosmology of dark fifth forces: new forces acting solely on Dark Matter. We focus on long range interactions which lead to an effective violation of the Equivalence Principle on cosmological scales today. At the microscopic level, the dark fifth force can be realized by a light scalar with mass smaller than the Hubble constant today ($\lesssim 10^{-33}\,\text{eV}$) coupled to Dark Matter. We study the behavior of the background cosmology and linear perturbations in such a Universe. At the background level, the new force modifies the evolution of the Dark Matter energy density and thus the Hubble flow. At linear order, it modifies the growth of matter perturbations and generates relative density and velocity perturbations between Dark Matter and baryons that grow over time. We derive constraints from current CMB and BAO data, bounding the strength of the dark fifth force to be less than a percent of gravity. These are the strongest constraints to date. We present potential implications of this scenario for the Hubble tension and discuss how our results are modified if the light scalar mediator accounts for the observed density of the Dark Energy. We analyze the problem of controlling a multi-agent system with additive white noise through parsimonious interventions on a selected subset of the agents (leaders). For such a controlled system with a SDE constraint, we introduce a rigorous limit process towards an infinite dimensional optimal control problem constrained by the coupling of a system of ODE for the leaders with a McKean-Vlasov-type SDE, governing the dynamics of the prototypical follower. The latter is, under some assumptions on the distribution of the initial data, equivalent with a (nonlinear parabolic) PDE-ODE system. The derivation of the limit mean-field optimal control problem is achieved by linking the mean-field limit of the governing equations together with the $\Gamma$-limit of the cost functionals for the finite dimensional problems.

Many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of new light species that may have been produced in the early universe. Prominent examples include axions, sterile neutrinos, gravitinos, dark photons, and more. The gravitational influence of light relics leaves imprints in the cosmic microwave background fluctuations, the large-scale structure of the universe and the primordial element abundances. In this paper, we detail the physics of cosmological light relics, and describe how measurements of their relic density and mass serve as probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. A measurement of the light relic density at the precision of upcoming cosmological surveys will point the way toward new physics or severely constrain the range of viable extensions to the Standard Model., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 59 pages, 12 figures

Cosmic inflation provides a window to the highest energy densities accessible in nature, far beyond those achievable in any realistic terrestrial experiment. Theoretical insights into the inflationary era and its observational probes may therefore shed unique light on the physical laws underlying our universe. This white paper describes our current theoretical understanding of the inflationary era, with a focus on the statistical properties of primordial fluctuations. In particular, we survey observational targets for three important signatures of inflation: primordial gravitational waves, primordial non-Gaussianity and primordial features. With the requisite advancements in analysis techniques, the tremendous increase in the raw sensitivities of upcoming and planned surveys will translate to leaps in our understanding of the inflationary paradigm and could open new frontiers for cosmology and particle physics. We present a method to perform the exact convolution of the model prediction for bispectrum multipoles in redshift space with the survey window function. We extend a widely applied method for the power spectrum convolution to the bispectrum, taking advantage of a 2D-FFTlog algorithm. As a preliminary test of its accuracy, we consider the toy model of a spherical window function in real space. This setup provides an analytical evaluation of the 3-point function of the window, and therefore it allows to isolate and quantify possible systematic errors of the method. We find that our implementation of the convolution in terms of a mixing matrix shows differences at the percent level in comparison to the measurements from a very large set of mock halo catalogs. It is also able to recover unbiased constraints on halo bias parameters in a likelihood analysis of a set of numerical simulations with a total volume of $100\, h^{-3} \, {\rm Gpc}^3$. We make a number of comments regarding modeling degeneracies in strong lensing measurements of the Hubble parameter $H_0$. The first point concerns the impact of weak lensing associated with different segments of the line of sight. We show that external convergence terms associated with the lens-source and observer-lens segments need to be included in cosmographic modeling, in addition to the usual observer-source term, to avoid systematic bias in the inferred value of $H_0$. Specifically, we show how an incomplete account of some line of sight terms biases stellar kinematics as well as ray tracing simulation methods to alleviate the mass sheet degeneracy. The second point concerns the use of imaging data for multiple strongly-lensed sources in a given system. We show that the mass sheet degeneracy is not fully resolved by the availability of multiple sources: some degeneracy remains because of differential external convergence between the different sources. Similarly, differential external convergence also complicates the use of multiple sources in addressing the approximate mass sheet degeneracy associated with a local ("internal") core component in lens galaxies. This internal-external degeneracy is amplified by the non-monotonicity of the angular diameter distance as a function of redshift. We derive an adaptation of Li & Yau estimates for positive solutions of semilinear heat equations on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci tensor. We then apply these estimates to obtain a Harnack inequality and to discuss monotonicity, convexity, decay estimates and triviality of ancient and eternal solutions.

Fermionic artificial matter realized with cold atoms grants access to an unprecedented degree of control on sophisticated many-body effects with an enhanced flexibility of the operating conditions. We consider three-component fermions with attractive interactions to study the formation of complex bound states whose nature goes beyond the standard fermion pairing occurring in quantum materials. Such systems display clear analogies with quark matter. Here, we address the nature of the bound states of a three-component fermionic system in a ring-shaped trap through the persistent current. In this way, we demonstrate that we can distinguish between color superfluid and trionic bound states. By analyzing finite temperature effects, we show how finite temperature can lead to the deconfinement of bound states. For weak interactions the deconfinement occurs because of scattering states. In this regime, the deconfinement depends on the trade-off between interactions and thermal fluctuations temperature. For strong interactions the features of the persistent current result from the properties of a suitable gas of bound states., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures

Line intensity mapping (LIM) is an emerging technique with a unique potential to probe a wide range of scales and redshifts. Realizing the full potential of LIM, however, relies on accurate modeling of the signal. We introduce an extended halo model for the power spectrum of intensity fluctuations of CO rotational lines and [CII] fine transition line in real space, modeling nonlinearities in matter fluctuations and biasing relation between the line intensity fluctuations and the underlying dark matter distribution. We also compute the stochastic contributions beyond the Poisson approximation using the halo model framework. To establish the accuracy of the model, we create the first cosmological-scale simulations of CO and [CII] intensity maps, \textsf{MithraLIMSims}, at redshifts $0.5 \leq z\leq6$, using halo catalogs from Hidden-Valley simulations, and painting halos according to mass-redshift-luminosity relations for each line. We show that at $z=1$ on scales $k_{\rm max} \lesssim 0.8 \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1}h$, the model predictions of clustering power (with only two free parameters) are in agreement with the measured power spectrum at better than 5\%. At higher redshift of $z=4.5$, this remarkable agreement extends to smaller scale of $ k_{\rm max} \lesssim 2 \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1}h$. Furthermore, we show that on large scales, the stochastic contributions to CO and CII power spectra are non-Poissonian, with amplitudes reproduced reasonably well by the halo model prescription. Lastly, we assess the performance of the theoretical model of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and show that hypothetical LIM surveys probing CO lines at $z=1$, that can be deployed within this decade, will be able to make a high significance measurement of the BAO. On a longer time scale, a space-based mission probing [CII] line can uniquely measure the BAO on a wide range of redshifts at an unprecedented precision., Comment: v3 matches the published article

Proteins perform critical processes in all living systems: converting solar energy into chemical energy, replicating DNA, as the basis of highly performant materials, sensing and much more. While an incredible range of functionality has been sampled in nature, it accounts for a tiny fraction of the possible protein universe. If we could tap into this pool of unexplored protein structures, we could search for novel proteins with useful properties that we could apply to tackle the environmental and medical challenges facing humanity. This is the purpose of protein design. Sequence design is an important aspect of protein design, and many successful methods to do this have been developed. Recently, deep-learning methods that frame it as a classification problem have emerged as a powerful approach. Beyond their reported improvement in performance, their primary advantage over physics-based methods is that the computational burden is shifted from the user to the developers, thereby increasing accessibility to the design method. Despite this trend, the tools for assessment and comparison of such models remain quite generic. The goal of this paper is to both address the timely problem of evaluation and to shine a spotlight, within the Machine Learning community, on specific assessment criteria that will accelerate impact. We present a carefully curated benchmark set of proteins and propose a number of standard tests to assess the performance of deep learning based methods. Our robust benchmark provides biological insight into the behaviour of design methods, which is essential for evaluating their performance and utility. We compare five existing models with two novel models for sequence prediction. Finally, we test the designs produced by these models with AlphaFold2, a state-of-the-art structure-prediction algorithm, to determine if they are likely to fold into the intended 3D shapes., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

An observational program focused on the high redshift ($2

Measurements of the clustering of galaxies in Fourier space, and at low wavenumbers, offer a window into the early Universe via the possible presence of scale dependent bias generated by Primordial Non Gaussianites. On such large scales a Newtonian treatment of density perturbations might not be sufficient to describe the measurements, and a fully relativistic calculation should be employed. The interpretation of the data is thus further complicated by the fact that relativistic effects break statistical homogeneity and isotropy and are potentially divergent in the Infra-Red (IR). In this work we compute for the first time the ensemble average of the most used Fourier space estimator in spectroscopic surveys, including all general relativistic (GR) effects, and allowing for an arbitrary choice of angular and radial selection functions. We show that any observable is free of IR sensitivity once all the GR terms, individually divergent, are taken into account, and that this cancellation is a consequence of the presence of the Weinberg adiabatic mode as a solution to Einstein's equations. We then study the importance of GR effects, including lensing magnification, in the interpretation of the galaxy power spectrum multipoles, finding that they are in general a small, less than ten percent level, correction to the leading redshift space distortions term. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been used for breast cancer aiming at downgrading before surgery. In this article we propose a new quantitative analysis of the effects of the neoadjuvant therapy to obtain numerical, personalized, predictions on the shrinkage of the tumor size after the drug doses, by data assimilation of the individual patient. The algorithm has been validated by a sample of 37 patients with histological diagnosis of locally advanced primary breast carcinoma. The biopsy specimen, the initial tumor size and its reduction after each treatment were known for all patients. We find that: a) the measure of tumor size at the diagnosis and after the first dose permits to predict the size reduction for the follow up; b) the results are in agreement with our data sample, within 10-20 %, for about 90% of the patients. The quantitative indications suggest the best time for surgery. The long wavelength modes lost to bright foregrounds in the interferometric 21-cm surveys can partially be recovered using a forward modeling approach that exploits the non-linear coupling between small and large scales induced by gravitational evolution. In this work, we build upon this approach by considering how adding external galaxy distribution data can help to fill in these modes. We consider supplementing the 21-cm data at two different redshifts with a spectroscopic sample (good radial resolution but low number density) loosely modeled on DESI-ELG at $z=1$ and a photometric sample (high number density but poor radial resolution) similar to LSST sample at $z=1$ and $z=4$ respectively. We find that both the galaxy samples are able to reconstruct the largest modes better than only using 21-cm data, with the spectroscopic sample performing significantly better than the photometric sample despite much lower number density. We demonstrate the synergies between surveys by showing that the primordial initial density field is reconstructed better with the combination of surveys than using either of them individually. Strangeness enhancement and collective flow are considered signatures of the quark gluon plasma formation. These phenomena have been detected not only in relativistic heavy ion collisions but also in high energy, high multiplicity events of proton-proton and proton-nucleus (small systems) scatterings.
