To explore parents' and carers' perceptions of parenting a child with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).A retrospective analysis of a questionnaire of parents and carers of children with hip dysplasia. Data analysis was guided by qualitative content analysis.There were 753 responses describing a range of parenting experiences. Three themes emerged: arduous parenting , detailed the parenting challenges, both practical and emotional posed by the management of DDH; insufficient understanding , described the social disconnection experienced by the respondents due to a lack of empathy from others; inconsistent guidance , encompassed respondents' reliance on health professionals for information and support, yet frustration at variability in the management of DDH.Overall, having to care for a child with DDH has a negative effect on the practice of parenting. Health professionals can support parenting and provide consistent education to assist parents' understanding of the complex nature of DDH management. What this study adds to the evidence: Despite a good prognosis, the diagnosis of hip dysplasia has a negative effect on of parenting. Parents and carers of children with hip dysplasia rely on the support of health professionals but find the associated loss of parenting autonomy distressing.

Emerging literature continues to demonstrate the use of innovative practices such as simulated-based learning experiences to prepare students for professional placements. This scoping review aimed to provide a broad overview of how simulated-based learning experiences have been implemented within or immediately before the professional practice placements of entry-level allied health programs. Four databases (MEDLINE, EMCARE, CINAHL, and Scopus) were searched up to August 2020. Kirkpatrick's evaluation framework was used to categorize outcomes, and the Simulation-Based Research Extension for the CONSORT statement was used to appraise the quality of simulation reporting. The search revealed 6584 unique abstracts with 321 full-text articles reviewed. Forty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria. This review has shown a clear trend toward using simulation within or immediately before the professional practice placements of allied health programs. Using Kirkpatrick's evaluation framework, most studies reported on student reaction (level 1) and learning (level 2) obtained during the simulation experience. There was limited evidence showing how the benefits gained in simulation translated to the clinical environment (level 3) or impacted the organization (level 4). Further research is required to review the optimal proximity of simulation to allied health professional placements and how gains are obtained from simulation transition to the clinical environment. In addition, more consistent reporting of simulation methodologies and evaluation methods are needed to strengthen the evidence base.

Condition indices are key predictors of health and fitness in wild fish populations. Variation in body condition, therefore, can be used to identify stressful conditions that may impact endangered species, such as California’s endemic Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus McAllister, 1963). Here, we examined spatiotemporal variation in the condition indices of > 1600 Delta Smelt collected over nine years (2011–2019), a period characterized by tremendous variability in hydrodynamic and water quality conditions. The population exhibited low hepatosomatic index (HSI) and condition factor (CF) during September/October/November (fall), and both condition indices declined over the nine-year study during fall. HSI was positively correlated with indicators of pelagic productivity (e.g., Chlorophyll a, zooplankton biomass, and proximity to tidal wetlands), whereas CF was negatively correlated with temperature, peaking at a relatively cool 10–13°C. In sum, seasonal and interannual variation in body condition corresponded most strongly with pelagic productivity and water temperature, with little correlation to freshwater outflow. Management actions that increase pelagic productivity, restore and freshen productive wetlands during late summer-fall, and reduce water temperatures overall are likely to benefit condition indices and, therefore, fitness of the Delta Smelt population.

Intentional introductions of non-native fishes can severely affect native communities. Wakasagi (Hypomesus nipponensis, referred to as Japanese Pond Smelt) are native to Japan and were once separated from their non-native congener the endangered Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) of the San Francisco Estuary (hereon “estuary”) of California. Wakasagi were introduced into California reservoirs in the 20th century as forage fish. Wakasagi have since expanded their distribution downstream to the estuary, but less is known about Wakasagi’s current distribution status, biology in the estuary, and negative influences on Delta Smelt. In this study, we took a comparative approach by synthesizing long-term field monitoring surveys, modeling environmental associations, and quantifying phenology, growth, and diets of Wakasagi and Delta Smelt to describe abundance and range, trends of co-occurrence, and shared ecological roles between smelt species. We found Wakasagi in greatest abundance in the upper watershed below source reservoirs, and in the northern regions of the estuary with the most co-occurrence with Delta Smelt; however, their range extends to western regions of the estuary, and we found evidence of an established population that annually spawns and rears in the estuary. We found these smelt species have similar ecological roles demonstrated by overlaps in habitat use (e.g., an association with higher turbidities and higher outflow), phenology, growth, and diets. Despite similarities, earlier hatching and rearing of Wakasagi during cooler months and reduced growth during warmer drought years suggest this species is unlike typical non-natives (e.g., Centrarchids), and they exhibit a similar sensitivity to environmental variability as Delta Smelt. This sensitivity may be why Wakasagi abundance remains relatively low in the estuary.

Viral genomic surveillance has been integral in the global response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Surveillance efforts rely on the availability of representative clinical specimens from ongoing testing activities. However, testing practices have recently shifted due to the widespread availability and use of rapid antigen tests, which could lead to gaps in future monitoring efforts. As such, genomic surveillance strategies must adapt to include laboratory workflows that are robust to sample type. To that end, we compare the results of RT-qPCR and viral genome sequencing using samples from positive BinaxNOW™ COVID-19 Antigen Card swabs (N=555) to those obtained from previously collected nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs used for nucleic acid amplification testing (N=135). We show that swabs obtained from antigen cards are comparable in performance to clinical excess samples from NP swabs, providing a viable alternative. This validation permits the reliable expansion of viral genomic surveillance to cases identified in the clinic or home setting where rapid antigen tests are used.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a flexible framework for supporting a wide variety of learners. We report here on a conference that presented the UDL framework as a way to increase success of deaf and hard-of-hearing (deaf/hh) students in introductory biology courses. The Opening the Pathway conference was an NSF Advanced Technological Education project focusing on raising awareness about careers in biotechnology and student success in introductory biology, a key gateway course for careers in biotechnology. The participants were professionals who work with deaf/hh students at pivotal points in students' educational pathways for raising awareness of biotechnology career options, including community college faculty, high school faculty at schools for the deaf, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. The conference goal was to provide an effective, meaningful professional development experience in biology instruction. The conference explicitly addressed the role of a UDL approach in building accessible, inclusive, productive learning environments, particularly for deaf/hh students, and demonstrated how to make effective pedagogical practices, specifically case-based learning, inclusive and UDL-aligned in an introductory biology context. We describe the conference, conference outcomes for participants, and in particular the application of the UDL framework to create an inclusive experience.

Here, we analyzed juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) bycatch data that has been collected by the recently established Enhanced Delta Smelt Monitoring program (EDSM), a survey designed to estimate the abundance and distribution of the San Francisco Estuary’s (estuary) endangered Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus). Two key aspects of the EDSM program distinguish it from other fish surveys in the estuary: a stratified random sampling design and the spatial scale of its sampling effort. We integrated the EDSM data set with other existing surveys in the estuary, and used an occupancy model to assess differences in the probability of detecting Delta Smelt across gear types. We saw no large-scale differences in size selectivity, and while detection probability varied among gear types, cumulative detection probability for EDSM was comparable to other surveys because of the program’s use of replicate tows. Based on our occupancy model and sampling effort in the estuary during spring of 2017 and 2018, we highlighted under-sampled regions that saw improvements in monitoring coverage from EDSM. Our analysis also revealed that each sampling method has its own benefits and constraints. Although the use of random sites with replicates, as conducted by EDSM, can provide more statistically robust abundance estimates relative to traditional methods, the use of fixed stations and simple methods such as beach seining may provide a more cost-effective way to monitor salmon occurrence in certain regions of the estuary. Leveraging the strengths of each survey’s method can enable stronger inferences on salmon abundance and distribution. Careful consideration of these trade-offs is crucial as the management agencies of the estuary continue to adapt and improve their monitoring programs.

Universal design for learning (UDL) must continue to address questions of classroom quality but also push beyond the classroom to look at other parts of the system that when designed for one size fits all or even one size fits some prevent talented students from entering and persisting in higher education. This chapter examines affordability, quality, and belonging to illustrate how much student variability there is in each of these issues and highlight a range of responses that could become part of a more flexible and universally designed higher education.

The fish community of San Francisco Estuary is no exception, as the estuary has been recognized as one of the most invaded on the planet and the system has been impacted significantly by these invasions. Here, we summarize the introduction and probable establishment of a new species in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, the Bluefin Killifish (Lucania goodei), as discovered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service Delta Juvenile Fish Monitoring Program (DJFMP). The DJFMP has conducted a large-scale beach seine survey since 1976, and it is the longest-running monitoring program in the San Francisco Estuary that extensively monitors the shallow-water nearshore habitat. Possibly introduced as discarded aquarium fish within the vicinity of the Delta Cross Channel, Bluefin Killifish is a close relative of the Rainwater Killifish (Lucania parva), another non-native fish species that has been present in the San Francisco Estuary system for decades. Studies in their native range suggest that Bluefin Killifish will fill a similar niche to Rainwater Killifish, albeit with a more freshwater distribution. The potential ecological impact of Bluefin Killifish remains unclear in the absence of additional studies. However, we have been able to track the spread of the species within the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta through the existence of long-term monitoring programs. Our findings demonstrate the value of monitoring across various habitats for the early detection and proactive management of invasive species.

A greater focus on providing high quality career training programs could help address high levels of youth unemployment, inequitable access to well-paying jobs, under developed talent within the youth population, and labor shortages across numerous industries worldwide (Symonds, Schwartz, & Ferguson, 2011; Lerman, 2012). The issue of youth and graduate employability has become a significant issue for postsecondary education providers worldwide. Fourteen percent of young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine in OECD countries are neither employed, nor in education or training (OECD, 2018). The focus of this article is on the learning needs of young people that pursue postsecondary education outside of traditional two- and four-year colleges and universities, through career training programs such as industry recognized certificate programs and pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. This chapter considers how to apply the Universal Design for Learning principles and guidelines to postsecondary education in the form of career training programs. The chapter first addresses the need for high quality program design in career training programs, especially ones that enroll youth who have not been successful with traditional “one size fits all” approaches to education. Second, given that UDL was originally conceived to support inclusion of learners with disabilities in the traditional K-12 school model, the chapter considers how the four components of a curriculum in UDL – goals, methods, materials and assessments – might be reframed within career training programs.

This paper describes the development of a service delivery model for families within a disability context. The design approach makes use of action research methodology (Carson & Sumara, 1997) and is a collaborative exercise and a work in progress.

As permafrost degrades, the amount of organic soil carbon (C) that thaws during the growing season will increase, but decomposition may be limited by saturated soil conditions common in high-latitude ecosystems. However, in some areas, soil drying is expected to accompany permafrost thaw as a result of increased water drainage, which may enhance C release to the atmosphere. We examined the effects of ecosystem warming, permafrost thaw, and soil moisture changes on C balance in an upland tundra ecosystem. This study was conducted at a water table drawdown experiment, established in 2011 and located within the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research project, an ecosystem warming and permafrost thawing experiment in Alaska. Warming and drying increased cumulative growing season ecosystem respiration by ~20% over 3 years of this experiment. Warming caused an almost twofold increase in decomposition of a common substrate in surface soil (0–10 cm) across all years, and drying caused a twofold increase in decomposition (0–20 cm) relative to control after 3 years of drying. Decomposition of older C increased in the dried and in the combined warmed + dried plots based on soil pore space 14CO2. Although upland tundra systems have been considered CH4 sinks, warming and ground thaw significantly increased CH4 emission rates. Water table depth was positively correlated with monthly respiration and negatively correlated with CH4 emission rates. These results demonstrate that warming and drying may increase loss of old permafrost C from tundra ecosystems, but the form and magnitude of C released to the atmosphere will be driven by changes in soil moisture.

SUMMARYAn evaluation of the genetic diversity within Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) may provide an insight into its potential to respond to environmental changes, such as anthelmintic use or climate change. In this study, we determined the mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of >400 flukes from 29 individual cattle, from 2 farms in the Netherlands, as an exemplar of fasciolosis in a European context. Analysis of this dataset has provided us with a measure of the genetic variation within infrapopulations (individual hosts) and the diversity between infrapopulations within a herd of cattle. Temporal sampling from one farm allowed for the measurement of the stability of genetic variation at a single location, whilst the comparison between the two farms provided information on the variation in relation to distance and previous anthelmintic regimes. We showed that the liver fluke population in this region is predominantly linked to 2 distinct clades. Individual infrapopulations contain a leptokurtic distribution of genetically diverse flukes. The haplotypes present on a farm have been shown to change significantly over a relatively short time-period.

This paper reviews recent developments at the intersection between culture—nature and animal geographies debates in order to consider the ways in which issues of anthropomorphism and beastliness have beset attempts to write the nonhuman. Seeking to move beyond the theoretical impasse that these two concepts have engendered, the paper explores engagement with the concept of dwelling developed by Ingold as a possible theoretical tool for a re-animated animal geography, one which seeks to take its cue from those individuals and groups whose lives depend on and are embedded in their daily connections and understandings with nonhumans.

While financial institutions have had relatively little success in overcoming the risks and costs of lending to agriculture, rising food prices and shortages have made it imperative to find better ways of increasing financial flows in support of increased agricultural production and marketing. Direct value chain finance transactions operate with the same logic as any other financial transaction. The lender must engage in some form of client screening, client monitoring and contract enforcement. To successfully accomplish these tasks, direct value chain lenders can use information gained through their value chain relationships about their clients and their clients’ businesses. The value chain governance structure influences how easily and successfully a value chain lender can accomplish these tasks. Little is known about general practitioners' confidence and competence in managing medical emergencies, yet these qualities are vital to maximise patients' chances of survival.To document the distribution and determinants of GPs' self reported levels of comfort and competence in managing medical emergencies, and GPs' interest in attending an emergency skills update course.We conducted a random sample survey of 900 GPs in current clinical practice in southeast Queensland.Five hundred and twelve (57%) GPs responded to the questionnaire. An association between perceived levels of competence and the amount of training GPs received was demonstrated (P00.05 for 14 of 16 listed emergency skills), as was an association between level of comfort in managing emergencies and the frequency with which such emergency types are encountered in practice (P0.05 for 8 of 18 listed emergencies). Sixty-nine percent of GPs expressed interest in attending a specifically designed emergency medicine update course.Postgraduate training in and experience with medical emergencies is important for GPs' confidence and competence in dealing with such emergencies. A proposed update course designed specifically for GPs was strongly supported.

Deep breathing and ambulation are used by physiotherapists for patients after surgery, however the precise effects of these on ventilation have not been investigated. This study was designed to compare the effects of deep breathing and ambulation on pattern of breathing in patients after upper abdominal surgery. A similar increase was found in minute ventilation, however the pattern of breathing seen during each treatment was very different. During the deep breathing exercises patients had large, significant increases in tidal volume (mean change 488.5ml), while respiratory rate decreased non-significantly. By comparison, ambulation caused small and non-significant increases in both tidal volume (163.4ml) and respiratory rate. It appears that if one of the aims of ambulation is to increase tidal volume, patients may need to be encouraged to augment their tidal volumes.
