1. Climate of a cave laboratory representative for rock art caves in the Vézère area (south-west France)

Abstract: Leye Cave (Dordogne, France) is a laboratory cave in the Vézère area, a region that contains some of the most famous rock art caves in the world such as Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume and Combarelles, and is listed as Human World Heritage by UNESCO. Leye Cave was selected because it is representative of painted caves, with respect to parameters such as its geological stage, the presence of water and carbon dioxide, the geological state of its walls, and the size of the cave. These wall states are studied to better understand the conditions of conservation of rock art caves without damaging them. The choice of an equivalent medium, i.e., a non-painted cave, was made to be able to conduct experiments or take measurements that would not have been possible in a rock art cave. The climatic conditions (temperature, hygrometry, etc.) monitored since 2011 are central to our understanding of the genesis and evolution of wall states. Leye Cave is sub-horizontal then descendant, forming a cold air trap. The phenomenon of condensation is thought to be important in the genesis of these wall states. Our article presents a model which describes the competition that exists between the conduction of the rock heating the air and the convection cooling the rock, in the area named the “Throne Chamber”, located in the deepest parts of the cave.

2. 35,000 years of recurrent visits inside Nerja cave (Andalusia, Spain) based on charcoals and soot micro-layers analyses

Abstract: Abstract Charcoal and micro-layers of soot trapped in speleothems from the inner galleries of Nerja Cave were analysed through an interdisciplinary study. The absolute dating of the prehistoric subterranean activity of the cave and the identification of different phases of visits to the deep parts are presented and discussed. The charcoal analysis includes anthracological analysis and SEM–EDX. The soot analysis includes optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and TEM–EDX, and the microcounting of soot microlayers. The 14C dating of 53 charcoals identified 12 phases of prehistoric visits to the cave between 41,218 and 3299 cal. BP, putting back the origin of human occupation of this emblematic cave by 10,000 years. The interdisciplinary analysis of the soot microlayers allowed us to perform a high-precision zoom on the last three visitation phases identified by Bayesian analysis (8003–2998 cal. BP.), demonstrating that these phases contain at least 64 distinct incursions, with an average of one visit every 35 years for the Neolithic period. Spatial analysis showed that not all areas of the cave were used in the same periods, highlighting the repetition of visits to certain specific sectors of the Lower Galleries of the cave. Lastly, the anthracological data indicate a cross-cultural and unique use of Pinus tp. sylvestris-nigra wood for lighting activities over an extended period between the Gravettian and Upper Magdalenian.

Abstract: Abstract Higher education in evolutionary anthropology involves providing students with in‐depth knowledge of biological and cultural heritage sites and collections that are frequently inaccessible. Indeed, most sites, fossils, and archaeological remains can be visited or manipulated only rarely and solely by specialists with extensive experience. Owing to the development of 3D and medical imaging techniques, this fragile heritage is now more widely accessible, and in a dynamic way. However, exclusive adoption of virtual teaching and learning has a negative impact on student engagement and, naturally, on exchanges with instructors, and thus cannot be used without some reservations. In the ITAP (Immersion dans les Terrains de l’Anthropologie biologique et de la Préhistoire) project of the higher education STEP (Soutien à la Transformation et à l’Expérimentation Pédagogiques) transformation program at the University of Bordeaux, we combine student‐active teaching with Master's students fully immersed in ongoing fieldwork, laboratory study, and dissemination of research results in order to develop more individually shaped learning curricula and to foster both professional and new interdisciplinary skills. Here, we present examples of experiments conducted in the ITAP project using both authentic and virtual collections of archaeological, experimental, and reference materials that help to break down the barriers between research activities and higher education, as well as providing a more general appraisal of the appropriate use of virtual tools in higher education by combining them with real‐life situations.

4. Mandible and teeth characterization of the Gravettian child from Gargas, France

Abstract: While affinities and interactions between archaic and modern human populations (i.e. 200,000-40,000 BP in Eurasia) at macro-evolutionary and continental scales have received considerable attention, there has been less emphasis on the population history of Europe between 40,000 and 26,000 BP (i.e. prior to the Last glacial Maximum, LGM) when only modern humans were present. Here we examine the immature mandible from Gargas (France, ca. 29,000 cal BP), which displays a modern morphology overall with some archaic features rarely seen, if at all, in European Pleistocene and Holocene modern humans. In particular, the Gargas child has a very broad mandible, large tooth crowns with extreme deciduous and permanent mesiodistal molar diameters and a deciduous first molar with a quantity of enamel never previously reported. Furthermore, this child exhibits a supernumerary permanent tooth in the incisor region, a rare congenital disorder so far described for only five other pre-LGM modern humans. Finally, our results also highlight previously undocumented spatial differences in the tooth crown dimensions of Upper Palaeolithic fossils.

Abstract: The recently discovered (2000) Cussac Cave is one of the major elaborately decorated caves for which the Ministry of Culture immediately invoked protective measures, including climatic controls and land and equipment purchases. A multi- and inter-disciplinary research programme was launched in 2009 as part of a Projet collectif de recherche (PCR) (A Collaborative Research Project) that provides for integrated conservation with study. Aside from its large size (1.6 km) and—due to the efforts of the speleologists who found the cave—its excellent state of preservation, Cussac Cave is distinctive because of the co-occurrence of uniquely engraved decorated panels, often of a monumental size, and contemporaneous human remains found in three locations. As in all other recently discovered decorated caves, the current study project is ambitious and holistic. The current research is, however, very focussed in scope, concentrating principally on ichnology (fossilised animal and human imprints), biological anthropology, and archaeothanatology. After the first few years of the initial stages of this multi-disciplinary project, the last few years have seen the successful integration of the work of geoscientists, anthropologists, ichnologists, experts in parietal art, and prehistorians with the application of new technological innovations, such as topographic mapping, 3D imaging, and geographic information systems. The following text provides an overview of some of these research endeavours.

6. The conquest of the dark spaces: An experimental approach to lighting systems in Paleolithic caves.

Abstract: Artificial lighting was a crucial physical resource for expanding complex social and economic behavior in Paleolithic groups. Furthermore, the control of fire allowed the development of the first symbolic behavior in deep caves, around 176 ky BP. These activities would increase during the Upper Paleolithic, when lighting residues proliferated at these sites. The physical peculiarities of Paleolithic lighting resources are very poorly understood, although this is a key aspect for the study of human activity within caves and other dark contexts. In this work, we characterize the main Paleolithic lighting systems (e.g., wooden torches, portable fat lamps, and fireplaces) through empirical observations and experimental archeology in an endokarstic context. Furthermore, each lighting system's characteristic combustion residues were identified to achieve a better identification for the archaeological record. The experiments are based on an exhaustive review of archaeological information about this topic. Besides, we apply the estimated luminous data of a Paleolithic cave with Paleolithic art (Atxurra in northern Spain) in 3D through GIS technology to delve into the archeologic implications of illumination in Paleolithic underground activities.

Abstract: International audience; Kozarnika cave is a renowned prehistoric site in the Balkans, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the human past due to its rich assemblages associated with the Lower to Upper Palaeolithic. Various dating methods have been employed to unravel the timing of human occupations in Kozarnika. Radiocarbon dating was used to unfold the time frame for the Kozarnikian lithic tradition uncovered in the Upper Palaeolithic sequence of the cave, and palaeomagnetic dating assigned the Brunhes–Matuyama reversal to the layer beneath the Lower Palaeolithic assemblages.In this study, we employed luminescence-dating methods, including a body of different signals to date sediment layers from the top to the bottom of the sequence covering the period of ca 30 to 700 ka. Our investigations revealed that the Kozarnikian tradition in layers 5a-c falls between 30 and 35 ka. Following that, we suggest that the Middle Palaeolithic period initiated between 250 and 309 ka and lasted until 40–53 ka. More importantly, we have updated the age of the Neanderthal radius discovered in the Mousterian assemblages to 201 ± 17 ka.Our dating resulted in a period of ca 300–700 ka for the Lower Palaeolithic assemblages in the cave. Abstract: International audience; The numerical simulation of fires concerns an increasingly wide range of applications, among which archaeology. The Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave (France) presents thermal marks on some of its walls. These marks result from prehistorical fires and archaeologists would like to know their characteristics (fire location, mass of fuel, number of fires, etc) to make assumptions about their functions. Being impossible to carry out fires in the cave, combustion simulation is a suitable tool to discuss this question. However, simulating a fire in a confined geometry is still challenging and some inherent difficulties must be overcome. In that respect, we reproduced four experimental fires in a cave-like geometry. Four tepee-like hearths, composed of different initial wood masses (16, 32, 60 and 90 kg), were burnt in an underground quarry. Twenty-seven thermocouples measured the temperature in the cold and hot gas layers, as well as in the ceiling jet area. The measurements in the ceiling jet resulting from the 90 kg fire are successfully compared to the corrected Delichatsios correlations. In addition, the measured mass loss rate is compared to a tailored modeling for tepee hearths. We also propose three strategies to simulate the combustion process of the 90 kg hearth: (i) with a significant refinement in the ceiling jet area (approximately 1,500,000 cells) and the law of the wall, (ii) without refinement but with Newton’s law of cooling and (iii) without refinement but with simplifying assumptions and adjustments. While the first and third approaches provide meaningful results, the second case is found to be inconvenient for compartment fires. Based on experimental data, this study aims to give some keys to perform simulations of compartment fires (in tunnels, buildings, car parks, etc) and numerically approximate the combustion of wood.

Abstract: International audience; A cryptotephra belonging to the Upper Pleistocene volcanism of the Bas-Vivarais was identified for the first time in the sedimentary infilling of the entrance area of the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc cave. This slightly reworked tephra fall is characterized by its heavy minerals assemblage, among which magnesian olivine, enstatite, and chromian diopside issued from peridotites and olivine and diopside of basaltic origin. This composition likely refers to a phreatomagmatic eruption of a maar-crater. The 14 C datings of the cryptotephra beds are contemporaneous with the Aurignacian settlement and paintings, that is, an age slightly older or close to 36 ka. Among the maar-craters from the Bas-Vivarais, the Ray-Pic maar have the closest 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age (36.2 ± 11.3 / 32.2 ± 11.1 ka). By contrast, the Vestide-du-Pal, the biggest maar-crater of this country, seems to have a younger age, but the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating was measured on a basalt which could have occurred later and been the source of the tephra-fall, since its tephras contain the same minerals of unknown origin as those found in Chauvet Cave. This discovery strengthens the previous hypothesis according to which the humans living in the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc area during the Upper Paleolithic have witnessed eruptions from the Bas-Vivarais volcanic field and other phenomena.

Abstract: The Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave (Ardèche, France), famous for its remarkable rock art, also contains unique thermal-alterations such as rock spalling and color changes on the walls. These alterations resulted from intense fires that have not been observed in the other decorated caves thus far discovered. The functions of these unusual fires challenge archaeologists. To characterize these combustions, we used a numerical tool, previously validated with experimental data, to study the thermo-alterations in the Megaceros Gallery. This unprecedented approach in cave art research enabled us to assess the wood quantities and locations of the hearths responsible for the thermo-alterations. We report here that at least ten fires took place in the Megaceros Gallery while burning more than 170 kg of wood. Both simulation and in situ observations suggest that the branches were arranged in a tepee shape and purposefully positioned, some distance from the walls. This method therefore enables further analysis of the functions of these fires.

Abstract: International audience; Le parcours proposé, proche du cheminement actuel au long des passerelles depuis l’entrée jusqu’au fond de la cavité, invite à découvrir la grotte en vingt cartes extraites de la carte intégrée des sols. Parcourant la grotte dans ses moindres recoins, chacun peut opérer sa propre lecture en fonction de ses centres d’intérêt. La visite de chacune des vingt zones est organisée selon une même structure narra-tive. La première page, accompagnée d’une photographie panoramique, présente les principales caractéristiques de la zone et les thèmes qui seront développés. Selon les secteurs, l’accent est mis sur l’archéologie, la paléontologie, la géologie, la spéléogenèse ou les paysages souterrains. Les deuxième et troisième pages fonctionnent en vis-à-vis et ont été construites pour se répondre. La deuxième page, présente la carte intégrée reproduite au 1:100. Au-dessous, une vignette permet de localiser l’emplacement de la carte dans la cavité. Un petit plan au 1:300 présentant le sol en 3D porte la désignations des lieux, des structures et des œuvres, les cheminements permanents et temporaires mis en place pour l’observation, ainsi que l’angle des prises de vue et le positionnement de la coupe longitudinale de la zone. Une figure synoptique indique à l’aide de curseurs les domaines de recherche les plus marquants. Les pages suivantes proposent un premier niveau de synthèse des observa-tions et des travaux en cours. Ils seront présentés en détail dans les volumes suivants de la Monographie de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc.

Abstract: International audience; This first volume of Monographie de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc presents a reasoned inventory of the information contained in the cave in the form of an atlas. While this type of publication may seem unusual, the dimensions of the cave, the morphology of the chambers and galleries that compart-mentalize its space, as well as the inscription of artworks in its underground landscape, are all invitations to reflect upon, study and structure our knowledge of the cave using a cartographic approach. The progressive presentation of the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc enables us to address, in the most neutral manner possible, the complexity and factual richness, often emphasized, of this underground sanctuary.The proposed itinerary, close to that of the current path of the walkways from the entrance to the end of the cavity, invites us to discover the cave via twenty maps extracted from the integrated map of the cave floors. Moving through the cave and into its smallest and most intimate spaces, each person can shape their reading according to their interests. The visit to each of the twenty zones is organized according to the same narrative structure. The first page, accompa-nied by a panoramic photograph, presents the main charac-teristics of the zone and the themes that will be addressed. Depending on the sectors, the archaeology, paleontology, geology, speleogenesis or underground landscape is empha-sized. The second and third pages are positioned opposite each other and are designed to interact. The second page presents the integrated map reproduced at the 1:100 scale. Below it, a thumbnail representation enables the reader to identify the location of the map within the cave. A small map at the 1:300 scale presents the cave floor in 3D and shows the location, feature and artwork designations, the permanent and temporary paths installed for observations, as well as the camera angles and the position of the longitudinal profile of the zone. A synoptic figure shows the relative representation of each of the research domains in the map zone. The pages that follow provide an initial synthesis of the observations and research in progress. These aspects will be presented in detail in the succeeding volumes of the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc.

Abstract: International audience; In 1994, three speleologists discovered the Chauvet–Pont d’Arc Cave, which contains singular thermal marks on walls deep in the cavity. These alterations arose from intense fires, and understanding their characteristics would help archaeologists suggest hypotheses about the function of such activities. In this context, three confined fires were conducted in a former underground quarry to reproduce thermo-alterations similar to those in the Chauvet–Pont d’Arc Cave and extract experimental data. Each fire involved approximately 135 kg of wood, which was continuously supplied by firemen for safety reasons (> 500°C) and burnt in the shape of a tepee 80 cm in diameter for 50 min. This paper presents the validation of a numerical model on this experimentation. The modelling requires coupling between the combustion and wall impact simulations. Thus, a link between the combustion code FireFOAM and the thermo-mechanical code Cast3m was created with Python scripts. The results from the simulation agree with the measurements and the observations. More specifically, the analysis is based on the temperatures, gas and particle concentrations, gas velocities, soot deposition, colour changes at the walls and areas likely to spall. These data were collected from thirty-seven measuring points covering the whole quarry. This validated tool will provide information about the features of the fires that occurred within the Chauvet–Pont d’Arc Cave.

Abstract: International audience; Dans le cadre des programmes ArTaPOC et PHYT, un outil de géoréférencement 3D a été développé. Il constitue un moyen de sauvegarder les informations, mais aussi de les croiser par l’intermédiaire d’une base de données associée à la 3D des cavités.Les données générées par les différentes disciplines à l’œuvre dans l’étude et la conservation des milieux endokarstiques sont difficilement exploitables dans leur globalité de par leur hétérogénéité, mais aussi de par les difficultés d’appréhension de leur organisation spatiale.Nous avons développé une solution logicielle sous la forme d’un plug-in pour le logiciel Meshlab lié à une base de données en ligne à laquelle nous apportons de nouvelles fonctionnalités qui concernent les éléments géoréférencés. Ces derniers sont des points placés sur des maillages issus de numérisation 3D. Ils contiennent les données des chercheurs qui peuvent être un nom, un commentaire, la discipline concernée, et des données spécifiques comme les valeurs de capteurs (températures et CO2) ou les résultats d’analyse physico-chimiques sous la forme de fichiers joints.Cette base de données est directement consultable dans le modèle 3D avec des outils de filtres et de recherche.La spatialisation des données permet une nouvelle approche dans leur analyse. En effet, de façon analogue aux SIG classiques, les positions 3D des enregistrements peuvent révéler des alignements, des regroupements, ou encore des manques selon des critères d’affichage choisis sur les données elles-mêmes. Il est par exemple possible de mettre en évidence d’un simple coup d’œil des zones d’une cavité ayant subi de fortes variations de températures.Afin de rendre l’utilisation encore plus simple, la visualisation du maillage et de la base de données est possible dans un casque de réalité virtuelle. Contrairement à un écran 2D représentant l’environnement 3D, et une souris 2D permettant de se déplacer, la navigation avec le casque est facilitée par l’immersion.Des expériences sont en cours en réalité mixte et augmentée afin de tester l’adjonction de la base de données sur l’environnement réel. Sur site, les chercheurs auront ainsi accès à leurs données directement dans des lunettes.

Abstract: International audience; A numerical simulation of a wood fire in a natural gallery is compared with experimental data. Temperatures, velocities, gases and particles concentrations as well as soot deposits are the measured quantities of the experiment. We expose in this article the comparison with a simulation performed by the open-source solver FireFOAM. In order to improve the accuracy of the modeling, the initial numerical tool has been modified. A boundary condition for temperature based on energy conservation has been added to better estimate thermal losses at the walls. A hypothesis regarding vertical velocity in a confined geometry containing a localized fire is also made. By assuming that the velocity is exclusively horizontal, the error between simulation and experiment is reduced. With the aim of comparing the temperature measurements with the simulation accurately, the thermocouple model commonly used in FireFOAM has been changed. The limitations of the previous models are also discussed. Then, two combustion side issues are presented. First, the model of Beresnev-Chernyak computes soot deposit on walls. Second, the fractional effective doses (FED) for toxicity, radiation and heat hazards have been implemented to evaluate the safety of the environment during the fire.

35. Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave (Ardeche): morphosedimentary evolution of the entrance. Implication for the occupations and the preservation of remains

Abstract: La conservation exceptionnelle de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc, mondialement connue pour ses representations parietales, est largement due a la fermeture precoce de son porche. Notre etude montre que cette derniere n’a pas ete seulement brutale mais s’inscrit dans une longue evolution morphologique du secteur d’entree. Ainsi, le colmatage debute par des eboulis cryoclastiques qui s’etalent a l’interieur de la cavite par solifluxion. Parmi eux, l’eboulis inferieur renferme un niveau de charbons dates de l’Aurignacien. Puis un ecroulement polyphase de la corniche ferme definitivement la grotte vers 21,5 ± 1 ka. Par la suite, la sedimentation est d’abord essentiellement regie par des ruissellements qui edifient un cone d’atterrissement dans la salle Brunel, puis par des concretionnements qui, a partir de la transition Glaciaire-Post-Glaciaire, se superposent a tous les facies. Hommes et animaux penetrent dans la cavite par un porche largement ouvert a l’Aurignacien. Au Gravettien en revanche, le comblement partiel de l’acces les oblige a ne rentrer que par la seule partie est de ce porche. Une fois la grotte fermee, les sols paleolithiques de la Salle des Bauges, peu perturbes, conservent en surface leurs vestiges, tandis que ceux de la Salle Brunel sont masques par des atterrissements.

Abstract: International audience; Cave Art is a fragile testimony of past humans societies and the development of modern behaviours. In limestone caves, moonmilk commonly endanger the artworks. It is a calcite-deposit known to present a large variability of chemical composition and morphological structures, hosting numerous microbial communities. The possibility to characterize this deposit on the field would help to get a better understanding of the cave behaviour and set up proper conservation measures. The present study analyses the variability of a moonmilk strip of metric size in the Leye Cave. This cave located in the Vézère valley (Dordogne, France) is not ornate, and has been selected to become a laboratory cave in which in-situ observations and micro-sampling can be carried out, before performing them into cavities hosting parietal artworks. SEM observations of twenty-four samples allowed investigating, for the first time, the variability of the moonmilk deposit over a same wall of few meters dimension. Our observations highlight low variability of moonmilk at the microscopic scale regarding the chemical composition and the morphological structures despite significant macroscopic diversity, thus providing insights to optimize the sampling strategy of moonmilk in ornate caves.

Abstract: Cussac Cave, discovered in 2000 in the Dordogne department of France, is one of the major decorated and sepulchral sites of the Gravettian period of the Upper Palaeolithic. It contains spectacular engravings, human remains—some of which were deposited in bear hibernation nests—and other well-preserved artefacts and traces of human and animal activity, such as human and cave bear footprints. The exceptional preservation of this cave is due to its recent discovery (followed by an extensive preservation program) and the apparent absence of human frequentation since the Gravettian period. As part of the multidisciplinary research program developed since 2008 (PCR Cussac, dir. J. Jaubert), this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the factors—natural and/or cultural—that influenced the Gravettian people in their selection and general distribution of rock art panels in the cave. We investigate the nature of the rock support, location, surroundings, accessibility, and visibility of 31 panels. For this purpose, we developed an innovative methodology combining the data recorded in a dedicated database and on topographic documents with data processing using complex statistics (Factor Analysis for Mixed Data - FAMD). Through this work, we identified three groups of panels that reveal three ways of using the cave, two of which appear homogenous. Group 1 is characterized by small panels located in narrow passageways of the Palaeolithic path in the Downstream Branch of the cave. These panels share a strong potential for visual relationships whereas it is impossible for more than four people to see a given panel at the same time. In contrast, Group 3, also mainly located in the Downstream Branch, is composed of large panels with numerous graphic entities. These panels are always located in wide corridors and distant from the natural path, and their field of visibility is thus large enough to accommodate a small group of individuals. They also share visual relationships with other panels. Finally, Group 2 contains fewer intrinsic criteria, though all the panels are situated between the beginning of the Downstream Branch and the Upstream Branch, and they are visually isolated from each other. This study yields evidence of a strong interaction between geological and cultural factors in the selection of the rock art panels in Cussac Cave. The Gravettian people that frequented Cussac Cave linked their cultural goals to what the cave had to offer in terms of geology, geomorphology and available space. They adapted to—and even optimized—both the opportunities and constraints of the cave, thus demonstrating a strong interaction between geological and cultural parameters.

Abstract: La grotte de Cussac est l’un des sanctuaires ornés majeurs récemment découverts (2000), et pour lequel le ministère de la Culture a pris immédiatement des mesures de protection, de suivi climatique, d’acquisition foncière et d’équipement. Le projet collectif de recherche (Pcr) lancé en 2009 conçoit la conservation et l’étude comme parties d’un tout indivisible. L’originalité du site, outre la longueur de sa galerie (1,6 km) et son excellente conservation, due à la vigilance des inventeurs spéléologues, est la coexistence de panneaux ornés presque uniquement gravés, souvent monumentaux, et de restes humains contemporains concentrés dans trois locus. Comme pour toute grotte ornée récemment découverte, le projet d’étude est ambitieux et global mais le contexte d’accès au site est cependant très contraint, en particulier pour l’ichnologie, l’anthropologie biologique ou l’archéothanatologie. Après les premières années de mise en place du projet, logiquement pluridisciplinaire, l’interaction entre les principales équipes œuvrant dans Cussac (géosciences, anthropologues, ichnologues, pariétalistes, préhistoriens) en lien avec les utilisateurs « d’outils communs » (topographie, 3D, photogrammétrie, Sig, archivage) est désormais omniprésente. Nous résumons quelques-uns de ces différents volets dans le texte synthétique qui suit. The recently discovered (2000) Cussac Cave is one of the major elaborately decorated caves for which the Ministry of Culture immediately invoked protective measures, including climatic controls and land and equipment purchases. A multi- and inter-disciplinary research programme was launched in 2009 as part of a Projet collectif de recherche (PCR) (A Collaborative Research Project) that provides for integrated conservation with study. Aside from its large size (1.6 km) and—due to the efforts of the speleologists who found the cave—its excellent state of preservation, Cussac Cave is distinctive because of the co-occurrence of uniquely engraved decorated panels, often of a monumental size, and contemporaneous human remains found in three locations. As in all other recently discovered decorated caves, the current study project is ambitious and holistic. The current research is, however, very focussed in scope, concentrating principally on ichnology (fossilised animal and human imprints), biological anthropology, and archaeothanatology. After the first few years of the initial stages of this multi-disciplinary project, the last few years have seen the successful integration of the work of geoscientists, anthropologists, ichnologists, experts in parietal art, and prehistorians with the application of new technological innovations, such as topographic mapping, 3D imaging, and geographic information systems. The following text provides an overview of some of these research endeavours.

Abstract: International audience; The cave of Bourrouilla at Arancou (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) and the rockshelter of the Grand Pastou at Sorde-l’Abbaye (Landes) are two sites in the extreme south of Aquitaine, on the edge of the Pyrenean foothills. The excavations were done within the framework of multi-year programs, using Cartesian recording methods of finds and yielded comparable stratigraphic sequences in which the Upper Magdalenian is well represented. The analytical approach taken at the two sites is analogous, in particular as regards verification of the conservation status of the different occupation layers.The Grand Pastou Rockshelter contains a rather homogeneous sedimentary sequence within which several stratigraphic units arenonetheless identifiable. The top of the sequence documents visits of the site attributable to the Terminal Magdalenian as evidencedby the presence of thumbnail scrapers and a cortical flake of flint engraved with a geometric motif. The underlying layers document aclassic Upper Magdalenian with no noticeable changes in basic contents from the base to the top.The excavations at the Bourrouilla site were located in the rear chamber of the cave, under the entrance overhang (“porch”) and infront of it. However, a karstic resurgence in the corridor prohibits stratigraphic correlations between the back room on the one hand andthe porch area and exterior on the other. Nevertheless, both sequences document occupations attributable to the Upper Magdalenian(Ensemble B in the vestibule and outside, and US [Stratigraphic Unit] 2007 in the cave). The geoarchaeological study and refittingsconfirm that the archaeological levels are well preserved, which is consistent with a series of radiocarbon dates.The comparison between archaeological data from the two sites leads to the identification of both clear similarities and differences.Both reindeer and red deer played essential roles in the hunted fauna at both sites. The snowy owl is well represented; salmon is rarein the Grand Pastou, while it is abundant in certain levels of Bourrouilla (US 2007 E), mirroring an interesting difference between thenearby sites of Durfaure and Duruthy. Lithic and bone industries in the two sites are similary, but do also present slight differences.The first similarity lies in major exploitation of raw materials available on the alluvial terraces of the nearby Gaves rivers, where flyschflint dominates. The second common point is the absence of the initial phases of the operating chains. Although the basic tools andthe preponderance of bladelet tools constitute two other similarities, it is clear that some tools appear only in one series: Hamburgianpoints in the Grand Pastou, Teyjat points and backed bladelets with Couze-type truncations in Bourrouilla. In addition, the latter site(Ensemble B) documents an independent bladelets production chain from carenoïds nucleus.The bone industry of both deposits has mainly technological and typological similarities. In particular, the practice of double groovingfor “splinter” blank removal was employed on cervid (both reindeer and red deer) antler and bone, as well as the presence of raremicro-harpoons in the archaeological series. In Bourrouilla, elements made of deer and reindeer antlers bear the stigmata of a percussionextraction, although it is impossible to identify the aims of this method.For their part, the personal ornaments and portable art objects display strong divergences, even if they are part of the spectrum of classicsymbolic productions of the Upper Magdalenian. The personal ornaments of the Grand Pastou are marked by the presence of numerousshells, which are very rare in Bourrouilla. In the latter site, it is noted that perforated red deer canines do not appear everywhere andare notably absent from the base of US 2007. The portable art of Bourouilla also offers a diversity and richness that contrasts with thepoverty of such material in the Grand Pastou. The presence of a series of pendants and decorated smoothers, made on split ribs, proofof remarkable technical mastery, is the central element in the symbolic production at the site. However, the corpus is more varied,includingboth prepared and unprepared organic and lithic blanks, and documenting varying levels of technical mastery. In this aspectof material culture, the only common point between Bourrouilla and Grand Pastou is the use of snowy owl bones in the manufactureand the decoration of tubes.The deposits correspond to different seasons of occupations: cold season in the Grand Pastou, where the occupation extended into thebeginning of the warm season, versus the warm season until the autumn at Bourrouilla, where the catching of salmon was possible atthe time of their run upstream to the Pyrenean spawning areas. It remains, however, difficult to interpret data which probably reflectslight chronological differences and nuances in the function of the sites accentuated by the relative representativeness of the areassearched in relation to the areas occupied and the activities practiced.; La grotte de Bourrouilla à Arancou (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) et l'abri du Grand Pastou à Sorde-l'Abbaye (Landes) sont deux gisements de l'extrême sud de l'Aquitaine, situés dans le piémont pyrénéen ou à son immédiate proximité. Ils font l'objet de fouilles programmées mettant en oeuvre des méthodes d'enregistrements fins des données de terrain et livrent des séquences stratigraphiques comparables où le Magdalénien supérieur est bien représenté. La démarche adoptée sur les deux sites présente des analogies, notam-ment quant à la vérification de l'état de conservation des différents niveaux d'occupation. Le croisement des données archéologiques issues des deux sites conduit à identifier des parentés évidentes et des différences. Si le cerf (Cervus elaphus) tient une place essentielle dans la faune chassée sur les deux sites et si la chouette harfang (Bubo scandiacus) est bien représentée, le saumon (Salmo salar) est rare au Grand Pastou alors qu'il est abondant dans certains niveaux de Bourrouilla. Les équipements lithiques et osseux sont proches mais offrent eux aussi de légères différences. Pour leur part, la parure et l'art mobilier témoignent de fortes divergences, même s'ils s'inscrivent dans le spectre des productions symboliques classiques du Magdalénien supérieur. Au-delà du fait que les gisements correspondent à des saisons d'occupations différentes, il reste difficile d'interpréter les données reflétant sans doute de légers décalages chronologiques et des nuances dans la fonction des sites, qu'accentue la représentati-vité toute relative des surfaces fouillées par rapport aux aires occupées et aux activités pratiquées. Abstract: International audience; The Grotte Chauvet is world renowned for the quality and diversity of its Palaeolithic art. Fire was particularly important to the occupants, providing light and producing charcoal for use in motifs. Charcoal samples were taken systematically from features associated with the two main occupation phases (Aurignacian and Gravettian). Analysis showed it to be composed almost entirely of pine (Pinus sp.), indicating the harsh climatic conditions at this period. No distinction in wood species was found between either the two occupation episodes or the various depositional contexts. The results throw new light on the cultural and palaeoenvironmental factors that influenced choices underlying the collection of wood for charcoal production.

Abstract: International audience; Since 2004, new research has been conducted at Gargas, a decorated cave site located in the center of the Pyrenees mountain chain. Based on combined studies of the raw materials used to manufacture lithic and bone tools and personal ornaments, along with a zooarchaeo-logical analysis of the faunal remains, we have obtained a more thorough understanding of the resources used by the Gravettian groups that occupied the cave from 28,000 to 25,000 BP. This economic strategy was practiced in a foothill environment between the mid-mountain zones and large alluvial plains of the Garonne and Neste rivers, in order to procure both animal (hunted fauna, collection of shed cervid antler) and lithic (alluvial quartzites, Flysch and Petites Pyrénées flints) resources In this particular context, we will address the flint procurement strategies employed by the Gravettians, given the absence of this raw material within a range of 25-45 km around the cave. While this economic model existed mainly in this foothill environment, we nonetheless observe an extension of the Gravettian economic and social spheres into the Atlantic and Perigord regions, represented by the materials used for personal ornaments (perforated shells) and some allochthonous flints.; Situado en el centro de la cadena de los Pirineos, la cueva de Gargás – complejo de arte parietal y sitio de hábitat- ha sido objeto de nuevas investigaciones desde 2004. A partir de estudios interdisciplinares sobre las materias primas utilizadas en las series óseas, líticas y de adornos personales, además del análisis arqueozoológico de los vestigios de fauna, se ha podido percibir mejor el panel de recursos movilizados por los grupos gravetienses que ocuparon el yacimiento entre 28 000 y 25 000 BP. El marco económico se inscribe en un contexto de valle, entre la media montaña y las llanuras aluviales del Garona y la Neste, tanto en lo relativo a los recursos bióticos (fauna cazada, recogida de astas de desmogue) como los minerales (cuarcitas aluviales, silex del Flysch y de las sierras de Petites Pyrénées). En este medio natural particular, se abordan las estrategias de abastecimiento en sílex adoptadas por los Gravetienses, dada la carencia de esta materia prima en un radio entre 25-45 km alrededor de la cueva. Si el modelo económico de los Gravetienses de Gargás se desarrolla de forma prioritaria en el entorno del valle próximo, se pude apreciar una ampliación de los ámbitos de explotación / intercambio de recursos hasta el Atlántico y la región del Périgord, perceptible a través del origen de los elementos de adorno sobre conchas perforadas y de ciertos sílex alóctonos.; 2004tik zenbait ikerketa egin dira Gargas, Pirinioetako mendikatearen erdialdean dagoen koba gune apainduan. Hala erakusten du apaingarritarako (zulatutako oskolak) erabiltzen zituzten materialek eta silex aloktono batzuek.; Situé au centre de la chaîne des Pyrénées, le site de Gargas – grotte ornée et habitat – fait l’objet de nouvelles recherches, depuis 2004. A partir des études croisées des matières premières utilisées pour les assemblages lithiques, osseux et les parures, ainsi que de l’analyse archéozoologique des vestiges de faune, nous avons obtenu un meilleur aperçu des ressources mobilisées par les groupes gravettiens ayant fréquenté cette grotte entre 28 000 et 25 000 BP. Le cadre économique s’inscrit dans un environnement de piémont, entre moyenne montagne et grandes plaines alluviales (celles de la Garonne et de la Neste) tant dans les ressources vivrières (faune chassée, ramassage des bois de chute des cervidés) que lithiques (quartzites alluviaux, silex du Flysch et des Petites Pyrénées). Dans ce contexte particulier, nous aborderons les stratégies d’approvisionnement en silex mises en œuvre par les Gravettiens, étant donné l’absence de cette matière première aux alentours de la grotte dans un rayon de 25-45 km. Si le modèle économique des Gravettiens de Gargas se développe principalement dans la zone de piémont, on perçoit toutefois un élargissement des sphères économiques et sociales jusqu’à l’Atlantique et le Périgord, à travers l’origine des supports des parures (coquillages percés) et de certains silex allochtones.

Abstract: The Lascaux Cave, located in the south-eastern part of the department of the Dordogne (24, France), is considered to be one of the most important prehistoric caves in the world. The scope of this study is the protection and conservation of the Lascaux paintings from a hydrogeological and climatic environmental standpoint. Geophysical methods enable us to monitor the environment of the decorated cave in a non-invasive way. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) using a pole–dipole array, together with analysis of the local effective rainfall (groundwater recharge) and the flow in the cave, helps us to identify an area where upstream underground water is probably stored e.g. a recharge zone. There is a relationship between resistivity change in this zone and the underground flow measured in the cave, but with a time lag. Thus systematic electrical surveys following rainy periods could be used to predict the beginning of the underground flow and in so doing provide valuable advice for the preservation of the Lascaux Cave. Abstract: International audience; Numerous fire marks occur on the walls of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave. Dating indicated that some of the fires were contemporary to the Aurignacian. Violent thermal shocks were observed in surprisingly narrow areas of the cave. This raises numerous archaeological questions about the function of the fires; the answers depend on the location of the hearths, and the intensity of the fires. Numerical simulation was used here to provide information about the behaviour of fires in such confined spaces. An underground non-archaeological site, in a limestone quarry, was equipped to monitor fires in an environment similar to that of the Megaceros gallery of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave. The fire and the movement of heat and smoke in the quarry were simulated by the open source code “Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS)”. Results were validated on wall temperatures recorded behind and above the fire. The thermo-mechanical impact of the fire on the rock was simulated with CAST3M software, providing the most probable zones for limestone spalling due to thermal gradients. The validated approach will, in a forthcoming study, be applied to the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave, in which coupled simulations in the air and in the rock should indicate the location of the hearths and the intensity of the fires that generated the marks.

Abstract: International audience; Excavations conducted by a Bulgarian-French team at Kozarnika Cave (Balkans, Bulgaria) during several seasons yielded a long Paleolithic archaeological sequence and led to the discovery of important faunal, lithic, and human samples. This paper aims to describe the unpublished radius shaft of an infant who died approximately before the sixth month postnatal that was recovered from layer 10b, which contained East Balkan Levallois Mousterian with bifacial leaf points. The layer was dated between 130 and 200 ka (large mammals biochronology) and between 128 ± 13 ka and 183 ± 14 ka (OSL), i.e. OIS6. Here we show that, given the scarcity of Middle Pleistocene infant remains in general, and Middle Paleolithic human remains from this part of Eastern Europe in particular, the study of the Kozarnika specimen is of special interest. We discuss its place in the Middle Pleistocene European hominine record and substantiate the hypothesis of early Neanderthal presence in the eastern Balkans.

50. Les parois chauffées de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc (Ardèche, France) : caractérisation et chronologie

Abstract: Les recherches sur la taphonomie des parois ornées de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc ont conduit à l’identification et à l’étude détaillée de traces résultant d’un processus de chauffe : teintes rose et grise de la roche, écaillage et dépôts dus à la fumée. Ce faciès thermique a été observé aussi bien dans les premières salles, comportant majoritairement des peintures rouges, que dans les salles profondes où se trouvent la plupart des représentations réalisées au charbon de bois. Une étude paléothermométrique par thermoluminescence a été mise en œuvre sur des fragments de calcaire rubéfié collectés au sol ou sur les parois. Elle montre que la roche a été chauffée dans le passé à des températures comprises entre 300 et 375°C selon l’échantillon. Les données chronologiques, tant absolues (datation C14 des charbons) que relatives (relation avec les représentations pariétales) indiquent que les feux se rapportent principalement à l’Aurignacien. La fonction de ces feux reste inconnue : éclairage, ravivage de torche, production de colorant, ou encore de fumée ou de chaleur sans nécessité directe autre que symbolique, modification de l’état de surface de la paroi, protection vis-à-vis des ours qui fréquentaient la grotte en même temps que les hommes... Researches on the taphonomy of the rock art walls of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave led to the identification and the detailed study of marks resulting from a heating process : pink and grey color of the rock, flakes due to the heat, and soot deposits. This thermal facies was observed in the first rooms, where the main red paintings are located, as well as in the deep rooms where most of the charcoal paintings were found. A paleothermometric study was undertaken by a thermoluminescence analysis of reddened limestone chips sampled on the archaeological floor or extracted from the walls. As a result, this study showed that the surface of the rock was heated in the past at temperatures ranging from 300 to 375°C according to the sample. The chronological data (C14 datings of the charcoals and relative chronology with the rock art) link the fires mostly to the Aurignacian. The function of the fires remains unknown : lighting, getting the torch going again, colourant production, smoke, heat production, without other reason than symbolic, modification of the wall state, protection from the bears who were present in the cave at the same period...
