Abstract

Antler is one of the primary animal raw materials exploited for technical purposes by the hunter-gatherer groups of the Eurasian Upper Palaeolithic (UP) all over the ecological range of deers, and beyond. It was exhaustively employed to produce one of the most critical tools for the survival of the UP societies: hunting weapons. However, antler implements can be made from diverse deer taxa, with different ecological requirements and ethological behaviours. Identifying the antler's origin at a taxonomic level is thus essential in improving our knowledge of humans' functional, practical and symbolic choices, as well as the human-animal interface during Prehistoric times. Nevertheless, palaeogenetics analyses have focused mainly on bone and teeth, with genetic studies of antler generally focused on modern deer conservation. Here we present the results of the first whole mitochondrial genome ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis by means of in-solution hybridisation capture of antlers from pre-Holocene archaeological contexts. We analysed a set of 50 Palaeolithic and Neolithic (c. 34-8ka) antler and osseous objects from South-Western Europe, Central Europe, South-Western Asia and the Caucasus. We successfully obtained aDNA, allowing us to identify the exploited taxa and demonstrate the archaeological relevance of those finds. Moreover, as most of the antlers were sampled using a minimally-invasive method, further analyses (morphometric, technical, genetic, radiometric and more) remain possible on these objects.

Abstract

Abstract The origin of funerary practices has important implications for the emergence of so-called modern cognitive capacities and behaviour. We provide new multidisciplinary information on the archaeological context of the La Ferrassie 8 Neandertal skeleton (grand abri of La Ferrassie, Dordogne, France), including geochronological data -14C and OSL-, ZooMS and ancient DNA data, geological and stratigraphic information from the surrounding context, complete taphonomic study of the skeleton and associated remains, spatial information from the 1968–1973 excavations, and new (2014) fieldwork data. Our results show that a pit was dug in a sterile sediment layer and the corpse of a two-year-old child was laid there. A hominin bone from this context, identified through Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) and associated with Neandertal based on its mitochondrial DNA, yielded a direct 14C age of 41.7–40.8 ka cal BP (95%), younger than the 14C dates of the overlying archaeopaleontological layers and the OSL age of the surrounding sediment. This age makes the bone one of the most recent directly dated Neandertals. It is consistent with the age range for the Châtelperronian in the site and in this region and represents the third association of Neandertal taxa to Initial Upper Palaeolithic lithic technocomplex in Western Europe. A detailed multidisciplinary approach, as presented here, is essential to advance understanding of Neandertal behavior, including funerary practices.

Abstract

Internal and external bony tissues from diverse mammalian taxa are one of the primary animal raw materials exploited for technical and symbolic purposes by Eurasian Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers. Identifying the source species used for osseous raw material is critical to gain insights into these populations’ behaviour, technology, and subsistence. The study of osseous tools has advanced in the last few years by combining archaeological and biomolecular methods. Ancient genomics opens many new analytical opportunities. Ancient DNA (aDNA) can provide a wealth of information about the animal sources of these objects. Unfortunately, aDNA analyses often involve destructive sampling. Here, we develop and apply a minimally-invasive aDNA sampling method for an assemblage of 42 prehistoric hunting weapons and tools from various Eurasian archaeological sites. We evaluated the impact of our approach on the specimens visually, microscopically and through Micro-CT scans. The surface impacts are marginal, ranging from 0.3-0.4 mm. Using a custom-made DNA capture kit for 54 mammalian species, we obtained sufficient aDNA to identify the taxa of 33% of the objects. For one of the tools, we recovered enough endogenous aDNA to infer the genetic affinities of the individual. Our results also demonstrate that ancient antler, one of the primary raw materials used during a large part of prehistory, is a reliable source of aDNA. Our minimally-invasive aDNA sampling method is therefore effective while preserving osseous objects for potential further analyses: morphometric, technical, genetic, radiometric and more.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES We provide the description and comparative analysis of six new teeth from the site of La Ferrassie. Our goal is to discuss their taxonomic attribution, and to provide an updated inventory of Neandertal and modern human remains from La Ferrassie in their associated archeological context. MATERIALS AND METHODS We use external and internal anatomy, classic morphometrics, and geometric morphometrics. The teeth from La Ferrassie are compared to several samples of contemporary Neandertals and upper Paleolithic modern humans and to recent modern humans. RESULTS Three specimens are classified as Neandertals, two as modern humans, and one remains unclassified. DISCUSSION Based on the previously known fossil samples and the new teeth reported here, there are currently a minimum of four adult and five immature Neandertal individuals coming from the "Grand Abri" and a minimum of two modern human adult individuals: one from "Grand Abri" and one from "Grotte." It is noteworthy that the spatial distribution of the recovered Neandertal remains is not restricted to the area where the LF1-LF 8 were found but now covers the full extension of the excavated area. Moreover, while both Neandertal and modern human occupations have yielded isolated human remains, the partial-to-complete skeletons only belong to Neandertals. These considerations open new perspectives for the understanding of the occupation and use of the La Ferrassie site.

Abstract

International audience; This article proposes a historiographical overview of research carried out on the fracturing of hard animal materials (bone, antler). It covers the observations of fracturing on skeletal remains as early as the 19th century and the identification of its anthropic or taphonomic origins at the beginning of the 20th century. It also looks at the latest research focusing on specific technical and/or alimentary objectives at the beginning of the 21st century. From 2010-2011 the research team 'Ethnologie préhistorique' (UMR 7041, ArScAn) developed a new dynamic relating to the fracturing of hard animal materials within the general programme 'Ressources ani-males: acquisition, transformation et utilisation'. This research benefited from previous studies, with a specific attention to the technical perspective. This article thus focuses on the technical exploitation of bone and antler and the production of potential blanks used for the manufacturing of 'expedient' tools. But inevitably it is necessary to consider the use of bone fracturing for alimentary purposes since it is often thought that bones were primarily fractured to extract the marrow. The different issues regarding the fracturing sensu lato of bone and antler are discussed here (other materials such as shell, wood and ivory are discussed elsewhere in this volume). We do not intend to be exhaustive because the abundance of publications, from the 19th century to the present, is so great that a single book would not be enough.; Le présent article propose un bilan historiographique des recherches sur la fracturation de deux matières dures d'origine animale depuis les premières interrogations concernant sa reconnaissance à partir des restes osseux au xix e siècle, l'identification de son origine anthropique ou taphonomique au début du XXe siècle, jusqu'aux recherches ciblées sur ses objectifs, technique et/ou alimentaire, au début du xxi e siècle. Dans ce but, l'axe de recherche « Ressources animales : acquisition, transformation et utilisation » de l'équipe Ethnologie préhistorique (UMR 7041, ArScAn) a développé, à partir des années 2010-2011, une nouvelle dynamique de recherche sur la fracturation. Les travaux menés ont bénéficié des recherches antérieures, mais en s'inscrivant plus spécifiquement dans une optique très technique. Cet article est ainsi orienté vers l'exploitation technique de l'os et du bois de cervidé et la production de supports potentiels pour des outils dits « peu élaborés ». Mais s'intéresser à cet objectif amène nécessairement à poser la question de la fracturation d'origine alimentaire des os puisqu'on considère souvent qu'ils étaient avant tout cassés dans le but de récupérer la moelle contenue dans les diaphyses. Ce sont les différentes facettes de la fracturation sensu lato de l'os et du bois animal qui sont traitées ici (la coquille, le bois végétal et l'ivoire sont présentés plus loin dans ce volume). Ce bilan ne prétend pas à l'exhaustivité car la profusion des documents est telle, depuis le XIXe siècle jusqu'à nos jours, qu'un seul ouvrage n'y aurait pas suffi.

Abstract

International audience; The Isturitz cave is a famous reference prehistoric site. It offers one of the most important stratigraphic sequences of Western Europe, from Middle Paleolithic to the end of Upper Paleolithic. Gravettian holds a central place, both by its central stratigraphic position in the middle of UpperPaleolithic and by the unequalled density of the archaeological remains which have already been studied (Passemard, 1924, 1944 ; Saint-Périer, 1952 ; Bouchud, 1951 ; de Beaufort and Julien, 1973 ; Clottes, 1976 ; Esparza San-Juan, 1990 ; Gambier, 1990-91 ; Mujika Alustiza, 1991 ; Esparza San-Juan and Mujika Alustiza, 1996a and b ; Buisson, 1990 ; Schwab, 2003…). Relying on these researches, and using others approaches of materials (technological, economical, archaeozoological), our aim is to renew datas about Isturitz Gravettian whose old excavations and dense levels contribute to give yet a monolithic picture. Productions (lithic and osseous) as well as fauna remains will therefore be tackled together. For the first time, the new archaeozoological studies give data on seasonality and subsistence strategy. From now on, the determination of lithic raw materials opens the field of an estimate of the supply area and suggests some changes compared with Aurignacian. By taking account distortions due to the excavation methods and to the particular cave sedimentation process, we will attempt to enlight the gravettian occupations from this major site. This will lead us to discuss the structuration of the Isturitz Gravettian and the activities which have taken place there (domestic, hunting, symbolic), in order to suggest several tracks of thought on the site function and its place within “aquitano-pyreneo-cantabrique” area.; La grotte d'Isturitz est un gisement préhistorique de référence. Elle a livré une des séquences stratigraphiques les plus importantes d'Europe occidentale, allant du Paléolithique moyen à la fin du Paléolithique supérieur. Le Gravettien y tient une place centrale, à la fois par sa position stratigraphique au cœur du Paléolithique supérieur et par la densité inégalée de son mobilier archéologique qui a déjà bénéficié de nombreuses études (Passemard, 1924, 1944 ; Bouchud, 1951 ; Saint-Périer, 1952 ; de Beaufort et Julien, 1973 ; Clottes, 1976 ; Buisson, 1990 ; Esparza San-Juan, 1990 ; Gambier, 1990-1991 ; Mujika Alustiza, 1991 ; Esparza San-Juan et Mujika Alustiza, 1996a et b ; Schwab, 2003 ; Foucher, 2004). En nous appuyant sur ces recherches préexistantes et en mettant à profit des approches (technologique, économique, archéozoologique) plus récentes, l'objectif de notre étude est de renouveler notre connaissance du Gravettien d'Isturitz, l'ancienneté des fouilles et la densité des niveaux concourant à en donner une image monolithique. Les productions matérielles (industries lithique et osseuse) ainsi que les restes fauniques sont abordés selon une approche complémentaire. Pour la première fois, de nouvelles études archéozoologiques offrent des indices sur la saisonnalité d'occupation ainsi que sur les stratégies de subsistance. La détermination des matières premières lithiques ouvre désormais le champ à une évaluation du territoire d'approvisionnement et suggère quelques changements par rapport à l'Aurignacien. En tenant compte des distorsions inhérentes aux méthodes de fouille et aux conditions particulières de sédimentation en grotte, nous tenterons, avec ces nouvelles données, d'apporter un autre éclairage sur les occupations gravettiennes de ce site majeur. Cela nous conduira à discuter de la structuration du Gravettien d'Isturitz et des activités (domestiques, cynégétiques, symboliques) qui s'y sont déroulées afin de proposer des pistes de réflexion sur la fonction de ce site et sa place au sein de l'aire « aquitano-pyrénéo-cantabrique ».

Abstract

Isturitz Cave is located in the western Pyrenees in the heart of the zone of passage and contact between the Aquitaine region and the Vasco-Cantabrian ledge. Excavations during the first half of the 20th century yielded a remarkable archaeological sequence covering the Middle Palaeolithic and the entire Upper Palaeolithic. New research conducted in the Saint-Martin chamber has revealed intensive Aurignacian occupations attributed to the archaic and early phases of this techno-complex. In this paper, we present a synthesis of the principal data that make Isturitz a key site in the study of this period.; Située dans les Pyrénées occidentales, au coeur de la zone de passage et de contact entre l'Aquitaine et la corniche vasco-cantabrique, la grotte d'Isturitz a fait l'objet, dans la première moitié du XXe siècle, de fouilles qui ont livré un remarquable ensemble archéologique couvrant le Paléolithique moyen et la quasi-totalité du Paléolithique supérieur. De nouvelles recherches menées dans la salle de Saint-Martin ont mis en évidence d'importantes occupations aurignaciennes attribuées aux phases archaïques et anciennes de ce technocomplexe. Nous ferons dans cet article une synthèse des principales données qui font de la grotte d'Isturitz un site clef pour l'étude de celles-ci.
