Accelerated warming and a decline in sea ice coverage in the summertime Arctic Ocean can significantly affect the emissions of marine organic aerosols and biogenic volatile organic compounds. However, how these changes affect the characteristics of atmospheric water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), which plays an important role in the climate system, remains unclear. Thus, to improve our understanding of WSOC characteristics, including its summertime fluorescence characteristics, in the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean, we simultaneously measured atmospheric concentrations of ionic species and WSOC, fluorescence excitation–emission matrix coupled with parallel factor (EEM–PARAFAC) analysis of WSOC, and marine biological parameters in surface seawaters of the western Arctic Ocean during the summer of 2016. WSOC was predominantly present as fine-mode aerosols (diameter < 2.5 μm) (median = 92 %) with the mean concentration being higher in the coastal water areas (462 ± 130 ngC m−3) than in the sea ice-covered areas (242 ± 88.4 ngC m−3). Moreover, the WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols was positively correlated with the methanesulfonic acid in the fine-mode aerosol samples collected over the sea ice-covered areas (r = 0.88, p < 0.01, n = 10), suggesting high sea–air gas exchange and emissions of aerosol precursor gases due to sea ice retreat and increasing available solar radiation during the Arctic summer. Two fluorescent components, humic-like C1 and protein-like C2, were identified by the PARAFAC modeling of fine-mode atmospheric WSOC. The two components varied regionally between coastal and sea ice-covered areas, with low and high fluorescence intensities observed over the coastal areas and sea ice-covered areas, respectively. Further, the humification index of WSOC was correlated with the fluorescence intensity ratio of the humic-like C1/protein-like C2 (r = 0.89, p < 0.01) and the WSOC concentration in the fine-mode aerosols (r = 0.66, p < 0.05), with the highest values observed in the coastal areas. Additionally, the WSOC concentration in the fine-mode aerosols was positively correlated with the fluorescence intensity ratio of the humic-like C1/protein-like C2 (r = 0.77, p < 0.01), but was negatively correlated to the biological index (r = −0.69, p < 0.01). Overall, these results suggested that the WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols in the coastal areas showed a higher degree of polycondensation and higher aromaticity compared that in the sea ice-covered areas, where WSOC in the fine-mode aerosols was associated with relatively new, less oxygenated, and biologically-derived secondary organic components. The findings can improve our understanding of the chemical and biological linkages of WSOC at the ocean–sea ice–atmosphere interface.

The Green Edge project was designed to investigate the onset, life and fate of a phytoplankton spring bloom (PSB) in the Arctic Ocean. The lengthening of the ice-free period and the warming of seawater, amongst other factors, have induced major changes in arctic ocean biology over the last decades. Because the PSB is at the base of the Arctic Ocean food chain, it is crucial to understand how changes in the arctic environment will affect it. Green Edge was a large multidisciplinary collaborative project bringing researchers and technicians from 28 different institutions in seven countries, together aiming at understanding these changes and their impacts into the future. The fieldwork for the Green Edge project took place over two years (2015 and 2016) and was carried out from both an ice-camp and a research vessel in the Baffin Bay, canadian arctic. This paper describes the sampling strategy and the data set obtained from the research cruise, which took place aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen in spring 2016. International audience; Monounsaturated fatty acids and their oxidation products were quantified in surficial sediments (0–1 cm) dominated by sympagic (ice-associated) material released at the end of the ice melt collected in summer in central and eastern Baffin Bay during the 2016 GreenEdge campaign. Sympagic algae preservation towards bacterial mineralization was monitored based on intact and oxidized C16:1ω7 (palmitoleic) acid, and oxidation products of C18:1ω7 (vaccenic) and C16:1ω5 acids provided insights on the photooxidative and autoxidative alterations of bacteria present in these sediment samples. Preservation of sympagic algal material appeared to be highest at the stations that were relatively unaffected by copepod grazing and that contained strongly autoxidized (and thus inactive) bacteria. Analysis of sinking particles collected with a drifting trap showed an intense flux of highly photooxidized ice algae in early July that was dominated by Navicula spp. and associated with bacteria that had also been strongly altered by photooxidative processes. It is proposed that subsequent homolytic decomposition of the hydroperoxides resulting from this intense photooxidation may have driven the strong autoxidation of sympagic algae and bacteria observed in the sediments. The lack of colonization of sympagic material by active benthic bacteria observed at some of the stations investigated was attributed to its high content in deleterious autoxidative hydroperoxides and free fatty acids (reaching for example 107% and 22% of residual palmitoleic acid, respectively, at station 605)

Satellite‐derived data suggest an increase in annual primary production following the loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. The scarcity of field data to corroborate this enhanced algal production incited a collaborative project combining six annual cycles of sequential sediment trap measurements obtained over a 17‐year period in the Eurasian Arctic Ocean. Here we present microalgal fluxes measured at ~200 m to reflect the bulk of algal carbon production. Ice algae contributed to a large proportion of the microalgal carbon export before complete ice melt and possible detection of their production by satellites. In the northern Laptev Sea, annual microalgal carbon fluxes were lower during the 2007 minimum ice extent than in 2006. In 2012, early snowmelt led to early microalgal carbon flux in the Nansen Basin. Hence, a change in the timing of snowmelt and ice algae release may affect productivity and export over the Arctic basins.

The unprecedented pace of warming of the Arctic Ocean affects a wide range of pelagic processes, from primary production to fish recruitment. Sequential sediment traps deployed on oceanographic moorings at the Beaufort Sea shelf break were used to investigate the impact of variations in physical conditions on the phenology of microalgae and herbivorous copepods. Water temperature, salinity, microalgal fluxes, and zooplankton fluxes were monitored over 6 of the 7 annual cycles from September 2009 to September 2016 with a hiatus from September 2013 to August 2014. Satellite-derived sea ice concentration and snow depth were retrieved for the same period. For 5 of the 6 cycles, a consistent interval between the vernal abundance of the Calanus species (C. glacialis and C. hyperboreus), the export of the ice alga Nitzschia frigida, and peak in nauplii abundance and diatom export, reflected a match between microalgae and herbivorous copepods. Drastic changes in water temperatures and ice conditions during the 2012–2013 cycle affected this synchronization. In 2012, the record sea ice minimum extent led to anomalously high upper water temperatures during autumn and winter that led to a shoaling of the vertical distribution of C. hyperboreus females and to the production of their nauplii at shallower depths several weeks before diatom export. Due to several oceanic and atmospheric forcing, the record sea ice minimum extent was followed in 2013 by a rebound in ice cover that delayed snowmelt, sea ice melt, and ice algae export. This delay resulted in a mismatch between C. glacialis females and N. frigida fluxes and in fewer C. glacialis nauplii in June and July 2013. These mismatch events likely had a negative impact on Calanus recruitment and on the subsequent transfer of energy to carnivorous zooplankton and fish. It is crucial to maintain mooring deployments to accurately assess the wide range of effects of climate warming on the marine ecosystems.

Two mooring arrays carrying sediment traps were deployed from September 2011 to August 2012 at ∼83°N on each side of the Gakkel Ridge in the Nansen and Amundsen Basins to measure downward particle flux below the euphotic zone (approx. 250 m) and approximately 150 m above seafloor at approximately 3500 and 4000 m depth, respectively. In a region that still experiences nearly complete ice cover throughout the year, export fluxes of total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), biogenic matter, lithogenic matter, biogenic particulate silica (bPSi), calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), protists and biomarkers only slightly decreased with depth. Seasonal variations of particulate matter fluxes were similar on both sides of the Gakkel Ridge. Somewhat higher export rates in the Amundsen Basin and differences in the composition of the sinking TPM and bPSi on each side of the Gakkel Ridge probably reflected the influence of the Lena River/Transpolar Drift in the Amundsen Basin and the influence of Atlantic water in the Nansen Basin. Low variations in particle export with depth revealed a limited influence of lateral advection in the deep barren Eurasian Basin. Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean (AO) has been undergoing dramatic changes during the last two decades. In addition, the water temperature of the inflow of Atlantic water masses at the gateway Fram Strait has recently increased. Long-term data may help to evaluate the impact of these physical changes on the biological processes in surface waters. Over a 25-year period, and mostly in summer, water samples were collected at discrete depths within the uppermost 100 m of the Fram Strait and other regions of the AO to investigate chlorophyll a (Chl a) and particulate organic carbon (POC) standing stocks. Stations sampled from 1991 to 2015 were located in the Fram Strait, Barents Sea (BS), on the Eurasian shelf, and over the Nansen, Amundsen, and parts of the Amerasian basins (AB). Discrete Chl a and POC measurements obtained during 33 and 24 expeditions, respectively, were integrated over the upper 100 m of the water column to monitor spatial and interannual variations in distribution patterns of standing stocks. In general, the highest Chl a and POC standing stocks were observed in the eastern Fram Strait (EFS) and in the BS, while the lowest biomasses were observed in the heavily ice-covered regions of the central AO, mainly in the Amundsen and ABs. Whereas summertime Chl a stocks sharply decreased northward from the Fram Strait and Barents Sea toward high latitudes, the decline in POC standing stocks was less pronounced. Over the sampling period, summertime Chl a stocks slightly increased in the EFS but remained more or less constant in the central AO. In contrast to Chl a, standing stocks of POC eventually increased over the last 25 years in the central AO, possibly as an effect of increasing air temperatures, decreasing sea ice extent and thickness, and increasing light availability. Moreover, variations in riverine discharge and in sea ice export within the Transpolar Drift may have contributed to the enhanced POC stock in the central AO surface waters. Overall, the objective of the present study was to provide baseline datasets of Chl a and POC to better track the effects of environmental changes due to global warming on the Arctic pelagic system.

Background Evidence suggests that pathophysiological conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are associated with morphologic and metabolic alterations in the small intestinal mucosa. Exploring these alterations generally requires invasive methods, limiting data acquisition to subjects with enteropathies or undergoing bariatric surgery. We aimed to evaluate small intestine epithelial cell homeostasis in a cohort of men covering a wide range of adiposity and glucose homoeostasis statuses. Methods Plasma levels of citrulline, a biomarker of enterocyte mass, and I-FABP, a biomarker of enterocyte death, were measured by UHPLC‑MS and ELISA in 154 nondiabetic men and 67 men with a T2D diagnosis. Results Plasma citrulline was significantly reduced in men with insulin resistance and T2D compared to insulin sensitive men. Decreased citrulline levels were, however, not observed in men with uncontrolled metabolic parameters during T2D. Plasma I-FABP was significantly higher in men with T2D, especially in presence of uncontrolled glycemic and lipid profile parameters. Integration of both parameters, which estimate enterocyte turnover, was associated with glucose homeostasis as well as with T2D diagnosis. Differences in biomarkers levels were independent of age and BMI and glucose filtration rates. Conclusions Our study supports a decreased functional enterocyte mass and an increased enterocyte death rate in presence of metabolic alterations but emphasizes that epithelial cell homeostasis is especially altered in presence of severe insulin resistance and T2D. The marked changes in small intestine cellularity observed in obesity and diabetes are thus suggested to be part of gut dysfunctions, mainly at an advanced stage of the disease.

Studies of dinoflagellate cysts or ciliates in sediment traps provide essential information on weekly, monthly, seasonal, annual, and/or multi-annual changes in their fluxes in relation to measured or implied environmental parameters. Such information is essential for understanding ecological preferences of individual taxa which is the foundation for performing reliable (paleo)environmental high-resolution regional reconstructions. Up to date, sediment trap studies are rare, and only three of those deal with dinoflagellate cysts production in ice-covered conditions: in Antarctic waters (Harland and Pudsey, 1999); Arctic fjords in the Svalbard archipelago (Howe et al., 2010); and Hudson Bay (Heikkilä et al., 2016). All these studies consistently show a very limited or no cyst recovery from the samples that were collected during the ice-covered intervals. However, the timing of individual species production (e.g. cysts of Pentapharsodinium dalei, Islandinium minutum, and Spiniferites elongatus) within the ice-free condition is inconsistent as it varies from region to region. In this session, we will present our preliminary results on dinoflagellate cyst continuous bi-weekly record at the Beaufort Sea shelf break from September 2014 to August 2015.

Unusually warm conditions recently observed in the Pacific Arctic region included a dramatic loss of sea ice cover and an enhanced inflow of warmer Pacific-derived waters. Moored sediment traps deployed at three biological hotspots of the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) during this anomalously warm period collected sinking particles nearly continuously from June 2017 to July 2019 in the northern Bering Sea (DBO2) and in the southern Chukchi Sea (DBO3), and from August 2018 to July 2019 in the northern Chukchi Sea (DBO4). Fluxes of living algal cells, chlorophyll a (chl a), total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic carbon (POC), and zooplankton fecal pellets, along with zooplankton and meroplankton collected in the traps, were used to evaluate spatial and temporal variations in the development and composition of the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in relation to sea ice cover and water temperature. The unprecedented sea ice loss of 2018 in the northern Bering Sea led to the export of a large bloom dominated by the exclusively pelagic diatoms Chaetoceros spp. at DBO2. Despite this intense bloom, early sea ice breakup resulted in shorter periods of enhanced chl a and diatom fluxes at all DBO sites, suggesting a weaker biological pump under reduced ice cover in the Pacific Arctic region, while the coincident increase or decrease in TPM and POC fluxes likely reflected variations in resuspension events. Meanwhile, the highest transport of warm Pacific waters during 2017–2018 led to a dominance of the small copepods Pseudocalanus at all sites. Whereas the export of ice-associated diatoms during 2019 suggested a return to more typical conditions in the northern Bering Sea, the impact on copepods persisted under the continuously enhanced transport of warm Pacific waters. Regardless, the biological pump remained strong on the shallow Pacific Arctic shelves.

An assessment of the production, distribution and fate of highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) biomarkers produced by sea ice and pelagic diatoms is necessary to interpret their detection and proportions in the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. HBIs measured in surface sediments collected from 2012 to 2017 were used to determine the distribution and seasonality of the biomarkers relative to sea ice patterns. A northward gradient of increasing ice algae deposition was observed with localized occurrences of elevated IP25 (sympagic HBI) concentrations from 68-70°N and consistently strong sympagic signatures from 71-72.5°N. A declining sympagic signature was observed from 2012 to 2017 in the northeast Chukchi Sea, coincident with declining sea ice concentrations. HBI fluxes were investigated on the northeast Chukchi shelf with a moored sediment trap deployed from August 2015 to July 2016. Fluxes of sea ice exclusive diatoms (Nitzschia frigida and Melosira arctica) and HBI-producing taxa (Pleurosigma, Haslea and Rhizosolenia spp.) were measured to confirm HBI sources and ice associations. IP25 was detected year-round, increasing in March 2016 (10 ng m-2 d-1) and reaching a maximum in July 2016 (1331 ng m-2 d-1). Snowmelt triggered the release of sea ice algae into the water column in May 2016, while under-ice pelagic production contributed to the diatom export in June and July 2016. Sea ice diatom fluxes were strongly correlated with the IP25 flux, however associations between pelagic diatoms and HBI fluxes were inconclusive. Bioturbation likely facilitates sustained burial of sympagic organic matter on the shelf despite the occurrence of pelagic diatom blooms. These results suggest that sympagic diatoms may sustain the food web through winter on the northeast Chukchi shelf. The reduced relative proportions of sympagic HBIs in the northern Bering Sea are likely driven by sea ice persistence in the region.

A multi-institutional initiative was created in a context of potential oil exploration at the Old Harry site to monitor the marine ecosystem and manage resources of the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL). As part of this initiative, two sediment traps were deployed at depths of 34 m and 100 m at a site northwest of Cabot Strait in the Laurentian Channel to measure downward carbon fluxes from October 2014 to October 2015. Fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC), biogenic silica (BSi), chloropigments, protists and zooplankton fecal pellets were used to evaluate vertical and temporal changes in the magnitude and composition of biogenic carbon fluxes and to provide baseline information prior to any exploration activities in the region. Peaks in POC, BSi, chloropigment and diatom fluxes at both depths at the end of April 2015 indicated the rapid export of a locally-produced bloom mainly composed of pennate diatoms. A coincident peak in fecal pellet carbon fluxes at 100 m indicated a match between the spring ascent of copepods and the diatom bloom. The distinct composition of protist fluxes at 34 and 100 m following the formation of the winter mixed layer highlighted the influence of the pycnocline as a physical barrier for the export of particles in the region. Among identifiable components, dinoflagellates and fecal pellets, followed by diatoms and foraminifera, contributed most to the annual POC flux at 100 m, indicating a balance between lateral advection of slow-sinking protists and rapid export of fast-sinking diatoms and fecal pellets in the supply of POC toward the seafloor in the GSL. These measurements of biogenic carbon export provide insight into the fate of large and small particles in the Cabot Strait region to consider in the potential development of oil and gas activities.

Time-series sediment traps were deployed at 4 depths in the eastern Fram Strait from July 2007 to June 2008 to investigate variations in the magnitude and composition of the sinking particulate matter from upper waters to the seafloor. Sediment traps were deployed at 196 m in the Atlantic Water layer, at 1296 and 2364 m in the intermediate and deep waters, and at 2430 m on a benthic lander in the near-bottom layer. Fluxes of total particulate matter, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen, biogenic matter, lithogenic matter, biogenic particulate silica, calcium carbonate, dominant phytoplankton cells, and zooplankton fecal pellets increased with depth, indicating the importance of lateral advection on fluxes in the deep Fram Strait. The lateral supply of particulate matter was further supported by the constant fluxes of biomarkers such as brassicasterol, alkenones, campesterol, β-sitosterol, and IP25 at all depths sampled. However, enhanced fluxes of diatoms and appendicularian fecal pellets from the upper waters to the seafloor in the presence of ice during spring indicated the rapid export (15–35 days) of locally-produced large particles that likely contributed most of the food supply to the benthic communities. These results show that lateral supply and downward fluxes are both important processes influencing the transport of particulate matter to the seafloor in the deep eastern Fram Strait, and that particulate matter size dictates the prevailing sinking process.

00003 ăWOS:000384551800005; International audience; The marine ecosystem of Kongsfjorden experiences large variations in primary productivity due to pronounced seasonal variations in sunlight, glacier melt, and ice cover. The objective of this study was to assess spatial and seasonal variability in the downward export of biogenic matter in Kongsfjorden. Short-term sediment traps were deployed for periods ranging from 21 to 52 h at three stations from the inner fjord to the outer fjord in May, August, and October 2012 and at one mid-fjord station in January 2013. Total particulate matter, particulate organic carbon, phytoplankton cells, chlorophyll a, biogenic particulate silica, and zooplankton fecal pellet fluxes were measured to determine the magnitude and composition of the material exported in the fjord. The amount and composition of export fluxes reflected a large phytoplankton bloom grazed upon by zooplankton in May, the melting of glaciers and the intrusion of Atlantic Water in August, the end of the glacier melt period in October, and the polar night in January. Overall, seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community impacted export efficiency in the fjord, directly through phytoplankton sinking and indirectly through zooplankton grazing. Results obtained in this study may reflect the magnitude and composition of export fluxes to expect in coming years in Kongsfjorden, especially under conditions of warmer Atlantic Water and longer glacier melt periods.

Microalgal cells collected with moored sediment traps deployed during three to five annual cycles at three sites in the Beaufort Sea were identified to investigate variations in the timing, abundance and composition of microalgal fluxes in relation to snow and sea ice cover. The investigation period encompassed two extremes in snow and sea ice conditions: a delayed melt due to an ice rebound in 2013 and a premature snowmelt and sea ice breakup that led to an ice-free Beaufort Sea in 2016. Diatoms dominated the microalgal fluxes, with the pelagic centric diatoms Thalassiosira spp. and the ice-associated pennate diatoms Fragilariopsis spp. consistently collected at the three sites. The export of the ice-obligated algae Nitzschia frigida indicated the release of sea ice algae at the onset of snowmelt. Early snowmelt and sea ice breakup in 2016 contributed to an early start of ice algae release accompanied with early peaks in diatom fluxes and higher diatom and phytoplankton carbon (PPC) fluxes during spring and summer. Conversely, delayed sea ice algae release, low diatom fluxes, and low PPC fluxes were observed when snowmelt and sea ice breakup occurred late over the Mackenzie shelf break. The amount of diatoms exported at ~100–300 m also likely depended on a match or mismatch between algal production and zooplankton grazing. Variations in the snow and sea ice regimes at the regional scale therefore directly impact the timing and magnitude of microalgal export and its contribution to particulate organic carbon flux in the Arctic Ocean. With global warming, the ongoing sea ice reduction in the Arctic Ocean may increase PPC fluxes to the seafloor and potential carbon sequestration at depth.

Seasonal cycles of primary production and freshwater run-off contribute to elevated particulate matter fluxes of marine and terrestrial origin in fjords. In Norwegian fjords, aquaculture operations and jellyfish carcasses may further enhance these particulate matter fluxes. In this study, sediment traps were deployed in four Norwegian fjords (Lurefjorden, Masfjorden, Hardangerfjorden and Kaldfjorden) to quantify seasonal variations in downward particle fluxes and to investigate the contribution of aquaculture operations to these fluxes. Sediment traps were deployed in Lurefjorden, a fjord heavily populated by the deep-sea coronate medusae Periphylla periphylla, in Masfjorden, a nearby fjord without mass occurrence of P. periphylla, in Hardangerfjorden, a fjord with high density of salmon farms, and in Kaldfjorden, a northern fjord also hosting aquaculture activities. Measurements of total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic carbon (POC), chlorophyll a (chl a), and diatom fluxes indicated the export of a diatom bloom starting in March or April and a large input of land-derived inorganic matter during rain and snowmelt events in all fjords sampled. The highest annual POC flux was recorded in the nearly landlocked Lurefjorden. In Hardangerfjorden, export fluxes suggested a local impact of aquaculture operations but freshwater run-off and water exchange had a larger influence on export fluxes than the release of aquaculture waste. In Kaldfjorden, nearly absent TPM, POC, chl a, and diatom fluxes in late spring-early summer suggested that strong stratification prevented the export of particulate matter to depth. Overall, sediment trap-derived fluxes reflected the spatial and temporal variations in the sources of particulate matter in Norwegian fjords.

The Chukchi Ecosystem Observatory (CEO), a mooring array of subsurface oceanographic instruments, was established on the northeast Chukchi Sea continental shelf to obtain time-series measurements of physical, biogeochemical, and biological parameters. A sequential sediment trap was deployed on a CEO mooring 8 m above seafloor to measure export fluxes of chlorophyll a (chl a), microalgal cells, zooplankton fecal pellets, total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic carbon (POC), and zooplankton actively entering the trap from August 2015 to July 2016. These time-series measurements allowed us to monitor sympagic and pelagic algal production, the seasonal development of the zooplankton community, pelagic-benthic coupling, and particulate matter export in relation to snow and sea-ice cover on the shallow Chukchi Sea continental shelf. Notably, chl a and algal fluxes were nearly as high from August to October 2015 as in June–July 2016, indicating substantial autumn production. Autumn algal fluxes were dominated by the epipelic Cylindrotheca closterium while summer fluxes were dominated by pennate diatoms, including Fossula arctica and Neodenticula seminae. Peaks in the export of the exclusively sympagic diatom Nitzschia frigida in May and June 2016 indicated the release of ice algae due to snow and ice melt events. While pelagic copepods Calanus glacialis/marshallae, Pseudocalanus spp. and Oithona similis were the dominant copepods collected in the sediment trap, meroplanktonic stages of benthic organisms displayed the largest abundances and reflected mixing of pelagic stages and resuspension events on the shallow Chukchi Sea shelf. Enhanced fecal pellet carbon fluxes reflected zooplankton grazing in August and September 2015 and in July 2016. Despite the grazing pressure, high chl a, diatom and POC fluxes during these periods allowed strong pelagic-benthic coupling in the northeast Chukchi Sea. Persistent summer and autumn production also suggest that the local benthic community benefits from a sustained food supply rather than episodic flux events. Overall, these observations demonstrate the importance of year-round monitoring for fully understanding the phenology of marine processes and set a baseline for understanding the impact of environmental changes on Arctic marine ecosystems.

While cold temperatures and 8 months of sea ice cover present challenging conditions for the operation of the CEO, this extreme environment also serves as a rigorous test bed for innovative ecosystem monitoring strategies. Here, we present data from the 2015–2016 CEO deployments that provide new perspectives on the seasonal evolution of sea ice, water column structure, and physical properties, annual cycles in nitrate, dissolved oxygen, phytoplankton blooms, and export, zooplankton abundance and vertical migration, the occurrence of Arctic cod, and vocalizations of marine mammals such as bearded seals. These integrated ecosystem observations are being combined with ship-based observations and modeling to produce a time series that documents biological community responses to changing seasonal sea ice and water temperatures while establishing a scientific basis for ecosystem management.

International audience; Degradation of palmitoleic acid (C 16:1x7), the main fatty acid component of sea ice-associated (sympagic) diatoms, was monitored in Arctic sea ice at the beginning of ice melting and in the underlying sinking particles and superficial bottom sediments. In sea ice, degradation of sympagic algae involved biotic oxidation induced by 10S-DOX-like lipoxygenase of unknown salinity-stressed attached bacteria, while photo-and autoxidation were limited. In the water column, strong hydratase and Z/E isomerase activity were observed. Hydration of unsaturated fatty acids seems to be a detoxification strategy, which is essential for bacterial survival when associated with free fatty acid-rich environments such as ice algae. In contrast, Z/E isomerisation of palmitoleic acid was attributed to the release of Fe 2+ ions during radical-induced damage of the active site of the bacterial 10S-DOX-like lipoxygenase and Z/E isomerases. Due to the poor physiological state of their attached bacteria resulting from salinity stress in brine channels or toxicity of free ice algae fatty acids, sympagic algae appeared to be only very weakly biotically degraded within the water column. In bottom sediments, free radicals resulting from 10S-DOX-like lipoxygenase activity induced a strong autoxidation of the ice algal material. The presence in bottom sediments of a significant proportion of oxidation products resulting from 10S-DOX-like lipoxygenase activity attested to the strong contribution of sea ice-derived OM released during the early stages of ice melt prior to depo-sition in the sediments. However, on the basis of the highest fatty acid photooxidation state observed in these sediments, an additional contribution of highly photooxidized material (ice algal material released at the end of ice melting or open water phytoplankton) seems likely. The degradation of hydroperoxides, resulting from biotic and abiotic degradation of palmitoleic acid, appeared to involve: (i) homolytic cleav-age of the peroxyl group affording the corresponding hydroxy-and oxoacids, (ii) reduction to the corresponding hydroxyacids by peroxygenases, (iii) heterolytic proton-catalysed cleavage and (iv) conversion to allylic 1,4-diols by diol synthases and hydroperoxide isomerases.

A critical question regarding the organic carbon cycle in the Arctic Ocean is whether the decline in ice extent and thickness and the associated increase in solar irradiance in the upper ocean will result in increased primary production and particulate organic carbon (POC) export. To assess spatial and temporal variability in POC export, under-ice export fluxes were measured with short-term sediment traps in the northern Laptev Sea in July-August-September 1995, north of the Fram Strait in July 1997, and in the Central Arctic in August–September 2012. Sediment traps were deployed at 2–5 m and 20–25 m under ice for periods ranging from 8.5 to 71 h. In addition to POC fluxes, total particulate matter, chlorophyll a, biogenic particulate silica, phytoplankton, and zooplankton fecal pellet fluxes were measured to evaluate the amount and composition of the material exported in the upper Arctic Ocean. Whereas elevated export fluxes observed on and near the Laptev Sea shelf were likely the combined result of high primary production, resuspension, and release of particulate matter from melting ice, low export fluxes above the central basins despite increased light availability during the record minimum ice extent of 2012 suggest that POC export was limited by nutrient supply during summer. These results suggest that the ongoing decline in ice cover affects export fluxes differently on Arctic shelves and over the deep Arctic Ocean and that POC export is likely to remain low above the central basins unless additional nutrients are supplied to surface waters.

A long-term sediment trap was deployed at 100 m (station AN03; 55°24′N; 77°55′W; water depth = 136 m) from October 2005 to August 2007 to monitor downward carbon export in southeastern Hudson Bay in the Canadian subarctic region. Elevated particulate organic carbon (POC) and total fluxes during fall 2005 and 2006 were the result of wind-induced resuspension of settled POC. The absence of a significant increase in POC fluxes in summer 2006 in contrast to summer 2007 suggests variation in the processes regulating carbon export in southeastern Hudson Bay. Large quantities of the holoplanktonic jellyfish Aglantha digitale were collected in the sediment trap during fall 2006 and summer 2007. The large collection of A. digitale during fall 2006 corresponds to the seasonal descent of the population, while the large abundance during summer 2007 remains unexplained. The increased POC fluxes in summer 2007 and the large occurrence of A. digitale in 2006 and 2007 may be early signs of environmental changes in southeastern Hudson Bay, however more sampling is needed to capture the variability of the ecosystem.

Calanoid copepods dominate mesozooplankton biomass in the Arctic Ocean. Variations in C content, C:N ratio and stable isotope composition (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) of Calanus hyperboreus, Calanus glacialis and Metridia longa collected from January to August 2008 in the southeast Beaufort Sea provided insights into their metabolism, feeding and reproduction. Seasonal differences in the C―prosome length relationships and C:N ratios were driven by distinct spawning strategies and changes in lipid content. Relatively high copepod biomass over the study period (2.6―9.7 g C m ―2 ) corresponded to favorable growth conditions in 2007―2008. The mean 15 N enrichment of copepods (+2.8―4.7‰) relative to particulate organic nitrogen values recorded at the ice bottom and at the chlorophyll maximum indicated a primarily herbivorous diet. In all species, δ 13 C and δ 15 N decreased markedly in April, reflecting the feeding onset on ice algae, but a rapid transition to feeding on phytoplankton occurred as a pelagic bloom was triggered by the early ice melt in May. A second decline in the δ 13 C and δ 15 N of copepods was recorded in June―July, coincident with a second increase in phytoplankton production. The two isotope depletion events in copepods were both followed by a return to high values and an increase in their C:N as a consequence of previous C fixation and nitrate limitation in phytoplankton and the likely formation of body reserves/tissue. Our results illustrate that Arctic calanoids respond quickly to any increase in primary production and can cope with changes in its nature and timing.

Surface concentrations and vertical fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) were assessed in the Amundsen Gulf (southeastern Beaufort Sea, Arctic Ocean) over the years 2004 to 2006 by using ocean color remote-sensing imagery and sequential sediment traps moored over the ca. 400 m isobath. Environmental conditions (sea ice, wind) and oceanographic variables (temperature, salinity, fluorescence and currents) were investigated to explain the variability of POC data. Annual downward POC fluxes in 2004, 2005 and 2006 cumulated, respectively, to 3.3, 4.2 and 6.0 g C m −2 yr −1 at ∼100 m depth, and to 1.3, 2.2 and 3.3 g C m −2 yr −1 at ∼210 m depth. The fraction of settling POC attributable to autochthonous processes occurring at or next to ice break-up was estimated to be 75–84% of the 100 m annual fluxes and to be 61–75% of the 210 m fluxes. Over the three ice-reduced seasons, distinct scenarios between ice conditions, surface POC pools and vertical POC export at 100 m were identified: (1) in 2004, despite a normal ice break-up, a weak primary production was measured and low vertical fluxes were collected as old ice moved across the region; (2) in 2005, a lengthened ice-free period allowed an extended season of surface POC production near-shore, while an intermediate increase of vertical fluxes was recorded offshore; and (3) in 2006, a late ice melt gave rise to a pulsed ice edge bloom and to large vertical fluxes also associated with extra ice-flushed material. Linear regressions of vertical POC fluxes against satellite-derived surface POC concentrations suggested that the pelagic POC retention in the upper 100 m of the Amundsen Gulf ranged from ca. 70% to 90% depending on the timing of ice cover melt. Regardless of the inter-annual variability, the estimated fraction of the surface POC reservoir reaching the 210 m water depth was reduced to ∼5%. Therefore, as the Arctic Ocean warms up, our results support the expectation that the increasing extent of the seasonal ice zone will promote the POC pathways that benefit pelagic webs rather than benthic communities.

The ongoing regression of sea ice cover is expected to significantly affect the fate of organic carbon over the Arctic continental shelves. Long-term moored sediment traps were deployed in 2005–2006 in the Beaufort Sea, Northern Baffin Bay and the Laptev Sea to compare the annual variability of POC fluxes and to evaluate the factors regulating the annual cycle of carbon export over these continental shelves. Annual POC fluxes at 200 m ranged from 1.6 to 5.9 g C m −2 yr −1 with the highest export in Northern Baffin Bay and the lowest export over the Mackenzie Shelf in the Beaufort Sea. Each annual cycle exhibited an increase in POC export a few weeks before, during, or immediately following sea ice melt, but showed different patterns over the remainder of the cycle. Enhanced primary production, discharge of the Lena River, and resuspension events contributed to periods of elevated POC export over the Laptev Sea slope. High POC fluxes in Northern Baffin Bay reflected periods of elevated primary production in the North Water polynya. In the Beaufort Sea sediment resuspension contributed to most of the large export events. Our results suggest that the outer shelf of the Laptev Sea will likely sustain the largest increase in POC export in the next few years due to the large reduction in ice cover and the possible increase in the Lena River discharge. The large differences in forcing among the regions investigated reinforce the importance of monitoring POC fluxes in the different oceanographic regimes that characterize the Arctic shelves to assess the response of the Arctic Ocean carbon cycle to interannual variability and climate change.

We present data on the quality and quantity of particulate organic material deposited to the benthos in the Chukchi Sea. This analysis is undertaken by using 7 Be, a short-lived radiotracer, which is associated with particle deposition, the stable carbon isotopic composition of organic material and its C/N ratio in the water column and within the sediments, and the inventories of chlorophyll a present in surface sediments. Using previously published data, we show that sedimentation processes in the regional Bering Strait ecosystem may have shifted in the past decade. Surface sediments collected in 2004 adjacent to the Russian coastline in the Chukchi Sea are less refractory in terms of carbon isotope ratios and C/N ratios than was observed for surface sediments at similar locations in 1995 and 1988. Based upon sediment 7 Be and chlorophyll a inventories, short-term sedimentation on the shelf occurs immediately north of Bering Strait, and within and downstream of Barrow and Herald Canyons. Seasonal differences (i.e., ice-covered versus open-water conditions) in the quality of particulate organic carbon reaching the benthos appear to be small in the most productive waters, such as Barrow Canyon. However, in less productive waters, C/N ratios and δ 13 C values show seasonal variations. Once on the bottom, δ 13 C values in the organic fractions of the sediments are less negative than observed in settling material in the water column, which is commonly thought to result from biological processing within the sediments.

Large-volume sampling of 234Th was conducted to estimate particulate organic carbon (POC) export in conjunction with drifting sediment trap deployments in the northern Barents Sea in July 2003 and May 2005. 234Th-derived POC fluxes averaged 42.3 ± 39.7 mmol C m− 2 d− 1 in 2003 and 47.1 ± 30.6 mmol C m− 2 d− 1 in 2005. Sediment trap POC fluxes averaged 13.1 ± 8.2 mmol C m− 2 d− 1 in 2003 and 17.3 ± 11.4 mmol C m− 2 d− 1 in 2005, but better reflected the transient bloom conditions that were observed at each station within a season. Although 234Th fluxes agreed within a factor 2 at most stations and depths sampled, sediment trap POC fluxes were lower than large-volume POC flux estimates at almost every station. This may represent an under-collection of POC by the drifting sediment traps or, conversely, an over-collection of POC by the large-volume sampling of 234Th. It is hypothesized that the offset between the two methods is partly due to the presence of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii, which potentially causes a large variation in > 53-μm POC/234Th ratios. Due to the large proportion of dissolved carbon or mucilage released by P. pouchetii, and because it is thought that P. pouchetii does not contribute significantly to the vertical export of biogenic matter in the Barents Sea, the application of large-volume sampling of 234Th may yield relatively high, and possibly inaccurate POC/234Th ratios. Hence, POC fluxes derived from 234Th sampling may be inappropriate and drifting sediment traps might be a more reliable method to measure the vertical export of biogenic matter in regions that have recurrent P. pouchetii blooms, such as the Barents Sea.

Time-series studies of arctic marine ecosystems are rare. This is not surprising since polar regions are largely only accessible by means of expensive modern infrastructure and instrumentation. In 1999, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) established the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN crossing the Fram Strait at about 79° N. Multidisciplinary investigations covering all parts of the open-ocean ecosystem are carried out at a total of 21 permanent sampling sites in water depths ranging between 250 and 5500 m. From the outset, repeated sampling in the water column and at the deep seafloor during regular expeditions in summer months was complemented by continuous year-round sampling and sensing using autonomous instruments in anchored devices (i.e., moorings and free-falling systems). The central HAUSGARTEN station at 2500 m water depth in the eastern Fram Strait serves as an experimental area for unique biological in situ experiments at the seafloor, simulating various scenarios in changing environmental settings. Long-term ecological research at the HAUSGARTEN observatory revealed a number of interesting temporal trends in numerous biological variables from the pelagic system to the deep seafloor. Contrary to common intuition, the entire ecosystem responded exceptionally fast to environmental changes in the upper water column. Major variations were associated with a Warm-Water-Anomaly evident in surface waters in eastern parts of the Fram Strait between 2005 and 2008. However, even after 15 years of intense time-series work at HAUSGARTEN, we cannot yet predict with complete certainty whether these trends indicate lasting alterations due to anthropologically-induced global environmental changes of the system, or whether they reflect natural variability on multiyear time-scales, for example, in relation to decadal oscillatory atmospheric processes.

Drifting sediment traps were deployed at 9 stations in May-June (ice-covered conditions) and July-August (ice-free conditions) 2004 in the Chukchi Sea to investigate the variability in export fluxes of biogenic matter in the presence and absence of sea ice cover. Measurements of chlorophyll- a (Chl- a ), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), phytoplankton, zooplankton fecal pellets, and the stable carbon isotope composition ( δ 13 C) of the sinking material were performed along Barrow Canyon (BC) and a parallel shelf-to-basin transect from East Hanna Shoal (EHS) to the Canada Basin. POC export fluxes were similarly high in the presence (378±106 mg C m −2 d −1 ) and in the absence of ice cover (442±203 mg C m −2 d −1 ) at the BC stations, while fluxes were significantly higher in the absence (129±98 mg C m −2 d −1 ) than in the presence of ice cover (44±29 mg C m −2 d −1 ) at the EHS stations. The C/N ratios and δ 13 C values of sinking organic particles indicated that POC export fluxes on the Chukchi continental shelf were mostly composed of freshly produced labile material, except at the EHS stations under ice cover where the exported matter was mostly composed of refractory material probably advected into the EHS region. Chl- a fluxes were higher under ice cover than in ice-free water, however, relatively low daily loss rates of Chl- a and similar phytoplankton carbon fluxes in ice-covered and ice-free water suggest the retention of phytoplankton in the upper water column. An increase in fecal pellet carbon fluxes in ice-free water reflected higher grazing pressure in the absence of ice cover. Elevated daily loss rates of POC at the BC stations confirmed other indications that Barrow Canyon is an important area of carbon export to the basin and/or benthos. These results support the conclusion that there are large spatial and temporal variations in export fluxes of biogenic matter on the Chukchi continental shelf, although export fluxes may be similar in the presence and in the absence of ice cover in highly productive regions.

Large-volume sampling of 234Th and drifting sediment trap deployments were conducted as part of the 2004 Western Arctic Shelf–Basin Interactions (SBI) spring (May 15–June 23) and summer (July 17–August 26) process cruises in the Chukchi Sea. Measurements of 234Th and particulate organic carbon (POC) export fluxes were obtained at five stations during the spring cruise and four stations during the summer cruise along Barrow Canyon (BC) and along a parallel shelf-to-basin transect from East Hanna Shoal (EHS) to the Canada Basin. 234Th and POC fluxes obtained with in situ pumps and drifting sediment traps agreed to within a factor of 2 for 70% of the measurements. POC export fluxes measured with in situ pumps at 50 m along BC were similar in spring and summer (average = 14.0 ± 8.0 mmol C m− 2 day− 1 and 16.5 ± 6.5 mmol C m− 2 day− 1, respectively), but increased from spring to summer at the EHS transect (average = 1.9 ± 1.1 mmol C m− 2 day− 1 and 19.5 ± 3.3 mmol C m− 2 day− 1, respectively). POC fluxes measured with sediment traps at 50 m along BC were also similar in both seasons (31.3 ± 9.3 mmol C m− 2 day− 1 and 29.1 ± 14.2 mmol C m− 2 day− 1, respectively), but were approximately twice as high as POC fluxes measured with in situ pumps. Sediment trap POC fluxes measured along the EHS transect also increased from spring to summer (3.0 ± 1.9 mmol C m− 2 day− 1 and 13.0 ± 6.4 mmol C m− 2 day− 1, respectively), and these fluxes were similar to the POC fluxes obtained with in situ pumps. Discrepancies in POC export fluxes measured using in situ pumps and sediment traps may be reasonably explained by differences in the estimated POC/234Th ratios that arise from differences between the techniques, such as time-scale of measurement and size and composition of the collected particles. Despite this variability, in situ pump and sediment trap-derived POC fluxes were only significantly different at a highly productive station in BC during the spring.

Between Greenland and Spitsbergen, Fram Strait is a region where cold ice-covered Polar Water exits the Arctic Ocean with the East Greenland Current (EGC) and warm Atlantic Water enters the Arctic Ocean with the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC). In this compilation, we present two different data sets from plankton ecological observations in Fram Strait: (1) long-term measurements of satellite-derived (1998–2012) and in situ chlorophyll a (chl a) measurements (mainly summer cruises, 1991–2012) plus protist compositions (a station in WSC, eight summer cruises, 1998–2011); and (2) short-term measurements of a multidisciplinary approach that includes traditional plankton investigations, remote sensing, zooplankton, microbiological and molecular studies, and biogeochemical analyses carried out during two expeditions in June/July in the years 2010 and 2011. Both summer satellite-derived and in situ chl a concentrations showed slight trends towards higher values in the WSC since 1998 and 1991, respectively. In contrast, no trends were visible in the EGC. The protist composition in the WSC showed differences for the summer months: a dominance of diatoms was replaced by a dominance of Phaeocystis pouchetii and other small pico- and nanoplankton species. The observed differences in eastern Fram Strait were partially due to a warm anomaly in the WSC. Although changes associated with warmer water temperatures were observed, further long-term investigations are needed to distinguish between natural variability and climate change in Fram Strait. In the Arctic, under-ice primary production is limited to summer months and is restricted not only by ice thickness and snow cover but also by the stratification of the water column, which constrains nutrient supply for algal growth. Research Vessel Polarstern visited the ice-covered eastern-central basins between 82° to 89°N and 30° to 130°E in summer 2012, when Arctic sea ice declined to a record minimum. During this cruise, we observed a widespread deposition of ice algal biomass of on average 9 grams of carbon per square meter to the deep-sea floor of the central Arctic basins. Data from this cruise will contribute to assessing the effect of current climate change on Arctic productivity, biodiversity, and ecological function.

As part of the HAUSGARTEN long-term observatory, sediment trap deployments were carried out before, during, and after the anomalously warm Atlantic Water inflow observed from 2005 to 2007 in the eastern Fram Strait. Downward export of particulate organic carbon (POC), zooplankton fecal pellet carbon (FPC), and biogenic particulate silica (bPSi) were measured from August 2002 to June 2003 and from July 2004 to July 2008 to indirectly assess the impact of the warm anomaly on phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in the region. Lower and less frequent bPSi fluxes were observed during most of the warm anomaly period, reflecting a shift in phytoplankton community composition towards dominance of small-sized phytoplankton under warmer conditions. Lower FPC fluxes observed concurrently with the lower bPSi fluxes may indicate a decrease in fecal pellet production due to changing feeding conditions. In addition, the export of smaller fecal pellets in fall 2005 and spring 2006 suggests a dominance of smaller zooplankton during the warm anomaly. Nonetheless, bPSi and FPC export always increased in the presence of ice cover in the area above the sediment trap, even during the warm anomaly period, suggesting that sea ice is a key factor influencing the frequency of export events in the eastern Fram Strait. The scarcity of ice over the sampling area in 2005 and 2006 may partly be due to the warm anomaly, although solar radiation and ice drift due to wind stress also govern ice cover extent in the region. Overall, the warm anomaly resulted in a shift in the composition of the export fluxes when associated with an absence of ice cover in the eastern Fram Strait.

[1] Long-term sediment traps were deployed from September 2005 to August 2007 in the northern Laptev Sea to assess the annual variability in vertical export of particulate organic carbon (POC). The second year of deployment coincided with the record low in Arctic summer ice extent reached in 2007 that resulted in an increase in marine primary production over the Siberian shelves. POC export fluxes increased during ice melt in 2007, leading to a ∼2-fold increase in annual POC export relative to 2005–2006 over the continental slope of the Laptev Sea. These results suggest that the continuous decrease of sea ice extent could sustain increased POC export in the northern Laptev Sea and adjacent seas, potentially altering marine ecosystem structure in the Siberian Arctic.

Through the analysis of observational mooring data collected at the northeastern Laptev Sea continental slope in 2004-2007, we document a hydrographic seasonal signal in the intermediate Atlantic Water (AW) layer, with generally higher temperature and salinity from December-January to May-July and lower values from May-July to December-January. At the mooring position, this seasonal signal dominates, contributing up to 75% of the total variance. Our data suggest that the entire AW layer down to at least 840 m is affected by seasonal cycling, although the strength of the seasonal signal in temperature and salinity reduces from 260 m (±0.25°C and ±0.025 psu) to 840 m (±0.05°C and ±0.005 psu). The seasonal velocity signal is substantially weaker, strongly masked by high-frequency variability, and lags the thermohaline cycle by 45-75 days. We hypothesize that our mooring record shows a time history of the along-margin propagation of the AW seasonal signal carried downstream by the AW boundary current. Our analysis suggests that the seasonal signal in the Fram Strait Branch of AW (FSBW) at 260 m is predominantly translated from Fram Strait, while the seasonality in the Barents Sea branch of AW (BSBW) domain (at 840 m) is attributed instead to the seasonal signal input from the Barents Sea. However, the characteristic signature of the BSBW seasonal dynamics observed through the entire AW layer leads us to speculate that BSBW also plays a role in seasonally modifying the properties of the FSBW. [1] Particulate organic carbon (POC) export fluxes were estimated in the shelf-slope region of the Chukchi Sea using measurements of 234Th−238U disequilibria and the POC/234Th ratio in large (>53-μm) particles. These export fluxes were used in conjunction with rates of primary productivity and benthic carbon respiration to construct a POC budget for this shelf-slope region. Samples were collected along a series of shelf-basin transects in the spring (May–June) and summer (July–August) of 2004. These stations were previously occupied during the ice covered (spring) and open water (summer) seasons of 2002, allowing for an interannual comparison of export flux. In contrast to 2002, when open water POC fluxes were significantly higher than in the ice-covered period, POC export fluxes in 2004 were similar during the spring (average = 19.7 ± 24.8 mmol C m−2 d−1) and summer (average = 20.0 ± 14.5 mmol C m−2 d−1). The high POC fluxes measured during the spring are attributed to a plankton bloom, as evidenced by exceptionally high rates of primary productivity (average = 124.4 ± 88.1 mmol C m−2 d−1). The shelf-slope budget of particulate organic carbon indicates that 10–20% of primary productivity was exported below 50 m but was not consumed during benthic carbon respiration or burial and oxidation in underlying sediments. Furthermore, a water column−sediment budget of 234Th indicates that particulate material is retained in shelf sediments on a seasonal basis.
