Abstract

En este artículo se presenta una metodología de docencia cooperativa para la enseñanza de programación en asignaturas de ingeniería relacionadas con la automatización industrial, y su adaptación a la educación secundaria en asignaturas relacionadas con tecnologías de la información. El objetivo básico es facilitar la comprensión de los conceptos de programación, y la metodología organiza a los estudiantes en pequeños grupos y asigna tareas específicas de programación. Se ha llevado a cabo un estudio con 18 estudiantes universitarios de ingeniería y 52 estudiantes de educación secundaria. Los resultados demuestran que con el uso de esta metodología se consigue mejorar la comprensión y aplicación de los materiales de las asignaturas en comparación con las estrategias de aprendizaje individual. Además, los grupos cooperativos muestran una actitud más positiva hacia las asignaturas, lo que se refleja en una mayor motivación y mejores resultados de aprendizaje. Los estudiantes en ambos niveles educativos expresaron comentarios positivos sobre la metodología propuesta. Estos resultados resaltan la importancia del aprendizaje cooperativo en la ingeniería y la educación secundaria. Se pretende explorar la aplicación de estos métodos en diferentes campos y los beneficios para estudiantes con diferentes niveles de experiencia en programación en futuras investigaciones.

En el presente proyecto se han desarrollado y aplicado métodos y estrategias de enseñanza de la programación a estudiantes para los que no es una materia básica o central para su formación. En estos métodos se combinan diferentes paradigmas como la enseñanza de programación estructurada y programación orientada a objetos, así como técnicas de gamificación. La metodología se enfoca en la adquisición de las destrezas o capacidades de abstracción en la formalización y resolución de problemas, que son imprescindibles para el futuro laboral del estudiantado en las titulaciones y niveles que han sido objeto del trabajo del proyecto. Las metodologías docentes diseñadas se han aplicado en asignaturas de grados de ingeniería del ámbito industrial y también han sido adaptadas al caso de la enseñanza de Informática en algunos cursos de Enseñanza Secundaria. Como resultado principal del trabajo realizado se ha podido comprobar que se ha obtenido una mejora cuantitativa en las calificaciones del estudiantado respecto de cursos previos, o de los bloques en los que no se ha aplicado la metodología, y que se han asimilado de una manera más efectiva los conocimientos de estas materias, ayudando a mejorar la percepción negativa que en ocasiones se tiene de las mismas.

Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the advantages of a master-slave robotic rehabilitation therapy in which the patient is assisted in real-time by a therapist. We have also explored if this type of strategy is applicable in a tele-rehabilitation environment. A pilot study has been carried out involving 10 patients who have performed a point-to-point rehabilitation exercise supported by three assistance modalities: fixed assistance (without therapist interaction), local therapist assistance, and remote therapist assistance in a simulated tele-rehabiliation scenario. The rehabilitation exercise will be performed using an upper-limb rehabilitation robotic device that assists the patients through force fields. The results suggest that the assistance provided by the therapist is better adapted to patient needs than fixed assistance mode. Therefore, it maximizes the patient’s level of effort, which is an important aspect to improve the rehabilitation outcomes. We have also seen that in a tele-rehabilitation environment it is more difficult to assess when to assist the patient than locally. However, the assistance suits patients better than the fixed assistance mode.

Abstract

Robotics to support elderly people in living independently and to assist disabled people in carrying out the activities of daily living independently have demonstrated good results. Basically, there are two approaches: one of them is based on mobile robot assistants, such as Care-O-bot, PR2, and Tiago, among others; the other one is the use of an external robotic arm or a robotic exoskeleton fixed or mounted on a wheelchair. In this paper, a modular mobile robotic platform to assist moderately and severely impaired people based on an upper limb robotic exoskeleton mounted on a robotized wheel chair is presented. This mobile robotic platform can be customized for each user’s needs by exploiting its modularity. Finally, experimental results in a simulated home environment with a living room and a kitchen area, in order to simulate the interaction of the user with different elements of a home, are presented. In this experiment, a subject suffering from multiple sclerosis performed different activities of daily living (ADLs) using the platform in front of a group of clinicians composed of nurses, doctors, and occupational therapists. After that, the subject and the clinicians replied to a usability questionnaire. The results were quite good, but two key factors arose that need to be improved: the complexity and the cumbersome aspect of the platform.

Abstract

[EN] Assistive technologies help all persons with disabilities to improve their accessibility in all aspects of their life. The AIDE European project contributes to the improvement of current assistive technologies by developing and testing a modular and adaptive multimodal interface customizable to the individual needs of people with disabilities. This paper describes the computer vision algorithms part of the multimodal interface developed inside the AIDE European project. The main contribution of this computer vision part is the integration with the robotic system and with the other sensory systems (electrooculography (EOG) and electroencephalography (EEG)). The technical achievements solved herein are the algorithm for the selection of objects using the gaze, and especially the state-of-the-art algorithm for the efficient detection and pose estimation of textureless objects. These algorithms were tested in real conditions, and were thoroughly evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The experimental results of the object selection algorithm were excellent (object selection over 90%) in less than 12 s. The detection and pose estimation algorithms evaluated using the LINEMOD database were similar to the state-of-the-art method, and were the most computationally efficient.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of an optical force sensor architecture directed to prototyping and cost-effective applications, where the actual force requirements are still not well defined or the most suitable commercial technologies would highly increase the cost of the device. The working principle of this sensor consists of determining the displacement of a lens by measuring the distortion of a refracted light beam. This lens is attached to an elastic interface whose elastic constant is known, allowing the estimation of the force that disturbs the optical system. In order to satisfy the requirements of the design process in an inexpensive way, this sensor can be built by fast prototyping technologies and using non-optical grade elements. To deal with the imperfections of this kind of manufacturing procedures and materials, four fitting models are proposed to calibrate the implemented sensor. In order to validate the system, two different sensor implementations with measurement ranges of ±45 N and ±10 N are tested with the proposed models, comparing the resulting force estimation with respect to an industrial-grade load cell. Abstract

Hand exoskeleton potential applications reach further than grasping or assistance during manipulation. In this paper, we present a preliminary study of how this technology can be applied in order to improve performance during standing to help the user to keep balance under perturbations. Non-impaired users wearing a hand exoskeleton gripping a hand rail were pushed by a cable-driven robot, so that their standing equilibrium was perturbed. The center of pressure, surface electromyography, and interaction force data were recorded in order to assess the performance of users and their postural strategy. The results showed that users could keep their balance with the same outcomes using their bare hands and the hand exoskeleton. However, when wearing the exoskeleton, a higher muscular activity was registered in hand flexor muscles. This is also supported by the grasping force, which shows that users stretched their hand more than expected when wearing the hand exoskeleton. This paper concludes that it is possible that the lack of tactile feedback could lead to over compensation in the grasping. Therefore, the next studies will aim to check whether this effect can be reversed by training users to wear the exoskeleton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
